Season Preview E
ntering her fourth season with the Knights, Stephanie Nickitas is looking forward to another great year. The team finished with a respectable 13-7 record for the 2009-10 season.
Nickitas helps preview the upcoming season with the following in-depth Q&A session. There are a lot of talented teams on the spring schedule, a majority you have had a chance to play in the fall. How will this play in the team’s favor? We have a very well-balanced schedule. We compete against some of the top teams in the country and have been able to see a few of them in the five tournaments that we have already played. I think the fall has helped us grow and mature a lot. We are going to be a lot more ready for them when the spring match rolls around. The team has been pu ng in a lot of hard work and you can really see the improvements from when we started in September in Miami. You and your strength coach, Ben Fleming, have been known for your strength and condi oning program. What did you add this year to help improve your players? We have one of the best all-around programs that combines the right amount of tennisspecific training, strength work and metabolic condi oning. One of the keys to our success
is adaptability. We have made changes each semester that con nue to make the programs ever be er. This spring we are doing shorter and intense interval type workouts in the gym. We have also added a few tes ng assessments to see where they are individually, as far as quickness, agility, power and strength. Jenny Frisell being the lone senior on the team has been with you since you started here at UCF. How has she grown over the years to become the player she is today? Jenny has improved tremendously over the years. One of the biggest things has been her fitness level. She is able to stay out there and ba le through and en re match, unlike her freshman year when she was really only able to play one tough set. Jenny is at her best when she is being vocal and energized on the court. The other players look to her for that energy especially when she is out there in singles figh ng tough opponents.
Now upperclassmen, how have Taylor Dubins, Alexis Rodriguez and Andrea Yacaman help become leaders on the team? Has Yacaman’s off-season surgery affected her playing game? Each year they have grown in their experience level and they are really star ng to see that hard work pays off. They are really forming the culture of this team with the others looking to them for guidance, help and leadership.
It is never easy coming back from knee surgery, but Andrea has been working diligently on her rehab and doing everything she can to get ready to go. She might have to play through some discomfort but she will definitely have an impact on our lineup this season. Both Jenna Doerfler and Allison Hodges had solid freshmen seasons. What are your expecta ons for them in their second year with the Knights? Jenna and Allison had a steep learning curve. They had a lot to learn last year and they really handled it well. You can see the difference in their maturity levels already. We as coaches feel like we can put a li le more on their shoulders and expect a li le more from them. They are handling that posi on really well and coming into leaders of their own already. The two newcomers this season, Courtney Griffith, Josephine Haraldson along with the redshirted Genevieve Lorbergs have transioned well in the fall. How do you see them helping the team this spring? All three of them will make a huge contribu on to the lineup and to our team’s success each in their own way. You have to take some hits before you can grow and I think they realized this in the fall. They are on the right path and they know where they are going. You can already see their improvement from last weekend’s results in Tallahassee.

Stephanie Nickitas Head Coach - Fourth Season with the Knights hts Se ng off on her fourth season with the Knights in 2010-11, Stephanie Nickitas con nues to build a program through recrui ng, and challenging her team by compe ng against quality opponents. Coaching the Knights In 2008-09, the Knights faced seven ranked foes and welcomed three top-15 teams to the UCF Tennis Complex. The following year in 2009-10, the Black and Gold ba led highlyranked programs such as Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Florida State and SMU in the fall and the spring. It also faced several other schools from across the country like New Mexico, Michigan State and Harvard. During that 2009-10 campaign, UCF finished with an impressive 13-7 record. At the end of the regular season, it earned a No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. That was the Knights’ highest seed since joining Conference USA in 200506, proving that the program maintains an upward path through the college tennis ranks. Highlighted by victories over Michigan State, Memphis and New Mexico, the Knights shot off to a 9-2 start, which was their best opening to a season since 1998-99. Junior Jenny Frisell was consistently ranked among the top singles players in the country, including a No. 83 ranking by the ITA. Sophomore Taylor Dubins won a singles tournament in the fall at UNF, while freshman Allison Hodges claimed the doubles tle at the Southern Adult Indoor Tennis Open in December, which gave her a wild card spot into the qualifying round of the WTA professional tournament in Memphis. Coaching in her second year at UCF, Nickitas led the Knights to a 12-10 mark facing a difficult schedule in 2008-09. The doubles pair of Frisell and Elvira Serrot was slo ed together by Nickitas on Feb. 13 against Georgia Southern and quickly rose in the na onal ranks all the way to No. 27 a er defeating the No. 11 and No. 33 ranked teams from Duke and NC State, respec vely. Under the guidance of Nickitas, Ka e Orletsky, a transfer from Arizona, anchored the No. 6 slot for the Knights pos ng a 12-5 record and capturing the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year award. The honor was the first specialty award handed to a UCF women’s tennis player since joining C-USA in 2005. In her first year at the helm of the Knights, Nickitas guided the squad to a 12-9 record and a 57.8 singles winning percentage in 2007-08. But more impressively, UCF dominated on the doubles courts by going 60-30 for a 66.7 clip.
ing.net. That was the highest of any C-USA program. A year earlier, her first UCF class climbed all the way to sixth in the rankings. And for 2010-11, Courtney Griffith started her UCF career a er being ranked a five-star recruit. Playing Days Nickitas was a standout player at Florida from 1996-99, earning All-America recogni on six mes for the Gators. She went on to be selected for The 1999 NCAA Top VIII Award, which honors the most-deserving eight student-athletes from across the country in all sports for their athle c, academic and leadership achievements. She won four collegiate Grand Slam tles as well, while that 1996 squad was ranked seventh of the Top 25 Gator Teams released in 2009. Nickitas also was the 1996 and 1997 NCAA Doubles champion with Dawn Buth, becoming the first duo in Division I history to claim back-to-back tles. She currently ranks first in single-season doubles winning percentage (41-1, 97.6 percent), and second all- me at UF with a career mark of 89.5 percent (128-15). Assistant Coaching Career Prior coming to Orlando, Nickitas spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Duke University and three at Harvard University. With Nickitas on the staff, Duke advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships in 2007. The Blue Devils finished the season ranked ninth na onally and went 20-8 overall and 9-1 against Atlan c Coast Conference opponents. Before working at Duke, Nickitas spent three years as an assistant at Harvard. In her three campaigns with the Crimson, Nickitas helped the Crimson claim three Ivy League championships. Harvard made two appearances in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and went undefeated in Ivy League play during Nickitas’ tenure. Following the 2005 season, Nickitas was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa on East Region Assistant Coach of the Year. The Personal File Nickitas is a na ve of Tampa and received her bachelor’s degree in business administra on from Florida in 1999. Nickitas picked up GTE Academic All-America honors in 1998 and was awarded with the NCAA Postgraduatee Scholarship following her senior campaign.
Focusing on the classroom, a whopping seven studentathletes on the 2009-10 roster were selected to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. That included Dubins earning the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal for having a GPA of at least 3.75. Four Knights in 2008-09 received spots on the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll as well. Among those Knights were Frisell and Serrot, who were voted onto the AllC-USA Second Team as a doubles tandem.
