FANTASTIC FALL SHOWS THAT KNIGHTS ARE ON THE RISE Things are really starting to come together for the Knights. Not only did UCF have two top three team finishes at events, including Kentucky’s Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational (pictured above) but the Knights golfers excelled as individuals. All three of the team’s returnees significantly improved their 2008-09 stroke averages during the fall. It all added up to great showings as four different UCF golfers accounted for a total of six Top 10 finishes this fall. With balance like that, things are looking good on the Knights’ quest for a third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and possibly beyond.
GETTING BETTER Senior Victoria Tomko (below left) entered the fall with a 79.63 career stroke average. She averaged 76.89 this past fall, including her first career evenpar round. Junior Katie Detlefsen (below right) averaged 79.17 last year but dropped that by 2.5 strokes this fall to a 76.67 on the strength of her first two career even-par rounds. Elisa Aoki saw similar results. She averaged 79.13 last spring as a mid-year enrolled freshman. Aoki improved to 76.56 in the fall, including two Top 10 finishes and three Top 20 placements.
VALENTINA’S VALUE Freshman Valentina Fontaine immediately showed her ability at the collegiate level this fall, posting a 74.56 stroke average with four of her nine rounds being at par or better. She placed second at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational (above). The 74.56 average is on pace to break the UCF seasonal record.

HOME COURSE ADVANTAGES Orlando is perhaps America’s golf capital, home to most PGA and LPGA Tour stars during the winter. The city has some of the country’s finest courses and the Knights enjoy playing time on many of them. This variety allows the Knights to prepare for different types of courses during the season.
REDTAIL GOLF CLUB
WHERE THE KNIGHTS PLAY The UCF women’s golf team utilizes several of the impressive courses in the Orlando area for practice and playing. Head coach Courtney Trimble’s Knights have access to some of the top country clubs in the golf-crazy region. The North Shore Golf Club (top right) is one of the upscale, semi-private courses that UCF has unlimited access to for practicing and playing. The front nine is a modern layout and the back nine features more of a classic style. Located just minutes away from campus, the Twin Rivers Golf Club is the home of the UCF Practice Facility, which was completed in 2009. The Knights have ample opportunity to play on the picturesque course. Not far south of campus is Stoneybrook East, a course which will test golfers with an abundance of water hazards.
PREMIERE COURSES The Knights and many of the nation’s premier women’s golf teams love playing in the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club. In addition to the UCF Challenge, the Sorrento course has also served as home to the 2009 and 2010 men’s Conference USA Championship and also hosted men’s NCAA Regional play in 2009. The Rio Pinar Country Club (left) is another course for the Knights. The course previously served as the host site for the PGA TOUR’s Citrus Open. The country club is the home of the Rio Pinar Invitational.
NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB
PREMIERE COURSES One of the biggest advantages of playing for UCF is the access to many of the country’s top golf courses located right here in Orlando. That includes the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club (left) and the Isleworth Golf Club (above). Minutes from UCF’s brand new medical school, the Lake Nona community is home to Ernie Els, Annika Sorenstam, Ben Curtis, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen and many other prominent players. Lake Nona’s annual cross-town challenge for the Tavistock Cup against Isleworth is broadcast nationally. Isleworth residents include Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, Stuart Appleby and Paula Creamer.
UCF PRACTICE FACILITY Members of the UCF men’s and women’s golf teams have the opportunity to enhance their games close to campus at the UCF Practice Facility. Located at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in nearby Oviedo, the facility was completed in 2009. Construction on the 2,880-square foot teaching building at the location concluded in 2009. The building features hitting bays and a state-of-the-art video system to analyze each player’s swing. Also, the structure houses a player’s lounge, locker room and offices for the UCF coaching staff. The facility is used exclusively by the UCF men’s and women’s golf programs. The practice facility includes a six-acre short-game area, in addition to a driving range. The short-game area has a pair of putting greens and target greens. The area was designed and constructed by McCumber Golf, which was founded by former PGA TOUR player Mark McCumber. Construction began in March 2007. Twin Rivers is managed by The Golf Group, an Orlando-based company that operates six courses in the area.
HITTING BAYS The practice facility includes two state-of-the-art hitting bays. Each hitting bay features digital video analysis that provides evaluation of ball speed, club speed, launch angle, ball spin, club face impact and swing path measurements.
LOUNGE AREA The lounge area features comfortable couches and chairs as well as a flat screen TV.
MORE THAN JUST GOLF College golf is about competition and academics but camaraderie with your teammates is also a big part of the experience. The memories made at UCF last a lifetime and they don’t all come on the golf course. Whether it is a team Halloween costume contest or a funny episode at a team dinner while on the road for a tournament, playing for the Knights is memorable.
ENJOYING THE RIDE TOWARDS THE TOP The Knights also had a good time on the links in the team’s first fall season under new head coach Courtney Trimble. UCF finished in the top three in two events. Individually, the Knights had six top-10 finishes with four different Knights placing in the top-10 of at least one event. UCF also competed in the prestigious Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships in Daytona Beach where the Knights were part of a 16-team field that included 15 teams that were either ranked or received votes in the preseason top-25 poll.
FALL SUCCESS UCF was second as a team at Kentucky’s Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational (left). Freshman Valentina Fontaine carded a 69-71-71=211 (-5) to place second at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational in Fort Myers (below).
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE In addition to excelling on the course, women’s golfers at UCF are also succeeding in the classroom where the team’s combined cumulative GPA is well over a 3.0. UCF’s lone senior, Victoria Tomko, is on schedule to graduate this spring while junior Katie Detlefsen, remarkably, had all ready earned her bachelor’s degree. UCF student-athletes are supported by a nine-person professional staff of advisors and program coordinators from the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA). The ASSA mission is to support student-athletes’ academic development while exceeding satisfactory progress toward their degrees. ASSA advisors coordinate tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, and priority class registration for all current student-athletes and assist new Knights through the recruitment process. UCF student-athletes receive specific academic and athletic information at orientation as well as study skills and time management instruction through out the year. More than 50 computers are available for student-athlete’s use anytime during the academic year. During the 2008-09 academic year, UCF placed a league-record 224 student-athletes on the conference academic honor roll.
HITTING THE BOOKS
Graduating in two years with a 4.0 GPA, Katie Detlefsen was an obvious choice for the Conference USA All-Academic Team and also a member of the NGCA All-American Scholar Team.
MAKING THE LIST The UCF women’s golf team takes full advantage of ASSA’s expert academic support. Four out of six members of the team were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, just a part of UCF’s league-record 224 student-athletes on that list.

KEITH R. TRIBBLE • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
T
he thread that has bridged together nearly three decades working in and around the collegiate community has been Keith Tribble’s history of building programs with strong foundations and dynamic structure. Since his start as Director of Athletics and Executive Vice President for the University of Central Florida Athletics Association on June 6, 2006, Tribble has quickly taken hold of the program’s blueprints and promised to lead with a principle that everyone associated with the program will also share - to “finish.”
Keith Tribble is committed to the concept of the well-rounded studentathlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess off the field as well as championship results on.
COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
In addition, the other focal point of his concentration is the oversight of the construction, expansion and completion of the noted UCF Athletics Facilities Master Plan. When finished, the plan will touch all areas of the student-athletes’ wellbeing, including residential housing, academic and mentoring support facilities and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new construction and improvements to UCF athletic facilities since his arrival. Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of the UCF student-athletes during his first two years in Orlando. The Knights, for the third straight year in 2008-09, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 224 representatives maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better. Much of UCF Athletics went from transitioning into Conference USA to competing for its titles in just a few short years. The football program has played for two C-USA titles since 2005, winning the championship and coveted AutoZone Liberty Bowl berth in 2007. In 2007-08, other programs such as women’s soccer and softball, and members of women’s track and field, claimed C-USA titles. In 2008-09, men’s golf reigned over the league, in addition to a big Conference USA Tournament championship from women’s basketball. Over half of the programs have competed in NCAA postseason tournaments the past three years.
David Chambers
David Hansen

Among Tribble’s transactions so far has been the renewal of several successful veteran coaches, including Amanda Cromwell (women’s soccer), Renee Luers-Gillispie (softball), George O’Leary (football) and Kirk Speraw (men’s basketball). Additionally, Tribble was instrumental in the hiring of several new head coaches, including Becky Cramer (women’s rowing) Bryan Cunningham (men’s soccer), Todd Dagenais (women’s volleyball), Stephanie Nickitas (women’s tennis), Terry Rooney (baseball), Caryl Smith-Gilbert (women’s track and field/cross country), Courtney Trimble (women’s golf), Bryce Wallor (men’s golf) and Joi Williams (women’s basketball).
Jeff Ulmer
Tribble attended the University of Florida where he played offensive guard for three bowl teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relations and marketing). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

The stadium has also been the site of World Cup and Olympic soccer contests. In 2006, the World Baseball Classic held part of its inaugural event in Orlando.
HOMETOWN PRIDE In addition to UCF athletics events, the region also features the most prominent NASCAR race, the Daytona 500. Several other NASCAR races, PGA Tour golf tournaments and numerous action sports championships are also held in Central Florida.
UCF KNIGHTS
2010 OUTLOOK The UCF women’s golf team has made twoconsecutive NCAA Regional appearances and, after a strong fall where the Knights had a pair of top-three finishes, a return trip is not out of the question as UCF heads into its first spring under new head coach Courtney Trimble. Trimble, who came to UCF over the summer after a successful career at Auburn, brought in a seasoned assistant in Mary Bryan, the program’s first director of operations in Charlotte Campbell, and immediately set to work on improving the Knights. Helping the Knights along is their brand new practice facility, just minutes from campus at the Twin Rivers Golf Course in Oviedo. The team’s home gives the Knights access to a private driving range, putting greens and short game area in addition to a pair of video swing analyzers for the UCF men’s and women’s teams. “It’s a really exciting time to be here,” Trimble said. “The new facility is awesome. You can get better there, and that’s what I’m so excited about. It’s three miles from campus. You can go there anytime and it’s just for the team. It’s a perfect practice facility for college golf as far as the building itself and the practice areas, the chipping and putting greens, are excellent. You can get your short game incredibly good. We’ve seen the benefits already.” UCF brings back three players from the 200809 season, led by senior Victoria Tomko. The native Belgian had by far a career-best 76.89 stroke average this fall, down from 80.38 last year. Her fall was highlighted by a third-place finish at Kentucky’s Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational, the first top-five placement of her career. One of the top student-athletes that UCF has ever had, Katie Detlefsen is back for her junior year. Already into her second semester of master’s degree work with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, her stroke average was just as impressive this past fall where her 76.67 was exactly two and a half strokes better than her 79.17 clip from 2008-09. Detlefsen fired the first two even par rounds of her career during the fall and her 218 (+2) showing at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational is tied for

the fifth-best 54-hole performance in school history, matching LPGA professional Liz Earley’s career-best mark while at UCF. Elisa Aoki joined the Knights in time for the spring semester last year and an up-and-down freshman campaign. She finished her first fall strong though, ranking amongst UCF’s top-three finishers in each of the final three events, topped by her fifth-place effort at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational. Aoki led the Knights with three top-20 finishes in the fall, including a pair of top10 placements, and hopes to carry that momentum into the spring. UCF has four freshmen from four different countries rounding out the lineup who could ultimately decide the postseason hopes of the team. Chilean National Team member Valentina Fontaine came to Orlando and made an instant impact. Her 211 (-5) at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational established a school record for a 54-hole

event on a par-72 course. Her 69-71-71 string also earned her Conference USA’s Women’s Golfer of the Week award. Fontaine’s 74.56 stroke average from the fall was two full strokes better than her closest teammate and she led the Knights with four par-or-better rounds. German freshman Carolin Pinegger also played in all four fall events and recorded a solid 78.11 average in her first collegiate semester of action. Pinegger proved to be tough at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, recording a 1-1-1 record. Sammy Vass, a native of Scotland, played in three fall events as an individual to gain experience and showed improvement with her best event being the team’s season finale at the FIU/ Pat Bradley Invitational in Fort Myers. Pensacola’s Sunny Harris rounds out the freshman, joining the Knights as a walk-on but not competing during the fall season. The spring schedule will offer UCF both a glimpse at some of America’s top teams and also some events where the Knights will be amongst the favorites. UCF will head to LSU, Georgia and Florida for events while also playing host to the annual UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento. The C-USA Championship will be hosted by Southern Miss this year. Last spring UCF placed second in the event behind only Tulane, its best finish since joining the league in 2005-06. With a good mix of veterans and freshmen and a new and energetic coaching staff, the Knights have ample cause for optimism heading into the spring with dreams of a third-straight NCAA Regional appearance in their collective heads. A good February, March and April can put the Knights just where they’d like to be come May.

COURTNEY TRIMBLE HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON AUBURN A proven winner who has experienced success at the collegiate level as both a coach and player, Courtney Trimble enters her first season as UCF’s women’s golf coach. It didn’t take long for UCF to see some of the improvements that Trimble hopes to continue to bring. UCF finished in the top three in two out of its four tournaments during her first fall in Orlando. Prior to this fall, UCF had just two topthree team finishes in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons combined. This fall, four different Knights (Elisa Aoki, Katie Detlefsen, Valentina Fontaine and Victoria Tomko) finished in the top 10 of at least one of the team’s final three events with three of those placings being top-five finishes. It is exactly how Trimble hoped things would happen - for a UCF team which has made NCAA Regionals each of the past two years to get even better. “We are excited to name Courtney Trimble as UCF’s next women’s golf coach,” UCF Director of Athletics Keith Tribble said of her hiring. “Courtney has seen the top of the collegiate golf world at Auburn and will be able to utilize our new golf facility, the tremendous Orlando golf community and this great University to get us to the top. We look forward to building on our NCAA Regional appearances the past two seasons and become a consistent nationally-recognized program.” “I am very excited to have this opportunity to be the head coach at UCF,” Trimble said. “UCF has the foundation in place to be not only a successful program, but also to compete for a national championship. The combination of a fine University and its proximity to world class golf makes UCF a recipe for success both on and off of the golf course. Having the school’s new practice facility so close to campus is another great benefit for our student-athletes. I am grateful to have this opportunity.”
Immediately prior to UCF, Trimble spent three and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Auburn University, working under long-time Tigers head coach Kim Evans. The Tigers finished the 2008-09 season ranked eighth nationally. Trimble also helped coach the Tigers to the 2006 and 2009 SEC Championships, four NCAA East Regional berths and three NCAA Championship appearances. The one-time AllAmerican player helped mentor several other Tiger All-Americans, including first-teamers Maria Martinez (2006), Cydney Clanton in 2008 and Candace Schepperle (2009), along with thirdteam pick Nicole Hage (2007) who also earned honorable mention All-America accolades in 2006.

Favorite athlete: Fred Couples Favorite quote: “If you always do what you have always done you always get what you have always got.” Favorite thing to do in Orlando: Eat at all of the great restaurants
Trimble also worked with consecutive SEC Freshmen of the Year in Schepperle (2007) and Clanton (2008). Clanton was also named the 2008 NGCA National Freshman of the Year. MARY BRYAN ASST. COACH FIRST SEASON E. NEW MEXICO It’s hard to imagine that the Knights, or any school, could ever have a more perfectly qualified assistant coach than Mary Bryan.
Bryan played full-time on the LPGA Tour for 13 seasons from 1971-84 and has also played in LPGA Senior Tour events.
Bryan brings a resume to UCF on a full-time basis that includes LPGA Tour playing experience, an ESPN and CBS broadcasting career, and toplevel instructional background at some of Orlando - and the country’s - finest golf academies. Packaged in an enthusiastic and energetic person and the Knights have an ideal coaching staff member.
She attended Eastern New Mexico in Portales where she earned a sociology degree in 1971. Bryan was the runner-up at the New Mexico State Amateur in 1968 while in college. The following year she won the state title back in her native Michigan.
“Mary brings years of experience in the whole golf industry,” UCF head coach Courtney Trimble said of Bryan. “She was a great player on the LPGA Tour. She’s been a commentator for ESPN and CBS for years and she’s also a very good teacher. She brings a lot of knowledge and years of great experience on and off of the golf course. She will help the team in a lot of ways. Her knowledge will really help the team develop their golf games. Off the course she has incredible positive energy and she knows a lot of the many golf courses in Orlando.”
Bryan has been a fixture on the broadcasting scene with over 300 national broadcasts on ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, The Golf Channel and also the PGA Radio Network. Her broadcasting career also includes the NCAA Championships. Bryan was the first woman to ever broadcast a men’s major PGA Tour event when the PGA Championship came to the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Most recently, Bryan taught the great game of golf as an instructor at the Grand Cypress Academy of Golf in Orlando. The Academy has been rated amongst the top 25 golf schools in America annually since 1999. “Not everybody who can play can teach,” said Fred Griffin, director of the academy and himself considered one of the top teachers of the game in America. “Real skill and talent are required to work effectively with someone who is just learning the game or wanting to improve. Mary has that ability.” Now the Knights are able to benefit from that ability each and every day.
