ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Brynn Harvey had two scores and senior Brett Hodges threw the game-winning touchdown in his first game as a Knight as UCF (1-0) held off visiting Samford (01) to post a 28-24 victory in its season opener at Bright House Networks Stadium. Harvey rushed 31 times for 111 yards, his second career 100-yard game, and added a two-point conversion reception. In his first game at UCF, Hodges finished the game 10-for-17 with 129 yards and the key fourth-quarter touchdown. With 10:53 left in the game, Hodges hit junior Jamar Newsome on a slant for a nine-yard touchdown, capping a short four-play, 32-yard drive and giving UCF a lead that the defense would make stand. A pair of big plays by senior Rocky Ross set up the touchdown. He returned a punt 39 yards to the Samford 32-yard line and then caught a 20-yard pass from Hodges on the game’s next play. Ross had a big game in his return from injury as the senior finished with a team-high 176 all-purpose yards. With the game tied at 7-7 coming out of halftime, true freshman Quincy McDuffie returned the second half’s opening kickoff 95 yards to give UCF a 13-7 lead. Two big plays by the visitors, a 67-yard touchdown reception and an interception return for a touchdown, gave Samford a 21-13 edge with 13:12 left in the third quarter. However, Harvey’s second touchdown of the contest was a oneyard plunge that ended an 11-play, 71-yard drive with 7:40 left in the third quarter. Hodges found him with a pass on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21. UCF held the Samford rushing attack to just 78 yards on 30 carries, an average of just 2.6 yards per rush. In the first half, the Bulldogs dented the scoreboard first in the game with 10:23 remaining in the second quarter when Riley Hawkins hauled in a 29-yard pass in the back of the end zone from Dustin Taliaferro. UCF knotted the game at 7-7 with just 57 ticks left before halftime on a Harvey one-yard touchdown run. The score was set up by a 21-yard reception by junior Kamar Aiken just outside the goal line. Hodges went 3-for-4 for 37 yards on the drive.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Senior quarterback Brett Hodges went 15for-26 and threw for two touchdowns but was unable to help UCF erase an early 14-0 deficit as it fell in its Conference USA opener at Southern Miss, 26-19. Hodges finished with a career-high 158 yards in the air and no interceptions for the Knights (1-1, 0-1). A total of seven different players hauled in receptions for UCF against Southern Miss (2-0, 1-0), with senior Rocky Ross leading the way with five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. Junior Kamar Aiken, meanwhile, pulled in four receptions, including a dazzling TD catch in the second quarter. Ball control was the story in the early minutes of the first quarter as UCF fumbled twice in its first three possessions. The second turnover gave Southern Miss the initial lead when sophomore quarterback Rob Calabrese coughed it up on his own 22-yard line and Martez Smith returned it to the house for a touchdown. Following a Knights’ punt, the Golden Eagles needed 1:39 to drive 44 yards and put it back in the endzone, capped off by an 18-yard strike from Austin Davis to Leroy Banks. Hodges then took over under center for UCF and helped the offense put together an 18-play drive using small gains to wear down the defense. Only one of those plays was over 10 yards - a 20-yard reception by Aiken that put the Black and Gold at USM’s 9-yard line. But that’s where it would stall, and sophomore Nick Cattoi booted a 28-yard field goal with 11:20 remaining in the second quarter to make it 14-3. Southern Miss would add a field goal of its own on its next possession, but the Knights would strike again. Kick-started by a 19-yard toss to Aiken, Hodges would later find junior Brian Watters on a 20-yard gain to get into Golden Eagle territory. One play later and Hodges connected with Ross for 29 yards. Eventually on third down and the ball resting on the USM-4, the UCF quarterback pump-faked and placed it perfectly in the back of the endzone for a leaping Aiken, who just got his foot in to cut the deficit to 17-10. While UCF hoped to keep it a one-possession game going into halftime, Southern Miss took it all the way from its own-17 to the UCF19 in the final minute, setting up Justin Estes’ 36-yard field goal. Now trailing 20-10 and with the end of the third quarter approaching, USM’s Freddie Parham mishandled a UCF punt and junior Reggie Weams was there to fall on it on the USM-48. Six plays later and Cattoi converted his longest-career field goal, a 50-yarder that put the score at 20-13 with 12:18 left in the fourth quarter. It was the eighth-longest FG in UCF history. Midway through the fourth, the Golden Eagles put the game away with a nine-play drive that culminated in a Damion Fletcher 5-yard touchdown run. Even though junior Jamar Newsome returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards and Hodges hooked up with Ross on a five-yard touchdown pass to the back of the endzone, the Knights could not recover the onside kick with just over a minute showing on the clock.

ORLANDO, Fla. - If you buy into the theory that one half can turn around a season, UCF delivered the kind of spectacular football over the final 30 minutes that could very well alter the course ahead. Trailing by 10 after a somewhat listless first half on both sides of the ball, UCF responded in a big way by scoring all of the game’s 16 second-half points and beat Buffalo 23-17 at Bright House Networks Stadium. Led by steady quarterback Brett Hodges, UCF’s offense converted on third down time and again and mounted four scoring drives in the second half. And UCF’s defense forced three fumbles and got a pivotal interception from safety Derrick Hallman - the Knights’ first pick of the season - all after halftime. UCF (2-1) rallied from a double-digit deficit for the first time since 2005, a 12-point come-from-behind victory against Rice. And the Knights left the game feeling somewhat reborn following a secondhalf performance that turned a possible loss into a thrilling victory. Tailback Brynn Harvey ran for 98 yards and two scores, his second multi-touchdown game of the season. And five receivers caught passes, led by blossoming junior Jamar Newsome, who had six catches. Kamar Aiken had 53 yards receiving, including a clutch over-the-shoulder catch for 39 yards on a third down play in the third quarter. Hodges saved the Knights with a flawless second half. He repeatedly kept plays alive by shuffling in the pocket, and he burned an unsuspecting Buffalo defense with 13 carries for 71 yards. His perfect 10-of-10 passing in the second half allowed him to complete 15 of 20 passes for 141 yards, but it was his running out of the ``wildcat’’ formation that most were impressed with. Picking up where Hodges left off, UCF’s defense did the rest. Senior defensive end Jarvis Geathers recorded three sacks and forced two fumbles. Buffalo’s final two drives were stopped by Geathers’ sack/ forced fumble plays - loose balls that were recovered by Darius Nall and Torrell Troup. Hallman, who had been critical of his play through the first two games, made a game-saving interception on a fourth-and-eight play with 3 minutes remaining. His interception was UCF’s first of the season and fulfilled a promise he had made to his teammates earlier in the week. The 1958 University at Buffalo team that refused a bid to the Tangerine Bowl when it was asked by Orlando leaders to not include its two African-American players was honored at halftime. Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty spearheaded the movement to honor the team 51 years later with a trip to Orlando, securing sponsorships so that 34 of the 41 living players, coaches and staff could attend the game. Gerry Gergley, a 2003 UCF Hall of Fame inductee and a halfback on the ‘58 Buffalo team, was among the players honored.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Trailing 19-7 with just over 60 seconds remaining, UCF cut it to 19-14 and recovered the ensuing on-side kick, but East Carolina intercepted a Brett Hodges pass at midfield to seal the Pirates’ Conference USA victory at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The loss dropped the Knights’ record to 2-2 for the season and 0-2 in league play. A.J. Guyton finished the day vs. ECU (2-2, 1-0) by setting careerhighs with nine receptions and 119 yards. Hodges also posted personal-bests with 21 completions on 34 attempts and 266 passing yards. On the ground, Brynn Harvey amassed 71 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. With 266 yards in the air, UCF racked up its most passing yards since Nov. 24, 2007, vs. UTEP (267 yards), and its 336 yards of total offense were a season-high. Led by Derrick Hallman’s 13 tackles, the Knights’ defense forced three fumbles, and Lawrence Young hauled in his first interception of the season. ECU appeared as though it would secure the early lead on its first drive of the game, only to witness UCF linebacker Jordan Richards strip running back Jon Williams inside the Knights’ 10-yard line and Young pounce on the loose ball. When Hodges and the offense returned to the field, the senior quarterback completed an 11-yard pass to Harvey on a short third-down play to get to the UCF-28. After a 13-yard reception by Guyton, Hodges found Kamar Aiken on a 40-yard deep ball down the left side of the field. One play later and Harvey scampered for a 19-yard touchdown, giving the Black and Gold a 7-0 advantage. The Pirates got back into the red zone on their next possession, but the UCF defense held them to just a 20-yard field goal by Ben Hartman. However, ECU eventually got into the endzone in the opening minutes of the second quarter, putting together a nineplay, 59-yard drive capped by a 25-yard run from Dwayne Harris. UCF came close to at least tying it up before halftime. Nick Cattoi saw a 26-yard field goal attempt blocked with 7:28 remaining, while a Knights’ drive stalled at the ECU-4 when Jay Ross intercepted Hodges a couple of minutes later. Neither team could gain momentum in the third quarter, but Hartman would add a 19-yard field goal just before the fourth to bring ECU’s lead to 13-7. After Cattoi missed on a 45-yard boot with 13:35 showing on the clock, the Pirates went 72 yards on 15 plays, including a pair of long third-down conversions, setting up a three-yard strike from Pat Pinkney to Harris. Although East Carolina’s two-point conversion failed, it still led 19-7. The Knights would later take over with under 2:30 to play, and Hodges worked quickly, going 5-for-5 and taking UCF down the field in just 1:17. Rocky Ross, Corey Rabazinski and Guyton all had receptions during that stretch, but it was Aiken who hauled in the 10-yard touchdown pass. While the Knights successfully recovered the onside kick, Van Eskridge picked off Hodges on the next play to end the UCF threat.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Just minutes after UCF completed its third comefrom-behind victory of the season at Bright House Networks Stadium, jubilant Knights players huddled around coach George O’Leary and chanted ``One more step!” in unison. Following a frustrating loss at East Carolina where the Knights played well but sabotaged the effort with mistakes, UCF took the necessary steps for a runaway 32-14 defeat of Memphis before 40,408 fans. UCF (3-2 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA play) rallied this time by finishing drives offensively, pressuring the quarterback, forcing turnovers and eliminating the mistakes. The theme in practice all week was to take ``One more step,’’ a phrase that had both literal and physical meanings. UCF took some big steps offensively, getting two second-half touchdown passes from senior quarterback Brett Hodges and a career-rushing day from sophomore tailback Brynn Harvey. The play of Hodges and Harvey, combined with some stellar line play, allowed UCF’s offense to roll up a whopping 475 yards, 28 first downs and 39 minutes of time of possession. The dominant second-half performance sent UCF into its bye week with some feel-good momentum. And the third consecutive home victory gave the Knights some confidence before hosting in-state foe Miami on Oct. 17. Memphis (1-4, 0-2) led 14-9 late in the third quarter when senior quarterback Will Hudgens replaced starter Tyler Bass and hit DajLeon Farr for an 11-yard touchdown pass. But Hodges responded with quite possibly the most important drive of the season for the Knights. He capped the 92-yard drive - the longest of the season - by hitting Kay for a 7-yard score on the final play of the third quarter to put UCF up 15-14. Hodges, who passed for 214 yards and wasn’t sacked, found Jamar Newsome for a 22-yard score with 7:28 to play to put UCF up 22-14. Hodges said he’s pleased that UCF seems to be a stronger team in the second half of games, but he’s still waiting for the day when the team puts four quarters together. Harvey did the rest of the work, carrying the ball 42 times for 219 yards - both career highs. It was the fourth-highest total of carries in a game in school history and the sixth-best total for rushing yards. His 25-yard touchdown sprint with 41 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Knights. Factor in Nick Cattoi’s four field goals - tying another school record and a UCF defense that garnered three sacks and two interceptions and it was just the kind of complete victory that the Knights needed. By finally putting it all together, they indeed took ``one more step.’’

ORLANDO, Fla. - By the end of a blustery night, a record crowd was mostly gone and Bright House Networks Stadium was half empty rather than rocking in celebration. On this night, there would be no defining, landmark victory for UCF and instead just the frustration of having missed out on too many opportunities. When UCF failed to convert from the 2-yard line late in the third quarter when it trailed by just 10 points, its chances of defeating No. 9 Miami seemed to wither away. Ultimately a 27-7 loss to the rival Hurricanes left the Knights shaking their heads in frustration and left a crowd of 48,453 numb from something other than the windy conditions. Hoping to take down the reborn, rebuilt Hurricanes and establish themselves among the Sunshine State’s Famed Big Three, UCF failed to produce an error-free performance. Their fatal flaw once again - as it has been much of the season - was an inability to get points after moving into scoring position. UCF (3-3) got no points after driving to the 15-yard line on the first possession of the game. And the three-play possession from the 2 - when Brynn Harvey was dropped for a four-yard loss on first down and Hodges was intercepted after being blindsided - proved crippling for the Knights. Get 10, 14 or even six points out of those two possessions and it certainly could have been a different game for UCF. Miami, clearly back among the powers now after navigating its way through one of the toughest schedules in the country, improved to 5-1. The Hurricanes got 293 yards from Jacory Harris and 363 yards of total offense. UCF’s defense kept the Knights in the game by relentlessly pressuring Harris all game. UCF recorded six sacks, the most in a game since last season against East Carolina. Cory Hogue had two sacks, while Darius Nall, Bruce Miller, David Williams and Jarvis Geathers each dropped Harris once. UCF electrified the largest crowd ever at Bright House Networks Stadium in the third quarter when they got within 17-7. Hodges hit on passes for 15, 41 and nine yards before finding Rocky Ross on an 8-yard slant pass for a touchdown. Just minutes later UCF seemed poised to get even closer to putting a major scare into the `Canes. A high punt snap gave UCF the ball at the 2-yard line after an illegal kicking penalty. But UCF went backwards on an option play - a call that O’Leary said he himself wondered about. The series that again gave UCF no points was a turning point in the game. Had UCF been able to solve its red-zone woes Saturday night, an upset might have been possible. Instead, UCF was once again frustratingly left with what-if scenarios.

HOUSTON, Texas - From the first snap of the game, UCF was in control and it never let up in a 49-7 win at Rice in Houston, Texas. The Knights (4-3, 2-2 Conference USA) won their 50th road game in program history as they scored their most points on the road since collecting 64 at Louisiana Tech on Sept. 5, 1998. Following the opening kickoff, Brett Hodges found A.J. Guyton on a 76-yard touchdown reception to give the Black and Gold a quick 7-0 lead against the Owls (0-8, 0-4). It was the longest TD catch since Doug Gabriel’s 80-yard scoring strike at Arizona State Sept. 7, 2002. Hodges went on to finish his outing 8-for-13 with 145 yards. Rob Calabrese also saw time under center, going 3-for-4 with 71 yards and two touchdowns. Guyton led the receivers with three receptions for 103 yards, and he also threw for a TD when he found Kamar Aiken on a 36-yarder in the second quarter. The most lopsided road win in UCF’s 31-year football history, the Knights built on its 7-0 advantage but this time put together a 14play drive capped off by a one-yard run from Hodges to make it 14-0. Only 1:27 later and UCF completed its first quarter scoring on a 27-yard scamper from Ronnie Weaver. Guyton’s touchdown pass to Aiken late in the second quarter provided the Knights with their 28-0 halftime lead, and it would keep up the offensive pressure in the third. Following Josh Robinson’s 24-yard interception return, Calabrese entered and hooked up with Jamar Newsome on a 52-yard touchdown pass for the 42-0 cushion. Rice may have ruined the shutout bid with 11:03 left in the fourth by way of a one-yard run from Charles Ross, but Calabrese came right back and connected with Ricky Kay on a 13-yard TD pass for the final 49-7 margin. On the defensive side of the ball, UCF notched five sacks and forced five fumbles, recovering three of them. In all, UCF outgained Rice 465 to 282 in total offensive yards.

ORLANDO, Fla. - With UCF’s players and coaches joyously celebrating and Bright House Networks Stadium throbbing with raw emotion, the Knights finally had their signature moment and the kind of defining victory that could ultimately turn this season into a special one. When UCF wiped out a 13-point deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns - the final one with 23 seconds to play - the Knights improbably defeated Marshall 21-20 to capture the kind of victory that it has desperately sought all season. It might sound cliché, but UCF won only because it continued to fight on both sides of the ball until the final horn. The Knights got a game-saving strip of the football from standout defensive end Bruce Miller with 2:12 to play, a moment that set up UCF’s winning score. Gritty senior quarterback Brett Hodges then found Rocky Ross for a one-yard score to tie the game with 23 seconds to play. Nick Cattoi’s point-after boot provided the game-winning point and set off an eruption of emotion from the 35,676 inside the stadium. The night looked like it would be another forgettable one, much like the close loss to the University of Miami two weeks earlier, when Hodges’ fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 2:40 to play with the Knights down 20-14. But two plays later, Miller made the play of his collegiate career. Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson had the ball locked away with two hands, but Miller was able to rip it from his grasp. Freshman defensive back Josh Robinson, who had his third interception of the season earlier in the game, recovered the loose ball to give UCF one more shot. And UCF was able to get it in the end zone largely because of a 19-yard strike from Hodges to Kamar Aiken that got the Knights down to the one-yard line with 26 seconds to play. From there, Hodges faked the ball to Brynn Harvey and found Ross open in the end zone for the tying score. UCF was behind the field-position battle most of the first half, and as it turned out, that cost the Knights dearly. UCF mustered just two first downs on its first four possessions. That allowed Marshall to either start or drive into UCF territory five times in the first half. The Herd led 17-7 at the break. Trailing 7-0 early in the second quarter after a shaky start offensively, UCF grabbed some momentum and got back in the game. Hodges had completions of 15 and 14 yards and a Jonathan Davis 15-yard sprint around right end put UCF in scoring position. And UCF rewarded O’Leary’s decision to go for it on fourth-and-one when Hodges hit Kamar Aiken for a four-yard score. Aiken wisely cut the corner route short, coming back to the ball for his fourth TD catch of the season and the 10th of his career. As has been the case all season, UCF suffered a staggering moment in the red zone. Nick Cattoi’s field goal try from 48 yards was tipped at the line and Marshall’s Ashton Hall fielded the kick at the fiveyard line. He returned it 68 yards, taking the wind out of UCF’s sails.

AUSTIN, Texas - For nearly three quarters Saturday, the UCF defense contained No. 2 Texas’ offense. Despite a valiant effort from the Knights, Texas used a score late in the third quarter and a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away from UCF and post a 35-3 win at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas led just 14-3 at halftime, and did not put the game out of reach until the 3:11 mark of the third quarter when Colt McCoy found James Kirkendoll for a 14-yard touchdown reception. UCF was playing without starting quarterback Brett Hodges and starting tailback Brynn Harvey. Both sat out the game due to injury. Starting in place of Hodges, Rob Calabrese guided the UCF offense to several promising drives, but the Knights were unable to find the end zone. UCF’s lone score came three minutes into the game when Nick Cattoi hit a field goal to give the team a 3-0 edge. Calabrese finished the game 10-of-19 for 76 yards. Filling in for Harvey, Jonathan Davis had 22 carries for 71 yards. Cody Johnson had two rushing touchdowns in the first half for the Longhorns. Texas appeared to be heading for another score towards the end of the second quarter, but Josh Robinson picked off McCoy at the UCF 14 to halt the drive. UCF and the Longhorns were meeting for the second time. In 2007, Texas escaped with a 35-32 win in the inaugural game at Bright House Networks Stadium. Trailing 21-3 early in the fourth quarter, the Knights appeared to stop Johnson in the end zone for a safety. The play was reviewed, and the ball was placed on the Texas one. Three plays later, McCoy found Jordan Shipley for an 88-yard touchdown pass. Texas totaled 470 yards through the air, and just 67 on the ground. McCoy completed 33-of-42 attempts in the winning effort. Cory Hogue paced the Knights with 12 total tackles.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Drenched in a mixture of sweat from a long, hot afternoon and ice water from a joyous locker room celebration, UCF defensive end Bruce Miller recounted a story from the night before when the Knights were shown inspirational footage from legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. The video montage of Ali showed him taking one punch after another only to answer the bell each time and come back to knock out an opponent. Then, after UCF’s players were worked into a frenzy, they were told how the Ali link would be a fitting metaphor for the showdown against No. 12 Houston at Bright House Networks Stadium. ``Like Ali, we took some punches and we took them early and we still kept fighting back,’’ Miller said after UCF’s thrilling 37-32 defeat of Houston. ``That was the moral of the story today, fighting back.’’ UCF battled back from 10-0 and 17-3 deficits and trailed at the half for the ninth time in 10 games, but it still had a good enough of a mixture of opportunistic offense and gritty defense to pull off a bit of history. The Knights (6-4 overall, 4-2 in Conference USA play) beat a ranked Football Bowl Subdivision team for the first time, a span of 23 games. It was also the first victory against a ranked team in 10 tries in George O’Leary’s six seasons at UCF. A UCF defense that forced three turnovers and an offense that controlled the ball almost twice as much as Houston’s potent offense (39.5 minutes to 20.5 minutes) helped the Knights bring an end to Case Keenum’s bid for the Heisman. The junior quarterback entered the game on pace to break the NCAA record for passing yards in a season, but managed only 377 yards. He was picked off once, sacked twice and forced to hurry many of his 56 attempts because of UCF’s swarming pressure. Keenum torched UCF for a 51-yard touchdown and 179 pass yards in the first quarter, but the Knights refused to wilt. Down 17-10 at the half, UCF responded with its most important stretch of football this season. UCF was no stranger to being behind, having trailed in every home game this season and in every game except the Rice rout. UCF strung together scoring drives of 51 yards and 85 yards to spring to a 23-17 lead. Brynn Harvey’s 41-yard sprint, one of his three TD runs on the day, was a thing of beauty as he hit the line at full speed and never broke stride as he crossed the goal line. And when UCF finished with a flourish, getting a 24-touchdown pass from Hodges to freshman Quincy McDuffie and a seven-yard plunge from Harvey, the Knights led 37-20 and the road was paved for one of the biggest wins in school history. Harvey, who rested a sore ankle last week against Texas, looked fresh on Saturday as he ran for 139 yards. UCF had to survive two late touchdown passes from Keenum and two onside kicks, but when the game was complete UCF finally had a big win and the crowd of 36,776 pulsated with emotion.

ORLANDO, Fla. - This is how shockingly far UCF has progressed in a matter of one calendar year: A Knights team that limped to the finish line last November and was embarrassingly shut out in their finale has transformed now into a team that is doing the shutting out of foes and running up records in the process. UCF’s light years of growth were clearly evident again as it repeatedly gashed Tulane with numerous big plays and the defense delivered another dominating performance in an easy, breezy 49-0 rout at Bright House Networks Stadium. It proved to be the largest shutout victory ever in Conference USA play, beating the previous mark of 33-0 by Southern Miss against Houston in 1997. It should be pointed out here that UCF was shutout 15-0 by UAB last November, showing just how much the Knights have progressed. The lopsided numbers on both sides of the ball were tremendously gaudy for a 7-4 UCF team that is playing as well as any Knights squad since the 2007 edition won the Conference USA title. If the game against 3-8 Tulane were a fight, officials would have stepped in and stopped it. To wit: ---- UCF held Tulane to a minus-30 yards rushing, making it the second best performance by any defense in the nation this season. UCF’s defensive line was in the backfield almost more than Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin, registering three sacks and eight tackles for loss. ---- UCF held the Green Wave to just 50 total yards on 51 plays. It’s the fewest total yards a C-USA team has ever allowed in a game since the league’s formation. And a UCF offense that embarrassingly ranked 119th in the country last season showed off its monumental strides by putting up some spectacular numbers of their own. Such as: ---- UCF’s 504 yards were the most since the 2007 championship team had 506 at UAB. ---- The 49-point margin of victory is tied for the eighth-best in school history and is the largest win since 2001. And including the 37-32 defeat of Houston last Saturday, the Knights have scored 86 points in the past two games. ---- Brynn Harvey ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 268 yards and six touchdowns over his past two games. He became the first Knight back since Kevin Smith to run for at least 100 yards in back-to-back games. And his 50-yard score on the game’s fourth play matched the longest of his career. In a bizarre twist, UCF had drives of 14 plays and 13 plays in the first half in which it didn’t score, but later scored quick-strike touchdowns on drives of two, one and three plays. A resilient second-half team most of the season, UCF led at halftime for just the second time all season. The Knights rallied in the second half against Samford, Buffalo, Memphis, Marshall and Houston for wins, but no such comeback would be needed on this day.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For anyone looking for quantitative proof as to just how markedly far the UCF football team has progressed over a year’s time, start with Nov. 29, 2008, and zip ahead to the Knights’ contest at historic Legion Field. It was almost a year ago exactly when the Knights limped off the field at Bright House Networks Stadium embarrassed by a 15-0 defeat to UAB. Now, move ahead to this season when UCF’s offense so easily moved the ball and gashed UAB that punter Blake Clingan might as well have had the day off. Whether it was through the air or on the ground, UCF did as it pleased with the ball - clearly a 180-degree turnaround from a year ago. And when the Knights hung on down the stretch with one defensive stop after another in a 34-27 defeat of UAB, many of UCF’s players marveled at the incredible jump from 4-8 to 8-4 over the past 364 days. UCF rolled up 435 yards of offense, scored on six of its first nine possessions and wasn’t forced to punt until just 8:33 remained in the game. They had to weather a furious fourth-quarter rally by UAB quarterback Joe Webb (459 total yards, four TDs), but UCF was not about to let a shaky finish overshadow an otherwise stellar afternoon. UCF sophomore tailback Brynn Harvey ran for 130 yards and a 25yard touchdown, allowing him to top 1,000 yards for the season. Hodges, the senior transfer from Wake Forest who rescued the UCF offense with his steady play, passed for 230 yards and two TDs. Clearly, the Knights have figured out the source of their slow starts to games. They trailed in nine of the first 10 games at the half, but jumped up 14-0 last week against Tulane and surged ahead 24-14 by the break on Saturday. But Webb single-handedly kept the Blazers within striking distance early on. He had a 23-yard TD strike to Patrick Hearn in the first quarter and he ripped off a spectacular 53-yard scramble for another score in the second quarter. Webb, who has accounted for more than 70 percent of UAB’s offense on the season, had 188 of the Blazers 226 yards in the first half. UCF didn’t punt in the first half and scored on four of its first six possessions, gashing UAB both with Hodges’ accurate passing and Harvey’s hard running between the tackles. Hodges hit on 12 of his first 16 passes and had 129 yards by the time the game was just 17 minutes old. And Harvey, who seems to be picking up steam as the season has progressed, topped the 1,000-yard mark for the season early in the second period with an 18-yard scamper off left end. Hodges had touchdown passes of 12 yards (to Kamar Aiken) and five yards (to fullback Billy Giovanetti) and threw for 188 yards against the nation’s 120th ranked pass defense in the first half. UCF missed two other chances to grow its lead when Hodges uncharacteristically threw interceptions at the 11 and 3-yard line. He tried forcing a pass in on the first error and was hit from behind on the second one. It was Hodges’ first multi-interception games since Sept. 26 when he had a dismal four-interception day at East Carolina.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The St. Petersburg Bowl presented what seemed to be a perfect storm for UCF on Saturday night what with 20,000 of its fans packed inside Tropicana Field and a hot football team positioned for the first bowl victory in school history. But an avalanche of errors combined with speedy, physical opponent in Rutgers ruined what could have been a dreamy, feel-good night for UCF’s program and its hopeful fanbase. Down four points late in the second quarter, UCF allowed an interception return to sap its momentum and the Knights could never mount much of a comeback in a disappointing 45-24 loss to Rutgers in the second St. Petersburg Bowl presented by Beef `O’ Brady’s. ``As I told the players, I’m embarrassed for the football team that we didn’t go out and do a better job for the fanbase and for the football program,’’ UCF coach George O’Leary said. ``I thought we beat ourselves a lot in a lot of situations out there,’’ a frustrated O’Leary continued. ``Right now, Rutgers defense was just a lot better than our offense and that was the difference in the game.’’ UCF (8-5) had hoped that the momentum of a strong finish to the regular season, one in which it won the final six conference games and knocked off Marshall, Houston and UAB down the stretch, would carry over to the bowl game. But problems on both sides of the ball sabotaged the Knights’ chances of pulling off the upset in this game. UCF netted just 35 yards on the ground, 33 of them coming in the fourth quarter when the outcome of the game was already decided. And in the passing game, two Brett Hodges’ interceptions led to 14 points for Rutgers, bowl winners for a fourth consecutive season. And UCF’s defense yielded 380 yards and eight third-down conversions. Playing before roughly 20,000 Knights fans among the Tropicana Field crowd of 29,763, UCF had hopes of capturing the first bowl victory in school history. In a bowl game for the third time in five years, UCF lost previously in 2005 in the Hawaii Bowl (49-48 OT) and in the 2007 Liberty Bowl (10-3). ``The offense put up 14 points and a field goal early and defensively we played our butts off. We didn’t want to go out like this, and this is so disappointing,’’ senior defensive tackle Travis Timmons said. ``It’s just such a big letdown. We’re 0-14 now against Big East teams and 0-3 in bowl games. Torrell (Troup), Bruce (Miller) and myself along the defensive line wanted to change all of that, but unfortunately things didn’t go the way we wanted them to.’’ Rutgers (9-4) played like an experienced team in its fifth consecutive bowl, using big plays on offense and an attacking defense to frustrate the Knights. Rutgers got six sacks and two interceptions defensively and freshman quarterback Tom Savage threw for 294 yards and two TDs. Said Rutgers coach Greg Schiano: ``We’ve been to five straight bowls with four straight wins in bowl games. You have to be consistent before you can be great. We’ll be great someday.’’
