2010 Season Outlook D
ue to a long-enduring string of injuries which plagued the UCF volleyball team last season, head coach Todd Dagenais was forced to send six different freshmen and three sophomores, onto the court at different times throughout the year. The situation was not ideal for the Black and Gold in 2009, but the experience the young Knights received will definitely pay large dividends in 2010 with those student-athletes being a year older and exceptionally wiser. Juniors Kristin Fisher and Sara Rex will be looked upon to lead the fresh-faced squad this season, a group which consists of four juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen. A season ago, Fisher led UCF with 24 service aces, while ranking second on the squad with 359 kills, a 3.18 kills-per-set average, 12 block solos and 407.5 points as an outside hitter. She was also one of only three Knights to play in all 30 matches. Rex was also a major role player in UCF’s system in 2009, finishing her sophomore season with a .285 hitting percentage, 100 kills, 62 total blocks and a 0.83 blocks-per-game average. The middle blocker would have tallied even higher numbers had she not missed the final six matches of the year due to an injury. The duo will have a different path to lead their young squad down than their predecessors, however, as Conference USA coaches and league officials have done away with the C-USA Volleyball Championship starting this season. In order to be crowned the league champion and earn C-USA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Championship, the Knights must win the regular-season title. Despite having a new schedule and more than a handful of talented new faces, the Black and Gold may be more poised than ever to make a run at the C-USA title. Thanks to long hours logged on the recruiting trail in the offseason, Dagenais and his staff were able to put together an extremely talented group of newcomers in 2010. One so talented, in fact, that the class was named one of the top-100 in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. “We recruited the freshmen not only because of their ability, but mostly because of their personalities,” Dagenais said. “They have just fit right into the group. The recruiting process has become so involved. They come to campus so many times and spend so much time with our players, that our team is just waiting for them to get here.” Those recruits will have an immediate impact on how successful this season can be, already vying for spots in the Knights’ lineup. Setter Two newcomers are battling for the job as UCF’s setter, with both junior transfer Rachel Vukson and freshman Marie Reiterova proving early that they could both start on the floor come the season-opener on Aug. 27.

“I was hoping that maybe we would know for sure who our setter would be right now,” Dagenais said. “But, Marie has had a little injury that has sidetracked her for a couple days, and in the meantime Rachel has come in and had all of the reps with the first team and has done an outstanding job. So, we have a setter battle on our hands right now.” Vukson is extremely familiar with the rigors of playing in C-USA, having transferred to UCF from league-foe Tulsa. With the Golden Hurricane, Vukson was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2008, while compiling 1,902 assists, 74 kills, 47 service aces and 95 blocks in 225 sets played in her career. Reiterova, however, is very comfortable with the way Dagenais runs his offense, having played all spring with the Black and Gold after enrolling at UCF in January. Reiterova played for both the Luxembourgish National Team and the Czech Junior National Beach Volleyball Team prior to making her way to Orlando, which gives her immense international experience despite coming in as a rookie. Libero One would imagine that Meredith Murphy would have the libero position on lock heading into late August, having broken the UCF single-season record with a 4.27 digs-per-set average and played in all 115 sets as a freshman last season, but fellow sophomore Dani Harrison, in Dagenais’ opinion, is one of the most improved players since the end of last season. “The other battle that I am shocked we are having is the battle at libero,” Dagenais said. “It is not that Meredith has gone backwards, it is that Dani could very well be the most improved player that we have had since January. I know at the very least we are going to have outstanding back-court play. We just might end up bouncing back-and-forth between the two of them for a while.” Freshman Roxy Mendez also looks to make a name for herself in the back court this season. The Orlando native led Timber Creek High School to the Florida 6A State Championship in 2008 as its libero, before being named to the all-state, all-metro and all-conference first teams as a senior. Outside Hitter With Fisher having established herself as the Knights’ top outside hitter, Dagenais is looking to have a tough decision to make as to who will claim the No. 2 outside hitter spot. Having made a full recovery from an ACL tear incurred early last season, redshirt junior Brittanie Wallace is the prime candidate for the number-two spot. A transfer from Sam Houston State last season, Wallace saw action in eight matches, totaling 12 kills, 14 digs and two blocks before being sidelined. After redshirting the 2009 season, Angelica Crump is also making noise as one of the top outside hitters for the Black and Gold after putting up some impressive numbers against BIG EAST opponents Marquette and USF during UCF’s spring campaign.
“Angelica has vastly improved since last season,” Dagenais said. “She put up over 20 kills against Marquette and turned around and put up 20 kills against South Florida in spring competition. We can’t ignore that kind of production. So it sure seems like Angelica has an inside track at the other outside hitting position opposite Kristin, but Brittanie will be in there as well. Freshman Katie Tatum, a two-time Piedmont Athletic Conference 6 Player of the Year, could also be a potential threat toward the latter part of the season. Tatum averaged 4.70 kills per set as a senior at Person High School, while also leading her team to two North Carolina 4A State Championships. On the right side, sophomore southpaw Evija Vilde will likely remain the mainstay after tallying 255 kills, 57 blocks and 288 points as a rookie. “Evija more than likely has secured her spot in the right side with that left hand,” Dagenais said. “I really think that she is going to have a great year. Our outside hitting core is as strong as a group as we have has since we’ve been here. In college volleyball you need to have strong outside hitters, because outside hitters win the match.” Middle Blockers Along with Rex, the Black and Gold have immeasurable depth at the middle hitter position. Dagenais returns Rex, sophomore Tory McCutcheon and redshirt freshman Nichole Riedel, while also welcoming in freshmen Kaye-Alese Green and Allison Rinderknecht. McCutcheon finished her rookie season ranked fifth in C-USA with a .327 hitting percentage, and also added a team-best 63 blocks and a 0.84 blocks-per-set average in only 18 starts. Originally slated to redshirt the 2009 season, McCutcheon missed the first 11 matches of the year before being called into the C-USA opener against Southern Miss due to injuries incurred to her teammates. One of those teammates was Riedel. After suffering a season-ending injury only 10 matches into her freshman campaign, Riedel returns to the court healthy and eager to continue the dominance she showed early last season when she was named to the Radisson-UCF Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Denver native registered 50 kills, 28 blocks and 11 service aces in nine starts. “Nichole is completely over her torn abdominal muscle and has had a great preseason camp,” Dagenais said. “We have started to explore moving her into some different positions as well. Middle is her best position, but we think somewhere down the road she may be a better right side hitter.” Rinderknecht is the only newcomer vying for a middle blocker position on the floor this fall, as fellow freshman Green is recovering from an injury incurred back in March. Rinderknecht was a three-time all-county honorable mention selection at St. Augustine High School and led her team to the regional semifinals in 2008.
Todd Dagenais Head Coach - Third Season with the Knights Todd Dagenais enters his third season as the UCF head volleyball coach in 2010, holding a 27-35 record heading into the year. In his sophomore coaching campaign with the Black and Gold, Dagenais helped guide outside hitter Erin Campbell to the team's second-consecutive All-Conference USA selection when she was honored with a spot on the league's second team at the conclusion of the 2009 season. The skipper also honed the skills of his younger players in 2009, as six freshmen saw playing time at one time or another during the season. In his first campaign at UCF, Dagenais made his presence known and proved quickly that he has what it takes to put UCF volleyball on the national map. Under Dagenais, the Knights posted a 15-17 overall record, its best mark since 2003, and matched its best C-USA record, going 6-10 in the fifth-toughest volleyball conference in the nation.
the 1978 UCF volleyball squad that claimed the AIAW National Championship. In the summer of 2009, Daganais served as a member of the staff at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Dagenais was a court coach and evaluator at the event, putting the players through physical testing, drills and match play. The skipper was also selected by Championship Productions, one of the countries leading sports instructional video companies, to make an instructional video on how to train a libero. Before assuming the post at UCF, Dagenais spent three seasons as the assistant head coach at the University of Southern California where he helped guide the Trojans to a 29-5 record in 2007 and a trip to the 2007 NCAA Final Four for the fourth time in six seasons. USC closed out a successful 2007 campaign by ranking third in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.
Dagenais was also part of the USA Volleyball National Team Coaching Delegation to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He spent UCF jumped from 244 to 113 on the NCAA prior time as a volunteer assistant coach with Women's Volleyball RPI with Dagenais at the the USA National Team and joined the team on helm, an improvement of 131 spots, and de- domestic and foreign tours. He played on the Chippewas' men's club team for four years and was also a certified athletic trainer. His coaching philosophy has been a fusion of several different styles learned while working under former National Team and Michigan State head coach Chuck Erbe, 2000 Olympic Team head coach Toshi Yoshida and 2004 Olympic head coach and current University of Southern California head coach Mick Haley. "Chuck taught me that the discipline of the game is paramount to a student-athlete overachieving on and off the court," Dagenais said. "Toshi taught me to see the game at the international level, and showed me how a small matter of a few degrees of excellence means the difference of being in position to be successful or not. Mick is probably the most amazing people manager I have ever worked with. He is such a creative volleyball thinker, always finding a way to maximize individual members of a team toward a collective goal. I learned so much from his ability to manage a match in the most critical situations."

Erik Peterson Assistant Coach - Second Season with the Knights ts Erik Peterson enters his second season as an assistant coach for the UCF volleyball team in 2010. Prior to coaching in Orlando, Peterson spent four seasons as the assistant coach at USF. While with the Bulls, he helped guide the squad from a 4-22 record in his first season with the team to a 19-10 record in three short years. Peterson's primary duties at USF were developing the skills of both the outside hitters and defensive specialists and serving as the secondary recruiter and director of volleyball operations.
Peterson began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Florida in 2003. That season, he helped lead the Gators to the NCAA Championship match and a 36-2 record. Peterson's primary duties while at Florida were assisting with on-court training and individual sessions, scouting of opponents' offensive tendencies and charting video for the All-America Selection Committee.
The assistant's first coaching opportunity was at McIntosh High School in 1999. As the head coach of the freshman team, he led his squad to a 15-1 record. Peterson then moved into club coaching as the assistant coach of the South Atlanta Volleyball Club. Dagenais’ Top-10 From 2009 Following the 2009 UCF volleyball season, head coach Todd Dagenais shared his top-10 moments from a year in which the Knights laid the foundation for the future of the UCF volleyball program.
1
Defeating USF at the Corral to end the 2009 season Date: Nov. 25 Score: UCF 3, USF 2 (26-24, 18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6) Why it mattered: The Knights entered their final match of the 2009 season looking for three things: to break a six-match losing skid, avenge their loss to the Bulls from VolleyBowl II and send the team’s three seniors away from UCF with a win. The Black and Gold accomplished all three of those goals with a thrilling five-set win over USF on Nov. 25 at the Corral to conclude the year. UCF had five different players post double-digit kills and hit .329 as a team in the contest.
4
Posting an 8-2 record through the team’s first 10 matches of the season Date: Aug. 28-Sept. 11 Why it mattered: After starting the season with a 5-0 clip, UCF would go on to post victories over UTSA, High Point and UNC Greensboro during the secondfive matches of the year. During the span, the Knights’ only two losses came to host Baylor, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season, and Purdue, who was ranked No. 24 in the AVCA Coaches Poll at the time of the teams’ meeting. The 8-2 mark was the best mark through the first 10 matches of the season since UCF opened the year at 8-2 to open the 2001 season.
5
Starting the season with a 5-0 record for the first time since 1995 Date: Aug. 28-Sept. 1 Why it Mattered: The Knights claimed the RadissonUCF Invitational title with wins over Jacksonville, North Florida, Florida Atlantic and DePaul, before downing Bethune-Cookman on the road to open the season with a 5-0 record. Previous to 2009, the last time the Black and Gold opened a season with fivestraight victories was in 1995. After dropping the first set of the season in the opener against Jacksonville, UCF rebounded to win 15-consecutive sets during the stretch.
2
Tory McCutcheon’s collegiate-debut vs. Southern Miss Date: Sept. 18 Score: UCF 2, Southern Miss 3 (15-25, 21-25, 33-31, 25-16, 11-15) Why it mattered: Originally slated to redshirt her freshman season, Tory McCutcheon had no intention of taking the floor in UCF’s 12th match of the year, which just so happened to be the Knights’ Conference USA opener against Southern Miss. But, with three players out with injury prior to the match, and with a last-minute injury to Lauren Williams during warmups, Dagenais had no choice but to put the rookie into the contest and see what she could do. What she did was put together an amazing performance where she hit .462 with six kills and also totaled seven blocks. On the season, McCutcheon led UCF in hitting percentage (.327), block assists (59), total blocks (63) and blocks per set (.84), while also ranking fifth in kills (103).
3
Breaking the program attendance record vs. USF for VolleyBowl II at The Venue Date: Sept. 15 Score: UCF 0, USF 3 (23-25, 23-25, 23-25) Why it mattered: Despite falling short in the match-up with in-state rival USF, the Knights put on an intense show for the crowd of 1,603 UCF faithful that packed The Venue at UCF on Sept. 15. The attendance for the match was the largest in program-history, beating out the former record from last year’s crowd of 1,568 fans who saw the Knights take on Stanford.
6
Playing on national television on CBS College Sports at Marshall Date: Sept. 27 Score: UCF 2, Marshall 3 (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 12-15) Why it mattered: Not only was UCF playing in a nationally-televised event on the road, but it was also playing on the national stage with four starters out with injury. Despite the adversity that was staring them in the face, the Knights battled the Thundering Herd, who was atop league standings at the time, to five sets and gave their audience a thrilling event to watch.
7
The Knights’ come-from-behind victory at UNC Greensboro Date: Sept. 11 Score: UCF 3, UNC Greensboro 2 (14-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-9) Why it mattered: After falling down two sets to host UNC Greensboro, UCF geared up in the third set for what would eventually become a monumental comeback on the road. With the score knotted 11-11 close to the midway point of the set, kills from Evija Vilde (Riga, Latvia) and Brittanie Wallace (Austin, Texas) gave the Knights a 14-11 cushion. UNCG would even the match twice toward the end, lastly at 23-23, but back-to-back kills from Vilde and Campbell gave the Knights the win and kept them alive in the match. UCF took the momentum from the third set and stormed out to a 13-7 lead in the fourth. The Spartans answered back with an 11-5 run to even the score, 18-18, but three kills and a service ace pushed the Knights past the home team and into a decisive-fifth
set. With the match on the line, the two teams battled to seven ties through the first 16 points, before a late surge of tenacity and heart guided the Black and Gold on a 7-1 run to win the set and close the book on an amazing comeback story.
8
Nearly upsetting No. 24 Purdue at the Baylor Classic Date: Sept. 5 Score: UCF 2, Purdue 3 (20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 13-15) Why it mattered: The Knights were merely three points away from upsetting No. 24 Purdue on the road at the Baylor Classic in early September. After falling in the first set, the Black and Gold rallied to win the second and the fourth, while holding a late lead in the deciding fifth set. Campbell led the young Knights on a late charge, posting a kill and a service ace to put her team within three points of an upset victory in that set, but a 4-1 run from the Boilermakers stopped the UCF comeback short and gave Purdue the win.
9
Breaking a seven-match losing streak with a sweep over Memphis at The Venue at UCF Date: Oct. 4 Score: UCF 3, Memphis 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-22) </A> Why it mattered: Prior to the UCF’s match-up with Memphis, the squad was looking to end a sevenmatch losing skid. Injuries continued to plague the young Knights, but, in front of the home crowd at The Venue, the Black and Gold put together a thrilling performance to sweep the Tigers, 3-0, and end the losing streak.
10
Erin Campbell registers 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs at East Carolina Date: Sept. 25 Score: UCF 1, East Carolina 3 (21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 1725) Why it Mattered: Heading into the Knights’ Conference USA match against East Carolina on Sept. 25, outside hitter Erin Campbell needed only eight kills and 20 digs to become just the fourth player in UCF program-history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. The senior did that and more, registering her sixth double-double of the year with 18 kills and 20 digs, while adding three block solos to pace UCF on the floor and put her name in the record books.
