Big moment. There are few bigger moments for someone in my line of work than the public launch of an ambitious comprehensive campaign. The gala kickoff of IGNITE: The Campaign for UCF on September 16 wasn’t my first, and I don’t expect it to be my last either, but it was singularly exciting. In my career, I’ve led fundraising activities at several very well-respected institutions. But I have never seen a university with the kind of potential we have to create a better tomorrow not just for our students, but also for our region and the world beyond. I’ve also never seen a more auspicious moment in the history of a university for a strategic infusion of philanthropic support. With your help, UCF is poised to emerge as a new model for public higher education in the 21st century. That’s a big claim, and I encourage you to explore the IGNITE website at igniteucf.org to learn why I’m confident in making it. As a donor to UCF, this probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard about IGNITE. But did you know that the campaign total already stands at roughly $290 million of the $500 million goal — and that your generosity helped get us there? Campaigns like IGNITE nearly always begin with a so-called “silent phase,” when volunteers and fundraisers intensify their efforts behind the scenes for several years leading up to the public kickoff. Because you gave to UCF during that time — whether it was $5 or $5 million — you’re part of this historic effort. Thank you! Encouraging as it might sound to be well past the halfway point of the campaign, the fact is that raising the remaining $210 million by the goal date of June 2019 is, to put it mildly, ambitious. I’m confident, though, that our extraordinary alumni, friends and partners will rise to the challenge together, fueling transformational change that will extend far beyond the borders of campus.

Launch. ON THE EVENING OF SEPTEMBER 16, UCF PUBLICLY launched the IGNITE Campaign, an intense, focused and strategic effort to channel the collective energies and resources of our alumni, friends, partners, faculty and staff toward a common goal: infusing the university with $500 million in mission-critical private support by the middle of 2019. At the time, the campaign total already stood at more than $274 million. As most such efforts do, IGNITE had begun four years earlier with a leadership phase, during which the university appealed to its most steadfast and generous friends for momentum-building commitments. The announcement came during a gala event on UCF’s main campus honoring nearly 600 of those leadership donors, highlighting the far-reaching impact of their generosity, and offering an inspiring vision of what campaign success will mean for UCF and Central Florida. “UCF has the potential to achieve incredible things,” said foundation CEO Michael Morsberger that evening, “but it will take incredible support to realize that potential. Game-changing. IN AUGUST, UCF ATHLETICS ANNOUNCED A $1.5 million commitment from John Euliano — a longtime donor and a member of the UCF Foundation Board of Directors — to help fund a major expansion and renovation of the UCF Baseball Complex. Slated to open for the 2018 season, the renovated facility — to be named John Euliano Park, pending approval by UCF’s Board of Trustees — will feature a new home plate tower with a 300-seat premium club section and an air-conditioned lounge, shaded bleacher
seating for more than 300 on the third-base side, an expanded and improved concessions building, clubhouse enhancements, and an upgraded audio system. “This is a big-time, game-changing gift for us,” said Director of Athletics Danny White. “We can’t thank John, Julie and their family enough.” “Baseball has always been a passion of mine,” Euliano said. “We are going to build a championship program, and I’m proud to be a small part of it.”

About love. CURAÇAO-BORN INTERNATIONAL LAWYER-BUSINESSman-philanthropist Greg Elias believes deeply not only in the power of music and the arts to make the world a better place, but also in the vital importance of the people who, as he puts it, “make the life of the performer possible.” He also believes in giving back, donating at least 30 percent of his considerable income every year since 1988. Together, those three beliefs motivated an extraordinary act — a very generous commitment by Elias in 2016 to establish the new Gregory Elias Entertainment Management program at UCF, a partnership between the Rosen College of Hospitality Management and the College of Arts and Humanities. Speaking to students in the new program during his first visit to campus in September 2016, Elias told them, “You are the ones who will make the life of the performer possible in the future. Stay true to your cause, true to what you believe in, and most of all stay true to the interest of the art.” Elias knows what he’s talking about. He’s the man behind the Rolling Stones’ historic March 2016 concert in Cuba, where rock music had been banned for years following the revolution. After convincing the Stones, through their manager, to play for free, he then financed and coordinated the monumental effort to produce the show in the island nation where virtually everything — even the stage — had to be flown in. “Success brings material possibilities,” Elias also said to the students during his visit to UCF, “not the other way around. It’s not about money, it’s about passion and love. If you don’t have the passion and love for what you are doing, you cannot succeed and be in a position to give, to be happy.” Greg Elias at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management

Tribute. WHEN GLENN HUBBARD ’79 — DEAN OF THE COLUMbia Business School and former advisor to then-President George W. Bush and the Federal Reserve Board — endowed a professorship in economics at UCF this year, he named it not to honor a loved one, but rather as a tribute to the two professors who taught him to love the subject. When Hubbard started at UCF in 1976, he wanted to become an engineer. But then he enrolled in an introductory economics course taught by Professor James Xander that changed his life. “He really opened my mind,” Hubbard wrote recently in Pegasus magazine. “I saw how mathematics and analysis could be tools to not only construct impressive skyscrapers and innovative machinery, but also build healthy, secure families, businesses and nations.” Later, Hubbard took courses from Professor Kenneth White. “White somehow managed to infuse statistical and numerical analysis with humor,” Hubbard wrote. “But as he entertained us, he also educated us about the vital need to make complex issues clear. Why? Because so many lives depend on economic decisions and seemingly small differences in economic growth rates.”
Now, the Kenneth White and James Xander Professorship in Economics will provide flexible funding and a prestigious title to help recruit more exceptional faculty members in the mold of White and Xander. “I don’t know if there’s another kid from Apopka whose destiny will be shaped by a UCF economics course,” wrote Hubbard. “But I do know that the more young people there are who understand both the basics of our national economy and their own personal finances, the more secure our future will be.”

Collective impact. Recognizing donors who give $1,000 to $24,999 in a given year, the UCF President’s Circle is as diverse and dynamic as the university it supports. In 2016, its 1,348 members included alumni, parents, staff and faculty, community members and hundreds of others with their own unique reasons for giving back. Collectively, they made 1,653 separate gifts totaling nearly $4 million in 2016, impacting areas from first-generation scholarships to post-doctoral fellowships, faculty excellence funds to new facilities, and cyber defense to sea turtle research. Every spring, President’s Circle members are honored at a reception hosted by UCF President John C. Hitt. This year’s celebration will be especially meaningful, coinciding with the milestone 25th year of the president’s remarkable tenure.

Moving downtown. IN EARLY 2016, UNIVERSITY LEADERS ACCEPTED A challenge to raise $20 million in community support for the first phase of the university’s new downtown Orlando campus in order to access an additional $20 million in state funding for the project. In September, the university announced that they had surpassed that number by more than $1 million, thanks in part to commitments of $7 million from Dr. Phillips Charities; $1.5 million each from the Orlando Magic, CFE Federal Credit Union and Florida Hospital; and more than $1 million in individual giving from UCF’s administrative leaders and volunteer board members. Orange County, the city of Orlando and Valencia College also made major commitments, and many more corporate, nonprofit and individual donors helped push this project from the drawing board toward groundbreaking. Spearheaded by UCF Provost and Executive Vice President A. Dale Whittaker and now led by Vice Provost Thad Seymour, UCF Downtown, in partnership with Valencia, will provide innovative education for highdemand fields, placing thousands of students within walking distance of jobs and internships and connecting highly skilled talent with industry needs, neighborhood synergies and new opportunities. Founding family. IN 1963, WHEN THE NEWLY CONCEIVED FLORIDA Technological University urgently needed land for a campus, 89 visionary Orlando residents put up nearly $1 million of their own resources to help acquire the 1,227 acres of scrub and cypress east of Alafaya Trail that would become today’s UCF. Among those 89 founders were Mary Jo and William Davis, who lived just across Alafaya and financed a land
exchange that was key to acquiring essential property and the right of way for the campus. “We realized how important having a university here would be for the region,” Mary Jo, now 98, says. Over the decades, the Davises — Mary Jo, Bill and their children — have remained steadfast friends to the university. Bill, who passed away in 1998, and Mary Jo both served in the 1970s as members of the UCF Foundation board of directors, and the family has given generously to a wide variety of areas. In 2016, the Davises made a new commitment to establish several endowed funds, including the William E. and Mary Jo Davis Lake Claire Recreation Area Endowment to support the operation of the recreation area. To honor the family’s extraordinary generosity to UCF, the recreation area at Lake Claire — where UCF students enjoy paddling, beach volleyball and a variety of other activities — was officially dedicated in their names during a January 2017 ceremony. “You have our deepest gratitude for all that you have done — and continue to do — to advance the great university that your family helped to establish,” UCF President John C. Hitt told the gathered family that morning.

Leadership and activism. IT STARTED WITH A REQUEST FOR TURKEYS. ALBION College student Marty Dupuis asked one of his professors, Mike Dively, if he’d consider helping students fund a local soup kitchen. Dively did, and a philanthropic partnership was born. Since 1983, Dupuis, associate dean of The Burnett Honors College, and Dively, a California-based philanthropist, have focused on two funding areas — cultural and environmental projects in St. Kitts and Nevis, and LGBTQ initiatives — through their foundation, the Mukti Fund. For Dupuis, who has called UCF his academic home for 12 years, creating a leadership scholarship for LGBTQ students was a must-do. “I wanted to create something important that had our names attached to it, to recognize our friendship and our philanthropic work together,” he
says, “and I wanted to do it at UCF.” The Dively-Dupuis LGBTQ Scholarship Endowment recognizes the importance of leadership and activism to achieve social justice for the LGBTQ community. Dupuis had long considered establishing a scholarship, but the Pulse tragedy helped fast-track its creation. “Pulse was a factor in looking at the need across the country, and certainly right here in Orlando,” he says. Dupuis hopes the scholarship brings new attention to the opportunities and challenges faced by the LGBTQ community. “The campus climate is strong, supportive and inclusive, and the university leadership works to make it even more so,” he says. “We can be proud of what UCF has accomplished.”

A BEACON OF HOPE FOR VETERANS SUFFERING from post-traumatic stress disorder, the UCF RESTORES clinic uses a uniquely intensive form of exposure therapy to achieve an incredible treatment success rate. With the help of virtual reality, clinicians recreate the specific sights, sounds and even smells that haunt each veteran until, eventually, they lose their destructive power. “After three weeks of treatment, 67 percent of veterans no longer have PTSD,” says Deborah Beidel, the UCF Pegasus Professor of psychology who leads the clinic. “And more importantly, at follow-up six months later, we haven’t seen them relapse.” That’s roughly five times the success rate reported by VA hospitals. Among the veterans helped by RESTORES is alumnus Josh Rosengren, who returned home after two tours in Iraq with not only physical wounds but also severe PTSD. “There were whole days he’d be outside in a sitting fetal position and he’d just rock back and forth,” says his father, Jim Rosengren, also an alumnus. Jim — a disabled veteran himself who began his 23-year Army career as a field medic and now serves as CEO of a healthcare company that serves more than 3 million veterans — knew his son wasn’t alone. So he and his wife Julia stepped forward with a $1 million commitment to establish an endowment that will support the clinic’s work. “We just need to be able to treat thousands and thousands more,” Rosengren says. “We can give these people their lives back and their families back.”

Powering ahead. FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, SIEMENS AND UCF HAVE partnered in a variety of ways to foster innovation, advance technology and develop the next generation’s engineering workforce. In 2016, that partnership took the form of an in-kind grant by Siemens of product lifecycle management (PLM) software with a commercial value of $68 million, as well as additional financial and in-kind support for a new Digital Grid Innovation Lab at UCF — the first of its kind in the U.S. The PLM software bundle — the same used by companies worldwide to help transform ideas into products — will be incorporated into student coursework and research related to computer-aided design, engineering simulation, industrial design, digital manufacturing and manufacturing management, especially in UCF’s Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research. Likewise, support from Siemens in the form of soft-
ware, hardware and expertise will help develop a Digital Grid Innovation Lab, strengthening UCF’s position as a national leader in modernizing and sustaining the nation’s power grid. In the new lab, research faculty and about 220 students per year will work with a range of advanced technologies, including real-time digital simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, power system protection and more. “We are proud to build upon our strong relationship with UCF, expanding cutting-edge research and bringing innovative solutions to the world from right here in Orlando,” said Steve Conner, President and CEO of Siemens Energy, Inc. “This partnership builds upon UCF’s strengths, and provides real-world experience on the same software and technology used by leading companies, preparing UCF students for rewarding STEM careers.”

Foundation for the future. Endowment gifts are vital to UCF’s pursuit of excellence, and growing the endowment pool is a key priority of the IGNITE Campaign. Because they are invested in perpetuity, such gifts represent a relatively stable source of funding that is largely unaffected by fluctuations in state support, tuition revenue and non-endowment giving. We salute the donors who established new endowed funds in Fiscal Year 2016 to benefit UCF and its students. Synergy’s Foundation for Those with Special Needs Endowed Scholarship This scholarship will provide an award to undergraduate students who are studying in the Department of Legal Studies. It is based on merit and financial need, and is meant to provide a potential pipeline for students pursuing a career in the legal field after graduation.

ReAnna Greene Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship This scholarship fund, created by Terry and Renee Greene and funded by many donors, honors the memory of their daughter ReAnna Greene, an alumna, former member of the Student Nurses’ Association, and trauma center nurse. The scholarship will be awarded to UCF nursing students who are also members of the SNA. Elizabeth Marie Howe Memorial Endowed Scholarship The late Linda Howe and the Howe Family established this scholarship fund, a memorial for their daughter who died shortly

after birth. Dr. Howe, who died in May 2016, was an associate professor in UCF’s College of Nursing. In her 30-year academic career, Howe mentored UCF Knight Nurses, served on the National League for Nursing Board of Governors, and created The Village, a unique approach to teaching pharmacology. The scholarship will be awarded to active members of the Student Nurses’ Association who express interest in neonatal intensive care. George Stegeman Memorial Endowed Scholarship In memory of George I. Stegeman, an icon in the area of nonlinear optics and UCF professor emeritus of optics, physics and ECE,
Swindling Family Pendulum Endowment Eileen L. Swindling ’88, UCF accounting graduate, and her husband, Stanley W. Swindling, created this endowment to help fund the maintenance of the Foucault pendulum located in UCF’s Mathematical Sciences Building, which Eileen remembers fondly from her days as a student. Any remaining funds may be used for maintenance of other exhibits and artwork in the College of Sciences.

Pollock-Ellsworth Endowed Award The Pollock-Ellsworth Award, founded by UCF political science professor Phillip H. Pollock III, annually honors the best thesis by a student pursuing a master’s degree in political science at UCF.
Shah Family Endowed M.D. Scholarship This scholarship fund, established by Dr. Ashish S. Shah, helps the College of Medicine recruit the best students possible by supporting full-time M.D. students who demonstrate financial need.

Prof. Walter Taylor Undergraduate Scholarship in Natural History UCF alumni Clay Scherer ’94 and Juliann Hickey ’95 created this scholarship to honor Scherer’s mentor, Walter K. Taylor, professor emeritus of biology. This scholarship encourages biology students to pursue their interests in natural history or field biology. Maribeth Ehasz and Richard Buhl First Generation Endowed Scholarship This scholarship, founded by Dr. Maribeth Ehasz, vice president of Student Development and Enrollment Services, and her husband, Richard Buhl, provides valuable support to UCF students who are the first in their families to attend college. Gene McDowell Endowed Football Scholarship Multiple donors established this scholarship to honor former football coach Gene McDowell. The scholarship will help cover the costs of tuition and education expenses for full-time student-athletes who participate in varsity football.

Balfour Beatty Construction Endowed Johnson Scholarship Balfour Beatty Construction established this fund to support the Johnson Scholarship Foundation’s goal of assisting talented and deserving students who are continuing their education at UCF after earning an associate degree from one of UCF’s partner colleges. The gift will be matched by the Johnson Scholarship Foundation. Brooke Dawkins Endowed Scholarship Fund Christopher J. and Laura Dawkins created this scholarship fund in memory of their daughter, Brooke, a UCF advertising student and member of the Kappa Delta sorority.
