DEAR FRIENDS AND LOVERS OF THE ARTS What an ARTS YEAR we have lined up for you! The Claire Trevor School of the Arts is UCI’s creative center, and this Guide is the key to opening the great experiences we’ll be presenting and sharing with you in art, dance, drama, and music during the 2017-2018 academic year. If you’ve been to the Trevor School before, you’ve seen and heard the incredible depth of talent, the breadth of imaginative creativity, and the innovative experiences we’ve brought you. If you’re new to CTSA, I promise you you’ll share the delight with which our gallery visitors and dance, drama, and music audiences uniformly respond to the first-rate work presented by CTSA faculty and students. Let me encourage you to push against your familiar boundaries of art appreciation this year. If you’re a “dance person,” try one of Drama’s awardwinning productions as well; if you’re a “music aficionado,” come to our remarkable Gilbert “Magu” Luján exhibition, part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions, during the fall; if you’re a “music theatre” person, try out one of our “21st Century Creativity” productions in the Experimental Media Performance Lab (xMPL). You’ll be surprised at the way the School is changing and evolving. By the time you read this introduction, new events, new associations, new connections will have been announced. Despite the fact that the Trevor School is a very large village, it’s bursting at the seams with new energies. Our six theatres (including the Barclay), concert hall, dance studios, three art galleries, motion-capture studio, sound design laboratory, and other specialized research laboratories for exploration of the arts are all hard at work to deepen your appreciation for the best in the arts. We’ve re-vamped our café (formerly the CyberA, now The Green Room) to make it an active part of our performing world—and a more inviting and comfortable place to read, have lunch or coffee, or listen to a jazz group. The Beall Center for Art + Technology is increasingly integrated into our departmental offerings and has become a campus hub for outreach to the off-campus community. We’ve re-made our relationship with the Irvine Barclay Theatre, adding a Distinguished Artist Series to the major productions of drama, dance, and music we bring to the community each year. As our relationship with the Barclay continues to deepen, we’ll be finding many new ways to interact with the local community and the regional arts scene. We’d love to know more about what you’d like to see (and hear) us doing. We’re launching a new set of membership opportunities (they’re in this book), to allow you to maximize your access to our events at the most reasonable prices—which are already remarkably affordable. In fact, we’ve repeatedly been called the best value for money in Orange County. Check out what we have to offer you here. You’ll be knocked out at the variety, the quality, the exciting possibilities. Be sure to let us know what you thought of your experience with us. And please join us as often as you can.

Best regards,

Stephen Barker Dean

As humans, we have long since been fascinated by birds. Their seemingly magical capacity for flight, song, and navigation have made them powerful symbols for many cultures, especially through the art historical lexicon. It Passes Like a Thought will explore flight, birdsong, and the aesthetic variation of avian species through the work of several intermedia artists.

To make a booking request, please visit beallcenter.uci.edu/ workshops-and-tours.

Free admission and docent-led tours, open to the public. Gallery Hours Monday - Saturday | 12– 6:00 p.m.

SCHMITT, YOU AND ME BY OMAR MISMAR Curated by Juli Carson

Mismar’s latest video installation, Schmitt, You and Me, frames an exchange the artist has in Skowhegan with a pair of gun shop owners. The exchange is that they give him gun lessons and in turn they read excerpts from Carl Schmitt’s 1932 text The Concept of the Political on camera from their shop. At times humorous, at others serious, Schmitt, You and Me breaks all stereotypes, providing a portal into the country’s current psycho-political conflict. DRAMA November 11 – 18, 2017

CHESS

Music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus; Lyrics by Tim Rice Directed by Robin Buck; Music Direction by Daniel Gary Busby

This iconic 80s musical develops the ancient game of chess into a metaphor for political and romantic intrigue. The loutish American Grandmaster, the earnest Russian Champion, the Hungarian-American chess second, and the discarded wife all vie for attention and dominance. Think Trump-Putin and their minions in a “reality TV-style” concert setting.
