MAURICIO GUZMAN The 2020-2021 Keith & Michelle Boothroyd LEADership Award Recipient I plan to use my innovative thinking skills to analyze the different market segments and use Porter’s Five Forces to have a competitive advantage. Furthermore, I eventually want to start my own nonprofit organization that helps students, teachers, professors, and minorities learn financial literacy topics through web courses, online webinars, lectures, and podcasts. My main focus will be to teach financial literacy all around the United States; especially in underrepresented communities that are in need of financial advice.

As a forth year student, I am at the stage in my life where I know what I want to be. First and foremost, my educational goals are to graduate from the University of California, Irvine as a Business Administration major with a minor in Informatics. Upon graduation, it is my goal to work for a financial firm as a financial advisor and help people become financially literate; especially those in lower income communities where there is a need for financial stability and education. I also hope to have an opportunity to work for a nonprofit organization that helps people with their financial education. I believe that knowledge adds value when you put it into practice, and after a few years of professional work experience, it is my goal to get my MBA at the University of Pennsylvania or Harvard University.

As a person from a low-income community and family, I did not know anything about financial planning growing up and my mindset was driven by living paycheck to paycheck. High school was very stressful because I would work to support my family, participate extracurricular activities, and take IB/AP classes. Every day I would run on four to five hours of sleep and follow my daily routine of school, participate in extracurricular activities, work, then assignments. I didn’t have time to invest in myself and develop my interpersonal skills. Something that high school didn’t teach was real life skills such as how to use Excel, different investment opportunities, taxes, and the variety of career choices that I could pursue. I started to realize the need for financial education once I graduated high school.

Once I gain experience as a financial planner, I want to start my own artificial intelligence company in the grocery market sector.

A LETTER OF APPRECIATION Dear Keith and Michelle, It is an honor and privilege to have been selected as the recipient of the The Keith and Michelle Boothroyd LEADership Award. Thank you for your generous contribution to assist in my academic endeavors, which has helped me overcome my financial barriers. As I complete my undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine, I am extremely blessed and thankful to receive such an amazing gift from you. I am a fourth year Business Administration major with a concentration in Finance and Marketing and minor in Informatics. My personal brand is perceived as networker, motivational advocate, diligent, and inventive. These words define my true passion in achieving my maximum potential in a professional and social environment. The reason I chose The Paul Merage School of Business was because of the network opportunities, alumni outreach, professors/chancellors, ambience, professional development, academic achievements, and amazing program for undergraduates. One thing I learned from the Merage School is that it is not about being the boss or CEO, it is about executing leadership and strategy in a digitally-driven world. During my time, it has been an honor to participate in many professional events, activities and clubs. Being the President of the Merage School LEADS program has instilled in me the value of being a leader, and life-long learner. My past has been tough, but coming from a household of humbleness and doses of love shaped me into the person I am today. I learned to value all things in life and live by my means of success and perseverance. Even though I am from a low-income community, I am proud of my roots and where I came from. Experience comes a long way and my destiny to success is helping fight the stigma of people like me that work really hard to earn their personal wisdom. I wish there was a word that meant much more than thank you because I am extremely grateful for your scholarship. Your generosity has inspired me to one day come back to the Merage School and give back to the community. Can’t wait to meet you and become long-lasting friends. Sincerely, Mauricio Guzman

ASHLEY CHEN ‘20 The 2019-2020 Keith and Michelle Boothroyd LEADership Award Recipient

communication with buyers, collaboration with Pricing & Estimating and Global Supply Chain, negotiation of funding with customers, acceptance and definitization of Purchase Orders, and closeout of contracts. I interpret and resolve contract issues by utilizing FAR/ DFARS to ensure compliance with government contract acquisition requirements, customer specifications, and company policy through the assessment of terms and conditions as well as negotiations for complex contracts. I hope to pursue an MBA in the near future to accelerate my career and education.

How did the Keith and Michelle Boothroyd LEADership Award change your career path? Before I received this award, I had already received a full-time offer from Northrop Grumman. The Keith and Michelle Boothroyd LEADership Award didn’t change my career path, but it changed my life path. After receiving this scholarship, I made it a life goal to give back to students like me. I want to live a life where I create my own opportunities and lead the way by giving back to my community in both time and money.

How did the Merage School help you achieve your goals? The Merage School provided many career and academic opportunities other colleges would not have been able to provide. I was able to graduate in three years while working multiple part-time jobs to pay for my tuition. This was made possible through dedication to my studies and mostly, because the Merage School’s ability to stack classes. One quarter, I took 20 units while working multiple part-time jobs because I was able to choose my schedule and attend classes two days of the week.

What path have you taken post-graduation? Upon graduation, I joined Northrop Grumman’s Pathway Rotation Program as a Business Management Analyst. I currently serve as a Contract Administrator in my first rotation where I am Captain of the F-35 Fighter Jet Production Repair Turnaround Time and lead the maintenance and organization of 210+ contracts through the release of essential forms,

My work experience propelled me to seek and receive better opportunities to advance in my career. The faculty at the School are also personable and helpful - I always felt like they had my back through every challenge. I am forever grateful for the friendly staff and professors at The Paul Merage School of Business who were always open to lending a hand when I needed it.

I never thought anyone paid attention to LEADS and what we were doing on campus for our peers. This award provided recognition to UC Irvine, the Merage School, LEADS, and to the President of this program. It showed that our hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed. I never could have imagined someone would believe in LEADS and believe in me so much that they were willing to donate such a large sum of money to support the program. The award is a reminder of how anything is possible and to dream big.

Tell us about your background before you became a student at the Merage School?

What opportunities are you most grateful for?

I am a first-generation college student from a Los Angeles suburb, Diamond Bar. Both of my parents are immigrants from Taiwan, and I learned the importance of hard work and perseverance from them. I grew up with two sisters: one older and one younger. I look up to my older sister and I make sure I set a good example for my younger sister. My passion for leadership, integrity, and customer satisfaction stem from my family’s background. Growing up, I watched my father build his small business from scratch on the backbone of global trade, entrepreneurship, and customer relations.

The opportunities I’m most grateful for aren’t the ones that were handed to me; they are the ones I created myself. Being a part of the inaugural cohort of LEADS, growing as a mentor, and serving as the two-time President of the program defined my college experience. I loved it so much, I’m now on the Steering Committee as an Alumni Representative. Joining LEADS and stepping up as a leader gave me the opportunity to connect with a variety of students, faculty, and staff. Not only did I get the chance to grow professionally through mentoring workshops and networking events, I also had the opportunity to help my peers develop highly valued soft skills including personal branding and communication. I’m grateful I can leave my legacy at UC Irvine - and more specifically, The Paul Merage School of Business - through student clubs and organizations. I’m grateful I was able to make an impact on my peers and future students. I can’t wait to continue watching LEADS grow into something even greater!

I always knew I wanted to study business and UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business was the perfect choice. UCI is close enough to my parents where I could go home every weekend and the surrounding community is thriving with businesses and companies. The campus is gorgeous and the students are lively and friendly. Choosing UC Irvine was the best and smartest choice I’ve made in my life. How has this award impacted your experience at the Merage School? When Keith and Michelle Boothroyd presented this award at a LEADS meeting, I was shocked. Grateful... but also confused and amazed.
