Introduction from Head of Access

UCL is committed to ensuring people have access to higher education regardless of their background.

We have been running outreach activities for over 30 years and we continue to launch new and innovative programmes and activities to welcome the brightest minds to UCL. I am delighted to tell you about the programmes and activities that we are running in 2018–19 for your students in Year 12. We offer a wide range of activities from Residential Summer Schools to one-off Masterclasses and Taster Days.

Applications are currently open for many of our Year 12 programmes for 2018–19. Full details about the activities that your students can apply for are detailed in this brochure.

We look forward to working with you this year to help your students achieve their best.

Free activities All activities run by UCL’s Access and Widening Participation Office are free of charge for UK state schools and students who meet our academic and demographic selection criteria (see eligibility on page four).

UCL’s widening participation activities are funded through our Access and Participation Plan commitments.

We also receive generous additional support from The Sutton Trust.

Eligibility criteria UCL’s widening participation activity aims to increase the numbers of students from underrepresented groups in higher education.

As such, we score students against our eligibility criteria (see below) in order for them to participate in our activities.

School Attend a non-selective state school; attend a school with low average attainment levels for GCSE or A Level.

Eligibility Criteria

Family background Do not have parents or carers who studied at university; have parents from non-professional occupations; are currently eligible for free school meals.

Neighbourhood Live in neighbourhoods with low overall progression rates to higher education and high levels of deprivation. (We use POLAR, IMD and Acorn data to assess this.)

Students must be attending a state school in the UK, and priority will be given to students who meet one or more of the following criteria. We also reserve 50% of places for male students, as they are currently underrepresented across our programmes.

Groups underrepresented in higher education —— Forced migrants; young carers; students estranged from their family; care-experienced students and disabled students.

—— Under-represented ethnic and gender groups (Black African and Black Caribbean students, White British students who meet our family background/neighbourhood criteria and students from Gypsy and Traveller communities).

Academic potential —— Must have achieved at least five A*–B grades at GCSE; —— Must be likely to achieve a minimum of ABB at A level or at least 34 points at IB (please note that for subject specific activity students must be on track to meet the degree programme’s minimum entry requirements); —— Must be taking at least two subjects from UCL’s list of preferred A Levels www.ucl.ac.uk/prospectivestudents/undergraduate/ application/requirements/ preferred-a-level-subjects 5

A new way to access UCL UCL runs a contextual admissions offer for students from under-represented groups.

Eligibility is based on the schools students have attended and their home postcode.

Access UCL – contextual admissions for eligible applicants All UK applicants are automatically assessed for Access UCL on application through UCAS. If a student is eligible and their application to UCL is successful, they will receive a standard UCL offer and an Access UCL offer which has lower grade requirements.

Subject Summer Schools UCL offers a wide range of academic subject summer schools both residential and non-residential to give Year 12 students a taste of university teaching and student life.

They provide a deeper insight into the subject area of choice with academic sessions led

by UCL academics and PhD students.

Subject Summer Schools

Participants will work in small groups, led by a student ambassador who will help with settling in, answer any questions students might have about university and provide a first-hand account of studying that subject.

Residential | Non-Residential Non-Residential Summer School participants must usually be from London, or be within commutable distance to campus.

We can pay for daily travel costs and we will provide lunch each day. We will also cover any costs associated with trips.

Residential Summer Schools Monday 22 July – Friday 26 July 2019 Monday 5 August – Friday 9 August 2019 Monday 19 August – Friday 23 August 2019 UCL Bloomsbury campus Residential | Non-Residential

The Residential Summer Schools are a great way to gain insight into university life as participants stay overnight in halls of residence from Monday to Friday.

These summer schools are attended by participants from across the UK and are designed to help build confidence and offer the chance to meet and work with people who each have different experiences.

During the day students attend academic sessions and a programme of social activities is organised for the evenings. In previous years, evening events have included theatre trips, London bus tours and trips on the London Eye. UCL provides all food and travel as well as costs for any organised activities.

Summer Challenge Summer Challenge is an academic study programme for Year 12 students. There are a variety of subject specific courses on offer in a range of STEM and humanities subjects, all taught by UCL academics and PhD students.

Discover UCL: A Summer School for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing Students The Discover UCL Summer School is a three-day residential programme exclusively for D/deaf and hard of hearing students in Year 11 and 12.

Two nights, summer 2019 UCL Bloomsbury campus Residential | Non-Residential Students are given the opportunity to stay in halls of residence for two nights, find out more about UCL and university life in general, meet current students who are D/deaf and hard of hearing and find out about the services and provisions offered at UCL. Evening activities are also arranged for students to take part in, which previously has included a visit to The Shard and bowling. The programme is run in collaboration with the UCL Deafness Cognition and Language Centre.

Applications for the 2019 summer school will open later in 2019.

Masterclasses Designed to help students decide what they would like to study at university, Masterclasses offer Year 12 students a taste of studying and learning at UCL. Morning or afternoon sessions (3hrs) Monday 8 April – Friday 12 April 2019 UCL Bloomsbury campus Residential | Non-Residential We offer a range of subjects to choose from including Linguistics, Science, Urban Planning and Law and the experience can provide an excellent example to use in a student’s personal statement.

The Masterclasses themselves are entertaining, handson sessions run by UCL academics and PhD students.

Students will have the opportunity to look around UCL, meet current UCL students and other like-minded young people.

UCL Choices UCL Choices is a series of one-day free events for Year 12 students, each focusing on different subject areas and introducing students to the wealth of options available for study at university.

As listed on website UCL Bloomsbury campus Residential | Non-Residential Your students can join us on UCL’s campus for taster lectures from academics and PhD students. They will also hear from graduates of our courses and current students on their experiences.

Students will also receive a subject specific tour of campus, highlighting UCL’s museums, galleries, labs and libraries. A free lunch will be provided.

UCL Choices

Visits to schools We welcome invitations to visit nonselective state schools based in Greater London. We can attend events or deliver a presentation or workshop.

Booking only, see below for contact Your school Residential | Non-Residential If you are a non-selective state school in Greater London, you can request UCL to visit your school to attend an event or deliver a presentation or workshop.

Where possible, we prefer to deliver sessions to your highly able or gifted and talented students.

For Year 12, we offer the following: —— Presentation by a member of UCL staff. Students who are planning to apply to competitive universities will find these presentations of most relevance.

The length of the session can vary to suit the time available, but will generally last between 25 and 45 minutes. Topics can include ‘Introduction to UCL’, ‘Applying to UCL’, ‘Choosing Your Course and University’ or ‘Personal Statement Workshops’.

Student Shadowing Scheme The Student Shadowing Scheme is an exciting opportunity for students to come into UCL and experience what life is really like as an undergraduate student.

One day, as arranged UCL Bloomsbury campus Residential | Non-Residential Students who attend will: —— Accompany a current undergraduate student to a lecture (and maybe a seminar/tutorial too) in a subject area that they are interested in —— Be taken on a tour of the UCL campus —— Be able to chat with a current student about life at university —— Receive information about wellbeing and/or financial support available while studying at UCL

Student Shadowing Scheme

This scheme is available to Year 12 students who attend a state school and who meet one or more of the following criteria: —— are a disabled student —— are a young carer —— are a forced migrant (e.g. refugee or asylum seeker) —— are estranged from parent(s) —— currently live or have lived in local authority care

Applications for Spring term 2019 shadowing days will close on Wednesday 16 January 2019.

Applications for 2019–20 will open in September 2019.
