ANDERSON Director of Track & Field and Cross Country 5th Season at UCLA

UCLA track and field alumnus Avery Anderson enters his fourth year as Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. As Director, Anderson oversees all aspects of the planning, development, and administration of the track and field and cross country programs at UCLA. He was named to the position on July 6, 2017 by UCLA Athletics.

Anderson deftly navigated COVID protocols throughout 2021 and led the Bruins to success in both Cross Country and Track & Field. The Bruin men and women both secured cross country team victories at the Arizona Invitational (Feb. 5) and Dave Murray Invitational (Feb. 19) ahead of the Pac-12 Championships. On the track, Anderson guided Ismail Turner to an NCAA Outdoor appearance after Turner went 45.64 (t-10th in UCLA history) at West Prelims. The women’s 4x400m relay team notched an historic performance at Outdoor Nationals, finishing third overall with a school-record time of 3:25.01. Alyssa Wilson qualified for Nationals in a pair of throwing events and went on to better her school record in the hammer while competing at U.S. Trials, as she posted a mark of 73.75m (241-11) for the fourth-best collegiate performance all-time in the event. Harrison Schrage earned USTFCCCA All-America honors after a sixth-place finish in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Ilaria Casarotto notched a new school record in the javelin, going 53.09m (174-02) to earn a podium spot at the Pac-12 Championships.

The 2021 UCLA women notched the No. 12 national ranking on the USTFCCCA poll, the highest ranking for the program since 2014.

Anderson’s third season as Director saw the 2020 outdoor campaign canceled due to COVID-19, but his men’s and women’s squads impressed in the indoor season. The Bruins set six indoor school records in 2020 – Christina Rice (5000m), Shae Anderson (400m – 2x), women’s 4x400m relay, Alyssa Wilson (weight throw), Kenroy Higgins II (60m). Anderson guided three individuals and a pair of relay squads to NCAA Indoor qualification before the Championships were, ultimately, canceled.

The UCLA women achieved a No. 15 national ranking ahead of the NCAA Indoor Championships, the highest indoor ranking for the program since 2015. The women’s squad tied for fifth at the MPSF Indoor Championships after finishing 13th in 2019.

The Bruins continued to improve in Anderson’s second year at the helm. The 2019 indoor season saw the UCLA men’s squad finish second overall, the team’s highest finish since 2010. Robert Brandt doubled with victories in the 3000m (school record 7:55.60) and 5000m while Sondre Guttormsen and Justin Stafford notched league titles in the pole vault and weight throw, respectively. Christina Rice (second place) and Ashlie Blake (third) led the Bruin women in the 5000m and shot put, respectively. Six Bruins went on to secure eight total All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Anderson went on to lead the UCLA men’s squad to a dominant 102-60 victory over USC in the annual crosstown dual meet. The Bruins’ steady improvement continued through the Pac-12 Championships, as the men’s team finished second with 140 points, the highest placement since the team finished second in 2005 and the most points since UCLA won the league title in 2004. Simon Litzell picked up his secondstraight Pac-12 title in the javelin while Brandt (10,000m) and Guttormsen (pole vault) each added their first-career league crowns, respectively. The UCLA women finished in eighth place with 55 points. Alyssa Wilson (discus) and Elleyse Garrett (pole vault) each picked up league titles.

Anderson would earn Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors for UCLA’s performances ahead of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Wilson won Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Year, the first Conference individual honor for the Bruins under Anderson’s direction. Anderson also earned USTFCCCA West Region Coach of the Year honors.

The Bruin men went on to finish 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as Sean Lee (first team), Dotun Ogundeji (first team), and Brandt (second team) eached earned All-America honors en route to 16 points total points. It was the team’s highest point total since notching 18 in 2013. Wilson qualified in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw at NCAAs, scoring 10 points on her own to give the Bruin women a T-25 finish.

She also earned First Team All-America status in each of her three events, becoming the first athlete to garner three First-Team accolades in the same meet since the First and Second teams were initiated in 2013.

In his first year at the helm, Anderson helped UCLA muster USTFCCCA All-America performances in several events during the outdoor season, including first team selections in Robert Brandt (10,000m), Kendall Gustafson (heptathlon), Jessie Maduka (triple jump) and Alyssa Wilson (shot put, hammer). The UCLA track & field program also saw two student-athletes (Simon Litzell, javelin; Marian Spannowsky, javelin) earn second team honors, while Justin Stafford (hammer) and Alyssa Wilson (discus) took home honorable mention plaudits in their respective events.

Anderson’s indoor All-Americans included: Ashlie Blake (first team, shot put), Jessie Maduka (first team, triple jump), Nate Esparza (second team, shot put), Dotun Ogundeji (second team, shot put) and Alyssa Wilson (second team, shot put).

During the 2018 outdoor track & field season, UCLA notched 26 Pac-12 All-Academic honorees, and the Bruins saw 24 student-athletes qualify for the NCAA West Regional Championships.

At the Pac-12 Championships, the Bruins collected an individual title in the women’s triple jump, as Jessie Maduka’s mark of 13.59m (44-7) gave the Bruins their first victory in the event since 2004. UCLA also saw Simon Litzell win a Pac-12 title in the javelin, as he threw a collegiate-best 74.46m (244-3).

Anderson returned to his alma mater after spending nearly 20 years coaching at the NCAA Division I level. His coaching career began at CSUN, where he served as a volunteer assistant track & field coach from 1999-2001 while competing as a professional decathlete. He served in the same role at UCLA from 2001-2002 and at Kansas State from 2002-2004 before returning to CSUN for the next 13 years working in various coaching roles. Most recently, he served as the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country for CSUN from 2011-2017.

In addition to his evident coaching expertise, Anderson returns to Westwood with the invaluable experience of being a two-sport student-athlete with the Bruins, as he competed in both football and track & field and understands the winning tradition of UCLA Athletics. He was a member of the NCAA runner-up 4x100m relay squad his senior season and helped UCLA take home four Pac-10 Championships. As a wide receiver from 1991-1995, Anderson competed in football for the Bruins at the highest level. His most notable season came when he helped lead UCLA to a 1993 Pac-10 title and later played in the 1994 Rose Bowl.

In addition to receiving a Bachelor of Arts in political science from UCLA, Anderson earned his Master’s of Public Administration with honors at CSUN. His advocacy for academic success was on display during his tenure at CSUN, as his program achieved a total of 12 NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards.

Anderson is married to the former Bridget Pearson, who is in her fourth season at UCLA as a volunteer assistant after coaching for 12 seasons at CSUN. She is also a UCLA track & field alumna. The couple have two children: a son, Andy, and daughter, Avery.

All-American steeplechaser Austin O’Neil begins his fifth season with the Bruins’ coaching staff and third year as an assistant, coaching the UCLA distance runners. O’Neil served as team co-captain for the UCLA track & field team in 2017 and was a volunteer assistant in 2018.

UCLA alumnus Devin Elizondo enters his fifth season with the Bruins as Assistant Coach – Distance for the Track & Field and Cross Country Programs.

Ahead of the 2021 Cross Country season, Elizondo helped sign a freshman class of eight elite distance runners from up and down the West Coast. Four freshman Bruins are from Northern California, three are local products from Southern California, and one arrives in Westwood from Portland. Ajani Salcido is an 8:46 two-miler who won each of his seven cross country races this past season. Elizondo also brought in Patrick Curulla and Audrey Allen, who both earned NCS XC victories in 2019. Three of the four women’s freshmen have already cracked the 5:00 barrier in the 1600m while Mia Kane from Portland owns a lifetime-best time of 4:38.92 in the 1500m.

Peter Herold etched his name in the UCLA record books after running 8:42.94 in the steeple at Pac-12s, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Elizondo also helped lead the Bruin women to a sweep of the distance events against USC, as Paige Carter (1500m), Emma Tavella (3000m), and Kira Loren (3000m steeplechase) picked up wins against the Trojans.

The 2019 cross country campaign produced the first USTFCCCA All-American in Elizondo’s tenure, as Christina Rice finished 37th at the NCAA Championships to earn the accolade.

It was the Bruins’ first female All-American since Ashley Caldwell in 2005.

O’Neil also helped guide the men’s DMR squad (Riley Kelly, Chris Morzenti, Arturo Sotomayor, and Ismail Turner) to NCAA Qualification and eventual USTFCCCA All-America accolades.

O’Neil’s first season as an assistant coach with the cross country staff saw him help guide three individuals to the 2019 NCAA Championships: Christina Rice, Colin Burke, and Garrett Reynolds. Rice earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for her 37th-place finish.

In the 2018 cross country season, Elizondo helped guide the women’s and men’s squads to fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the Pac-12 Championships. Erika Adler also qualified individually for the NCAA Championships. The 2019 track season saw Elizondo help coach Robert Brandt two three All-America honors (Indoor: 3000m, 5000m; Outdoor: 10,000m). He also helped guide the UCLA men’s and women’s squads to victories in the 1500m, 3000m, and 3000m steeplechase in the annual dual meet against USC.

Elizondo’s first season on the distance staff in 2017 saw the men’s cross country team finished third at the Pac-12 Championships, with Brandt leading the 8k through Split 6. The men’s squad went on to finish fifth at Regionals and qualify for the NCAA Championships.

During his senior season at UCLA, O’Neil posted the No. 6 mark in school history in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 8:44.86 to win the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival.

He also placed second at the Pac-12 Championships and was a NCAA Championship qualifier, placing 15th.

Elizondo previously served as head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach at UC Davis from 2014-2017. In his first cross country season at the helm, he led the Aggie women to their first Big West Conference title since 2011 and was named the conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.

In 2016, O’Neil earned Indoor All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the DMR.

Elizondo graduated from UCLA in 1998 with a degree in history and enjoyed great success as a distance runner for the Bruins. He was a member of three Pac-10 track & field championship teams and also helped lead the cross country team to a pair of third-place conference finishes. Elizondo was the UCLA cross country team’s Most Outstanding Freshman in 1994 and was selected to the All-District IX First Team in 1995.

BEAMER Volunteer Coach 6th Season at UCLA

Robert (Rob) Beamer enters his sixth season as a volunteer coach for the UCLA Cross Country and Track & Field programs, specializing in the distance events.

Beamer was on the distance staff that helped guide a young UCLA Cross Country program to a successful season in a shortened 2020 campaign. The Bruin men and women each earned team victories at the Arizona Invitational (Feb. 5) and Dave Murry Invitational (Feb. 19). Michael Mireles earned an individual victory at the Arizona Invite on his freshman debut with the Bruins. Beamer led six Bruin men to crack 3:50.00 in the 1500m, including Munir Kabbara, who ran 3:47.24 against USC to break the Lebanese national record in the event.

Peter Herold etched his name in the UCLA record books after running 8:42.94 in the steeple at Pac-12s, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Beamer also helped lead the Bruin women to a sweep of the distance events against USC, as Paige Carter (1500m), Emma Tavella (3000m), and Kira Loren (3000m steeplechase) picked up wins against the Trojans.

The 2019 cross country season saw Brandt (fifth), Garrett Reynolds (10th), and Colin Burke (11th) notch top-11 finishes at the Pac-12 Championships. Reynolds, Burke, and Christina Rice both qualified individually to compete at the NCAA Championships. Rice went on to earn USTFCCCA All-America honors with a 37th-place finish at Nationals.

Beamer helped coach Robert Brandt to three first-team All-America honors in the 2019 track season (Indoor: 3000m, 5000m; Outdoor: 10,000m). The UCLA men and women also swept victories in the 1500m, 3000m, and 3000m steeplechase against USC. The women’s cross country team continued to improve in Beamer’s third year on the staff, finishing fifth overall at the Pac-12 Championships, the team’s highest placement since a fifthplace finish in 2014. Beamer helped then-sophomore Erika Adler qualify individually for the NCAA Championships.The men’s team picked up five top-50 finishes at West Regionals in 2018.

Beamer’s second year on the distance coaching staff saw the Bruin men’s cross country team make its second-straight team appearance at Nationals, finishing 21st overall. The men’s squad secured fifth place at NCAA West Regionals following its second-straight third-place showing at the Pac-12 Championships. The women’s team finished 12th and eighth at Regionals and Conference, respectively.

In his first year on the cross country staff in 2016, Beamer helped the Bruins send both their men’s and women’s squads to the NCAA National Championships.

Prior to coming to UCLA, Beamer coached for two stints at UC Santa Barbara under head coach Pete Dolan. His most recent (2011-2015) saw him working with the throwers, sprinters and vaulters. In 2012, Beamer was part of a staff that coached the Gauchos to the highest point total in program history on the men’s side which earned a Big West conference title, with the women finishing as first runners up by a half point margin.

Athletes Beamer worked with at UCSB included NCAA championship qualifier and USATF 2015 heptathlon top finisher Barb Nwaba, who Beamer coached as a freshman (2007).

The Bruin men executed a sweep of the 8k competition, securing the 1-5 spots in the race. Michael Mireles earned the individual victory in his collegiate debut, crossing with a time of 25:15.3. UCLA Cross Country picked up its second-straight team sweep to start the season, earning victories on the men’s and women’s sides at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson. Peter Herold led the Bruin men with a fourthplace finish and a time of 24:42.3 on the 8k course.

Darius Riley followed closely in fifth place, crossing with a time of 24:44.3. UCLA’s scoring five was completed

by Michael Mireles (seventh), Anthony Stone (eighth), and Munir Kabbara (10th). The UCLA women pulled off a dramatic team victory by the slimmest of margins, scoring 59 points to pick up the win over Arizona (60 points) and the rest of the field. Emma Tavella was the Bruins’ top finisher on the 6k course, crossing in third place with a time of 21:44.9. Paige Carter (22:24.0) and Gwyn George (22:29.0) went 12-13, respectively.

Kira Loren and Sophie Scott battled to the line and went 15-16 to solidify the 59 points and earn the team victory for the Bruins.

The Bruins competed at the Pac-12 Championships in University Place, Wash., and came away with a fifth-place performance on the men’s side and a 10th-place team finish on the women’s side. Freshman Anthony Stone was the top runner for the Bruin men, finishing 28th overall on the 8k course with a time of 23:40.7. Peter Herold was 32nd at 23:50.1 while Jake Parker (37th) notched his highest team placement as the Bruins’ third runner on the day. UCLA’s scoring five was completed

by Darius Riley (38th) and Munir Kabbara (42nd). Senior Kira Loren was the No. 1 runner for the Bruin women in her final race for UCLA Cross Country. She finished 66th overall on the 6k course, just one spot ahead of Gwyn George, who took 67th with a 6k time of 21:41.0.

Annabelle Werner (21:54.5) scored for the Bruins for the first time this season while Ashley Johnson (80th) crossed as UCLA’s No. 4 runner in her postseason debut.

Claire Selleck rounded out the Bruins’ scoring five in 86th place, crossing with a time of 23:51.3.

Martin Jarmond Director of Athletics 2nd Year UNC Wilmington ‘01 Martin Jarmond, a nationally recognized leader in college athletics, has built an impressive track record of competitive excellence, innovative strategy and student athlete success. A two time recipient of Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 Award with more than 18 years in sports administration spanning three conferences, Jarmond is guiding UCLA to new heights through his culture of being ELITE – Energy, Leadership, Integrity, Toughness and Excellence. Martin’s results driven strategies combined with a relentless work ethic to elevate UCLA Athletics creates an exceptional experience for student-athletes and fans alike.

Jarmond was hired on May 19, 2020, as UCLA’s Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics, becoming the ninth athletic director in school history. Jarmond made an immediate impact on the Bruins, jumpstarting the Voting Matters Initiative, the first of its kind in the country which assisted student-athletes in discovering the tools needed to exact meaningful change through civic duty. Jarmond engineered a partnership between UCLA and Nike/Jordan, becoming only the fifth Jordan brand school in the nation and the first partnership with Nike in UCLA history. The six-year agreement between UCLA and Nike provides for 22 of the 25 UCLA varsity sports with Nike apparel, while football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball don Jordan. Jarmond exhibits a strong commitment to mental health awareness and his emphasis on diversity and inclusion was recognized in a 2021 SBJ award for being a national leader in diversity and inclusive hiring. In addition, Jarmond has UCLA primed to be one of the leaders in the burgeoning area of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) which will assist student-athletes in growing brand awareness and determining their earning potential. He was also recently named as the Pac-12 Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for 2021-22.

Comprehensive work by Jarmond and his staff throughout the pandemic, ensured all Bruin teams could compete safely during their 2020-21 seasons. UCLA teams captured four conference titles and the men’s water polo team brought national title No. 119 home to Westwood. The men’s basketball team embarked on a remarkable journey which led to an appearance in the 2021 NCAA Final Four and the program’s first national semifinal appearance since 2008. UCLA finished 13th nationally in the 2020-21 Learfield IMG College Director’s Cup. These athletic achievements were balanced by record numbers of student-athletes earning spots on the conference all-academic squads, with 49 individuals earning a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Winter Quarter, and 131 student-athletes earning their UCLA degrees. For the first time ever, the Bruins produced multiple winners of the NCAA Elite 90 Award. Four student-athletes were recognized by CoSIDA as Academic All-Americans.

Jarmond came to UCLA from Boston College, where he served as the school’s Director of Athletics for three years.

During his time there, he orchestrated the Eagles’ first-ever strategic plan, a comprehensive five-year goal to advance the program by fostering student-athlete formation, strengthening competitive excellence, increasing external engagement and enhancing facilities. The strategic plan was supported by BC’s first-ever athletics-only capital campaign, at the time, the largest campaign of any Atlantic Coast Conference institution at $150 million. Jarmond hired high-impact coaches in football, women’s basketball, softball, volleyball, swimming & diving, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and fencing. Jarmond served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and on the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.

Jarmond was also an assistant athletic director for development for seven years at Michigan State, where he served on the athletic director’s executive leadership team. He was a key member of the $1.2 billion “Campaign for MSU” development team and a liaison between Michigan State’s university development and alumni association leadership. Jarmond led the efforts to implement Scholarship Seating in football and Courtside seating in men’s basketball.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jarmond, 41, earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. A two-year captain of the men’s basketball team, he led his team to the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2000 and earned Colonial Athletic Association All-Academic honors in 2001. He holds both a M.B.A. and a master’s in sports administration from Ohio University. Jarmond is married to Dr. Jessica Jarmond, a dentist.

They have three daughters: Scarlett, Savannah and Serena.

Gavin Crew Associate Athletic Director 6th Year UCLA ‘99 Gavin Crew was named Associate Athletic Director for Sports and Administration in April 2016. He has spent over a decade with the Bruins, from 2001-2005 and 2008-present.

Crew oversees eight sports in his role - men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s track & field (indoor and outdoor), women’s track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving. Additionally, he supervises the Camps & Clinics office and serves as tournament director for NCAA, Pac-12 and MPSF Championship hosting.

In his first stint in the UCLA Athletics Department, he oversaw the expansion of the Camps & Clinics office to a year-round business operation, managing the growing demand for athletic camp operations in Westwood. From 2005-2008, Crew worked with Excel Sports Officiating to help train and work with officials, umpires and referees in all sports and at all levels. Upon his return to UCLA in 2008, Crew once again oversaw the camp office and added championship coordinator to his plate. In addition to continuing the growth of the camp operation into a $4 million revenue generator for the Athletic Department, he has also executed several major NCAA, Pac-12 and MPSF Championships on campus, including the 2013 NCAA National Collegiate Gymnastics Championship, 2013 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship, 2015 Pac-12 Track & Field Championship, 2014, 2016 and 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball 1st/2nd Rounds, 2015 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championships, and the 2016 NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championships.

Crew graduated with a degree in Political Science from UCLA in 1999.

Originally from Irvine, Calif., Crew lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood with his wife, Cassidy.

Prior to joining Boston College in 2017 and becoming the youngest athletic director of any Power Five institution at age 37, Jarmond previously served as deputy director of athletics at Ohio State, moving up the ranks after arriving as an associate athletic director for development in 2009. During his time at Ohio State, he was the lead administrator for a variety of sports, including football and men’s basketball, and directed external and internal relations and day-today operations. He also had responsibility for football scheduling, served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee, and was a member of the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Advisory Group and the Rose Bowl Advisory Committee. As Ohio State Athletics’ chief advancement officer, Jarmond helped raise more than $120 million between 2010-2012.

Dr. Gene Block Chancellor 14th Year Stanford ‘77 Dr. Gene Block became chancellor of UCLA in summer 2007, taking the helm of a world-class institution comprising 37,000 students and 27,000 faculty and staff, with an annual budget of $3.6 billion. As chief executive officer, he oversees all aspects of the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service.

Previously, Dr. Block served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia, where he also held the Alumni Council Thomas Jefferson Professorship in Biology. With academic expertise in biological clocks, he conducts research on the neurobiology of circadian rhythms in higher organisms, leading a research lab funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). From 1991 to 2002, he directed the National Science Foundation’s Science and Technology Center for Biological Timing. In 1997, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has invented a number of devices and holds a patent for a non-contact respiratory monitor for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Dr. Block joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1978 as an assistant professor of biology. He served as vice provost for research from 1993 to 1998 and then as vice president for research and public service until his appointment as vice president and provost in 2001. He also headed an NIH graduate training program aimed at increasing the number of scientists from underrepresented groups. In 1998, he received the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Outstanding Public Service Award for his work with Virginia’s business community.

A native of Monticello, N.Y., Dr. Block holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford, working with the late Colin Pittendrigh, “the father of biological timing” and distinguished biologist and former Stanford President, Donald Kennedy. Dr. Block and his wife, Carol, have two adult children.
