AVERY

ANDERSON Director of Track & Field and Cross Country 2nd Season at UCLA 8th Season overall

UCLA track and field alumnus Avery Anderson was named the new Director of Track and Field and Cross Country by UCLA Athletics on July 6, 2017. As Director, Anderson oversees all aspects of the planning, development, and administration of the track and field and cross country programs at UCLA. In his first year at the helm, he led the Bruins to a fifth-place finish on the men’s side and a 12th-place finish on the women’s side at the NCAA West Regionals in Seattle, Wash. The men went on finish 21st as a team at the NCAA Championships. Anderson returned to his alma mater after spending nearly 20 years coaching at the NCAA Division I level. His coaching career began at CSUN, where he served as a volunteer assistant track and field coach from 1999-2001 while competing as a professional decathlete. He served in the same role at UCLA from 2001-2002 and at Kansas State from 2002-2004 before returning to CSUN for the next 13 years working in various coaching roles. Most recently, he served as the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country for CSUN from 2011-2017. Anderson’s tenure with the Matadors was marked by staggering levels of success. During his time with CSUN, Anderson led his student-athletes to 13 Big West/WAC Conference Team Titles, 91 individual conference championships, and 21 NCAA All-America honors. He also coached the only individual male NCAA Division I champions in CSUN history, in any sport, long jumpers Dashalle Andrews and Reindell Cole.

Anderson went on to play for the Indianapolis Colts during the 1996-97 season. When a back injury ended his football career, he decided to return to track and field as a decathlete. He soon became a prominent decathlete as he set the CSUN complex decathlon record to qualify for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. After finishing seventh at trials, he went on to compete internationally for the United States in 2001 in the U.S. vs. Germany decathlon competition in Germany.

Additionally, Anderson presided over three Big West Outdoor Championships on the women’s side (2011, 2015, and 2017). The women’s victory in 2017 extended CSUN’s record for most conference team titles on either the men’s or women’s side. Anderson was recognized for his coaching prowess when he received the 2015 and 2017 Big West Conference Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year awards.

In addition to receiving a Bachelor of Arts in political science from UCLA, Anderson earned his Master’s of Public Administration with honors at CSUN. His advocacy for academic success was on display during his tenure at CSUN, as his program achieved a total of 12 NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards.

In addition to his evident coaching expertise,Anderson returns to Westwood with the invaluable experience of being a two-sport student-athlete with the Bruins, as he competed in both football and track and field and understands the winning tradition of UCLA Athletics. He was a member of the NCAA runner-up 4x100m relay squad his senior season and helped UCLA take home four Pac-10 Championships. As a wide receiver from 1991-1995, Anderson competed in football for the Bruins at the highest level. His most notable season came when he helped lead UCLA to a 1993 Pac-10 title and later played in the 1994 Rose Bowl.

Anderson is married to the former Bridget Pearson, who coaches the pole vaulters for CSUN and additionally assists with the multi events. She is also a UCLA track and field alumna. The couple have two children: a son, Andy, and daughter, Avery.

Director of Athletics 17th Year UCLA ‘74

Associate Athletic Director 3rd Year UCLA ‘99

Chancellor 11th Year Stanford ‘77

Sixteen years and 30 NCAA Championships later, Dan Guerrero’s mantra of ‘image and substance’ has clearly been established at a level that few others in his profession can approach. At the department’s helm when UCLA Athletics became the first to 100 NCAA team championships, the Bruins’ current total of 113 NCAA titles ranks tied for first in the nation. While UCLA teams have indeed won 27 NCAA championships since his appointment, another national leader, they have also finished second 29 times and have enjoyed an additional 123 TopFive finishes. In fact, more than 80% of UCLA teams have qualified for NCAA post-season competition since 2002. The program has also won 65 conference championships in 15 different sports, produced over 650 All-Americans and featured eight Honda Award winners, including the 2003-04 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. In his 15 years at UCLA, the Bruins have finished second four times and third four times in the race for the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. Guerrero was the first athletic director at the NCAA Division I level (FBS, FCS and NCAA Division I-AAA) to earn three NACDA Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year awards (2013-14 and 2006-07 at UCLA, 2001-02 at UC Irvine). In 2017, he was honored by the National Football Foundation with the John L. Toner Award, becoming the first-ever sitting athletics director from the West Coast to receive the honor. He was also selected as a finalist for the Athletic Director of the Year at the 2017 Sports Business Awards. UCLA’s academic success under Guerrero is equally noteworthy. Over nearly 15 years and 45 quarters, student-athletes have earned nearly 10,000 spots on the Director’s Honor Roll, including a record 341 during the 2017 fall quarter. UCLA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rates (APR) continue to remain high nation-wide. The UCLA student-athlete GSR is currently at 86%, and every Bruin team maintained multi-year APR rates of 950 or above, including six who achieved perfect scores of 1000.

Gavin Crew was named Associate Athletic Director for Sports and Administration in April 2016. He has spent over a decade with the Bruins, from 2001-2005 and 2008-present. Crew oversees eight sports in his role - men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s track & field (indoor and outdoor), women’s track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving. Additionally, he supervises the Camps & Clinics office and serves as tournament director for NCAA, Pac-12 and MPSF Championship hosting. Crew is a member of Athletic Director Dan Guerrero’s senior staff. In his first stint in the UCLA Athletics Department, he oversaw the expansion of the Camps & Clinics office to a year-round business operation, managing the growing demand for athletic camp operations in Westwood. From 2005-2008, Crew worked with Excel Sports Officiating to help train and work with officials, umpires and referees in all sports and at all levels. Upon his return to UCLA in 2008, Crew once again oversaw the camp office and added championship coordinator to his plate. In addition to continuing the growth of the camp operation into a $4 million revenue generator for the Athletic Department, he has also executed several major NCAA, Pac-12 and MPSF Championships on campus, including the 2013 NCAA National Collegiate Gymnastics Championship, 2013 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship, 2015 Pac-12 Track & Field Championship, 2014, 2016 and 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball 1st/2nd Rounds, 2015 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championships, and the 2016 NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championships. Nationally, Guerrero has extensive experience in committee work at both the NCAA and conference level. Currently, he serves on the NCAA Division I Council, the NCAA Council Coordination Committee, and is Chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the NABC, National Consortium for Academic and Sports, and the United States International Sports Federation. Resource development has been a core tenet of Guerrero’s tenure. Guerrero has secured major long-term apparel and rights-holder contracts with Under Armour and WME-IMG that, at the time of their signing, were the largest collegiate deals nationally in their respective areas. Guerrero came to UCLA from UC Irvine, where he had served as UCI’s fifth permanent Director of Athletics for 10 years (1992-2002), helping to elevate that program to unprecedented success. Prior to arriving at UCI, Guerrero worked at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he led that program to national prominence while serving as Athletic Director for five years (1988-92).
