The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). As a land grant institution, we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Congratulations, UCLA Class of 2021! It is my honor to join your family, friends, and the entire University of California community in celebrating you and your wonderful accomplishment. Amid historically challenging circumstances across the globe, you have worked hard, persisted, and persevered in pursuit of your UC education. I hope you will always take great pride in what you have achieved at the University of California, and in being a part of the UC family for life. This great university will always be a part of you, and UC will always be indelibly better for your time here as students. UCLA alumnus and American hero Jackie Robinson once put it this way: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” You leave UCLA with the knowledge, skills, and confidence you need to go out into the world and create your future — and to change our planet for the greater good of all. Your graduation is a milestone reflecting your resilience, your strength, and limitless hope for the future. The world faces unprecedented challenges. You are the leaders who will help heal what is wounded and right what is wrong. As you embark on this journey, know that you are ready. We are behind you, cheering you on, and wishing for ease, joy, and fulfillment in the path ahead of you. Go forth, Bruins, and make the world a better, brighter place. Fiat lux – let there be light!

FROM THE
CHANCELLOR
Congratulations, Class of 2021! Graduation is the culmination of many years of determination, diligence and hard work. I hope you are proud of all that you have accomplished, and that your time at UCLA has broadened your horizons, deepened your relationships, strengthened your skills and helped you grow as people. I also encourage you to take time to honor those who helped you on your journey and have been rooting for you from the start — your family, friends, mentors and peers. You are entering an era that needs your creativity, brilliance and passion. This pandemic has taught us important lessons about vulnerability and inequality, but also about service, empathy and community. As we recover from the pandemic, you are well-equipped to contribute to the creation of a more prepared, more resilient and more just society. At UCLA we affirm values of compassion and inclusion, careful research and thoughtful analysis, innovation and collaboration. Those are the very virtues that will serve you as you make your way through this challenging moment and beyond. This UCLA community you have been a part of, the community you helped create, and the broader alumni community you are now joining will be with you always. May they give you strength and inspiration. Congratulations once again. We can’t wait to see where you’ll go from here. Fiat lux,
Gene D. Block, PhD Chancellor University of California Los Angeles

FROM THE
DEAN
Dear UCLA Fielding School Class of 2021, I am honored to be with you on this momentous day and to offer my sincere congratulations on your graduation from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health! It is your dedication, ingenuity, resilience, and optimism that have made today possible. In the midst of a global pandemic you continued to learn, conduct research, and engage in fieldwork and advocacy. And your unwavering commitment to public health was on full display as you balanced your numerous academic and personal responsibilities with actively engaging in the fight against COVID-19. All the while, you found new ways to participate in and strengthen our school community. When I think of what is necessary for our global community to make it to the other side of COVID-19, what I know for certain is that we are more likely to reach our goal line because of you. Today marks the day that you formally join the generations of UCLA Fielding School of Public Health alumni who are leading and innovating public health here in Los Angeles and around the world. I am confident that you will envision and build bold solutions, and that every community you are a member of will be stronger, healthier, and more equitable because of you. I wish you good health, happiness, success, and boundless joy on your journey. Congratulations!

STUDENT PLEDGE
W We are graduating into a world with growing unrest, violence and a loss of discourse.
W We, as public health professionals, should not shy away from the difficult conversations.
W We cannot hope to address prevention without acknowledging the interconnected systems and policies that have led to the isolation and disempowerment of vulnerable populations.
W We must examine whether we are actually changing these systems to be more equitable or simply maintaining the status quo.
W We should now strive to put at the center of our work the voices of those most vulnerable.
W We should strive to empower communities, to place people over profits, to understand that our Earth is not a place with infinite resources.
W We must strive to create inclusive environments that honor our diversity.
W As the future continues to be uncertain, as we face unknown crises, we leave this university with the tools and experiences to be brave in raising our voices, in questioning the status quo, in breaking down silos, and building diverse, impactful, and just coalitions.
W This is our pledge. Originally by Cristina Valadez, MPH ‘19 Department of Environmental Health Sciences Edited by the PHSA Board 2020-2021 UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
