Rusty Bailey, a 1999 Master of Public Policy graduate, was elected Mayor of Riverside in November 2012. The native of California’s 12th-largest city used a door-todoor walking campaign to win over 58 percent of the votes, as some of his UCLA Luskin colleagues joined him on the campaign trail. A former intern to Public Policy Professor Michael Dukakis, a fellow at the White House, and a graduate of West Point, Bailey also served as a high school teacher. “Going door-to-door made the difference in connecting with the voters and informing me of the issues out there,” Bailey says about his campaign. “They appreciated that the candidate came out to the individuals, and I gained important local knowledge as well.”
