ou know that you have selected a special hideaway spot to stay as you cruise down California Highway One and view the untamed Pacific Ocean. You ascend up Highland Drive to the rugged cliffs overlooking the ocean for a breathtaking view and the best is yet to come. The Tickle Pink Inn is a one-of-a-kind hideaway tucked away in its own secluded cliff side. Established in 1956 it is owned and operated by the Gurries family. The 35-room, quaint and charming inn is nestled amidst pines and flowers. The inn is located on the former vacation estate of Senator and Mrs. Edward Tickle. Mrs. Tickle’s favorite color was pink, and she had a garden with many varieties of pink flowers, thus the name, Tickle Pink Inn. Pink geraniums, impatience, begonias and petunias are still grown on the grounds today. The Senator’s Cottage is located just 50 yards from the main building. It is the last remaining structure from the estate of the Senator. This private-entrance retreat offers an ocean view, two bedrooms, kitchenette, dining room, living room, fireplace and private patio. Tranquil colors of peach, rose, celadon, tobacco, terra cotta, soft teal green and gold are in different color combinations in the Old World Style rooms. The elegant rooms are large with private balconies and an enhancing view of the Monterey Peninsula coastline. Select rooms feature stone fireplaces and spa tubs. Large luxurious bathrooms and extra amenities, such as an outdoor hot tub, terrycloth robes, slippers, Pacific Dreams 10
bedding, fresh ground coffee service in your room, and a complimentary bottle of champagne upon arrival, are the perfect touches to this exquisite inn. The Terrace Board Room is a private meeting room for up to ten people. The rich, warm paneling, walnut board table and executive chairs lend a tranquil setting for any meeting. The Board Room provides all the essential business meeting materials and services, including overhead projectors, DVD, presentation board, coffee service and other services upon request. From 4:30 to 6 p.m., a complimentary Sunset Wine & Cheese Reception is held in the Terrace Lounge. Local California wines, fresh fruit and cheese are enjoyed by the guests while they view the gorgeous red sunset lowering into the Pacific Ocean. Carmel Mission, Mission San Carlos Borromeo Del Rio Carmelo, sits behind adobe walls in a quiet area of Carmel. Carmel Mission is considered one of the most beautiful missions in the chain of nine stretching along California’s Central Coast. The annual Carmel Art Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, and the Carmel Shakes-peare Festival are just a sampling of events presented by professional artists, actors and musicians from Carmel and around the world. The Sunset Community and Cultural Center, located on San Carlos Avenue between 8th and 10th, is the heart of Carmel’s cultural life. There is no Colton Hall admission charge. The park boasts swings, slides and a myriad of creative things to do to keep your children busy and happy for hours. CARMEL MISSION The historic Carmel Mission Basilica sits behind adobe walls in a quiet area of Carmel. Built in 1771, the Basilica reflects the beautiful architecture of early California. A representation of the tomb of its’ founder, Father Junipero Serra, is displayed in the museum building as are the monks’ living quarters which are preserved in their original décor and artifacts. Father Serra is buried at the foot of the altar in the Basilica. Tours are available, or you can walk the grounds at your leisure during operating hours. Salinas Valley ~ he Salinas Valley, one of the largest and most productive agricultural centers in the world, has long been known as the “Salad Bowl of the World.” Now, with the world-class National Steinbeck Center, dedicated to the work of native son John Steinbeck in full operation, Salinas has also commanded a prominent position in local tourism as the heart of “Steinbeck Country.”

History Small tribes of Native Americans made their home in the Salinas area for centuries before Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived to build a presidio at Monterey and missions at Carmel, Soledad, San Juan Bautista and the San Antonio Valley. Under Spanish rule, settlements developed around the Central Coast’s missions, but the valley remained largely undeveloped until Mexico overthrew its Spanish rulers and began granting lands in Alta California to Mexican families. Among the ranchos granted to settlers by the Mexican government after Mexico seceded from Spain in 1822 were Sausal and Nacional. Salinas City was born on adjoining parts of both of these ranchos after California had become part of the United States. During the early years of the Gold Rush, James Bryant Hill purchased Rancho Nacional and became a pioneer wheat grower. In 1854, he was named postmaster of the Salinas post office, although there was no town of that name yet. In 1867, Alberto Trescony, who had bought the inn from Howe, sold it and 160 acres to Alanson Riker and William Jackson. Forming a partnership with cattle rancher Eugene Sherwood, they laid out a city a half-mile square. Knowing the railroad’s importance in getting the agricultural products of the area to market, Sherwood offered Southern Pacific Railroad free acreage for right-of-
way and a depot, which opened in 1872. That was the year Salinas City became the Monterey County seat. Two years later it was incorporated as a charter city. As agricultural enterprise in the Salinas Valley moved from hides and tallow to grains, sugar beets and beans, and after World War I, to the “green gold” of lettuce, artichokes and broccoli, Salinas became one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the United States. The Boronda Adobe History Center, located in Salinas, is the headquarters of the Monterey County Historical Society. In addition to the oldest standing adobe in the Salinas Valley, a Queen Anne style house designed by area architect William H. Weeks and the Lagunita School that Steinbeck wrote about in his story “The Red Pony” are located on the property. Today Our comfortable climate, abundant natural resources and diverse population provide a solid economic and cultural environment that is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. The Salinas Valley is the focus of a number of unique attractions, annual events and historical landmarks. Each year, the California Rodeo Salinas ranks in the top 20 of nearly 800 North American rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Oldtown Salinas, located in the city’s center, is composed of beautifully designed buildings constructed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Things to Do & See GOLF The word is synonymous with the Monterey Peninsula area which boasts 14 courses including the worldfamous greens of Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, the exclusive Cypress Point Golf Club, and the new Poppy Hills. Beginners may want to try the gentle greens of the Old Del Monte, the Peninsula’s first golf course.

NATIONAL STEINBECK CENTER This museum and archive are dedicated to the life and works of Nobel prize-winning author John Steinbeck. The Center is located at One Main Street in the author’s hometown of Salinas, CA, a 20 minute drive from Monterey. Open everyday from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission charged. OLD FISHERMAN’S WHARF Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey was built in 1846 for the many trading vessels bringing goods from around Cape Horn. Today visitors seek out a bit of history and the finest fresh seafood meals served anywhere. While the focus may have changed, the wharf is still a working wharf. One of the many ways the old blends with the new is with whale watching and fishing trips. Visitors can enjoy a sightseeing cruise to view migrating whales or a fishing trip to bring back a limit of fish.
