Welcome... Something remarkable is occurring in the center of Milwaukee. Activity, excitement, and noteworthy changes are taking place at a pace that is unprecedented in this city’s modern history. Some of the change is obvious. Cranes loom above rising structures. Downtown buildings are sprucing up with colorful signs and artwork. The sidewalks are busier as more people are working, living, and enjoying a night out in downtown. Some change is less obvious as investors are buying real estate and city government is building and improving our infrastructure. And there are strong signs that the trend of more investment and more activity will continue. Northwestern Mutual is not just building two new skyscrapers; they are adding employees and constructing apartments. The Milwaukee Bucks are not just building a new arena; they are planning an exciting new district that adds more retail and entertainment venues. I am optimistic about Milwaukee’s future and the increasing opportunities for our residents and our visitors.
Don’t let freezing temperatures, snow and ice keep you from celebrating the start of 2016. Milwaukee County offers countless fun, family-friendly opportunities, regardless of winter weather. Enjoy snowman-building, sledding or tobogganing at one of our award-winning parks, or ice skate at Red Arrow Park. More relaxing options include a stroll through Cathedral Square or a carriage ride downtown. Indoors, visit art galleries in the Historic Third Ward, enjoy a concert at the Marcus Center for The Performing Arts or take in a play at one of our great theaters. No matter what you choose to do, I hope you enjoy your time with us.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Technology brings alive Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit The Milwaukee Public Museum’s Streets of Old Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s most popular exhibit, reopened in December 2015 after a major renovation added new sights, sounds and scents to increase its appeal to contemporary viewers. This walk-through portrait of Milwaukee in the late 19th century gives visitors the magical experience of going back in time. Opened in 1965, it has been expanded over the years, but the project begun last August was the first major renovation. “Most exhibits showcase history,” explains Dennis Kois, president and CEO of the 06 keymilwaukee.com
internationally recognized museum. “We’re very excited to implement changes that enhance not only the Streets themselves, but deliver the kind of visitor experience contemporary museum-goers expect.” In what the museum calls a “re-imagination” of the Streets, visitors enter via a new lifesized streetcar that rumbles down tracks and appears (through a clever use of technology) to travel back in time. While viewing new storefronts and businesses, visitors can
drop in on conversations between Streets residents and engage in hands-on activities. “Milwaukee has a history of building world-class, innovative exhibits,” explains exhibit director Julian Jackson. “We’re building on the shoulders of giants here. Carl Akeley created the very first habitat-style diorama here in 1899. The Indian Crow Bison Hunt was the largest open diorama in the world when it opened in November 1966. The re-imagination of Streets builds upon that level of quality.” A new app enhances the Streets experience. Smartphone users can download the free Streets of Old Milwaukee app and pick a Streets resident to be their tour guide. The app uses innovative technology to transmit where the visitor is in the exhibit, allowing the tour guide to give the visitor specific information. Guides highlight important issues of the day based on a theme, with themes and guides changing twice a year. With the current theme of “entertainment,” visitors learn through a cakewalk dancer, socialite or vaudevillian. Visitors can listen to their guide via their phones through ear buds or read the tour on their smartphone screens. For additional information, visit www.mpm.edu.

50th year for KEY Milwaukee T
his year KEY Milwaukee is 50 years young. Still the primary print resource for visitors, KEY today is part of the “new media,” bringing the area’s dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities to readers in ways that could not be imagined half a century ago. The KEY trademark was introduced in Los Angeles during the 1930s. In 1967 when the KEY network of digest-sized, locally owned
visitor guides was formalized, an existing Milwaukee visitor guide was renamed KEY Milwaukee and the publication became a founding member of the KEY Magazine Group. In the 1990s, KEY Milwaukee’s platform grew significantly with the introduction of KeyMilwaukee.com. Today, social media adds thousands of interactions daily and the Keyzine newsletter updates a loyal following throughout the Upper Midwest. KeyMilwaukee.com is now fully optimized
for smart phones, as is the entire magazine in digital form at KeyMilwaukeeMobile.com. “We’re confident that the best is yet to come,” says Beth Stafford, owner of KEY Milwaukee for the last 22 years. This year associate publisher Laure Leplae-Arthur becomes publisher in advance of acquiring the company. A Glendale resident and experienced graphic designer, Ms. Leplae-Arthur in 2015 helped redesign the publication, website and mobile products.

Prosit, salud, santé, cheers! From traditional Milwaukee favorites like Miller, Schlitz, and Pabst to local and regional micro and craft beers, Milwaukee is home to some of the most unique brews... MILWA UK EE B EER GUIDE
LARGE BREWERS
As classified by the Brewers Association, large brewers produce more than 6 million barrels annually.
MillerCoors preserves Milwaukee’s brewing legacy with one of the world’s largest breweries located on land originally purchased by Frederick Miller, who founded Miller Brewing in 1855. MillerCoors also brews for Pabst and Schlitz, two historic Milwaukee brands.*
REGIONAL BREWERS
Brewers that produce between 15,000 barrels and 6 million are classified as regional.
Sprecher Brewery Lakefront Brewery These two standout brewers led the craft beer movement in Metro Milwaukee. Sprecher was the area’s first micro brewer and now produces a broad menu of beers, including seasonal specialties as well as custom beers.*
MICRO BREWERS
These brewers produce less than 15,000 barrels annually and meet set limitations on techniques and ingredients.
Milwaukee Brewing Co. This growing micro brewer even produces beer infused with tea from Milwaukee’s Rishi Tea. O-Gii is brewed with green and chamomile teas, and Hop Freak marries citrusy hops with jasmine Tea.*
BREW PUBS
Brewpubs connect the atmosphere of a neighborhood bar with a farm-to table category of beverage.
Water St. Brewery Rock Bottom Brewery Milwaukee Ale House Horny Goat Hideaway Water Street Brewery, which opened in 1987, owns the title of being Milwaukee’s oldest brewpub.
