ith little money, the German’s of Cincinnati added steel cut or pin head oats to their sausage along with salt, pepper, bay leaves, rosemary and thyme creating the local favorite of Goetta. Growing popularity around the country, Glier’s Goetta has only been available to the Cincinnati area…UNTIL NOW. To accommodate our Brat, Mett and Goetta lovers around the country, Glier’s can now be shipped ANYWHERE throughout the USA and makes the perfect gift this holiday season.

Cincinnati

The Queen City

by Michele Roth

C

incinnati, also known as the Queen City, is a city rich in history and culture with exceptional visual and creative arts, professional sports teams and top notch museums. Whether you are a resident or a visitor there is always something to learn, see and do in Cincinnati and our neighboring cities of Covington and Newport. For those reasons and many more, it’s no surprise that in 2012 Lonely Planet Travel Guide named Cincinnati number three of the top ten travel destinations in the United States. Cincinnati offers all the benefits of larger cities like Chicago and New York while maintaining the small hometown hospitality. In this section we like to bring interesting facts and opinions. This is what we have for you in this month’s issue:

What Do You Remember?

This holiday season when crossing items off your gift list, we thought it might be fun to reminisce. Here is a collection of pictures kindly shared with us by cincinnativiews.net of various department stores Cincinnati consumers once relied on for their holiday shopping.

Mabley & Carew Mabley and Carew were located where Fountain Square is today. The Department store opened in 1881 and closed in 1930.

“The city is indeed, justly styled the Queen of the West: distinguished for order, enterprise, public spirit, and liberality, she stands the wonder of an admiring world.” - B. Cooke, The Inquisitor and Cincinnati Advertiser, 1819

H. S. Pogue Company The flagship store of Henry and Samuel Pogue was located at 4th and Race where the Tower Place Mall stands today and was well known for their elaborate Christmas displays.

The McAlpin After The Shillito Company moved in 1877 from its West 4th location McAlpin, Polk & Company moved in and even expanded into the Mitchell Furniture building and again with the Aeolian Pianos building.

Rollman’s Department Store Rollman’s Department Store also located at 5th and Vine opened in 1867 on the site of the Havlin Hotel.

Alms & Doepke Company

The Shillito Company The John Shillito Co. opened in 1830 on West 4th until a larger building was required so a new store was built at 7th and Race.

The Alms & Doepke Department Store was located on Central Parkway on the edge of downtown in Over-the-Rhine. They closed in 1955, the building is now on the National Register of Historic Places and owned by Hamilton County. All pictures used with permission from www.cincinnatiview.net. he 2013-14 Season marks the 50th Anniversary of Cincinnati Ballet and the 1963 milestone of when the first auditions were held. Today, Cincinnati Ballet is recognized as one of the country’s leading midrange ballet companies and under the creative direction of Victoria Morgan, continues to bring new and historic performances which captivate audiences including the whimsical production of Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker. “Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker is simply spectacular, with vivid colors and whimsical design, quick-moving action, KEY CINCINNATI DECEMBER 2013

and lively, entertaining, even surprising, moments,” shares Artistic Director and CEO Victoria Morgan. Frisch’s has been the title sponsor of Cincinnati Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” since 1974 and since its inception, that same year, more than a million people have seen Frisch’s Presents the Nutcracker. “In the program for that first production, though, the company noted the “specific and extraordinary support” of Frisch’s Restaurants, Inc. Frisch’s not only championed that first production, but it has supported every subsequent one since. Indeed, Cincinnati Ballet’s production is now known as Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker,” writes author David

Holiday Tradition

Lyman in the book Cincinnati Ballet Celebrates 50. This season’s production includes 150 kid’s roles, 200 costumes, 20 elaborate sets and 15 scenes as well as the return of celebrated dance power couple, Adiarys Almeida and Joseph Gatti, former principal dancers of Cincinnati Ballet and most recently of Boston Ballet as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cotton Candy Cavalier, and as the Snow King and Snow Queen for select performances. Victoria Morgan also shares, “I am so looking forward to working with Adiarys and Joseph again. They are a dynamic, talented and high energy couple on stage and off.”

50 Years

Live instrumentation by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra of the 50th Anniversary Season production of Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker will have children mesmerized and adults will once again have Sugar Plum fairies dancing in their heads.

Act I

Scene 1 Blanche’s Kitchen There is a flurry of Christmas Eve activity as the maids, butlers and chef prepare for a Christmas Eve party where friends and family of the Stahlbaum’s will gather to open presents and celebrate the holiday. The Stahlbaum’s son Fritz and their daughter Clara try their best to be helpful, but that is not without its complications. Cover Feature continued on page KEY CINCINNATI DECEMBER 201312...

Scene 2 The Party

Everyone’s having a marvelous time dancing, laughing and opening gifts. Suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer, the mysterious doll maker, bursts in and surprises all with unexpected acts of magic like the appearance of a beautiful doll that Clara wants for Christmas. Mother Stahlbaum denies her the doll and Clara is sad until Herr Drosselmeyer gives her an adorable Nutcracker. She dances around the room showing off her splendid gift and a jealous Fritz grabs it from Clara and breaks it. Herr Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and mends the Nutcracker. As the festivities come to an end everyone goes off to bed.

Scene 3 The Battle

Clara sneaks down to check on her beloved Nutcracker and as the grandfather clock strikes midnight mischievous mice try to steal her precious Nutcracker. Drosselmeyer appears and the mice scurry as the tree, parlor furniture and toys begin to grow. A battle ensues between the mice and toy soldiers. The Mouse King appears and the Nutcracker, having escaped the mice, has grown to life-size and challenges the Mouse King to a duel. It is a fierce fight but the Mouse King is distracted by Clara’s imaginary friend, Minnie, the poodle, allowing the Nutcracker to wound his foe. The mice scamper away and Clara sees her Nutcracker transform into a handsome prince. They then journey to the magical snow forest where they meet the Snow Queen & King. A beautiful flying ornament descends to take Clara and her Nutcracker Prince to the Land of Sweets.

her. She graces them with a special dance when an enormous flying ornament appears carrying Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them to the kingdom and Clara is reunited with Minnie, her poodle, and together they recount the fierce battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The entire kingdom cheers as the Nutcracker reenacts his victory. Each character honors them with a special dance. As the celebration continues, the Land of Sweets transforms before their eyes into a beautiful garden full of flowers with flowing petals and one brilliant pink rose. Finally, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cotton Candy Cavalier do a grand dance as a special treat for Clara. All the characters join together for a rousing finale. As their dancing concludes, the flying ornament descends to take Clara and her Prince away from the Land of Sweets. Clara opens her eyes and she finds herself at home in the parlor room with Minnie by her side and her beloved Nutcracker watching over her, always. an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and Scuba Santa® has been called one of the most unusual holiday experiences in America. Experience the joy of this annual family holiday tradition and celebrate ten years with Scuba Santa and all his friends.

“From introducing the first Shark Ray on display in the Western Hemisphere, to exhibiting “Mighty Mike” – the biggest and baddest American Alligator outside of Florida, Scuba Santa’s generous gift of two rare white alligators is just another example of Newport Aquarium providing our guests with ‘more new to see and do,’” said Lynn Margason, Marketing Director.
