Haleakala fast facts GEOPHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Haleakala, means “House of the Sun,” and is a geological, biological, and geographical wonder encompassing a variety of microcosmic environments. As earth’s largest dormant volcano, it rises over 10,000 feet, measuring 3,000 feet deep with a 21-mile circumference.

VISITOR CENTERS The Haleakala Visitor Center is situated near the summit (Map H), 10 miles from the park entrance. Open sunrise-3 p.m. daily, it has interpretive exhibits and restrooms. For info call 808572-4400. The Kipahulu area of the park (Map I:B18) can only be accessed via the road to Hana (Map I). The Kipahulu Visitor Center has daily orientations and is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. For info call 808-248-7375.

HAWAIIAN MYTHOLOGY Ancient Hawaiian chants tell of the Demigod Maui who lassoed La (the sun) atop Haleakala, where La rested nightly after traveling across the sky by day. Maui’s efforts created longer days so that his mother’s kapa (tree bark fabric) would completely dry. THIS WEEK MAUI

Scientists estimate that about 4,000-5,000 whales—twothirds of the whole North Pacific population—migrate here annually. While summers in Alaska are devoted to feeding, their winters in Hawai‘i are focused on reproduction. The state is considered the nation’s primary mating and calving area. In particular, the warm, shallow waters off Maui’s south and western shores are conducive to the young calves’ survival. According to research findings, the first groups of whales to arrive are usually mothers with their calves from the previous year, or “yearlings.” Sexually immature whales (under the age of five) arrive next, followed by mature males, mature mating females and finally, pregnant females or mothers with newborns.

Observing whale behaviors The fun of whale watching is understanding their behavioral patterns. Watch for tail slaps, in which whales slap their flukes against the water’s surface in either a normal or inverted position. A breach is a whale leaping out of water with about 40 percent of its body exposed. Males are also known for “singing” some of the longest and most complex sounds of the animal kingdom. Learn about more behaviors and facts from the marine biologists or naturalists on board a whale watch excursion.

Humpback whale talks The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary provide a free “45 Ton Whale Talk” to visitors. They start 11 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the Sanctuary Learning Center, 726 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei (Map F:E7). For more info call 808-879-2818 or visit their website: hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov. ‘IAO valley

In 1790, a fierce battle was waged between the forces of Kamehameha I and Maui’s King Kahekili, as Kamehameha vanquished his opponent. Over time, the traces of ancient warfare have been softened by a lush green carpet of foliage. ‘Iao Needle is a natural basaltic stone formation, a volcanic remnant of the West Maui Mountains. It rises 2,250 feet above sea level. In ancient times it was used as a natural altar by the Hawaiians and is still considered a sacred place. The word ‘Iao means “cloud supreme,” aptly describing the cloudy mist that frequently shrouds the mountain tops. While at ‘Iao Valley State Park, stop by Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens, which feature landscaped cultural pavilions. Picnic tables and restroom facilities are available. Park hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. with a nominal parking fee. THIS WEEK MAUI

It was formed by two volcanoes connected by an isthmus, a flat low lying land area. The West Maui Mountains dominate the smaller land mass, while Haleakala, at 10,023 feet above sea level, clearly dominates the eastern region. Since Maui elevations range from sea level to tall mountain tops, you’ll also find many climate zones. Before heading out for the day, keep that in mind when deciding what to wear.

Frequently, the treasured prize isn’t in what lies at the end of a journey as much as it is in the journey itself. The Hana Highway is one of 52 Millennium Legacy Trails in the United States, which were established to protect the nation’s historic roads and trails. The two-lane winding Hana Highway requires caution to navigate its 617 turns and 56 onelane bridges. You’ll want to get started early with a full tank of gas and a “Hana box lunch” since there aren’t any restaurants or gas stations along the road. Aside from a variety of grasses—including the thick blades of Kukuya—you’ll face the balmy but distracting trade winds. One of the suggestions from Mark Rolfing, NBC Golf Channel analyst, includes widening your stance slightly so you’re firmly planted in place, enabling you to maintain good balance in the wind. Keeping steady and in control when you swing is the key.

Harness the Waves Riding a longboard is probably the best way to learn how to surf. The greater surface area, along with its thickness and width, provide a stable foundation on which to stay standing. It’s a thrilling experience; once you try it, you’ll want to keep going. Of course, body or boogie boarding are favorite past times. Riding waves on four-foot boards in a reclining or kneeling position is popular with local youth. Another popular variation is stand-up paddle surfing (SUP). It provides a full body workout that engages the core area.

Cruise Control with a Captain Taking in the expansive coastline views on a sunset or dinner cruise is the perfect way to spend time with your favorite partner. Others may prefer to seek an adventure to hunt trophy catch, while some are curious to see underwater life without getting wet!

Immersed in the Sea Imagine swimming among jewel-tone tropical fish and other marine inhabitants. On Maui, snorkeling and Molokini go hand-inhand. This crescent-shaped islet is two-and-a-half miles off Maui’s coast and a designated State Marine Life Conservation District. It has been voted one of the world’s top 10 favorite snorkel and dive spots and offers excellent viewing at depths of 100 feet.

Arrival of the Humpback Whales The annual migration of humpback whales to the warm waters of Maui peaks from January to April. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, about 10,000 humpback whales visit Hawai’i each year. These endangered marine mammals are protected by federal law. Viewing guidelines mandate keeping a safe distance from humpback whales in Hawai‘i; the law prohibits getting closer than 100 yards (about the length of a football field) when in the water. Don’t try to chase, swim with or touch the whales and other marine life. Do go on a whale watching excursion to observe these magnificent mammals from a safe distance. Activity providers have a marine naturalist or biologist on-board their boats, providing information and guidance about watching whale behavior.

model of a whaling ship are displayed here. Don’t miss the prized collection of 19th century scrimshaw! Scrimshaw is an American folk art originating from the whalers of the 19th century. Sailors scribed whale bone and teeth with various designs using a jack knife or sail needle to make deep or fine lines, while a pointed nail was employed for outlines and a small chisel for inlay. For contrast, sailors rubbed or traced india ink, lamp black or soot into the surface. When visiting the museum, you’ll find a self-guided audio tour, available in four different languages and can watch short videos throughout the day. The museum is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, with free admission. For more info, call 808-661-5992. Rejuvenate

on Maui

The tropical life offers the quintessential mode of “letting go,” something easily attained on the beaches of Maui. But consider alternate ways to rejuvenating spirit, mind and body. For example, you’ll find many fine resort spas dotting the island. There are also small establishments offering wellness treatments. Some of the options available include ancient Hawaiian healing methods, the use of medicinal plants, hot smooth stones (wela pohaku), touch techniques like lomi lomi massage or a healing session with a Kahuna (teacher). Whatever wellness treatment you select, be sure to discuss your preferences before booking the appointment.
