Dale Chihuly’s Works of Art From weaving glass in tapestries to being one of the most prolific contemporary glass artists today, Dale Chihuly leaves a beautiful trail through the Las Vegas Valley.

His career spans decades and his chosen medium has taken him and his art around the globe.

Chihuly has just released his latest book titled, “Chihuly Silvered,” and it is a simply fantastic addition to his catalog of printed work. The book is something of a piece of art in itself, with the artist choosing approximately 125 or so of his favorite pieces to feature. “There are a lot of bright and colorful ones,” said Chihuly, “and there are some that are just white that aren’t so colorful.”

The process of “silvering” glass is the same as mirror making. “It’s something I tried and I really liked it, so I’ve been

putting a lot of energy towards silvering pieces,” said Chihuly. He began working with the process after he had studied in Italy under master glass blowers when he was a young artist.

“What I like most about glass is that light goes through it,” said Chihuly. “It’s different than any other material in that way…The idea that sunlight or artificial light can go through it is what makes it luminous in a way that no other material is.”

Chihuly creates pieces that range in scale from something to fit on a shelf to grandiose installations using materials ranging from glass to ice to even incorporating neon into his work. He creative ideas have taken him all over and his work can be seen in Vegas in the lobby ceiling of the Bellagio, and at his gallery in City Center at Crystals Place.

Ways Vegas Has Spoiled Us All

Here’s today’s revelation: Las Vegas has spoiled us all. Each time you think the bar’s been raised as high as it can go, Sin City raises it again, and seriously, we’re spoiled.

Here’s how.

1. Vegas is a 24/7 town. It’s amazing how quickly you can get used to those hours.

Any time, day or night, you’re likely to find your favorite casino, restaurant or hot spot open for business.

2. Unbelievable restaurants. Every celebrity chef in the world has a Vegas restaurant. With the best ingredients, the greatest variety of cuisines and prices, no appetite is too big for Las Vegas.

3. Free valet parking. Visit another city and see how quickly the cost of simply parking adds up!

4. Drinking on the sidewalk. Few places in America allow you to purchase alcohol and walk down the street carrying an open container. In Vegas, the party’s portable.

5. Free liquor. Speaking of alcohol, when you’re gambling, much of the liquor served in casinos is free. Spoiled!

6. Spectacle. Things in Vegas happen on a grand scale. The dancing fountains at Bellagio, the tallest freestanding observation tower in the U.S. (the

Stratosphere), fireworks launched from multiple hotel towers on holidays. In Vegas, it’s go big or go home.

7. The weather. Sure, Vegas can get toasty in the summer, but compared to snow storms and torrential rain, Las Vegas weather is picture perfect (the city averages 294 sunny days per year).

8. Weird things to do. In Las Vegas, you can visit the Zombie Apocalypse store, operate a bulldozer, fire a machine gun, visit the Pinball Hall of Fame and take a Stripper 101 class, and you’re just getting started.

9. Eye candy. From showgirls to the guys at Chippendales, to bartenders and buskers, Las Vegas is filled with gorgeous people. Just one of the things that makes it so difficult to leave.

10. Unlimited Cirque. Many towns don’t even have one Cirque du Soleil show. Vegas has an endless supply.

11. Views. They take our breath away and put other skylines to shame. Sorry, other cities, the truth hurts.

12. Loyalty club perks and comps. Casino players club cards are so common, many take them, and the perks they provide, for granted.

13. Everybody performs in Vegas eventually. The biggest names in entertainment end up on the stages of Las Vegas, for one-offs or residencies.

14. It’s the service. Las Vegas is a service-oriented town, and once you’ve experienced what it’s like to be pampered, including friendliness and promptness, it’s rough returning to the real world.

15. Free money. When people go to Disneyland, do they ever gripe about leaving with less money than they brought?

As the lights dim, and the audience begins to quiet down the show starts with a voice over the loudspeaker introducing everyone to what the evening will entail, bringing the first act on stage. Country Superstars consists of a variety of performers and you will have the chance to see them in all their glory.

There isn’t a bad seat in the house, and as the lights come up and the

energy starts to emit from the stage you know that you’ll be in for a treat.

On the night of this particular show, “Tim McGraw” kicks everything off with his cowboy cut voice and really gets the crowd excited. Singing hits like, “I like it, I love it, I want some more of it,” the McGraw impersonator makes a great first impression on the crowd of country music fans. Today: What “Vegas Tradition” haven’t you done yet? Jonathan: I have yet to take the photo in front of the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign.

It’s a must-do for both tourists and locals, and I just haven’t marked that off the list yet.

Today: Best tip for tourists? Jonathan: Take a few hours and go to The Mob Museum! You get a real understanding for Las Vegas history just by visiting it, as it’s on the National Register of Historic Places and a place of true cultural significance to Las Vegas. While the Strip may be the face of Las Vegas, Downtown is its foundation, and The Mob Museum, housed in the original Federal courthouse, is a great way to embrace that. Today: Where do you see the most art in Las Vegas? Jonathan: The 18B Arts District in Downtown Las Vegas has so much to offer from so many talented artists. From stone-carving to large-scale paintings, and from both established and emerging artists, there is always something new to explore. If you’re interested in viewing what’s next for the arts community, should make a point to spend some time there and see the collaborations in the local arts movement and what it produces.
