Kilauea Volcano is putting on a show that can be easily seen (at press time), but conditions change quickly. First stop in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HVNP) is Kilauea Visitors Center. Onduty park rangers provide the latest volcanic updates. View the 20-minute film, ‘‘Born of Fire, Born of the Sea,’’ and check out interactive exhibits.

Short on time? Exit the visitors center for a trek on Earthquake Trail near Volcano House. Drive to Jaggar Museum and view Halema‘uma‘u from the overlook. Rangers offer a Life on the Edge talk at 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m. daily. Be sure to check out Thurston Lava Tube to experience a totally different environment.

The newly reopened Keanakako‘i Crater is also a good place to see cooled lava formations.

HVNP is always open; visitor center is open 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Entry is $10 per vehicle, 808-985-6000.

The public viewing area in Kalapana is about a 1.5-hour drive from the park, at the end of Hwy. 130 (Kea‘au-Pahoa bypass road), and requires a two-mile roundtrip hike. It’s open 4-10 p.m. daily. No cell phone coverage. Recorded updates: 808-961-8093.

Celebrate the 4th at Waikoloa Resort

WAIKOLOA—Bring the family for day-to-evening fun at Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace at Waikoloa Beach Resort (Map C:E10).

Kings’ Shops presents its 22nd Annual Rubber Duckie Race, a fundraiser for the United Cerebral Palsy of Hawaii. Lyman Museum exhibits, events HILO—The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawai‘i. Drop by to see the following exhibits: See a colorful display of traditional feather masterpieces presented

A special exhibit opening on July 26 kicks off the John Howard Pierce Photograph Collection that runs through Jan. 11, 2014. Pierce worked for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald from 1951 to 1968, and became curator of the museum upon his retirement. See images captured by this avid photographer who continued to shoot isle scenes from 1950 until his death in 1979.

big island film festival The Big Island Film Festival, May 23-27 at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai‘i and The Shops at Mauna Lani, celebrates narrative filmmaking as it features a slew of events—film screenings, social events, screenwriting workshops and a closing night “Best of the Fest” featuring a Hawaiian music concert and movies selected by audiences.

Daytime film screenings, filmmaker workshops, celebrity receptions and salutes, festival films and Best of the Fest take place on property.

The Shops at Mauna Lani Center Stage hosts family films (up to PG13) with free admission.

Snuba® is a term derived from the combination of snorkel and scuba. Air tanks remain on the ocean surface, allowing the diver to move around freely underwater minus the heavy equipment. Manta Ray Tours- The Big Island is the only place in the state that offers organized tours for people who are keen on snorkeling with manta rays. “Manta rays feed on plankton, which are attracted to lights,” says James L. Dolphin Tours- Various research projects on dolphins have shown that a variety of them—most notably the Hawaiian spinner and bottle nose dolphins—make their home in island waters.

During the day, they tend to rest near-shore where it’s easier to spot predators against the white of the sandy bottom. As night approaches, dolphins become lively, some of them jumping into the air and playing. It’s time to venture into deeper waters to feed.
