Stay late to see the glow of Halema‘uma‘u Crater
Kilauea Volcano is putting on a show that can be easily seen (as of press time), but conditions change quickly. First stop at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HVNP) is Kilauea Visitors Center. Onduty park rangers provide the latest volcanic updates. View the 20-minute film, ‘‘Born of Fire, Born of the Sea,’’ and check out interactive exhibits. Short on time? Exit the visitors center for a trek on Earthquake Trail near Volcano House. Drive to Jaggar Museum and view Halema‘uma‘u from the overlook. Be sure to check out Thurston Lava Tube to experience a rainforest environment (pictured above). Keanakako‘i Crater is also a good place to see cooled lava formations. HVNP is always open; visitor center is open 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Entry is $10 per vehicle, 808-985-6000. Also go online for details on daily ranger-led programs, nps.gov/havo. The public viewing area in Kalapana is about a 1.5-hour drive from the park, at the end of Hwy. 130 (Kea‘au-Pahoa bypass road), and requires a two-mile roundtrip hike. No cell phone coverage, so call before heading out for recorded updates: 808-961-8093. THIS WEEK BIG ISLAND

lots to see, Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA)/Tor Johnson
Like the island itself, activities here are big, bold, and most of all, FUN! Explore the island and you’ll encounter various microclimates—even snow—and lots to do in a short time. sun, sand & water activities The Big Island offers beachgoers a slate of lovely white-, black-, and even green-sand beaches on which to bask. Dining & Entertainment One of the greatest joys of being on vacation is sampling local flavors and different ethnic cuisine. As mom often said, ‘‘You don’t know if you don’t try,’’ so go on and taste test a variety of dishes. Discover the breadth of isle cuisine and have fun!
ingredients done right If you want to know, ask—that goes for seafood, produce and proteins. Find out if the fish comes from local waters, if the salad on your plate comes from isle farms or if it’s Hawai‘i Island grass-fed beef or free-range chickens. Many restaurants now work closely with local farmers in order to offer you the freshest, most conscientious choices on the menu, and Hawai‘i Island is the best place to start.
what is global cuisine? Take a seat and pull up a menu for your round-the-world adventure. How does Vegetable Nabemono Miso, Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Coconut Cream sound? Or does the Spicy Basil & Shrimp Fried Rice entice you? No matter where your palate takes you, sample a Huggo’s. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 79 variety of ethnic flavors.
favorites with an isle twist Think French toast made with Portuguese sweet bread, a toasted Hoagie bun filled with teriyakimarinated rib eye, or fresh sauteed mahi mahi served with sweet chili cream sauce rice. Or how about Guava Braised Baby Back Ribs? Does Wasabi Dusted Fritto Misto make your mouth water? That’s all we need to know.

asian flavors In Hawai‘i, there’s no escaping the influence of the Far East; at practically every eatery is some kind of Asian-inspired item. Whether Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese, you’re bound to find an eatery guaranteed to deliver the spice you’re looking for.

Hawai‘i’s petroglyphs
by
Fern Gavelek
Ancient Hawaiians called them “ki‘i pohaku.” These drawings or paintings on rock provide a unique look into the past as Hawaiians used them to communicate. See these reminders of the past near Kings’ Shops (Map C:E10). Also check out Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve (Map C:D8); access is through Mauna Lani Resort. Always treat these areas with proper respect.
