aptain Chris of Na Pali Riders has the only raft company consistently touring the ENTIRE 17 miles of the Na Pali Coast.* Captain Chris says, “Touring the Na Pali Coast truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We make sure that our passengers get to see it all including the famous sites of Hanakoa Valley, Hanakapi‘ai Valley, the Pirates Sea Cave, and the Double Door Cave. These are some of the most significant attractions on the Na Pali Coast and should not be missed.” The Na Pali Riders’ difference starts with attention to detail in all aspects of our Na Pali Coast Raft Tour. We offer a ride on our state-of-the-art 30-foot, 920 Zodiac raft. Departures are from the West Side’s Kikiaola Harbor in Waimea, the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast. Snorkeling takes place at one of three different locations depending on currents, water clarity and conditions permitting. All beginning snorkelers have our experienced and knowledgeable crewmen as their personal guides.

Ocean Safety Kaua‘i is bound by the waters of the Pacific, which can welcome beachgoers with a shimmery surface that belies a strong undercurrent. HTA / Tor Johnson Always play it safe by swimming at a lifeguarded beach and heeding any posted warning signs. If you’re not sure about ocean conditions, check with the lifeguard. If you happen to get caught in a rip current and feel yourself being swept away from shore, safety experts advise people to conserve your energy, keep calm, float and wave for help—don’t fight the current, float with it. Escape it by swimming parallel to the shoreline once you feel the current has released its hold on you. Wave for help.

fresh fish anyone?
C
hoosing the right fish from the menu is like selecting fine wine—each has its own taste, aroma and texture. People eat twice as much seafood in Hawai‘i as the U.S. per capita national average. What does that mean to you? Every restaurant has fresh fish on the menu with a not-so-familiar Hawaiian name. Use this guide to find the fish that has the qualities you enjoy the most.
Onaga
Long-Tail Red Snapper: Soft and moist with a delicate flavor, onaga can be baked, steamed or sauteed.
Opakapaka
Pink Snapper: This delicately flavored fish has a tender texture perfectly suited for baking, poaching and sauteing.
Shutome
Swordfish: This fish is tasty without any seasoning. It has a delicate, slightly fruity flavor and a subtle aroma. Texture is succulent and meaty.
Opah
Moonfish: Popular with chefs, opah has a juicy, rich flavor with a roast pork-like aroma. Texture is very tender.
More fish choices Ahi Tuna, Yellowfin/Bigeye Tuna
Mahimahi, Dolphin Fish
Considered one of Hawai‘i’s most popular choices, ahi is served raw as sliced sashimi or cooked rare.
Mahimahi is for the finicky fish eater. It has a mellow, lemony, sweet-rich flavor with a silky, yet flaky, tender texture.
Ono, Wahoo
Eat fresh fish
A distinctive, yet delicate, tangy-citrus flavor simillar to poultry or veal. Chewy and firm texture.
Enjoy fresh cuts of isle fish in sushi rolls, fresh sashimi, in a poke dish, as ceviche or in a seafood chowder. Ono! Delicious!

he bountiful food and lively Polynesian performances of today’s lu‘au has its roots in ancient Hawai‘i. The kapu system once forbade men and women from eating together, but in 1819, King Kamehameha I removed the law, hence allowing all to come together to enjoy their meals—this was the beginning of the lu‘au. Today, a few local families celebrate a special occasion—baby’s first birthday, graduation, anniversary or wedding—with a backyard lu‘au. Food, music and fun are casually enjoyed by all, and even if you’re not related by blood to the host family, you will be considered family by the end of the festivities. That is the spirit of the lu‘au, and in general, the spirit of the Hawaiian people. It’s your turn to become part of an extended family. Every lu‘au has its own distinct feature separating it from the others, but all provide a feast of Hawaiian and local fare, spirited performances, fun audience participation and lots of laughter. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary
T
his famous 160-acre coastal refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a striking peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point (Map C:E21). Kilauea Lighthouse and bird sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. Although the lighthouse isn’t open to the public, the grounds are, and a self-guided path to the point offers interpretive information. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary also has a presence with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles. Although a fully automated electronic beacon has replaced the Fresnel lens (once the largest glass
lens of its kind), the 1913 lighthouse still stands intact. Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1985, Kilauea Point and its lighthouse became part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and is closed on major federal holidays. To get there, turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Admission: Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413,

he river’s journey begins on the slopes of Mount Wai‘ale‘ale, a dormant crater that stands as a testament to the fiery beginnings of Kaua‘i’s eden-like beauty. At 5,243 feet, Wai‘ale‘ale SMITH’S FERN (Hawaiian for “rippling waters”) GROTTO CRUISE is considered one of the rainiest >smithskauai.com spots on earth. Its height, conical WAILUA MARINA STATE PARK 808 821 6892 shape and position in the island TOURS 9:30AM, 11AM, 2PM, chain create the trifecta of weather 3:30PM DAILY conditions for abundant rainfall. ALI‘I KAYAKS From the summit, the river travels 808 241 7700 nearly 10 miles down the southeast face emptying out its liquid cargo KAYAK WAILUA in two popular and easily accessible 808 822 3388 waterfalls: the 80-foot Wailua Falls and Opaeka‘a Falls (Map G:N10). “Opaeka‘a” means “rolling shrimp,” many of which were once plentiful in the stream. But the journey doesn’t end there. The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Its lushness is attributed to the river’s tendency to overflow its banks depositing nutrient-rich sediments along the river’s edge. Rich soil, coupled with the ancient Hawaiian’s acumen for horticulture, made the region a natural breadbasket. Tributaries carry the river inland allowing for the construction of fishponds. And while shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas. Shift into low gear with a lazy boat ride on Wailua River with Smith’s Fern Grotto Cruise. Started in 1946 by Walter Smith, Sr. and his wife, the family business continues four generations later. Hear the songs and stories of ancient Hawai‘i, and get a hula lesson too. Once at the landing, enjoy a short nature walk through a rainforest to the lush Fern Grotto.

Cruise the awe-inspiring Napali Coast
Situated on the north shore of Kaua‘i, the cliffs of the Napali Coast stand among the sheerest in the world. One of your best vacation adventures will be exploring this remote coast by sea. Take a boat ride or rafting excursion along the coast and see dolphins, flying fish and other marine life, in addition to beautiful turquoise waters. Guides will fill you in on the area’s history, plus point out sea caves and ancient Hawaiian sites. Sail on a catamaran specially designed to navigate the coastal waters with the folks at Blue Dolphin Charters. On the other hand, if you’re up for more of an adventure, they also offer raft tours. Take to the ocean aboard the 60-foot Lucky Lady with Kauai Sea Tours. If you’re looking for a leisurely sail complete with spacious decks, shaded seating, restrooms, freshwater showers and swim platform, then select a snorkel, sunset dinner or combo tour aboard the Lucky Lady. On the other hand, an ocean raft tour serves up an exciting day on the water with a beach landing at Nualolo Kai (April-October) and exploring sea caves pending ocean conditions. Owner Liko Ho‘okano invites you to experience the ultimate ocean adventure with Liko Kauai Cruises. Born and raised on Kaua‘i, and of native Hawaiian ancestry, Capt. Ho‘okano shares his passion for the ocean while adding some local flavor to every outing. Board the 49-foot Napali Kai III catamaran and enjoy unobstructed views, a shaded area, freshwater shower and spacious restroom. Morning and afternoon tours are available. You’ll have one heck of an adventure with Na Pali Riders, an adventure raft tour company specializing in Zodiac® rafting and snorkeling tours along the coast. Tour highlights include exploring the entire 17-mile coastline, snorkeling at a secluded bay, entering sea caves, encounters with dolphins and green sea turtles, plus light snacks and beverages. The spectacular Napali Coast has been the specialty of Na Pali Catamaran for the last 30 years. Buckle up for a day of ocean adventures that include snorkeling at the ancient Hawaiian fishing site of Nualolo Kai with snorkel and flotation devices provided. After an enjoyable lunch, hang on for the fun ride back to port!
Kayaking
Get down close to the water and power your way across the surface while enjoying the surrounding scenery and hearing the pleasing sound of paddle in water. If you’ve never kayaked before, ease into the experience on the “Class Zero” Wailua River via two family-owned and operated outfitters, Ali‘i Kayaks and Kayak Wailua. Wailua River is a nice location for all experience levels, and the best place for families and beginners. In addition, both companies include an added hike to their kayak itinerary.

In order to view the fascinating underworld of Hawai‘i’s waters, you need some snorkel gear. Snorkel Bob’s offers quality, exclusive Snorkel Bob Brand Seamo Betta™ and Li’l Mo Betta™ RX masks, Bigfoots (15-17) and Moflex fins, Ultima Bubba dry snorkel and Mofl02 for fresh air with every breath. Take advantage of the free 24-Hour Interisland Gear Return too. Also, rent a snorkel set for a week and get SB’s 250-page fish photo book, “Every Fish Tells a Story,” for $7.50 (regularly $28). Boss Frog’s Snorkel, Surf & Cycle has snorkel set rentals available, in addition to SUP boards, surfboards, boogie boards and underwater video cameras. Prefer to rent a bike or even golf clubs? They’ve got that too. Ask about arranging additional activities such as ocean, helicopter, ATV or zipline tours, plus lu‘au shows. All you’ll need for the beach is your swimsuit after dropping by Sun Shades Kauai & Beach Gear Rentals. They’ve got beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas, boogie boards, surf boards and snorkel

mask and fins. Also save with combo deals! Nukumoi Surf Co. located at Po‘ipu Beach is ready to get you out in the water with surfboards, SUP boards, body boards, snorkel gear and beach rentals. They also offer daily surf lessons for all ages, all levels at Po‘ipu Beach via Kaua‘i Surf School.
Go Whale Watching!
You’ve arrived just in time to visit with Hawai‘i’s annual visitors— the humpback whale. If you have never seen them in their element, then make your reservations now. If you have, it’s just never enough! Since departing their Alaskan feeding grounds throughout October and November, the humpback whales have made the 3,500-mile journey to Hawai‘i without feeding. In fact, they won’t feed until they return home to Alaska. Talk about fasting! Alaskan ask about whale waters are cold enough to support watch tours, page 76 the whales’ food—krill—while Hawai‘i waters are too warm, so their stay here is a time to mate, as well as nurture and care for their young, On a whale watch tour, you’ll learn all the fascinating facts about humpback whales, including behaviors such as spy hopping and breaching. And although there are state and federal laws that protect the whales from boats that venture too close, the whales just might surprise you by getting closer to check you out!

HTA / Robert Coello
LYDGATE STATE PARK
Once a place of refuge in ancient Hawai‘i, it’s now a good place for picnickers. Excellent swimming area for kids, picnic area and a community playground in the Lihu‘e/Kalapaki region. Lifeguard on duty. Map B:D18.
HANALEI BAY BEACH PARK Enjoy spectacular vistas and great swimming conditions. The view from here was made famous in the movie musical “South Pacific.” Beware of occasional rough ocean conditions. Lifeguard on duty. Map C:C11.
HTA / Tor Johnson
The beautiful beaches and sparkling ocean that surround Kaua‘i are wonderful vacation playgrounds. But before heading out to play, talk to your concierge or an activity provider about specific beach features, its surrounding waters and potential, invisible rip currents. For your safety, community volunteers have installed Rescue Tubes, 10 foot high tubes with personal flotation devices used to stabilize a distressed swimmer. If you see one at the beach, be sure to read about their usage. THIS WEEK KAUAI

One of the best places to discover local flavor, in more ways than one, is at a farmers market. Locally known as Sunshine Markets on Kaua‘i, these markets are a must-visit to see and learn about a variety of unique organic produce and vibrant tropical flowers. Talk with local farmers and get to know the person behind the product; it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. You’re also supporting local farmers—Mahalo!

THIS WEEK KAUAI
I mean you, Bubba, & Li’l Bubba too–– Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry. Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime. The Bubba snorkels are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today. No snuks, leaks, or pond scum in the gear wash.
FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!
