Be aware of Hawai‘i Motor Safety Laws Cell phones: • Texting while driving or using handheld cell phones is against the law for all drivers, regardless of age.

• Drivers younger than 18 are prohibited from talking on handsfree mobile devices while older drivers are allowed to use them.

Seatbelts: • All occupants of vehicles, regardless of age, must wear a seat belt. This law applies to front and back seat occupants. Hawai‘i boasts the second-most use of seat belts in the nation.

Child Car Seats: • Keiki (children) under the age of 4 must be secured in a federally approved child safety seat.

• Children aged 4-7 must ride in a booster or car seat. Kids 4’9’’ or taller, or those riding in vehicles with lap-only seat belts in rear seats, are exempt.

Use of Helmets: • All motorcycle and motor scooter riders aged 17 and younger must wear a helmet. Ditto for bicycle riders aged 15 and younger.

Eo e Emalani i Alaka‘i he Garden Isle is abuzz with upcoming cultural activities for the family—and you’re invited!

Celebrate the versatile coconut in an area home to groves of coconut trees, known as the Coconut Coast. The 18th Annual Coconut Festival takes place October 4-5 at Kapa‘a Beach Park. Graceful stands of coconut trees line the drive along Kuhio Hwy. 56 between Wailua and Kapa‘a. These are the remnants of old-time plantations. See ad Coconut Festival for event details.

Eo e Emalani i Alaka‘i is an annual event that commemorates a journey undertaken by Queen Emma in 1871. The 26th annual festival on October 11 will be held in Koke‘e State Park at the spot where the journey began. Enjoy exhibits, craft demonstrations and snack sales from 10 a.m.

At noon, you’ll step back in time as a traditional royal procession arrives. Queen Emma and her entourage will enter Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow on horseback accompanied by hula halau (groups) from around the state, who will then perform chants and dances as gifts for the Queen. Celebrate with them in the adventuresome spirit of Emma Naea Rooke presented by Hui o Laka.

It’s never too early to begin your holiday shopping! The Hawaiian Holiday Craft Fair presented by Malie Foundation helps you do just that 8 a.m.-2 p.m. November 1 at Kaua‘i Beach Resort. “Year of Na Loea O Na Mea Hana Lima (Master Crafters)” is this year’s theme.

Ke‘e Beach is the furthest point for all vehicles. To the east is Ha‘ena Beach Park with sheltered picnic tables. To the west of Ke‘e Beach is the widely known Kalalau Trail, one of the world’s premier hikes.

The first two miles of the trail open to all is a popular day hike.

It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. Be aware that crossing Hanakapi‘ai Stream is dangerous when it becomes swollen due to recent rain; wait until it subsides to cross.

The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it ends at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path.

To tackle this advanced hike, a permit is mandatory, as well as sufficient food, water and shelter. Map G.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary

his famous 160-acre coastal refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a striking peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point (Map C:E21).

Kilauea Lighthouse and bird sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. Although the lighthouse isn’t open to the public, the grounds are, and a self-guided path to the point offers interpretive information. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary also has a presence with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles.

Although a fully automated electronic beacon has replaced the Fresnel lens (once the largest glass

lens of its kind), the 1913 lighthouse still stands intact.

Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1985, Kilauea Point and its lighthouse became part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and is closed on major federal holidays. To get there, turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Admission: Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413,

‘Kaua‘i’s Biggest Little Town’

efore the arrival of Captain Cook in the late 1700s, Hanapepe Valley on Kaua‘i’s west side was home to many early Hawaiians. They grew taro and cultivated salt production in saltwater ponds.

HTA / Robert Coello Some time around the 1880s, the sugar industry began flourishing in this area. Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants made their home here. Others began small farms to supply the growing community. At the turn of the 19th century, Hanapepe’s population was comprised of predominantly enterprising Asian immigrants. It became a bustling center of commerce during the pre-World War II era and was named “Kaua‘i’s Biggest Little Town” by the Hanapepe Merchants Association.

Today, the historic storefronts house numerous fine art galleries, many run by artists with their studios in the back. If you stop by on a Friday night, the town bustles with an Art Fair, beckoning visitors inside galleries and restaurants. Pick up a copy of the Historic Hanapepe Walking Tour map for a self-guided exploration of the significant structures and locations in town, many with a colorful past.

The historic buildings and quaint character of the town have also lured many filmmakers to use this location; some of the more notable ones include the TV mini-series, “The Thorn Birds,” and the animated tale “Lilo and Stitch.”

The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Rich soil, coupled with the ancient Hawaiian’s acumen for horticulture, made the region a natural breadbasket. Tributaries carry the river inland allowing for the construction of fishponds. And while shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas.

o get a glimpse of Hanalei before entering the little town, travel past Princeville and you’ll notice that the mile markers on Highway 56 revert back to 0. Stop at the gas station nearby (the last one on the north shore) and across the street is the Hanalei Lookout.

The views from the lookout are beautiful with Hanalei Valley stretched out before you looking like a green patchwork quilt, lush and geometrical. The neat sections of wetland contain the semi-submerged taro fields that have been worked by generations of Hawaiian farmers.

Running down the center of the fields is the Hanalei River (one of 14 American heritage rivers), with its origins in the rainfall from Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, in the approximate center of the island.

Kayakers often navigate the peaceful river.

The quaint one-lane Hanalei Bridge is the veritable doorway to the town. You’ll find an assortment of boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.

Hanalei Bay is rimmed by nearly two miles of white sandy beach. While swimming conditions in the bay can be hazardous, the off-shore area is popular with surfers. Hanalei Pier (shown above), made famous in the movie “South Pacific,” stretches out into the bay. Take a twilight stroll and bask in the colors of a magical sunset.
