Kaua‘i’s northernmost point Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary. The 160-acre refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point.

Historic Significance

This wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary also has a presence, with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles. Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and is closed on major federal holidays. Turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413, Map C:E20. THIS WEEK KAUAI

Napali Coast

The Napali coastline on Kaua‘i’s north shore stands among the sheerest in the world. The serrated-edged cliffs jut up into the sky and abruptly drop from view into the ocean. The first two miles of the trail is a popular day hike for many visitors and residents. It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it finally comes to an end at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path. If you’re intent on tackling the entire trail, you should be well prepared with sufficient food, water, shelter and a permit. This intermediate to advanced hike requires hikers to A difficult portion at least be in better than average of Kalalau Trail physical condition. aptain Chris of Na Pali Riders has the only raft company consistently touring the ENTIRE 17 miles of the Na Pali Coast.* Captain Chris says, “Touring the Na Pali Coast truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We make sure that our passengers get to see it all including the famous sites of Hanakoa Valley, Hanakapi‘ai Valley, the Pirates Sea Cave, and the Double Door Cave. These are some of the most significant attractions on the Na Pali Coast and should not be missed.” The Na Pali Riders’ difference starts with attention to detail in all aspects of our Na Pali Coast Raft Tour. We offer a ride on our state-of-the-art 30-foot, 920 Zodiac raft. Departures are from the West Side’s Kikiaola Harbor in Waimea, the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast. Snorkeling takes place at one of three different locations depending on currents, water clarity and conditions permitting. All beginning snorkelers have our experienced and knowledgeable crewmen as their personal guides.

kaua‘i Cultural events Eo e Emalani i Alaka‘i Festival courtesy Hui O Laka The Garden Isle will host several Hawaiian cultural events in the coming months featuring the unique facets of our host culture. Here are the highlights: Eo e Emalani i Alaka‘i, or The Emalani Festival, is an authentic and powerful recreation of a journey embarked upon by Hawai‘i’s beloved Queen Emma in 1871. Led by her guide, Kaluahi, the queen began her excursion on the lush expanse of Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke‘e State Park (Map D:Inset). Visitors will relive this experience on Saturday, October 12 as music plays beneath the open sky from 10 a.m. Queen Emma will enter the field on horseback at noon, and offerings of music and hula will continue until she exits at 4 p.m. Hawaiian crafts and snacks will be available for purchase. More information available at kokee.org. The highly versatile, yet humble coconut is celebrated at the 17th Annual Coconut Festival, October 5-6 at Kapa‘a Beach Park (Map B:D6). The public is invited to enjoy a full range of activities over two days. They include cooking demos by Kaua‘i’s top hotel and restaurant chefs, cultural exhibits, live performances, local crafts and lots more for the entire family. THIS WEEK KAUAI

Stunning oceanfront holes, majestic mountain backdrops, deep ravines, mango and guava tree forests, and lush greenery that Kaua‘i is known for all compete for your attention as you make your way through each course. Whether you’re ready for a game at a beautiful resort course or a more affordable independent course, the island offers 10 different course layouts at seven venues. Looking to book several golf courses at once? Call on the services of businesses that can offer suggestions to suit your specific needs and book you a tee time on Kaua‘i, Maui, O‘ahu or the Big Island without any fees. Whatever level of experience, you’re sure to enjoy your golf game. Once you tee off with a picture postcard background, you won’t settle for anything less!

Putting on seashore paspalum grass Many of Kaua‘i’s golf courses use the salt tolerant tropical turf grass called seashore paspalum. It’s eco-friendly and easier to maintain because it doesn’t require as much water, herbicide, or pesticide as other turf grasses. “It makes a great putting and playing surface on fairways and tee boxes,” says Matt Torry, golf pro at Kiahuna Golf Club.

JOURNEY TO A RIVER’S END

Fueled by nearly 440 inches of rain each year, Wailua River is a powerful presence for native Hawaiians, marked by the construction of seven heiau (shrines) along the river. From the summit of Mt. The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. fish, sea turtles, curious dolphins and more. Activity providers have professional trained guides and offer a variety of dive options, as well as classes.

Surfing Surfing as both sport and transportation is important in Hawai‘i’s history, dating back to the 15th century. Over the years, surfing has branched out into many variations. For example, in body or boogie boarding, you’ll ride waves on fourfoot boards in a reclining or kneeling position. With stand up paddle (SUP) boarding, no waves are needed as you glide on top of the water. You’ll get a full body workout and it’s great fun for the whole family.

I mean you, Bubba, & Li’l Bubba too–– Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry. Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime. The Bubba snorkels are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today.

FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!
