GEOPHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Haleakala National Park encompasses many microcosmic environments featuring plants and wildlife found nowhere else on the planet. As earth’s largest dormant shield volcano, it rises over 10,000 feet, with a crater 3,000 feet deep and a 21-mile circumference. Map H.

VISITOR CENTERS Park headquarters is one mile from the park entrance and is open 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m., 808-572-4459. Haleakala Visitor Center is near the summit, 10 miles from the park entrance. It’s open sunrise-3 p.m. daily and has interpretive exhibits and restrooms. Kipahulu Visitor Center sits in the coastal portion of Haleakala National Park and can only be accessed via the road to Hana (Map G). It offers daily orientations and is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. For info call 808-248-7375.

HAWAIIAN MYTHOLOGY Ancient Hawaiian chants tell of the demigod Maui who lassoed La (the sun) atop Haleakala (House of the Sun) in order to create longer days for his mother, who needed more time to dry her kapa cloth (tree bark fabric) in the sun. THIS WEEK MAUI

The answer to “Where did you get that?” isn’t a store. It’s a story.

The fun begins by choosing your oyster from the bucket. Next, the ring of a bell and shout of “Aloha!” and there’s your genuine pearl. Then select a beautiful sterling silver or gold setting, perhaps a ring, pendant or matching earrings. Your pearl will be mounted as you watch. And not only will you have an elegant piece of fine jewelry, but a memory to share with friends – and each other – forever. Original. Authentic. And part of Hawaii for more than 30 years.

Kepaniwai Heritage Garden

‘Iao Valley State Monument is steeped in Hawaiian history and lore. Located about three miles west of Wailuku at the end of winding ‘Iao Valley Road, this park is known for its lush, tropical vegetation and crystal clear stream. The valley was the site of Kamehameha the Great’s notorious battle with Maui warriors that ended in his conquest of the island. It was said that there were so many dead bodies they “dammed the waters” of the streambed. The park features paved walkways and botanical gardens for visitors to enjoy. Towering through clouds and reaching to the heavens is Kuka‘emoku, the famous landmark ‘Iao Needle, which rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor. One of the walkways leads up to a platform for viewing the needle and the valley basin out to Kahului Harbor. Interpretive signage provides a background on the history of the area. An ethnobotanical walk meanders down to the streambed, highlighting native plants. $5 entry fee; it’s open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. lovely lana‘i Munro Trail

HTA / Dana Edmunds

HTA / Ron Dahlquist

This lovely gem of an island is part of Maui County and within close proximity of Maui island. Enjoy a romantic getaway for a few days at one of two luxurious resorts. Another option is to set out on a fun-filled day trip via boat or air to Lana‘i. Once there, the activity options are many: enjoy a game of golf at either The Experience at Ko‘ele that was designed by Greg Norman or The Challenge at Manele designed by Jack Nicklaus. If you’re up for some adventure, rent a car or jeep to explore the Garden of the Gods, the ultimate rock garden, or the ancient ruins of Kaunolu Village, a fishing village thought to be inhabited in the 15th century. Jump in your four-wheel drive and head out on Munro Trail that takes you through a rain forest to stunning views of Maui, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Hawai‘i Island and O‘ahu. Stretch your legs a bit with a leisurely walk along eight-mile-long Shipwreck Beach; good for beachcombing, not so much for swimming. Hulopo‘e Beach is a protected marine life conservation area that’s a favorite with divers and snorkelers. On the left side of the beach is Pu‘u Pehe Rock, also known as Sweetheart Rock (pictured top left).

Maui is a golfer’s dream, offering visitors a wide range of courses—many of them championship—which are top ranked in the world. Each course features its own unique variety of terrain elements and every one presents stunning backdrops of panoramic ocean views, high mountain slopes, misty rainforest valleys and more. Maui’s golf courses are scattered throughout Maui, Lana‘i and Moloka‘i. Some have been designed by noted golfers and course architects, such as Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. This is the place where the pros come; don’t be surprised if you spot Geoff Ogilvy, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and others on the greens. Surfing Learning to surf on a longboard is the best way for a beginner to experience the sport. You’ll catch a variety of waves and it’s easier to stand up because of the greater surface area. Other surfing variations include body surfing or boogie boarding on four-foot boards. Another popular variation is stand-up paddle surfing (SUP). It provides a full body workout that engages the core area.

‘Tis the season for whale watching by Karee Carlucci

In the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, we hear of the birth of whales: Hanau ka palaoa noho i kai (Born is the whale living in the sea). As the largest ocean animal, the whale was considered a majestic embodiment of Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the ocean, its animals, water and growth on land and in the sea. Whales, called palaoa in general, were so revered by ancient Hawaiians that obtaining their ivory teeth to be worn as a lei niho palaoa (whale tooth pendant) was reserved only for members of the ruling class. From December through April, humpback whales and their fans flock to the islands. Since it is estimated that 60 percent of the North Pacific Humpback whale population migrates to Hawai‘i’s waters each season, your chances of viewing a whale in action are very good. The islands of Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe have long been recognized as the hub of this social scene, providing opportunities for watching whales in the wild. As the nation’s only National Marine Sanctuary dedicated to the humpback whale, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was established in 1992 and has its headquarters in Kihei (Map E:E7). World-renowned marine biologists and researchers gather in these protected waters to collect data, record and photograph whales every winter and spring. Researchers identify individual whales by the pattern of markings and coloration on their tail flukes, which are as unique as a fingerprint. Humpbacks winter in Hawai‘i’s warm waters to mate and calve. Their gestation period is nearly a year, so a whale conceived in Maui County one winter will be born here the next. A humpback mother and newborn calf will stay close to shore for nursing. The calf will consume about 100 gallons of his mother’s fat-rich milk a day and can double in length during his first year. While the calf whale watch tours is growing and learning whale behaviors, • Boss Frog’s, 888-700-3764, he and his mother are accompanied by a bossfrog.com young escort whale (usually a male, but • Lahaina Cruise Company, 808-667-6165, hawaiiocean not the father) who appears to act as a project.com bodyguard. • Pacfic Whale Foundation, 808Weather and ocean conditions have 856-8387, pacificwhale.org more impact on the likelihood of seeing whales than time of day does. pareo

Cowboy hats are to Texas what pareos or sarongs are to Hawai‘i—both are representative of the culture and essential to the character of the people. There are few items that carry the same iconic weight in the country as the pareo does for Hawai‘i. Call it a pareo or a sarong, this lovely wrap-around and work of art is many things to many people. Throughout history, the world has known it by different names. In Tahiti and Hawai‘i, these vibrant cloths are called “pareau.” In Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia they are “sarongs,” and in Samoa, “lavalava.” Rarely found in big department stores, these sumptuously colored fabrics are more likely spotted at a flea market or in a small shop. Take your time when shopping since each one offers a different design. Look for a light fabric, often rayon, that hangs gently and is lively in color. Tightly tuck the fabric under itself or use a buckle or coconut clip to secure it in place. Learn the many ways this feminine attire can beautify and accentuate your wardrobe. When you wear a Hawaiian pareo, you’ll be able to count the number of compliments received. Accessorize it with mother-of-pearl, shells or beads to complete the island look. Pareos are one of the many treasures inspired by the beauty and easy lifestyle of Hawai‘i.

Mofl0

2 w/ MO2 delivers fresh air on every breath. Here’s how it works:

as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a doublevalve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath. So GET DOWN & come up to

MoflO O2™ for the day, the week or for keeps.

No snuks, leaks, or pond scum in the gear wash.
