HAWAIIAN MYTHOLOGY Ancient Hawaiian chants tell of the demigod Maui who lassoed La (the sun) atop Haleakala (house of the sun). Maui wanted to help out his mother, who needed to dry her kapa cloth (tree bark fabric) in the sun. He accomplished this by creating longer days for her. THIS WEEK MAUI

Removing the pig from the imu. An imu is a man-made hole in the ground, filled with kiawe wood and imu stones that hold heat but are porous enough to not shatter. Once hot, banana and ti leaves are used to line the hole. Hot stones placed inside the pig will cook it all day long, resulting in succulent, mouth-watering meat fit for royalty.

on Maui

Maui is a golfer’s dream, offering visitors a wide range of courses—many of them championship—which are top ranked in the world. Each course features its own unique variety of terrain elements and every one presents stunning backdrops of panoramic ocean views, high mountain slopes, misty rainforest valleys and more. Maui’s golf courses are scattered throughout Maui, Lana‘i and Moloka‘i. Some have been designed by noted golfers and course architects, such as Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. This is the place where the pros come; don’t be surprised if you spot Geoff Ogilvy, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and others on the greens. The Magic Isle hosts a significant share of important golf tournaments including the PGA Championship season opener at the Plantation Course, Kapalua, and the LPGA Tour at Ka‘anapali Golf Courses. For in-depth lessons and instruction, the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and Kapalua Golf Academy can help. Whether you’re an adult or junior golfer, imagine shooting your best game as crashing waves sprinkle sea foam into the air and some of the most beautiful picture perfect backgrounds in the world!

Explore Maui’s

upcountry

Maui’s upcountry area stretches upward along the slopes of Haleakala from Pukalani to the communities of Makawao, Kula, Keokea and ‘Ulupalakua. Cool and high, this region is truly Maui’s breadbasket, producing much of the island’s unique products utilized by local chefs. Visit a goat dairy in Oma‘opio for a milking tour, then taste elegant handmade truffles and award-winning goat cheeses. In nearby Kula, gardeners and flower lovers will enjoy tours of fragrant lavender, protea and other tropical botanicals. Visit Maui’s winery at ‘Ulupalakua Ranch to sample sweet pineapple wine. Rural Makawao still has hitching posts fronting boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Doughnuts-on-a-stick and “heavenly” cream puffs from Komoda Store and Bakery are popular sweet treats. Nearby, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center features notable local artists’ exhibitions and offer ongoing workshops to the community.

Diving under: snorkel and snuba Imagine swimming among jewel-tone tropical fish and other marine inhabitants. On Maui, snorkeling and Molokini go hand-in-hand. This crescent-shaped islet sits two-and-a-half miles off Maui’s southern coast and rises 156 feet above sea level. Designated a State Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, it’s been voted one of the world’s top 10 favorite snorkel and dive spots. Legend has it that the crescent-shaped isle is the result of a jealous rage. The volcano goddess, Pele, had a dream lover, Lohi‘au, who lived in Ma‘alaea. Lohi‘au married a mo‘o (lizard) and in anger, Pele bisected the lizard. The tail became Pu‘uola‘i Hill in Makena and the head turned into the Molokini islet. The hottest underwater activity on Maui is called “snuba,” a hybrid between snorkeling and scuba diving. You will enjoy the freedom to

Gliding across

A jet ski ride involves driving a personal watercraft propelled by jets of water. It has a seat and handlebars for steering, somewhat like a motorcycle ride on water (without the wheels, of course). There is typically room for two people on one of these watercraft. A kayak for one, two, or three paddlers is another great way to get really close to the water. Vendors may provide tours with knowledgeable guides who provide tips and share cultural and historical facts. Maybe you just want to go on cruise control. Take in the expansive coastline on a sunset or dinner cruise, listening to live Hawaiian music. Or, you may prefer to hunt the ocean depths for trophy fish!

Surfing Learning to surf on a longboard is the best way for a beginner to experience the sport. You’ll catch a variety of waves and it’s easier to stand up because of the greater surface area. Other surfing variations include body surfing or boogie boarding on four-foot boards. Another popular variation is stand-up paddle surfing (SUP). It provides a full body workout that engages the core area.

Ocean safety tips • • • • •

Swim in lifeguarded areas Never swim alone Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves Rely on your swimming ability, not a flotation device When in doubt, don’t go out!

Find distinctive island gifts for yourself, family and friends at many locations and out-of-the-way spots. A versatile piece of tropical apparel is a pareo. These light and bright fabrics are available in a rainbow of colors and readily found at a swap meet (local flea market). It’s a fun accessory and can be worn many ways, or throw it over an end table at home for a splash of island color. In Hawaiian culture, weaving is a finely honed art. Lauhala (leaves from the pandanus tree) are often fashioned into hats, table mats and baskets. Add a handcrafted feather lei around the hat brim for a truly Hawaiian look. See beautifully turned wood carvings on home decor pieces, including art, bowls and serving utensils. Nothing says aloha like a taste of the tropics. Scout out Maui’s gourmet foods at farmers’ markets and specialty shops. You’ll find cookies, salad dressing, jams and other treats made with ingredients like macadamia nuts, lilikoi, papaya, Maui-grown coffee and more.

Rejuvenate

77 97

on Maui

The tropical life offers the quintessential mode of “letting go,” something easily attained on the beaches of Maui. But consider alternate ways to rejuvenate the spirit, mind and body. For example, you’ll find many fine resort spas dotting the island. There are also small establishments offering wellness treatments. Some of the options available include ancient Hawaiian healing methods, the use of medicinal plants, hot smooth stones (wela pohaku), touch techniques like lomi lomi massage or a healing session with a kahuna (teacher). Whatever wellness treatment you select, be sure to discuss your preferences before booking the appointment.

visit ‘iao valley state monument In 1790, the forces of Kamehameha I clashed with Maui’s King Kahekili in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands resulting in massive bloodshed. Today, the monolithic ‘Iao Needle is softened by the lush tranquility of the valley and rush of the stream. ‘Iao means “cloud supreme,” and it aptly describes the cloudy mist often shrouding the nearby mountain tops. Take an easy hike along railed paved paths to view the verdant valley from the top of the stairs. The park is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Restroom facilities are available. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy a quiet break in the day. $5 per vehicle, Map A:F1.

Mofl0

2 w/ MO2 delivers fresh air on every breath. Here’s how it works:

as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a doublevalve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath. So GET DOWN & come up to

MoflO O2™

for the day, the week or for keeps.
