The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center should be the first stop of your day at Pearl Harbor. Day-of tickets for all four sites are available.
how it began On the quiet morning of December 7, 1941, 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet sat in the calm waters of Pearl Harbor. Seven of nine battleships were tied up along Battleship Row and naval aircraft were lined up at various air stations. At 7:55 a.m. the first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived, and at approximately 8:10 a.m., the USS Arizona exploded. It would be the first of many explosions around the island that morning.
Plan your visit Start off with a visit to Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, open 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily. Admission, movie, museum and boat ride to the memorial are free with tickets distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Either go early or make advance reservations by visiting recreation.gov. Call for recorded info: 808-954-8778. You can also visit pearlharborhistoricsites.org, 1-877-444-6777. The USS Arizona Memorial, World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, is one of four sites, collectively known as the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, and each has its own story to tell. They also include the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. Additional info on all four historic sites is on page 120. THIS WEEK OAHU

Hawai‘i’s nearly perfect, year-round weather makes it possible for all visitors to enjoy outdoor activities. Go hiking in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon. We love our tradewinds that keep the vog or volcanic haze—courtesy of Kilauea on the Big Island—at bay. However, when winds blow in from the south, there is an upside to the added humidity—gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. On those days, just sit back on the beach and drink it all in. by Fern Gavelek Gone is the familiar AFC versus NFC all-star matchup for the annual NFL Pro Bowl. A new format makes fantasy football a reality as two teams compete in a “best in the NFL” match up. For the first time ever, the game will be unconferenced, fans will see field match ups they’ve never seen before, and everyone had the opportunity to be part of the action. Here’s how: A field of 88 all-star players was determined by fans, coaches and players—without regard to conference. Via online and web-enabled smart phones, fans cast their ballots through December 26 with players and coaches voting December 23-26. Top players during the balloting included quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, running backs Jamaal Charles and Marshawn Lynch and wide receivers Calvin Johnson and A. J. Green. All stars were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches with each group’s votes counting one-third. The top players in each position earned distinction as all stars, regardless of how many were from the AFC or NFC. Players will be assigned their teams through the first-ever Pro Bowl Draft; it will be televised on the NFL Network during the week leading up the to game. The 2014 Pro Bowl is 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 at Aloha Stadium and televised live on NBC at 7 p.m. EST. Expect to see a new look for this year’s Nike uniforms, with sport amplified design details like the vibrant colors of yellow volt and orange, plus Pro Bowl achievement star on nameplates. Pre-game hoopla happening on O‘ahu include the NFL Pro Bowl Block Party in Waikiki and NFL Tailgate Party at Richardson Field, plus family day, cheer and autograph sessions. Tickets on sale through www.ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000, or visit the Aloha Stadium box office.

Downtown Honolulu is a rich mix of beautiful historic buildings where ali‘i (members of Hawai‘i’s nobility) once lived and modernday structures reflect the mid-day sun. Architectural buffs will not be disappointed. Hawai‘i is unique to the nation’s states in many ways, but a visit to downtown Honolulu best illustrates the state’s unusual place in history. It’s the only one to have once been ruled by its own monarchy. King Kalakaua dedicated the building two years later in 1874. This palace, meant to be a place of grandeur for the monarchy, was the site of its dissolution on January 17, 1893. The churches of downtown Honolulu are destinations in their own right. Kawaiaha‘o Church, on the corner of Punchbowl and King Streets, was built by the first missionaries to settle in Honolulu. Its walls are made of coral rock and it is the burial site of King William Lunalilo and his parents. St. Andrew’s Cathedral, located next to Washington Place, was built by the Anglican Church, using stones that were shipped from England. Many of Hawai‘i’s monarchs worshiped here. Both still function as houses of worship. Stop in to see these churches during one of their Sunday morning services. THIS WEEK OAHU

by Karee Carlucci In the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, we hear of the birth of whales: Hanau ka palaoa noho i kai (Born is the whale living in the sea). As the largest ocean animal, the whale was considered a majestic embodiment of Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the ocean, its animals, water and growth on land and in the sea. Whales, called palaoa in general, were so revered by ancient Hawaiians that obtaining their ivory teeth to be worn as a lei niho palaoa (whale tooth pendant) was reserved only for members of the ruling class. Today, whales are still revered in Hawai‘i, particularly the humpback referred to as kohola. Weather and ocean conditions have more impact on the likelihood of seeing whales than time of day does. Look for a blow (spout of water vapor) against the horizon or huge splashes of white water against the blue sea. Photographing whales is fairly simple: Hold the camera steady and don’t try to follow the motion of a whale. Take many shots to give yourself better odds for the perfect photo. Laulau - It’s like unwrapping a gift—peel away the outer ti leaves to find edible taro leaves that look and taste much like cooked spinach. Inside, you’ll find either pork, chicken or butterfish. Usually cooked in the imu (underground oven), laulau is also steamed on the stovetop.
Kalua pig - The highlight of every lu‘au is the uncovering of the kalua pig that’s been cooking in the imu for hours. Its flavor is smoky, salty; consistency is tender and juicy. It can also be cooked in a slow cooker or oven for the same delicious flavor. Lomilomi salmon - It may not be a traditional Hawaiian dish, but lomilomi is a favorite. It’s made with diced salmon, tomatoes, green and round onions and salt to taste. Let it marinate overnight to enhance the flavor of the salmon. The salmon’s omega-3 fatty acids are a plus! Poi - Certainly an acquired taste, poi is made from mashing steamed or baked taro root, and adding water to create a desired consistency. Because the taro plant, or kalo, is central to the Hawaiian people; its cultivation is an honored tradition.

A Hawai‘i vacation just isn’t complete without experiencing a lu‘au. Whether you’re a novice or returning guest, you’ll never tire of the aloha shared by all, the spirited performances and tables laden with delicious Hawaiian fare. Step off the bus and you’re transported into the Hawai‘i of yesteryear. The rush of Waikiki is beyond sight and sound, and all you hear are warm greetings of “Aloha!” set against the backdrop of a setting sun. Even if you’ve come solo or as a couple, you’re now part of an extended family that includes fellow guests. The various elements that make up a lu‘au are essentially the same—the uncovering of the kalua pig from the imu (underground oven), perhaps some cultural demonstrations, a bounty of food and Polynesian entertainment that includes a fireknife dancer. However, each lu‘au has its own unique flair that sets it apart from the rest. You’ll have to experience them all to know which is your favorite—it’s all part of the fun! Just remember that casual attire is adequate, alohawear is the dress of choice, and elastic waistbands are recommended! •Ali‘i Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center— Located away Polynesian Cultural Center from the bustle of Waikiki, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a gem on O‘ahu’s northeastern shore. It’s well worth the drive as you take in the chiseled Ko‘olau mountain range, white sand beaches and neighborhoods along the way. the iconic aloha shirt
by
Twain Newhart
Harry S. Truman, our 33rd president wore one when he made the cover of Life Magazine in 1951. Elvis Presley, “The King,” paired his with swim trunks in the movie “Blue Hawai‘i.” But it was actor Tom Selleck of “Magnum P.I.” who catapulted his into prime time television. The humble aloha shirt; part icon and part working man’s everyday lay-around-the-house shirt. It’s the shirt that Sinatra made cool in from “Here to Eternity” (1953). The Hawaiian aloha shirt is a symbol forever linked with Hawai‘i. It was in 1931 that a young college graduate named Ellery Chun came home during the Great Depression to work in his father’s dry goods store in Honolulu, who created the first aloha shirt. He registered the name “Aloha” in 1936 and ran a print ad in a local newspaper and first coined the phrase “aloha shirt.” The rest is history. Through the years, numerous designs by a multitude of companies have maintained the aloha shirt’s worldwide mass appeal. But some of the original shirts with original labels are collector’s items and are sometimes worth thousands of dollars. Look through the shopping guide for stores that carry one of the best souvenirs the islands have to offer. Use it, wear it—make it a favorite!

Edged by a 2,000-foot golden beach, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a natural draw for first-time visitors to O‘ahu, as well as seasoned travelers. It’s the state’s first designated Marine Life Conservation District, and as such, aims to educate all who pass through its gates via a short walk-through exhibit and informational video that encourages all to become stewards for the fragile beauty that is the living reef. Its usually gentle waters are home to a glorious world of tropical fish in every color you can imagine. See schools of vibrant butterfly fish; black-striped manini, or convict tang; the aptly named trumpetfish; pastel-colored surgeonfish; and multi-colored parrotfish. You might even spot a Hawaiian green sea turtle munching on coral! Restrooms, showers are available bayside. Open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. daily; closed on Tuesdays. Fees: $1 per vehicle, $7.50 per person, 808-3964229. TIP: Go early to avoid long lines and a full parking lot. North Shore
HTA / Kirk Lee Aeder
Situated along the world-famous North Shore coast and surrounded by miles of agricultural land and humble homes, the town of Hale‘iwa is a down-to-earth hub of community-minded individuals, locally owned restaurants and cafes, one-of-a-kind boutiques and galleries. The local folk are friendly and many a transplant have found a home in this part of paradise. A world away from Waikiki, this part of the island has its share of places to explore, activities to experience and people to meet. Do more than simply pass through these parts—spend time to really see what the North Shore is all about and meet the people who make this place special.

A little ways down the street, Dillingham Airfield is home to aerial activities guaranteed to thrill any takers, as well as offer the very best views of the North Shore. If you’re up for a hot coastal hike, Ka‘ena Point sits at the spot where the Waianae mountains drop into the sea. Drive to the end of Hwy. 930 and walk the relatively remote 2.7-mile (one-way) stretch of coastline peppered with tide pools and views of the Makua coastline. The trail is also accessible from Ka‘ena Point State Park at the end of Hwy. 93 on the Waianae side, so you’ll most likely encounter hikers coming from that side of the island. Considered a sacred part of the island in Hawaiian culture, Ka‘ena Point is also home to native flora and seabirds that make their nests in holes in the ground, so take caution where you step. During the humpback whale season, you may also see whales along the shoreline. It’s hot and dry with blustery winds, so be prepared with water, snacks, a hat or cap and sturdy shoes. Map D:A21.

O‘ahu is bound by the waters of the Pacific that can welcome beachgoers with a shimmery surface that belies a strong undercurrent. Always play it safe by swimming at a lifeguarded beach and heed any posted warning signs. If you’re not sure about ocean conditions, check with the lifeguard on duty. If you happen to get caught in a rip current and feel yourself being swept away from shore, safety experts advise people to conserve your energy, keep calm, float and wave for help—don’t fight the current, float with it. Escape it by swimming parallel to the shoreline once you feel the current has released its hold. Wave for assistance if you’re unable to make it back to shore on your own. THIS WEEK OAHU

Dedicated by the Territory of Hawai‘i in 1927 to the more than 10,000 Hawai‘i servicemen who served in World War I, and the 101 of them who died during its course, this “living memorial” has been neglected throughout the years. In its glory days, the natatorium hosted celebrity swimmers such as Esther Williams, Buster Crabbe and Johnny Weissmuller.
