how it began On the quiet morning of December 7, 1941, 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet sat in the calm waters of Pearl Harbor. Seven of nine battleships were tied up along Battleship Row and naval aircraft were lined up at various air stations. At 7:55 a.m. the first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived, and at approximately 8:10 a.m., the USS Arizona exploded. It would be the first of many explosions around the island that morning. The USS Arizona Memorial is one of four sites, collectively known as the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, and each has its own story to tell. They include the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum, Battleship Missouri and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor.
‘free pass’ days In tribute to the service and sacrifice made by America’s Armed Forces, the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites offers active-duty service members, retirees and dependents ‘‘Free Pass’’ days to celebrate the birthdays of each respective U.S. military branch. Paid admission will be waived for tours of the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum on Aug. 3-4 and Sept. 21-22. A valid military I.D. is required. Additional info is on page 120. THIS WEEK OAHU

It’s the same spirit that permeates all our local events. Join the fun and take the spirit of aloha with you wherever you go.
more than just shopping Many of Hawai‘i’s shopping centers offer weekly cultural performances and fun activities. O‘ahu’s large family attractions take learning out of the classroom and into real life. At the Polynesian Cultural Center, visit seven different villages and get to know a bit about each Polynesian culture while participating in hands-on activities. Visit Pearl Harbor Historic Sites for an in-depth experience of December 7, 1941, and learn how the U.S. responded to this tragedy. Kualoa gets you out onto the saddle, ATV or bus to explore an area that ancient Hawaiians considered a sacred place. As for Wet’n’Wild Hawaii, well, it’s just plain fun!
enjoy the sunny outdoors Hawai‘i’s nearly perfect, year-round weather makes it possible for all visitors to enjoy outdoor activities. Go hiking in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon. We love our tradewinds that keep the vog or volcanic haze—courtesy of Kilauea on the Big Island—at bay. However, when winds blow in from the south, there is an upside to the added humidity—gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. On those days, just sit back on the beach and drink it all in. Bring the camera too!

te mahana hiro‘a Tumu O tahiti
On July 12-13, Polynesian Cultural Center hosts the 14th Annual Te Mahana Hiro‘a Tumu O Tahiti, where both tamarii (children) and taurearea (adults) showcase their mastery of Tahitian dance wearing intricate, colorful costumes. Set amidst the lush landscaping and tiare flowers of Tahiti Village, the weekend kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. with the invitational division, featuring some of the world’s most skilled and celebrated dancers. Poised with incredible grace, many of them have won titles in major heiva (traditional Tahitian festivals). The competition heats up Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Pacific Theatre with the solo and group competitions. This portion of the competition is focused exclusively on the otea, the most widely known style of Tahitian dance. Marked by fierce and rhythmic movements, tane (men) are judged by their masculine style, while vahine (women) for their faarapu, or hip movements. Speed, grace, coordination with drumming, costumes, and overall presentation also play a role in who will be named the best in their division. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for keiki ages 5-11. Kama‘aina Annual Pass holders, full-day ticket holders, and keiki (kids) under age 5 receive free admission. Hula
Whenever most people see smiling hula girls with their flowing hand movements, fluttering grass skirts and flower garlands (lei), they quickly associate them with Hawai‘i. While the advertising images are beautiful, the deeper meaning of this Hawaiian cultural tradition can easily be overlooked. Historians generally believe that the hula originated centuries ago with the arrival of ancient Polynesians to Hawai‘i. Hula, performed only by males, described historical events and myths. It was also performed at religious ceremonies to honor Hawaiian ancestral gods and ali‘i (royalty). After Western and European contact in the late 1700s, some aspects of hula began to change as a result of the foreign influences. Today, there are two styles of hula performed: ‘auana (modern) and kahiko (ancient). For visitors who want to learn hula, many hotels offer instruction in the basic hand and foot movements. Whether you’re new to hula or have been to classes, the most satisfying way to experience this Hawaiian cultural tradition is to sway your body to its warm and embracing spirit.

A Hawai‘i vacation just isn’t complete without experiencing a lu‘au. Whether you’re a “novice” or returning guest, you’ll never tire of the aloha shared by all, the spirited performances and tables laden with delicious Hawaiian fare. Step off the bus and you’re transported into the Hawai‘i of yesteryear. The rush of Waikiki is beyond sight and sound, and all you hear are warm greetings of “Aloha!” set against the backdrop of a setting sun. Even if you’ve come solo or as a couple, you’re all now part of an extended family that includes fellow guests. The various elements that make up a lu‘au are basically the same—the uncovering of the kalua pig from the ‘imu (underground oven), perhaps some cultural demonstrations, a bounty of food and Polynesian entertainment that includes a fireknife dancer. However, each lu‘au has its own unique flair that sets it apart from the rest. You’ll have to experience them all to know which is your favorite—that’s all part of the fun! Just remember that casual attire is adequate, alohawear is the dress of choice, and elastic waistbands are recommended! •Ali‘i Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center— Located away Polynesian Cultural Center from the bustle of Waikiki, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a gem on O‘ahu’s northeastern shore. It’s well worth the drive as you take in the chiseled Ko‘olau mountain range, white sand beaches and neighborhoods along the way. The Ali‘i Luau affords visitors the opportunity to tour the seven villages, then with the sound Polynesian Cultural Center of the conch shell, it’s time to party at the lu‘au! See the royal court, enjoy traditional Hawaiian performances and an all-you-can-eat buffet. Even if you’re not a bred-to-shop kind of person, your family and friends would surely appreciate a nice gift from your vacation. This is the Japanese tradition of gift giving called ‘‘omiyage.’’ It shows your thoughts are with loved ones even while you’re away having a blast in paradise!
take hawai‘i home Alohawear, t-shirts, swimwear, rashguards, brightly colored pareo, beach totes, luggage, accessories and more are available in designs that say ‘‘Hawai‘i.’’ Anything and everything inspired by the Aloha State are available at local chain stores, unique isle shops and open-air swap meets at every price range. And don’t think aloha shirts or dresses can only be worn in the isles. In some states, aloha shirts are accepted business attire that easily go from work to after-hour play. So forego that starchy white!
edible treats Wasabi or garlic flavored mac nuts; soft caramel and a Kona coffee blend covered in chocolate; handdipped clusters of toffee, mac nuts, crisp rice and chocolate; guava mac nut cookies; li hing mui, cherry and plum seeds of all varieties; macadamia nut oil infused with chilis or herbs; chili pepper, guava or mango jams...all make great (and tasty) gifts.

All-natural kukui oil benefits the skin with its ability to relieve painful sunburned skin, as well as issues such as eczema and psoriasis. It’s a great natural remedy. THIS WEEK OAHU

USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL Pearl Harbor’s visitor center offers visitors two world-class museums featuring artifacts, historic newsreels and exhibits that depict events leading up to the surprise attack that launched the United States into World War II. Open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-954-8778. Ask about reservations for the USS Arizona Memorial movie and boat ride and the official USS Arizona Memorial audio tour. The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites also offers three official half-day and two full-day tours that combine the USS Arizonal Memorial admission with the USS Bowfin Submarine, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor. Reservations: 877-444-6777 or visit recreation.gov or pearlharborhistoricsites.org.
2. USS BOWFIN SUBMARINE MUSEUM Submarines were responsible for destroying over half of the enemy’s ships. Known as the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” the USS Bowfin SS287 served with great distinction. Wind your way through the sub on which the crew lived and worked. Learn how America’s 288 subs sunk more than 5.5 million tons of enemy shipping and hear the stories of our submariners. Open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-423-1341, bowfin.org.
3. BATTLESHIP MISSOURI MEMORIAL Having served with honor through three wars with a crew that spans three generations, the “Mighty Mo” is dedicated to preserving the experiences and memories of her former crew members and other WWII veterans. It was the last battleship ever built and the last to be decommissioned. Walk the decks and see the plaque that marks the site where the Instrument of Surrender was signed, officially declaring the end of WWII. Daily tours are available. Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily (to 4 p.m. in September), 808-455-1600, ussmissouri.com.
4. PACIFIC AVIATION MUSEUM PEARL HARBOR See rare aircraft such as a 1941 Japanese Zero; an F4F Wildcat; a B-25 Mitchell Bomber similar to the one Jimmy Doolittle flew on his 1942 raid over Tokyo; and more. Recent additions to its vintage collection include an F-14 Tomcat and P-40 Warhawk. Fly the Combat Flight Simulator for free; download a coupon from the website or pick up a brochure or ad with the coupon. Shuttle and ticket purchase is available at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center or at PacificAviationMuseum.org. Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-441-1000. THIS WEEK OAHU

Polynesian Cultural Center
An experience at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) in La‘ie is an immersion into the exotic cultures of Polynesia. It’s the one location in the state that closely depicts the traditions of Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga. - breath of life” “ha: Everyday, thousands of visitors learn what lies at the heart of these cultures through demonstrations, exhibits and hands-on activities at each respective village. This year, PCC celebrates 50 years of preserving and perpetuating these cultures. Visitors can anticipate either an annual cultural festival or special event each month leading up to a week of festivities, September 1-8. The actual 50th canoe tour anniversary date is October 12. Join the celebration and look for special events in the coming months. PCC’s roots began in 1948 when members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) started a hukilau as a fundraising event. Students aotearoa from Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i, then known as the Church College of Hawai‘i, learned Polynesian dances from the community, who pitched in to teach the students each culture’s distinctive dance moves. “Polynesian Panorama,” samoa tahiti a production of authentic South Pacific island songs and dances, was born. In 1962, more than 100 labor building missionaries volunteered to build PCC’s original 39 structures on a 16-acre site. Skilled artisans and materials from the hawai‘i South Pacific were brought in to ensure authenticity. On October 12, 1963, PCC opened to the public. Admission was just $1.50 for adults, children were 75 cents. See the renovated Hukilau Theater offering a high caliber, interactive theater experience. tonga An onscreen film will immerse audiences on a journey unlike any other. The Polynesian Cultural Center continues to evolve. More importantly, the light of aloha whether from a cultural or spiritual source, continues to burn within every individual. Combined with the spirit of collaboration and unity, all merge to create a consummate experience for every guest. ali‘i lu‘au

North Shore
The pace on this side of the island is slow and relaxed during the long days of summer. Big waves aren’t the norm unless there’s a strong storm brewing across the Pacific, so you’ll likely find conditions more suitable for snorkelers, scuba divers and swimmers. However, always check with lifeguards on ocean currents and heed signs. Looking for a bite to eat or some shops to browse? Leisurely explore Hale‘iwa with its cool surf shops and clothing boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, eateries and popular sweet shops. Check out Hale‘iwa Art Walk, 5-9 p.m. every last Saturday of the month. Meet the folks behind local shops, galleries, eateries and restaurants, plus enjoy entertainment, artists and sidewalk sales. North Shore Chamber of Commerce, 808-637-4558, GoNorthShore.org.
uLuibueno’s Mexican & Seafood Restaurant in Haleiwa Town Center (Map D:F13) serves up fish tacos and a host of other menu items for lunch and dinner. Cool off with the bar’s unique and original drink menu.
