UConn went 11-2 on SNY in 201011, 9-4 on SNY in 2011-12, and 12-1 in 2012-13. Today’s game is the first of five UConn games on SNY this season.



UP NEXT: UConn will open play in the four-game 2K Sports Classic, benefiting Wounded Warrior Project, against Detroit on Thursday, Nov. 14, at Gampel Pavilion at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by SNY. Detroit is the last non-conference team to defeat UConn in Gampel Pavilion, upsetting the Huskies, 67-61, in the second round of the 2011 NIT.

THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team plays its 2013-14 home opener against in-state rival Yale University on Monday at 3 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The game, televised by SNY, is the first half of a unique UConn doubleheader which will also feature the UConn women against Stanford at 7 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies (#18-AP, #19-USA Today) are 1-0 after opening the season last Friday with a 78-77 win over Maryland. The Huskies were led by senior guard Shabazz Napier, with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Senior Niels Giffey had 13 points and sophomore Omar Calhoun added 10. Yale also stands at 1-0 after Saturday’s 93-77 win over Central Connecticut. Sophomore Justin Sears had 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Elis.

XL CENTER OPENERS: UConn has won its first XL Center (formerly Hartford Civic Center) game of the season in each of the last 25 years. The last time the Huskies lost their first XL Center game of the season was against Virginia, 72-59, on 12/6/87. Under coach Kevin Ollie, UConn defeated New Hampshire, 61-53, in last season’s XL Center opener. Under former coach Jim Calhoun, UConn was 24-2 in Hartford openers, the other loss to Purdue, 88-70, in 12/6/86. Before Calhoun, UConn was 7-3 in Hartford Civic Center openers, making UConn’s overall record 32-5 in Hartford season openers. OVERALL IN HARTFORD: UConn is beginning its 38th season of competition in the XL Center, formerly the Hartford Civic Center. UConn played its first game in the building against Boston College on Jan. 2, 1976, and has played there every season since, with the exception of 1978-79, when the building was under repair. The Huskies have played 318 contests in Hartford, including regular-season and postseason play, and have a 233-85 record (.733) in those games. The Huskies went 95-65 (.594) against Big East opponents at the XL Center and 138-20 (.873) against non-conference foes. UConn, which has had six undefeated seasons in Hartford uncluding three in a row from 1993-96, was 7-2 at the XL Center during the 2012-13 season. THRILLING START: UConn’s 2013-14 season got off to a thrilling start with a 78-77 victory over Maryland before 12,687 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Huskies led from start to finish, but watched their 17point lead melt to two before senior Tyler Olander canned a three-pointer with 1:58 left. Maryland came within one, but three straight defensive stops clinched the win for UConn. Senior Shabazz Napier led the Huskies in points (18), rebounds (7), and assists (7), while senior Niels Giffey had 13 points and sophomore Omar Calhoun added 10. The Huskies shot 51.7 percent for the game,

handed out 16 assists and had 10 steals. EXHIBITION RESULTS: Led by 21 points and 10 rebounds from junior DeAndre Daniels, UConn sailed to a 93-65 exhibition game victory on Oct. 30 over Division II Southern Connecticut. Junior Ryan Boatright had 15 points abd 5 assists, while senior Niels Giffey also scored double figures with 10. Among the newcomers, freshman center Amida Brimah had 8 points and 5 blocked shots. On Nov. 4, the Huskies defeated Division III Concordia-Chicago, 98-38, as sophomore Omar Calhoun had 16 points and 7 rebounds and freshman Terrence Samuel had 10 points and 12 assists. THE AMERICAN PRESEASON LISTS: UConn senior guard Shabazz Napier was a unanimous pick to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team, while junior guard Ryan Boatright was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team by a vote of the league’s coaches. UConn was picked to finish second in the conference, behind only defending national champion Louisville. UCONN HUSKIES IN THE NBA At the start of the 2013-14 NBA season, UConn ranked among the top seven college programs in the country in current number of NBA players. Kentucky tops the list with 21 players in the NBA, followed by North Carolina (16), Duke (15), Kansas (14), UCLA (13), and UConn and Florida with 12 each. The Huskies will tie UCLA should 14-year NBA veteran Richard Hamilton, a free agent, signs with a team as is expected. The 12 former Huskies are with eight different NBA franchises, and total a combined 88 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn dozen are led by Ray Allen (Heat), in his 18th NBA season, and Caron Butler (Bucks), in his 12th NBA season. The 10 other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Emeka Okafor (Suns) and Ben Gordon (Bobcats), each in the midst of his 10th year, Charlie Villanueva (Pistons), in his 9th year, Rudy Gay (Raptors), in his 8th season, Hasheem Thabeet (Thunder) and A.J. PRESEASON TOP 25: UConn is ranked No. 18 among the AP Top 25 in its preseason poll tha was released on Thursday. It is UConn’s first appearance in the Top 25 since the Huskies were ranked No. 21 on the poll of Nov. 19, 2012. It is the second time in the last three seasons that UConn has been ranked in the AP Preseason Top 25, the fourth time in the last six years, the ninth time in the last 12 years, and the 18th time in the last 23 years. Eight of UConn’s 2013-14 opponents also appear in the AP Top 25 or ‘Others receiving votes.’ That number increases to nine if you include possible opponent Indiana. NAPIER ON WATCH LISTS: UConn senior

guard Shabazz Napier has been named to the preseason watch list of candidates for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award as well as to the list of the final 30 candidates for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award and the list of 15 candidates for the 2013-14 Oscar Robertson Trophy. The Cousy Award watch list includes 45 of the top point guards in the nation. That list will be narrowed to 20 in early February and then to a final five by early March and the winner will be announced on Championship Monday in Dallas. UConn’s Kemba Walker won the Cousy Award in 2010-11. The Senior CLASS Award, which combines on and off the court achievements, will be narrowed to a list of 10 finalists. The winner will come from a vote by the public and will be announced during the Final Four. The Robertson Trophy, awarded to the Player of the Year, will be announced the week following the Final Four. OLLIE CONTRACT: UConn head coach Kevin Ollie signed a contract extension on Dec. 29, 2012, that will run through the 2017-18 season. Ollie was named to succeed Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun on Sept. 13, 2012,

and had signed a seven-month contract that was set to expire in March. Ollie’s new contract went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013. CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn junior Ryan Boatright owns the longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 46 straight games. ALL-TIME LISTS: With 18 points against Maryland, UConn senior Shabazz Napier now has 1,257 career points, and has moved up to No. 30 on the Huskies’ all-time scoring list. No. 29 on the list is Denham Brown with 1,267 points. Napier also has 458 assists, No. 11 in that category. No. 10 is Kemba Walker with 460. With 42 more assists, Napier will become only the fourth player in UConn history with 1,000 points and 500 assists (Doron Sheffer, Tate George, Taliek Brown). game, as he scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win over SCSU. SEEING DOUBLE: In the final 2012-13 season statistics, UConn had four players averaging double figures. Shabazz Napier led the scoring parade at 17.1 points per game, followed by Ryan Boatright (15.4), DeAndre Daniels (12.1), and Omar Calhoun (11.1). CLOSER TO HOME: Last season, UConn piled up the frequent flyer miles early in the season by opening with a trip to Ramstein, Germany, to play Michigan State in the Armed Forces Classic, and following it one week later by flying to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to play in the Paradise Jam. This year, the Huskies will stay closer to home in the season’s first month, taking on Maryland in the season opener at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. A Look At The Yale Bulldogs UConn has a 99-year basketball history with Yale, dating back to the 1914-15 season, when the Elis captured a 26-16 decision. The teams have met 65 times in all, with UConn holding a 43-22 advantage. UConn and Yale have not met since the 2003-04 season, however, and have only played once in the past 16 years. UConn has won the last 12 games in the series, 19 of the last 20, and 27 of the past 29. The last win for the Elis against UConn came on Dec. 2, 1986, a 77-75 overtime win at Yale, in Jim Calhoun’s first season as coach of the Huskies. The Elis are coming off a 14-17 season in 2012-13, but finished the year on the

upswing, winning their last three games and seven of their last 10. Yale picked up where it left off in the 2013-14 season opener, rallying from a 17-point, second-half deficit to defeat Central Connecticut, 93-77, in the Connecticut 6, played at the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday. Sophomore forward Justin Sears led Yale with 26 points and 13 rebounds, but he had plenty of support from guards Armani Cotton (17 points) and Javier Duren (16 points). The Elis used 11 players and 10 of them scored. Yale shot a sizzling 54.4 percent for the game, 55.6 in the second half, when it outscored Central, 53-30.

ing the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regularseason championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. UConn coach Kevin Ollie accepts the Ben Jobe Award from Jobe, the former Southern University coach. 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas Eve,” said Ollie. “What a Christmas present that was.” Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach. Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be

all about, and when you say that, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy. Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.” Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
