He is only the second coach in league history to reach the 300 league win total (regular season and tournament games), joining Jim Boeheim of Syracuse.  Two Huskies earned a spot among the BIG EAST honorees announced Sunday by the league. Sophomore Jeremy Lamb has been named a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team. THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team advances to the second round of the 2012 BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship presented by American Eagle Outfitters with a Wednesday, March 7, contest against the No. 8-seeded Mountaineers of West Virginia at noon on ESPN. UConn, seeded No. 9, is 19-12 on the year, moves to the second round following an 81-67 victory over No. 16 seed DePaul Tuesday. It was the sixth consecutive win in the BIG EAST Championship for UConn, the fourth-longest streak in tourney history. The Huskies are led by sophomore Jeremy Lamb, who is averaging 17.8 points per game on the year and has been named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. The Huskies are 6-8 in away and neutral site games this season. UConn did not play a game at Madison Square Garden during the regular season. West Virginia enters the tournament with an overall record of 19-12, finishing 9-9 in the Big East.

UConn Basketball and the BIG EAST Championship IN THE BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP: UConn enters the second round of the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament with a 35-25 all-time mark in tourney play. UConn is a seven-time BIG EAST Tournament Champion, winning the title in 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2011. The Huskies have been the tourney runner-up three times, in 1995, 2000, and 2003. Last season, UConn became the only team to ever play five games in the tournament and, obviously, the only team to ever win five, on its way to the 2011 tourney crown. The Huskies are also one of only four teams to play four games in the tournament, turning the trick in 2000 as well as 2011. UConn is also the only team in league history to win both the regular season and tournament titles in consecutive seasons (1997-98 and 1998-99). UConn is 34-22 in BIG EAST Tournament games in Madison Square Garden, 34-18 under Jim Calhoun. The Huskies have a record of 27-10 when seeded better than their opponent, 7-14 when seeded worse and 1-1 with an equal seed as their tournament opponent. UCONN AS THE NO. 9 SEED: UConn is the No. 9 seed in the BIG EAST Championship for the fourth time in its history and is 7-2 as the No. 9 seed. The Huskies were the No. 9 seed in the 1988 Tournament, defeating No. 8 Providence in the first round and then falling to topseed Pitt in the quarterfinals. The Huskies stretched a 46-33 halftime lead to as many as 61-37 before the Blue Demons rallied to cut the margin to 70-61 with seven minutes remaining. UConn never left DePaul get any closer, however,

wrapping up its sixth consecutive Big East Championship victory, the fourth-longest streak in league history. Freshman Ryan Boatright contributed 19 points and handed out 5 assists in his debut in the Big East Championship, while freshman Andre Drummond added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots. Aledx Oriakhi (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Roscoe Smith (7 points, 8 rebounds) also made solid contributions. VS. WEST VIRGINIA: UConn has an 0-1 record in the BIG EAST Tournament against second-round opponent West Virginia. The Huskies bowed to the Mountaineers, 78-72, in the quarterfinals of the 2008 tourney. UConn and West Virginia have split two other postseason meetings --- West Virginia winning 77-71 in the first round of the 1963 NCAA Tournament in Philadelphia and UConn notching a 62-57 overtime victory at West Virginia in the first round of the 1988 NIT, which UConn went on to win. Overall, UConn has a 15-5 edge in the all-time series between the teams, including a 64-57 win this season at the XL Center in Hartford (Jan. 9). In that game, UConn rallied from a 5-point halftime deficit to win behin 25 points from Jeremy Lamb and 20 points and 11 rebounds from Andre Drummond. CALHOUN/UCONN AT MSG: Jim Calhoun will be coaching his 84th game at Madison Square Garden as Connecticut’s head basketball coach when the Huskies hit the floor against West Virginia. In his 26th year as head coach at UConn, Calhoun and his Huskies have recorded an overall record of 50-33 in games played at MSG. UConn and Calhoun have won eight championships at MSG—the 1988 NIT Championship, the 1990 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the 1996 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the 1998 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the 1999 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the 2002 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament Championship, and the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament Championship. Connecticut had a record of 6-16 in Madison Square Garden prior to Coach Calhoun’s arrival at UConn. UCONN IN THE FIRST ROUND: UConn has a record of 4-6 in the BIG EAST Championship First Round. The Huskies topped DePaul, 9771, in the first round last season and defeated the Blue Demons again, 81-67, in the first round this year. In other first-round appearances, the Huskies lost to St. John’s, 73-51, in the 2010 first round. In other first-round appearances, the Huskies fell to Syracuse, 78-65 in 2007, the Huskies lost to Syracuse in 2001, 86-75, beat Boston College in the first round in 2000 and lost to Pittsburgh in the first round in 1997. The Huskies made three first round “8-9” game appearances, beating Providence in 1989 and losing to Boston College in 1987 and Seton Hall in 1986. UCONN IN THE SECOND ROUND: UConn has played in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship only once, defeating Georgetown, 79-62, last season. The tourney has only had a second round since 2009, the year when all 16 league teams began competing in the tourney. UCONN IN THE SEMIFINALS: UConn has made 13 appearances in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament and has a record of 10-3 in those appearances, including last season’s 76-71 overtime win over Syracuse. CALHOUN TAKES MEDICAL LEAVE: UConn Hall of Fame UConn Coach Jim Calhoun returned to the bench on March 3 against Pittsburgh after taking a medical leave of absence to deal with spinal stenosis, a lower back condition that required surgery, which was performed on Feb. 27. Calhoun, the leader among all active coaches with 1,249 games coached, missed UConn games against Seton Hall (Feb. 4), Louisville (Feb. 6), Syracuse (Feb. 11), DePaul (Feb. 15), Marquette (Feb. 18), Villanova (Feb. 20), Syracuse (Feb. 25), and Providence (Feb. 28). Calhoun has missed 29 games for various reasons during his 26-year UConn career and the Huskies were 14-15 in those games. 46th player to score 1,000 points in his UConn career, finishing the game with 1,009. Lamb accomplished the feat in 72 games, the 20st -fastest to reach the plateau. Lamb was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, announced Sunday, and was named the USBWA District 1 Player of the Year on Monday. Lamb was named to the Final Four All-Tournament game last season and was an AP Preseason First Team All-American this year. SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Sophomore Jeremy Lamb leads the Huskies in scoring at 17.8 points per game. He has topped the 30-point mark twice and has scored at least 20 points nine times this season. 5 NIGHTS, 5 GAMES, 5 WINS No team had ever played five games on five consecutive days in the BIG EAST Championship, much less win them all, until UConn accomplished the feat in 2011 to capture its seventh BIG EAST title. It wasn’t too surprising when the Huskies, seeded No. 9, defeated 16th-seeded DePaul, 97-71, in the tourney’s first round, nor all that much of a shock when they eliminated No. 8 seed Georgetown, 79-62, in the second round. Everybody took notice, however, when Kemba Walker’s buzzer-beating shot upset top-seeded Pittsburgh, 76-74, in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Walker followed that with a spectacular 33-point, 12-rebound, 5-assist, 6-steal performance in the Huskies’ 76-71 overtime win over fourth-seeded Syracuse in the Friday night semifinals. Finally, in the title game of the BIG EAST Championship, UConn completed the fivenight sweep with a 69-66 victory over Louisville as Walker scored 19 points to set a tournament record with 130 points scored.

University of Connecticut Hall of Fame Head Coach Jim Calhoun has established himself as perhaps the greatest program builder in college basketball history. Now in his 26th season as head coach at UConn and his 40th year as a collegiate head coach in 2011-12, Jim Calhoun has now achieved acclaim as one of college basketball’s legendary leaders, leading the Huskies to the 2011 NCAA National Championship and becoming only the fifth coach in NCAA history to win three national titles. He also reached several other milestones in the notable 2010-11 campaign -- the 300th BIG EAST win of his career, his 600th win at UConn and his seventh BIG EAST Tournament title, more than any other coach in league history. Jim Calhoun’s college coaching career includes just two stops--Northeastern University in Boston and the University of Connecticut in Storrs. In 14 seasons at Northeastern, Jim Calhoun led NU from the Division II ranks to status as one of the nation’s top Division I mid-major programs. In 25 seasons at Connecticut, Jim Calhoun has transformed UConn from a regional contender to a three-time national champion and Connecticut now ranks among the nation’s elite college basketball programs. During his history-making years as head coach at Connecticut, Husky Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun has compiled an overall record of 624-241. Prior to 1986, Connecticut Basketball had posted just two 23-win seasons in history. Since arriving at UConn in the spring of 1986, Jim Calhoun has “averaged” 24 wins per year. He leads all active coaches with 1,249 games coached. In April of 2005, Jim Calhoun became just the seventh recipient of the prestigious John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching Award” presented by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Previous winners of the award include fellow Hall of Fame coaches Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski and Lute Olson. In November of 2006, Coach Jim Calhoun’s achievements were recognized by his peers when he was named a member of the Founding Class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Jim Calhoun was the first coach in the history of the BIG EAST Conference to be named BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year four times. George Blaney, a 2003 inductee in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, is entering his 11th season as a member of the Connecticut basketball staff in the 2011-12 season. He was named the Associate Head Coach in July of 2007. Blaney brings to the Connecticut staff more than 30 years of coaching experience. He was an All-New England college basketball standout at Holy Cross, scoring 1,012 points in his college career and leading the Crusaders to back-to-back 20-win seasons before graduating in 1961. Blaney was a fourth round selection of the New York Knicks in the 1961 NBA Draft and played during the 1961-62 season with the Knicks. Blaney began his coaching career as head coach at Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City, NJ in 1965. He moved into the college coaching ranks two years later when he was named head coach at Stonehill (MA) College. After two seasons at Stonehill, Blaney spent three years as head coach at Dartmouth College before returning to his alma mater and coaching the Holy Cross program for the next 22 years. While directing the Holy Cross program, Blaney led the Crusaders to three NCAA tournament berths, five invitations to the NIT, and a 357-276 overall record. Holy Cross posted seven 20-win seasons during Blaney’s tenure as head coach. In 1994, George Blaney joined the BIG EAST Conference and spent three seasons as head coach at Seton Hall. He departed the college coaching ranks to become Vice President of Basketball Operations for the International Basketball League in 1998. He remained in that post for two years before joining the University of Rhode Island as an assistant coach during the 2000-2001 season. In 30 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Blaney posted an impressive overall record of 461-383. Blaney earned two wins during the 2011-12 season. Born November 12, 1939, Blaney and his wife, Maryellen, have two daughters and three sons, along with five grandchildren.

Kevin Ollie is entering his second season as an assistant coach at UConn in 2011-12. He is a graduate of UConn who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association, completing his career in 2009-10 as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played for 11 different franchises in his NBA career, playing in 662 career contests. He was a two-time team captain at UConn and helped lead the Huskies to the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in 1993-94 and 1994-95, advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in those respective seasons. Ollie was an All-BIG EAST Third Team selection as a senior in 1994-95 and was named to the UConn Basketball All-Century Team in 2001. He stands No. 3 all-time at UConn in assists and No. 1 at UConn in assists in BIG EAST contests. Kevin and his wife, Stephanie, have a son, Jalen, and daughter, Cheyenne. Born December 27, 1972, Ollie is a native of Los Angeles where he attended Crenshaw High School.

Assistant Coach GLEN MILLER 9th Season at Connecticut Glen Miller is entering his ninth year as a member of the Connecticut Basketball staff under Jim Calhoun. He is returning to the role of assistant coach in 2011-12. He was the Director of Basketball Administration at UConn in 2010-11 and was an assistant for the Huskies from 1986-1993. He is a graduate of UConn, former basketball letterwinner (at UConn and Northeastern) and former assistant coach under Jim Calhoun at UConn and has spent the past 17 seasons as a collegiate head coach, 11 years in the Ivy League at the Division I level. He played two seasons at UConn and then two seasons for Jim Calhoun at Northeastern. He joined the coaching staff at Connecticut under Calhoun in 1986 and spent seven seasons on the Husky staff. He was named the head coach at Connecticut College in 1993 and spent six seasons in New London. He led Connecticut College to unprecedented success, culminating in a 28-1 campaign in 1998-99, advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four and No. 3 final national ranking. He left to become the head coach at Brown University in the Ivy League, spending seven seasons in Providence (1999-2006). He was named the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, leading the Quakers to the Ivy League Championship and the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07 and spent three full seasons and part of a fourth at Penn (2006-2009). Miller compiled a record of 233-209 in his 17 seasons as a head coach. Glen and his wife Yvonne have four children: Tony, Genelle, Jillian and Emma. Born August 20, 1961, Miller is a native of Groton, Conn., where he attended Fitch High School.

Director of Administration KARL HOBBS 9th Season at Connecticut Karl Hobbs is in his first season in the position of Director of Men’s Basketball Administration and ninth year on the UConn Basketball staff. Hobbs spent the previous ten seasons as the head coach at George Washington University. In his ten seasons at GW, Hobbs led the Colonials to unprecedented heights, capturing a pair of Atlantic 10 Tournament titles, one regular season championship and making five postseason appearances, including three straight NCAA Tournament trips from 2004-06. Hobbs was the 2005-06 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and compiled a record of 166-129 in his ten seasons. Hobbs spent the 1993-94 through 2000-01 seasons as an assistant coach for UConn, helping the Huskies earn five BIG EAST Regular Season titles, three BIG EAST Tournament crowns and the 1999 NCAA National Championship. UConn had a record of 216-56 in his eight seasons on the staff. A native of Roxbury, MA, Hobbs attended Connecticut where he was a four-year starting point guard, earning All-BIG EAST honors in 1983-84. He played point guard for the Huskies from 1981-84 and was captain of the team as a senior in 1983-84. He never missed a game in four seasons and started 104 of 113 games. He led the team in assists for four consecutive seasons totaling 534 assists. He currently ranks fifth on the UConn career assists list. He scored 900 points (8.0 ppg) and averaged 30 minutes per game during his college career. Hobbs, who played with Patrick Ewing and for Mike Jarvis at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in the late ‘70s, helped lead his team to the Massachusetts State High School title. He was named Massachusetts Schoolboy Player of the Year in 1979-80. Prior to joining Calhoun’s staff at UConn, Hobbs served as an assistant coach at Boston University for six years (1988-93). Boston University won the North Atlantic Conference title twice and advanced to the NCAA Tournament first round in two of Hobbs’ four seasons in Boston. Born August 7, 1961, Hobbs and his wife, JoAnn, have two daughters: RaShauna and Kaliah.

Assistant Director of Administration-- KEVIN FREEMAN 1st Season at Connecticut Kevin Freeman is in his first season as the Assistant Director of Men’s Basketball Administration at the University of Connecticut, joining the staff in November of 2011. Freeman is a former Husky captain and member of the 1999 NCAA National Champions. Freeman is the all-time UConn leader in games played at 140, No. 17 on the all-time scoring list with 1,476 points and No. 8 on the all-time rebounders list with 913. He was the Most Outstanding Performer of the 1999 BIG EAST Championship and was named to the 1999 NCAA West Regional All-Tournament team. He was a co-captain of the 1999-00 Husky squad and UConn compiled a 109-32 record in his four seasons, reaching the Elite Eight in 1998 and winning the NCAA title in 1999. He completed his degree in 2006. After completing his career at Connecticut, Kevin played 11 seasons of professional basketball, retiring after the 2010-11 season. He played in professional leagues in Italy, Australia, Greece, South Korea, China, Puerto Rico, Spain and Venezuela during his career. Born March 3, 1978, Kevin is a native of Springfield, Mass. and came to UConn after competing as an all-state high school performer at Paterson Catholic HS in New Jersey. Kevin and his wife Nicole have a daughter Kekoa and a son Sire.
