2012-13 Season outlook

2012-13 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field

2012-13 Season Outlook The 2012 season for the UConn men’s track and field program saw great individual success as three Huskies captured a total of five BIG EAST individual crowns, while senior Jake Waruch qualified for the outdoor NCAA Championship. Additionally, four UConn all-time records were broken throughout the season. The Huskies, having great success across the board, brought home their seventh consecutive, and 18th championship totle over the last 19 years, indoor New England Championship title, while grabbing silver medals at the BIG EAST and IC4A Indoor Championship. The 2013 season promises to be an exciting campaign for Connecticut with the return of 17 four-year and five-year student-athletes to compromise a senior leadership team replacing the traditional captain or co-captains. These athletes will lead their teammates to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the Indoor Championships, while the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships will return to Rutgers. There isn’t much variation from the previous year’s schedule. The Terrier Classic at Boston University replaces the Donohue Memorial in the indoor season. The regular season highlighted scoring meet will once again be the Sykes-Sabock Challenge at Penn State, while the Winter Opener at home and the Great Dane Classic at the Armory constitute the other scoring meets. As always, the Huskies will look to extend their dominance of the New England Championships while eyeing the IC4A in Boston the week before the NCAA Championship. The outdoors season sees a renewal of the spring break trip culminating in the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. Three home meets sandwich the Battle on the Bayou at LSU in the month of April. The Huskies look to advance as many athletes as possible to the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, N.C., while taking a shot at the IC4A in Princeton along the way.

Jake Waruch Multi-Events

Multi-Events NCAA qualifier Jake Waruch is the headliner for UConn’s multi-event student-athletes. Following back-to-back BIG EAST titles in the heptathlon and the decathlon, Waruch qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Waruch was forced to withdraw from the 2012 outdoor NCAA Championships after pulling his hamstring in warm-ups. That bitter disappointment has turned into a major motivator as he leads a deep and talented group. All-BIG EAST multi-eventers Jesse Chapman and Ben Waruch are stars in their own right and have aspirations at the national level as well. Redshirt sophomore Sean Walsh and dependable redshirt junior Sam Smith, a four-time BIG EAST scorer, will face competition from two freshmen. National Scholastic decathlon champion Kris Horn and New York State Pentathlon Champion Pat Meyer will look to make a name for themselves at UConn. Sprints and Hurdles Expectations are high for the school record 4x100 relay team (40.27) as it returns three legs and adds the Pennsylvania State 60m Champion TJ Elliot. Elliot will be joining senior anchor Jesse Drinks and junior Darnell Cummings leads a team that should include senior Kevin Smith. The high hurdles haven’t looked this good since the late 90’s as sophomore Selwyn Maxwell and redshirt junior Claudio DelliCarpini form a dynamic duo for the Huskies.

Tim Bennatan Mid-Disatnce

The long sprints show the best depth in a long time as the coaches will look for a leader to emerge from a group that includes Kyle Twombly, Tyler Hopson and High Point transfer Justin Doehr. Senior hurdler Chris Whyte hopes to fulfill the potential that has eluded him as he is healthy and strong heading into his final year donning the Husky Blue and White. Redshirt sophomore John Rettenmeier and Penn State transfer Dele Owoye provide depth and competition.

2012-13 Season Outlook University of Connecticut 2012-13 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field

2012-13 Season Outlook Throws Cody Unger, the 2011 BIG EAST javelin champion, has returned better than ever and will be backed up by Connecticut natives sophomore Brian Eilers and freshman Adam Boucher. Throwing specialist Eric Masington had a competitive breakthrough at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and is ready to lead the group in shot put and discus in 2013. Senior Josh Faboyede seems poised to have a great senior year as he had his most consistent fall, and is expected to get over the 65’ and 200’ marks in the weight and hammer. Sophomore Chris Ackell, a BIG EAST finalist in the hammer, has improved greatly and seems ready to give Faboyede a run for the top Husky in the hammer. Even though he is still a novice, redshirt freshman Tosin Edwards is the X factor for the UConn squad. Jumps Reigning BIG EAST high jump champ Noel James has shown himself to be imperturbable as he has adjusted to his fourth coach in four years, as associate head coach Rich Miller has taken the reigns in this event, while sophomore Toby Belton seems to be ready to break into the scoring column as James’ understudy. Multi-eventers Jake Waruch, Sam Smith and Pat Meyer will look capitalize on their limited forays into this event as well. A young group of horizontal jumpers has potential and will be brought along slowly. Sophomore Amanze Williams hit his big marks at the wrong times and looks to gain consistency. Pennsylvania natives and freshmen Harley Lacroix and John Landis have knocked heads in high school with state champ Landis

Josh Faboyede Throws getting the better of it in the long jump and LaCroix the triple jump. In the pole vault, BIG EAST runner-up Matt Alexander looks to cap off his career on top of the podium, while junior Cory Duggan will also vie for the top position. Both have personal bests over 16’ with potential to be well into the 17 foot range. Middle Distance BIG EAST 1000m Champ Tim Bennatan and the IC4A mile champion Joe Clark headline a mid-distance group that has depth and quality. Alex Bennatan was one move away from a conference title himself in the 800 and can range to the mile, while George Mason transfer Alex Levine scored as a freshman in the IC4A 1000 and looks to move into the mile as well. Sophomore James Agati was a BIG EAST scorer in the 1000m last winter and had a great cross country season, while junior Paul DeSalvo could be the next in a long line of sub 1:50 800m runners. Freshmen AJ Chavez and Robert Rhodes both ran 800’s under 1:51 in high school, with Rhodes finishing third at the National Scholastic while anchoring the National Championship 4x400 and 4x800 teams. Distance In the distance-rich BIG EAST, breaking into the scoring column is a formidable task. Senior cross country captain Ryan McGuire looks to do just that, as he and Bryan Fowler look to impact the Huskies competitiveness in the 3K and 5K events. Levine has shown potential to move up, while senior Jordan Magath is bulking up his mileage for a run at the 10k this spring. 4

Greg Roy Head Coach 28th Season University of Rochester ‘78

Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men’s track and field head coach, enters the 2012-13 season with a strong returning group of Huskies and a skillful incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Roy enters his 28th season as the head coach of the men’s cross country team and his 24th season at the helm of the track and field program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have produced a remarkable 260-41-3 record in dual competitions during his tenure, along with nine BIG EAST track and field titles. He has also produced 31 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including 2011 graduate Husky Michael Rutt. Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid foundation for the cross country and track and field programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year. Under Roy, the Huskies posted a solid 2011-12 campaign with Jake Waruch and Noel James each bringing home indoor and outdoor BIG EAST Crowns. Behind James’ outdoor and indoor high jump titles and Waruch’s decathlon and heptathlon titles, UConn finished fourth at the outdoor conference meet and second at the indoor. Additionally, the team won its seventh consecutive New England Championship. Roy guided the Huskies to one of their best seasons in 2010-11 as UConn earned both Indoor and Outdoor BIG EAST Championships along with claiming the triple crown of the indoor season with the BIG EAST title, New England and IC4A crowns. Roy was named the Northeast Region Indoor Track And Field Coach of the Year after UConn’s success. The Huskies saw Mike Rutt earn All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor seasons under Roy’s leadership. In addition to Rutt, nine Huskies qualified for the Outdoor NCAA East Regional. Roy and his staff were named the 2011 BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year accolades. During the 2009-10 campaign, Roy led his team to six first place finishes, including a fifth straight victory at the New England Indoor Championship and the first ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time since 2004 that the UConn men’s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplishments during the conference Championship. In 2008-09, Roy earned the first back-to-back BIG EAST Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and field team won the 2009 Indoor BIG EAST Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career. Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the 800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-American in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFCCCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the Northeast Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season.

During the 2007-08 season, UConn won the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Outdoor title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached six of his athletes to eight BIG EAST individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of BIG EAST Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot streak after the BIG EAST Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2006-07, UConn was unable to win a BIG EAST Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year. During the 2005-06 season, UConn won its fifth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last five years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of first place finishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy’s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular season. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional finalists, finished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his first NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and finished in 18th place. In the 2004-05 season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program’s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas advanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-consecutive season, but was injured during the competition and could not finish. UConn finished in ninth place at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also finished in a tie for seventh at the New England Championship. Outdoors, UConn finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship and third at New Englands. With Roy’s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump.

Roy’s squad captured its fourth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in 2003-2004, its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Championship. The team took second at the IC4A Championship and saw two of its members take home All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship as Will Thomas finished fourth in the heptathlon to become a three-time All-American and Logan Jones earned All-America honors in the 800-meter run. The Huskies took third at the Outdoor BIG EAST Championship and Paul Pisano became the first-ever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter.

The Roy File 1978 Graduated with a B.A. in geology from the University of Rochester

In 2002-2003, Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecutive year. Will Thomas earned the honor for a second time in the decathlon, placing second at the NCAA Championship. Thrower Paul Pisano also earned All-America status for the second straight year, as did Joe Mendel in the sprints. Mike Deibler earned his first All-America honor by placing eighth in the high jump. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title.

1979-80 -- Head Coach Thomas Stone High School (Md.) Cross Country/ Track & Field

The 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in Roy’s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the BIG EAST Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-American status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the first five-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson finished 14th at the NCAA cross country championship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fifth All-America title at the outdoor track and field championship, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel finished among the top eight in the indoor 400-meter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place finish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title.

1981-83 -- Assistant Coach University of Massachusetts-Amherst Cross Country/Track & Field

Along with a pair of New England titles in 1999-2000, Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place finish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson finished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9:33.85. Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The first 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA competition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fifth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy’s squads finished 81-5-1 in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding .934 win percentage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the 1999-2000 season, Roy had accrued five NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, 1993-94-Indoor, 1995-96 Outdoor, 1996-97 Indoor and 1998-99 Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-toback BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards (1995-96-Outdoor, 1996-97-Indoor). In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, finishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. UConn ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. The 1993-94 season marked the beginning of an 11-year winning

2011-12 season review

2012-13 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field (Staten Island, N.Y.) , junior Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Mark Fuller (Monroe, Conn.) all captured first place in their respective events.

2012 Indoor Season

The 2012 indoor season saw the Huskies enjoy both team and individual success as UConn captured its seventh consecutive team title at the New England Championships and finished as the runner-up at both the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships.

Three UConn student-athletes led the Huskies to a silver medal at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Championships as J. Waruch, James and Tim Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.) all were crowned individual conference champions in the heptathlon, high jump and 1,000m run, respectively.

Connecticut jumpstarted 2012 with a dominating performance at home claiming eight first place finishes at the Winter Invite. Freshman Amanze Williams (New Haven, Conn.) had a recording-breaking collegiate debut snapping UConn’s all-time indoor long jump mark with a leap of 7.61m earning him his initial first place.

Next up in the Championship season was the New England’s where Connecticut has historically found excellent team and individual success. This year was no different for UConn as the Huskies claimed their seventh consecutive New England Championship title behind the commanding performances of 19 top-five finishes.

The Huskies remained at home hosting the UConn Heptathlon where the squad took the top three spots with Jake Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) grabbing first with 5,078 points, while Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, V.T.) (4,929 points) and Ben Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) ( 4,786 points) placed second and third, respectively. The final Husky was Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) who finished fifth with 4,464 points.

UConn wrapped up the 2012 indoor campaign with a runner-up performance at the IC4A Championships where K. Duggan and Clark reached the top tier of the podium in the pole vault and the mile, respectively.

Connecticut rounded out January competition with six first place finishes at the non-scoring Yale Invite followed by a first place title at the Great Dane Classic in New York, N.Y. at the Armory Track. UConn concluded the Great Dane Classic with 13 top-five performances and took home the crown in the 4,000m distance medley. UConn took home its second consecutive first place team finish as the Huskies captured the 200m, 400m, 500m, high jump, pole vault and weight throw crowns at the Joe Donahue Indoor Collegiate Games. Leading the way for the Huskies was sophomore Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.) who finished the evening with two first place victories on the track clocking in at 22.52 in the 200m dash and 1:05.25 in the 500m dash. Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) and Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) led the team to a second place finish at the Penn State Sykes & Sabock Challenge. Cummings ended the meet with two top-five seats as he finished the 60 meter dash second and took fourth place in the 200m, while James grabbed first in the high jump earning himself BIG EAST Athlete of the Week. The Huskies returned to the Armory Mike Alleman for the Ryder-Lafayette Invite where seniors Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Kyle Duggan

2012 Outdoor Season The Huskies looked to build on their impressive indoor campaign as they opened the outdoor season at home in the UConn Spring Invite. The squad had a great start to the outdoor season posting 19 top-five finishes at the George J. Sherman Complex. Next up for the Huskies was a competitive Battle on the Bayou hosted by LSU where the Connecticut team would face top-ten squads. UConn saw great success finishing seventh with Clark claiming first place in the 3,000 meter run. Clark clocked in at 8:28.26 to set a new record in UConn’s record book for the outdoor 3,000m. Connecticut hosted back-toKyle Duggan back meets in mid-April starting with the Husky Decathlon where the home advantage was evident as J. Waruch grabbed first place with 7,579 points, while the team took first at the Dog Fight later that week. The team hit the road once again and brought home eight top-five marks at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invite, including the 4x100m relay squad leaving with a gold medal and Clark taking first in the 800m. It was then off to Philadelphia where the Huskies were slated to compete at the elite Penn Relays at the world famous Franklin Field. James led the squad with a 2.12m (6-11.5) leap in the high jump to conquer the title in the College Men’s High Jump Eastern. 2012-13 UConn men’s cross country/track and field

2011-12 Season review University of Connecticut 2012-13 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field The Huskies concluded April competition with an impressive outing at the UNH Invite where the UConn underclassmen were outstanding. Sophomore Claudio DelliCarpini (West Harrison, N.J.) earned himself BIG EAST Athlete of the Week after claiming first in the 110m hurdles, while Twombly notched another Husky title as he crossed the finish line in 49.22 for first place in the 400m dash. Freshmen Phil Caldwell (Cheshire, Conn.) and Williams also reached the top of the podium in their respective events. While Connecticut did not finish where they wanted to in the team rankings at the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, the Huskies had J. Waruch and James capture the conference crowns in their events. Waruch earned UConn its fourth consecutive title in the decathlon, while James was first in the high jump. UConn’s fourth place finish at the conference meet also saw eight events reach the podium. Additionally, Cummings took second in the 100m en route to breaking UConn’s all-time outdoor mark with a time of 10.38. Following the conference championship the Huskies headed to the IC4A Championship in Princeton where they tied for eighth place with 31 points. UConn, who entered the final day of competition in first place with 30 points, had its 4x100m relay team register its best performance on Sunday as they ended the day in second. UConn had nine Huskies in individual events and a relay squad competing at the NCAA Championship First Round in Jacksonville, Fla. Despite Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) and Cummings each having impressive performances on the opening day, none advanced past Thursday’s events. DelliCarpini was the lone Husky reaching the Quarterfinals where he ran in the 110m hurdles quarterfinals and finished 19th in 14.08 falling just short of advancement.

2012 Cross Country Season Review Led all season by junior Ryan McGuire, the 2012 Huskies recorded five - top ten finishes, including a ninth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. The season started on a high note at the UMass invitational where the Huskies took third place overall. McGuire led the team with a second place finish, four seconds out from the first place finisher. At the CCSU Ted Owens Invitational meet the Huskies earned their best finish of the season, taking second place. It was a first place finish for McGuire, with senior Jordan Magath finished second for the Huskies in fifth place. The Huskies captured 10th place overall at the New England Championship meet. McGuire crossed the finish line 17th and led the Huskies for the third consecutive meet. Junior Ryan McGuire was named BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the week following his performance in the New England Championship meet. McGuire consistently proved to be a leader for the team this season. The team got their only first place finish of the season at the Connecticut College Invitational. The meet was a repeat for McGuire and Magath, who finished first and sixth overall, respectively. The Huskies were led by McGuire at the BIG EAST Championship who crossed the finish line in 34th place, followed by Magath at 51st and sophomore James Agati in at 63rd overall. The team took ninth place. UConn had three runners compete at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. McGuire, Magath and freshman Ned Wilson ran for the Huskies. At the IC4A Championships, the final meet of the season, the Huskies placed ninth overall. McGuire was once again the first Husky to cross the finish line, placing 17th overall. Magath came in second for UConn, and senior Joe Clark was third.

The Husky 4x100m relay team ended the First Round with a historic showing as Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.) Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.), Drinks and Cummings concluded the race in 15th place with a new school record of 40.27. It was a disappointing ending to the 2012 outdoor season for the Connecticut program. J. Waruch was UConn’s lone competitor at the NCAA Championship and all signs pointed towards a promising finish before he was forced to withdraw from competition after pulling his hamstring in warm-ups at Drake Stadium.
