Head Coach Bob Goldberg 24th Season • Record: 322-119-3 There have been a lot of changes in Storrs, Conn., in the years that Bob Goldberg has been the head coach for men’s and women’s swimming and diving at the University of Connecticut. Perhaps none more impactful than the University’s new national ranking in 2011, moving it into the top 20 public universities in the nation according to the US News and World Report. “There are so many levels and categories of exciting things that can happen on a university campus, and achieving this goal has clearly been one of them,” says Goldberg. There is no shortage of excitement across the athletic department with UConn coming off perhaps one of the best years in the history of all college athletics in 2010-11; the football team played in a BCS bowl game, the women’s basketball program setting the all-time consecutive win record in all of NCAA Basketball, the men’s basketball team winning the incredible 11 season-ending games that resulted in a conference and NCAA Championship, baseball qualifying an NCAA Super Region, men’s track and field winning the conference championship and on it goes. Goldberg and his staff are committed to taking an already high quality swimming program that has experienced a great deal of success and bring it the right way to the highest level possible, “the UConn level”! Over the past 23 seasons Goldberg has consistently roamed the Huskies’ pool deck and there is clearly no drop off in his energy, goals and excitement for the program, the university and for the 50 or so swimmers in the program. With an overall men’s and women’s combined dual meet record of 324 wins, only 119 losses and three ties at UConn, the coach has the experience and attitude to back up his goals. “We want to be in a position to challenge for a conference championship and to find individual swimmers who want to work hard enough to qualify for and swim at the fastest swim meet in the world at the NCAA Championships,” says Goldberg. “These are the goals I have always had and work towards. The difference between us and some other programs is the manner in which we do things. We have a very strong emphasis on individual effort in academics along with individual responsibility both in and out of the pool and demanding that our swimmers have and display a high level of personal integrity. “As you look around, there are so many quality coaches, programs, teams and swimmers in the country, that there are not too many bad choices for committed and quality student athletes to make when choosing a school, but because of the way we approach everyday responsibilities, I feel strongly that the University of Connecticut itself, my program and our staff and swimmers’ perspective represent the best of all worlds that is available. I run a demanding program, but one that recognizes the outside demands that we all face I our lives.” The 2010-2011 season was a very strong season for the Huskies. The women posted a dual meet record of 7-2 and the men a record of 8-1, finishing the season with convincing dual meet wins against instate rival Yale. Throughout the season the teams posted nine new school records and had multiple NCAA ‘B’ cuts and far too many personal bests to even count. Couple their successful swimming performances with the accomplishment of both teams posting academic records that qualified them for CSCAA AllAcademics recognition made for an incredibly successful season. Goldberg has consistently run a program that expects each of the athletes in the program to assume personal responsibility for their training. “I want our people to be able to recognize what needs to be done both in the short term and in the long term. Anyone can see a need and can be tempted to jump on the ‘next best thing’ on the immediate horizon. I want our people to be able to see beyond that and to anticipate the long term expectations in the pool and the classroom and thereby budget their time, energy and resources properly in order to meet those expectations. This is not an easy skill when you are an adult, let alone a college studen… and

some take a while to learn that skill. But in the long run, it proves to be the best way to go in developing competitive athletes in the pool and competitive people in life.” Goldberg brings a wealth of experience to the UConn deck and he has experienced a great deal of coaching success in his career. He has 15 years of very successful coaching experience at Penn State, while also serving as an assistant professor in the kinesiology department. In his three years on the faculty at North Carolina State, he was instrumental in building an Olympic size pool as part of an expended athletic/ physical education complex. He has had national and international experience as a coach and has been part of aquatics at the highest level, having coached at the very first US Olympic Sports Festival in Colorado Springs in 1978, at the US Olympic Trials, at US Short and Long Course Nationals and the NCAA Championship. UConn has had swimmers qualify for and compete at the Canadian, Australian and United Statse Olympic trials, and has had swimmers compete in the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan-Am Games. At UConn, he has had national champions from Israel and Ireland, as well as YMCA National Champions and swimmers on National Teams from Canada, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Australia and Poland. In 1984, he was the coach of the US National Team to Rostock, East Germany. All the while, the focus from Goldberg is not on what he or his athletes have done in the past, but on getting the next great race from his swimmers. “It is wonderful to look back and remember what various teams and kids have done while working with them, but what really makes me get up and go to work every day and work with our kids, is trying to impart the feeling that they can each succeed, they can each reach some higher personal goals and find an extraordinary level of achievement in their personal lives, and eventually leave UConn with a feeling they have accomplished something special. That ‘special thing’ may be a time or a place in any given race, but it also may be a lesson in effort that will carry them forward personally to great things. Hopefully someday, they will have a 20-year look back at their time at UConn and feel that is was truly a great experience. In the stories’ end, I hope I will have had something to do with that!” Goldberg resides in Mansfield, Conn. with his wife Alyce. They have three married children; David and his wife Donna who live in Austin, Texas; Scott and his wife Amy who lives in Cincinnati; and Sarah and her husband Mark who live in South Windsor, Connecticut. Head Diving Coach John Bransfield 14th Season Currently in his 14th season directing the UConn diving program in 2011-2012, John Bransfield is coming off yet another successful season at the deep end. For the second consecutive year, the Huskies competed at the NCAA National Championship. Danielle Cecco became the third UConn diver to qualify for the meet, following a dominating performance at the Zone qualifying meet, winning both springboard events. Bransfield coached graduated senior Steven Ferreira to the NCAA Championships in 2010 after he won the Zone three meter event the previous year. Along with Cecco, also a BIG EAST finalist in two events, three other UConn divers scored at the Conference Championships. Five UConn divers qualified to compete at the NCAA Zone Championships. Bransfield has coached several national qualifiers including a four-time NCAA Division II Champion. In 2003, Melissa Kull became the first Connecticut diver to compete at the NCAA National Championship. Developing champions is not something new to the 2006 BIG EAST Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. In his 35 years of coaching, Bransfield has had many conference champions and at least one conference champion at each and every school that he has worked at, including Army, Maine, Springfield College and Northern Michigan.

Janelle Atkinson Wignall Assistant Coach Janelle Atkinson-Wignall is in her second year as an assistant coach at UConn after spending the previous four seasons at Wright State. The 1999-2000 National High School Swimmer of the Year, Atkinson-Wignall earned 10 All-America honors while competing at the University of Florida. She also received three First Team All-Southeastern Conference accolades, had three top-three finishes in three years at the NCAA Championships and was a three-time SEC Champion. Atkinson-Wignall was part of the 2002 team that became SEC Champions and was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll four times. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Atkinson-Wignall is a two-time Olympian taking part in the 2000 Sydney, Australia and 2004 Athens, Greece Games; finishing fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and ninth in the 800-meter freestyle in Sydney. In 2002, the Jamaica native won a pair of bronze medals in the 400-meter and 800meter freestyle events at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England. In 2001, Atkinson-Wignall claimed a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle event at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. She was a triple silver medalist at the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and took part in the 2003 games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She was also a seven-time recipient of the Jamaican Swimmer of the Year award and a six-time nominee for the Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year. Before coming to Wright State in August 2006, Atkinson-Wignall worked a year as a community relations officer for the Jamaica Information Services in Washington, D.C., and was an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University before that. On the international scene, Atkinson-Wignall was selected as the head coach for the Jamaican National Team at the 2009 Swimming World Championships in Rome, Italy. Atkinson-Wignall earned a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hospitality management from The University of Florida in 2005.

Cynthia Dumaine Assistant Diving Coach Back on deck for the 2011-2012 season with UConn diving for the third year, Cynthia Dumaine brings great enthusiasm and perspective. A former diver with a rich background, which includes a coach and legendary Sammy Lee, Dumaine comes from a family of diving. Her brother Jeff Huber is the head diving coach at Indiana University and she has been a passionate fan of the sport for decades. A successful owner of a business in Connecticut, she has a keen interest in the development of the college athlete for life through sport.

The diving squad this year will be led by the returning veterans, Danielle Cecco, Zone qualifiers Kelly McCauley (Captain) and Nicole Borriello, along with Grant Fecteau, a Conference and Zone finalist from 2010 who was injured last spring. Bransfield’s background extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving. He enjoyed many years of success with U.S. Diving as a Junior Olympic coach, and was the recipient of a stipend in 1988 to work with two U.S Olympic Coaches. In 1992, Bransfield was appointed as a Regional Technical Director of United States Diving, and while at West Point, hosted numerous clinics for U.S Diving Coaches. In 1998 he served as the Competition Manager of the Goodwill Games in New York. Bransfield has taught numerous coaching clinics for Grass Roots fundamentals, Spotting Training and Safety Certification and has twice served on the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee. In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’s Republic of China. The opportunity allowed him to closely observe the training programs at two Provincial sites and attend the Asian Junior Championships. Bransfield is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College. He earned a master’s at Northern Michigan University and continued to study biomechanics while at Springfield College. Bransfield and his wife, Ginny, have four sons, and presently reside in Storrs.

Tyson Hurst Assistant Coach Tyson Hurst returns for his second year with the UConn swimming and diving teams after a successful 2010-2011 season. “I am excited to be here for a second year and feel that the progress we made last year as a staff will only grow exponentially with this new class coming in,”says Hurst. He primarily worked with the sprinters, flyers and breaststrokers. Hurst also played a huge role working with athletes on stroke efficiency utilizing underwater videotaping and implementing progressive power-training regimens. His coaching career started off in 2006 coaching all levels of the Cascade Aquatic Swim Club in Redmond, Ore., and served as assistant at Redmond High School for three years. His collegiate career began at Indiana University as a volunteer assistant and he was part of two women’s Big Ten titles. Hurst was also involved with the Campus Recreational Sports administration at IU. Tyson received an undergraduate degree in education and a master’s in teaching from Oregon State.

Ilya Larin Assistant Coach Ilya Larin is entering his first year at UConn as a volunteer assistant for the swimming and diving teams A native of Russia, Larin started swimming at the age of nine and his collegiate career began at Saint Petersburg State University For Water Communication where he earned a degree in economics. He also swam for the Russian National Team, where he set a national record in 800-yard free relay in 2008. From 2006-2009 he frequented the podium taking home many titles including gold at an International Meet in Uster, Switzerland in the 400 free in 2008. He catapulted his United States career as a distance swimmer for Indiana University from 2009 to 2011 and earned his degree in arts and sciences. His first big showing in the U.S. came at the December 2010 Short-Course Nationals where he placed eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle. NCAA accolades include a third place finish in the 1650-yard at Big Ten Championships and 17th place at the NCAA Championships -- both in 2011. His accomplishments have earned him a spot in the Top 10 all-time at Indiana for the 1000-yard freestyle. He is the son of Klara Larina and Yura Larin.

he University of Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team opens up its 2011-12 season with big shoes to fill following a great campaign last season. A record of 8 -1, a great showing at the mid-season Terrapin Cup, a first-ever win over in-state rival Yale and a fifth place finish at the BIG EAST Conference Championship made for a successful season. The great news for head coach Bob Goldberg is that the cupboard is not bare. The graduation of UConn’s top backstroker Alex Davidson along with Tomasz Sobek and Tim Krompinger will be a hard loss for the Huskies, but there are returning swimmers and new additions that can help soften the blow. Starting with the backstroke events, the Huskies will rely on sophomore Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.). “Keith had an outstanding training year last year and made great strides with good times,” says Goldberg. “He is, however, even better than last season’s times indicate and will need to show that for us.” Piper can be a top eight finalist at the conference meet. Piper will have good support in freshman Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.), who posted a solid 1:48, 200 backstroke last year and will be a factor. Junior Sean Cook (Doylestown, Pa.) is on the verge of breaking out and as a junior will be a key. Redshirt sophomore Justyn Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.) has potential to score especially in the 100-yard. Senior Mitch Dansky (Wichendon, Mass.) can also be called on for help, especially in the 200-yard. The breaststroke was weak for the Huskies last year and two freshmen will be a key for this event. Freshman Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) has great potential in the water and great times from his home in Bulgaria to back that up. Rapidly improving freshman Wyatt Boliek (Greenville, S.C.) looks faster than originally thought and will certainly challenge for a top spot. Sophomore Asher Garcia (Pinecrest, Fla.) returns with a year of seasoning and will be very competitive. As a taper swimmer, senior Matt Connor (Ventia, Pa.) will be strong at the championships meets. The butterfly could be a real strength for UConn. All the “fliers” return including junior Nick Cerra (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), junior Joe Glowacki (Erie, Pa.), senior Nick Majtenyi (St. Catherines, Ont.), sophomore Chris Alvanos (Chester Springs, Pa.) and sophomore Ben Yacano (Glen Allen, Va.). Franz and Dansky can also be used in the 200-yard butterfly and sophomore Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.) and Garcia will be

competitive in the 100-yard butterfly as sprinters and for a relay spot. “The fly events can be a great event for us this year,” says Goldberg. Sprinting was a strong point for the Huskies last year with the men’s 400 freestyle relay posting times under 3:00 several times last year. Yoon, junior Karim Zayed (Montreal, Que.), Piper and sophomore Sean Battle (Allison Park, Pa.) all return and are all good. Pushing them for spots are junior Sean Cook (Doylestown, Pa), Cerra, Majtenyi and Shumkov. The distance events will also remain strong. Dansky, Alvanos, sophomore Zach Coleman (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), Franz, Majtenyi, freshman Luke Zalewski (Burlington, Conn.) and Zayed make up a formidable force. It will be interesting to see freshman Franz compete for the Huskies after posting very respectable distance freestyle times last season in high school. “If Sawyer is as competitive as he appears, that frees up Majtenyi and Dansky to swim in a lot of places. We immediately become a better team,” says Goldberg IM’s will also be solid as Garcia, Connor, Franz and Coleman fill in those spots. The returning divers on the team are junior Grant Fecteau (Delmar, N.Y.), who shows unparallel drive for success for the season according to head diving coach John Bransfield. He was injured mid-season last year and missed the championship season, but is determined to reclaim his position among the top divers in the BIG EAST Conference and score at the NCAA Zone Championship. Junior Anthony Cortright (Wallingford, Conn.) is coming off a successful first year of diving at UConn. Cortright aims to continue adding difficulty to his competitive list. With refined moves and increased awareness, he should score at the BIG EAST Conference Meet, and possibly test the water at zones. “Our team has a singular goal in 2012,” says Goldberg. “We are not resting for the entire season and totally aim for our best meet at the BIG EAST Conference Championship. We will hopefully advance some swimmers to the NCAA’s. Our relays also have a solid chance this season to make the NCAA cut. If this approach costs us a dual meet during the year we are prepared for that, but I think this team is competitive enough that we will rise to the occasion even unrested and be pretty good all year in regular season meets.” The UConn schedule is another plus in the eyes of the coach. The team has very competitive meets with Army, Pennsylvania, Colgate and Dartmouth and conference foes Seton Hall and Georgetown. Competing in the Pitt Invite in the BIG EAST Conference Championship pool is a plus, as is long course meets at Pitt and the US Nationals. UConn also has a great training trip to Puerto Rico again as in 2011. “Our schedule will prepare us for excelling at the right time. We are excited,” says Goldberg. Another plus for the Huskies is the current coaching staff. Returning with Goldberg, now in his 24th season at UConn, are Tyson Hurst and Janelle Atkinson-Wignall. “As second season coaches with the Huskies, Tyson and Janelle have a great perspective of where we can and would like to go. Volunteer coach Ilya Larin from Russia brings a new and interesting perspective to practice! We are happy with the current team, we are recruiting swimmers that can take us even higher and laying a groundwork for a truly competitive team on the national level. Our facilities are great, our university is great and the potential for the next 10 years is exciting!” Senior Nick Majtenyi serves as one of the this year’s Husky captains and will help lead a talented group of butterfliers.

ver the 23 years head coach Bob Goldberg has been at the helm of the University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team, they have had a record of excellence reflected by the quality of student-athletes in the program and the quality of graduates who have come out of the program. “I am so proud of the accomplishments of so many of our women swimmers and divers while at Connecticut and in the years after they graduate,” says Goldberg. “Someday I’d love to chronicle all that they have accomplished!” Leading the team this year is an outstanding group of six swimmers who have persevered over their years to become outstanding swimmers, role models and students. One of the most successful student athletes and swimmers on the team is captain and breaststroker senior Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas). Aiming for the UConn records and an NCAA berth is part of Gallagher’s agenda this year and she is capable of achieving both. In addition, she is in the prestigious UConn Honors Program. Senior captain Erin DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) is also set on breaking the butterfly records for the Huskies. This is an extremely personal goal, as Erin not only wants to swim fast, but the current 200-butterfly record is held by her sister Katie! Erin is in the challenging nursing major at Connecticut. There are two swimmers in this class who have their sights set eventually on medical school. Senior Samantha Cisneros (Garden Grove, Calif.) is an accomplished sprint freestyler and IM’er and senior Ali Aserlind (Coral Gables, Fla.) is another captain and backstroker. Both Cisneros and Aserlind, along with all the seniors, are heavily involved with the team study group sessions. Senior Ye Ling (Lake Worth, Fla.) is the current school record-holder in the 50-yard freestyle and can sprint most events. Finally, senior Chelsea Peitz (Fenton, Mich.) has had a great career at UConn, starting out as a breaststroker and now one of the team’s best butterflier. Not only is Peitz a team captain, but she has also been elected as the president of the UConn Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC), a post several swimmers have held over the years. “We are lucky to have experience this year in our upperclassmen,” said Goldberg while speaking of the seniors and juniors. “They have the experience and the desire to excel and can lead this group of women to good things.” Leading the way for the juniors is the school record-holder in the 1650yard freestyle Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Mich.) “Not only can Jordan race anyone in the mile, she is a sparkplug in every relay because she gives so much in a race… and she wants to be the anchor of the relay to win the meet,” says Goldberg. Still searching for that perfect niche is junior Mary deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.). “The problem with Mary is that she can swim everything and swim it well. Her range is the 100 to the

mile in freestyle, both IM’s and both butterflies. My job is to find the best spot for her and commit to those events,” says Goldberg. Junior Kate O’Leary (Brookfield, Conn.) is an emerging talent for the Huskies in breaststroke. She has chased very good breaststrokers for two years and now she is keeping up with them. Another junior breaststroker is transfer Devin Arch (Marietta, Ga.). “Having a full season with Devin will allow us to taper her properly for the conference meet and I think that could make her very competitive,” says Goldberg. Strong freestyle is also a part of this class with Kate Dobler (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Isabelle Nat (Barrie, Ont.). “Both Kate and Bella are quality swimmers who have shown consistent excellence in the pool and both should contend for spots on the relays at year’s end,” says Goldberg. Dobler has range from the 50 to 500 and Nat centers around the 100 and 200. McGuire Kelly (West Hartford, Conn.) is a strong distance freestyler who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery and hopes to be ready by mid-year. The backstroke event is well covered by Kim Fleming (Mississauga, Ont.). Last season, Fleming broke the magic two-minute barrier in the 200yard backstroke and hopes to challenge the UConn record this year. The sophomores are a small but critical class. Kati Kyle (Lithia, Fla.) is a beautiful backstroker who, when combined with Fleming and Aserlind, gives UConn a great backstroke team. “Kati’s 50 back on the relay and 100 back can be really special,” says Goldberg. Courtney Gregorian (Burlington, Ont.) has ability in both the butterfly events as well as many distances of freestyle events. As she becomes more aggressive in races, she can become a real force. Finally, Catherine Chang (Savage, Minn.) is a multi talented swimmer who can compete in the breaststroke and fly events but her best events are clearly the 200 and 400 IM’s. The freshman group has brought some good versatility to the team. Chin Pigot (Miami, Fla.) is a native of Surinam and has competed in the Pan Am and Olympic Games and brings some talent to the sprint events -- much needed for the Huskies. Holly Gallagher (Haddon Township, N.J.) comes from the rich background of the Jersey Wahoos and brings a lot of potential to the fly and mid freestyle events. Hanna Perna (Hillsborough, N.J.) will be a surprise to many in the distance freestyle while Kate Munzenmaier (Lake George, N.Y.) will also surprise some as she adjusts to college swimming and competes in the free and IM events. Caryn Smith (Huntington, N.Y.) comes from a great training at LIAC and can compete in backstroke for the Huskies. Talya van Embden (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and Sharon Scott (Shelton, Conn.) are working hard to become contributors to the Huskies. The UConn divers are a strength of the team under the direction of head coach John Bransfield. Junior Danielle Cecco (Hicksville, N.Y.) is coming off a terrific sophomore season, where she swept the NCAA Zones with titles in the one-meter and three-meter diving and advanced to the NCAA Championship in both events. A BIG EAST finalist on both boards last year, she looks to have continued gains in boardwork and entries and should be in the hunt again down the Championships stretch. Senior Kelly McCauley (Cortland, Manor, N.Y.) looks to finish her career strong. A consolation finalist her sophomore and junior years in the BIG EAST Conference Meet, she has the potential to make the top eight this year, as well as qualify again for the NCAA Zone meet. Junior Nicole Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) is very excited to get back into competition with a new outlook on diving and striving to reach her potential. Confidence will be key to Borriello’s success. The UConn women have been consistently good over the past many years, accumulating an overall team record of 150-56-3 in Goldberg’s 23 seasons and consistently have swimmers perform well at the conference level. They believe they can now climb to the top tier of the Conference standings with a true focus on the ultimate goals at the end of the year. With the coaching staff that is in place, the facilities and training devices that are available to UConn swimmers, and the challenging schedule that has been put in front of them, they are excited to begin the season and prove they are one of the best teams in the conference.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT WOLFF-ZACKIN NATATORIUM 2011-12 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

he Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. The 39,000-square foot natatorium provides one of the finest facilities on the East Coast. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are the only varsity programs housed in the facility. The Natatorium was built in part of the university’s $28 million Sports Center Complex, which also includes the 171,000-square foot Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, home to the UConn men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. It features several high-tech innovations making the pool one of the fastest in the region. The facility is a 50-meter “stretch pool” that includes two moveable bulkheads, allowing the pool to assume several different configurations. The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deepwater course in the Wolff-Zackin pool, featuring eight-foot wide lanes and a flow-through bulkhead. A second bulkhead provides an enclosed warm-up and warm-diving area, while also allowing for a separate diving area. The diving area includes two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards mounted on concrete. A dry board and trampoline with spotting rigs, and one and three-meter boards with rigs over the top makes for excellent training. Some of the other features of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium include a state-of-the-art Colorado Electronic Timing System V, men’s and women’s team record boards, a videotape replay system and an underwater viewing window. In addition, there are individual coaches’ offices, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms and visiting team locker rooms. The spectator area can accommodate 800 Husky fans. Adjacent to the Natatorium is Brundage Pool which is available to UConn coach Goldberg and his staff to enhance the Husky training program. Between the two pools, the Huskies have 18 lanes available to them for training purposes.

The $14 million remodeling of Connecticut’s athletic facilities included complete renovation of Brundage Pool, extending and expanding the great facilities UConn has to offer its swimming and diving programs. The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium houses a terrific training facility for divers on the UConn team. There are two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards on shorts stands, with a spotting rig above each level. On deck, there is a dry board and a trampoline, each with a spotting rig, along with two state-of-theart camera/Tivo systems and flat screen televisions for each side. As part of the remodeled athletic complex project, UConn swimmers have the use of a new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room, featuring all of the latest in strength and conditioning equipment. The Huskies also have daily access to a spacious athletic training facility with the latest technology for rehabilitating athletic injuries.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

he strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn swimming and diving athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. Each program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This format provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each swimming and diving athlete.

COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES

stablished in 1986, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) provides comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. In her first year working with the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs is Lindsay Darcy. Darcy recently joined the UConn staff from Manhattan College. Darcy earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for Linda Darcy the Orange field hockey team, and earned BIG CPIA Counselor EAST Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors and at the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Darcy monitors student-athlete academic performance, counsels individuals regarding major and career options, facilitates registration in courses that accommodate practice times while ensuring progress toward a degree, coordinator tutor support and assists student-athletes in the developing of learning and time management skills. The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team takes great pride in the academic and leadership accomplishments of its team members. The women’s team consistently has been recognized for academic excellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover (2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest award recognizing academic and athletic achievement and improvement, service, leadership, perseverance, and character). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last seven Kinsman Awards, with Craig Orski winning in 2003 and Bobby Folan in 2005 and Tristan Jones in 2007. Folan was also selected by the NCAA as the sole UConn representative to its 2005 Leadership Conference.

he Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic Catie Dann performance. The disciplines of athletic trainSports Medicine ing, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care. The team is spearheaded by Robert Howard, MA, ATC, the Head Athletic Trainer. Catie Dann, ATC, handles the day-to-day needs of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams for the fourth year. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Director of Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include: Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Thomas DeBerardino, and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

Community Service and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are highly-involved in the SAAC. The 200304 SAAC president was Kate Jelus from the women’s team. The 2006-07 vice-president was free-styler Emily Karel. The Committee consists of representatives from each one of UConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to community service, it promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The SAAC also holds an annual Talent Show for freshman studentathletes and an ice cream social at the end of each semester during the study period for final exams.

n Wednesday, June 29, 2011, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership joined with the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut, and Storrs Center master developer LeylandAlliance, LLC and their partner Education Realty Trust (EDR) in welcoming Mansfield residents and friends in celebrating the ceremonial groundbreaking of Storrs Center. Governor Dannel P. Malloy, United States Congressman Joe Courtney, Secretary of State Denise Merrill, State Senator Don Williams, State Representative Gregory Haddad, Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, UConn President Susan Herbst, and Mansfield Downtown Partnership Board President Philip Lodewick addressed the crowd of over three hundred who gathered at the intersection of Dog Lane and Storrs Road (Route 195) in Mansfield. Mansfield resident and current UConn student Spencer Hamlin performed the National Anthem to begin the ceremony. Following remarks from the visiting officials, the ceremonial groundbreaking took place near the site of the first building to be constructed as part of the future downtown. Storrs Center, which has been in planning and development for almost ten years, will be a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented town center located within an easy walking distance of the UConn Storrs campus, Mansfield’s Town Hall and Community Center, and E. O. Smith High School. The new downtown will host a wide variety of shops, restaurants, offices, and cafés, along with new residential options, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. The new, market-rate residential units will appeal to young professionals, empty nesters, faculty, graduate students, and other residents of the area – anyone who desires a quality lifestyle in an upscale town center with all of the social and cultural advantages found near one of the nation’s top universities. Storrs Center has been planned as an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable downtown that combines residential, commercial, civic, and recreational uses within a walkable area. Of the nearly fifty acre site, only about fifteen acres will be developed (twelve acres of which were previously developed). The remaining acreage will be set aside as a conservation area,

which abuts the Whetten Woods, a preserved area held by Joshua’s Tract Conservation and Historic Trust. An intermodal transportation center, adjacent to the new parking garage, will accommodate buses, shared cars, electric cars, and bicycles. Mansfield residents and visitors will have convenient access to many amenities without needing to make multiple car trips. The first phase of Storrs Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, will be located north of Dog Lane, near Buckley residential hall, and will include 127 apartments and 27,000 square feet of commercial space. UNIVERSITY OFPRESIDENT CONNECTICUT DR. SUSAN HERBST 2011-12 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

Dr.

Susan Herbst is the 15th president of the University of Connecticut and began her duties at the school in June of 2011. Prior to coming to her position in Storrs, Herbst was the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for The University System of Georgia. Herbst is the first woman to be selected as the University’s president since the school’s founding in 1881. In her position with The University System of Georgia, Herbst led 15 university presidents and oversaw the academic missions for all 35 public universities in Georgia. She worked closely with the system’s Board of Regents on all aspects of finance and higher education policy for the state. The system has more than 311,000 students, roughly 10,000 faculty members, and a budget of more than $6 billion a year. She had been with the Georgia system since 2007. In addition to those duties, Herbst continued to hold a faculty appointment as a professor of public policy at Georgia Tech. She is the author of many scholarly journal articles and books, including her most recent book about incivility in American politics, Rude Democracy, released in September 2010. Herbst was previously provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at SUNY-Albany from 2005 to 2007, and also served as acting president of the school for a year. She also served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University from

2003 to 2005. Herbst joined Northwestern University as an assistant professor in 1989 and remained there until 2003. There, she rose to become chair of the political science department and associate dean for faculty affairs. She received her BA in political science from Duke University in 1984 and her Ph.D. in communication theory and research from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communications in Los Angeles in 1989. Herbst was born in New York City and raised in the midHudson Valley town of Peekskill, N.Y. She and her husband, Doug Hughes, have two children: Daniel Hughes, 16, and Becky Hughes, 15.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a brand new $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the hall’s long list of inductees now includes UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. Once you finish your tour of the Hall of Fame, Springfield’s neighboring suburb of Agawam is the home of Six Flags New England, the region’s largest amusement park.

t has long been known as the “Insurance Capital of the World” and it serves as a daily busy hub for some of the most dynamic corporations in the nation. It also serves as the home for UConn football at Rentschler Field and a home-away-from-home for the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams at the XL Center. The City of Hartford, Connecticut’s state capital, and the Greater Hartford region are ranked highly for workforce productivity, accessibility, income levels, technology, education, the arts and heritage. Hartford is resource-rich with desirable residential real estate, communications, infrastructure, parkland and nature trails, health care and pubic safety. The city serves as the headquarters for several Fortune 500 companies, including United Technologies Corporation, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Aetna, Inc., and Northeast Utilities. Hartford employs seven time more people in the insurances field than the average metropolitan area. Hartford’s neighborhoods are diverse and historic. The central business district, as well as the State Capitol, Old State House and a number of museums and shops are located Downtown. Parkville, home to Real Art Ways, is named for the confluence of the north and the south branches of the Park River. Frog Hollow, in close proximity to Downtown, is home to Pope Park and Trinity College which is one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher learning. The West End, home to the Governor’s residence, Elizabeth Park, and the University of Connecticut School of Law, abuts the Hartford Golf Club. Sheldon Charter Oak is renowned as the location of the Charter Oak and its successor monument as well as the former Colt headquarters including Samuel Colt’s family estate – Armsmear. health and medical. Four of the nations Top 25 Companies For Executive Women, as recognized by Executive Female, are located in Hartford. The newest attraction in Hartford opened in 2005 with the debut of the Connecticut Convention Center — a $230 million, 1.6 million-square-foot convention facility that is one of a series of projects that is bringing new life to the city. One of the hubs of downtown activity in Hartford is the XL Center, which is also the home facility for the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League. Each year, the finest golfers in the world compete at The Travelers Championship, which is played at Cromwell’s Tournament Players Club at River Highlands and is part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

Consensus All-American Kemba Walker and the men’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship and made the customary trip to the White House.

ATHLETICS It was a remarkable year for UConn Athletics in 2010-2011. The men’s basketball team won its third NCAA Championship in school history and, in the process, UConn became the first school to ever advance to a BCS bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four in the same academic year. UConn sponsors a total of 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won 11 national championships since 1990 and has won 100 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships.

Danielle Cecco became the first UConn’s women’s diver in history to qualify for an NCAA Championship.

The UConn men’s track and field team hit the “BIG EAST Double” as it won both the indoor and outdoor championships.

The fall of 2010 was highlighted by three UConn teams all taking part in NCAA Championship action – the field hockey (quarterfinals), men’s soccer and women’s soccer squads. All-American George Springer and the UConn baseball team won the NCAA Clemson Regional and advanced to the program’s first-ever Super Regional.

All-American Jordan Todman and the football team won the BIG EAST Championship and played in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – UConn’s firstever BCS game.

National Player of the Year Maya Moore and women’s basketball team set the all-time record for most consecutive wins in college basketball history and later in the season advanced to its fourth-straight final four.

Trisha-Ann Hawthorne earned All-America honors in the 60-meter dash as the women’s track and field team enjoyed one of their finest seasons ever.

he sights and sounds of more than a century of intercollegiate athletics competition come alive during a visit to the J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum. Located in the new and expanded UConn Alumni Center in the heart of the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs, the Husky Heritage Sports Museum is the ultimate library documenting the wide-ranging successes of Connecticut’s athletic programs. The state-of-the-art design and layout of the 2,700 square foot Husky Heritage Sports Museum, named after benefactor and 1940 Connecticut basketball and football captain J. Robert (Bob) Donnelly (shown above with wife M.J.), vividly captures all of the energy, excitement and enthusiasm that is associated with “Huskymania”. Donnelly passed away on Sept. 26, 2005. The visitors’ UConn experience begins with the University of Connecticut “National Champions” Gallery. This unique museum addition, located in the entrance foyer of the Husky Heritage Sports Museum, was unveiled in December of 2004 and will serve as a permanent tribute to all University of Connecticut varsity teams that climbed to the mountaintop and earned the right to be called National Champions. Currently, a total of 13 national champion squads, representing four different UConn sports, have team photos and national championship logos on display in the National Champions gallery. Included in the National Champions Gallery is the unbeaten 1948 men’s soccer team of Coach John Squires, the 1981 and 1985 UConn women’s field hockey teams of Coach Diane Wright, the 1981 men’s soccer team of Coach Joe Morrone, the 2000 men’s soccer team of Coach Ray Reid, the six national championship women’s basketball teams of Coach Geno Auriemma (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009), and the 1999, 2004 and 2011 UConn men’s basketball teams of Coach Jim Calhoun. Upon entering the Husky Heritage Sports Museum, visitors are greeted by a full figure statue of Jonathan, the legendary mascot of all Husky athletic teams. Oversized banners proudly hang from the ceiling, displaying action images that feature 88 of Connecticut’s All-American stars representing 17 different intercollegiate sports. A tour of the various sections of the Husky Heritage Sports Museum is a walk down memory lane for long-time followers of Connecticut athletics. For fans just becoming acquainted with UConn’s tradition of excellence, the various themes and areas of the museum, when woven together, narrate a complete and compelling sport-by-sport story line. The growth and development of Connecticut athletics is traced via text, photographs and select artifacts from its humble beginnings in the 1890s to its present day ranking among the elite major college athletic programs in the nation. Included among the “must see” memorabilia in the Husky Heritage Sports Museum main concourse are the 1981 and 2000 NCAA National Championship Men’s Soccer trophies; the 1981 and 1985 NCAA National Championship Women’s Field Hockey

trophies; the 1950s era baseball gloves belonging to Connecticut’s three Dropo brothersincluding Walt Dropo’s first baseman’s mitt when he was the American League Rookie of the Year with the Boston Red Sox in 1950; the 1935 Ramnapping Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Connecticut-Rhode Island football game; a 1931 football signed by the entire Connecticut squad; team photos of Connecticut’s first men’s (1901) and women’s (1902) basketball squads; and the Waterford Crystal NCAA National Championship trophies won by UConn Women’s Basketball (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010) and UConn Men’s Basketball (1999, 2004). The pinnacle achievement of UConn’s eight NCAA National Championships in both men’s and women’s basketball is preserved and promoted in a unique circular sanctuary–the Connecticut Basketball Rotunda, a gift of Herb and Marcia Dunn. Championship trophies and related artifacts that chronicle UConn’s men’s and women’s national titles are prominently featured in the rotunda, as are life-size cutouts of Husky All-American stars Ray Allen and Rebecca Lobo. Celebratory paintings of head coaches Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma are on display along with a one-of-a-kind watercolor team photo of the 25-member UConn Men’s Basketball All-Century team. Also within the Husky Heritage Sports Museum experience is a video wall featuring a 65-inch high definition television. Visitors can view numerous historical moments in UConn history as captured on a variety of highlight films and documentaries. Each display case of memorabilia and every historical photograph located within the walls of the J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum describe a portion of a truly remarkable story. That story of the teams, the coaches, and student-athletes who have been part of the rich history that constitutes the University of Connecticut athletic experience is now being told on a daily basis at UConn’s Husky Heritage Sports Museum. The J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum is open free of charge to the general public during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) of the UConn Alumni Center. Since the Husky Heritage Sports Museum opened in January of 2002, several important artifacts have been donated from UConn loyalists to help expand the scope of the Connecticut Athletics storyline. The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics continues to seek additional memorabilia/artifacts to help expand the story of the UConn Huskies.
