George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex The University of Connecticut lacrosse program plays its home games at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, a $3.7 million athletic facility located adjacent to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the heart of UConn’s main campus in Storrs. The 2007 season marked the first year that the Huskies played all their games on the turf, after years of splitting time at the grass field in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. A financial gift of more than $650,000 to UConn’s Athletic Development Fund by Lottie K. Sherman of West Hartford helped provide the necessary funding for the project. The entire complex bears the name of Lottie K. Sherman’s husband, George J. Sherman. Opened during the 1995-96 academic year, the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex features a new Astroturf 12 field and watering system that was installed during the summer of 2008. The new surface gives UConn lacrosse and field hockey programs one of the finest on-campus collegiate facilities in the nation. The complex also includes an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track surface, as well as seating for 2,000 fans, full-field lighting to permit night games, a press box and a scoreboard with electronic message capabilities. Before the start of the 2010 season the lacrosse locker room in the Hugh S. Greer Field House was renovated, giving each student-athlete their own locker with enclosed storage spaces.
Hugh S. Greer Mark R. Shenkmen & Field House Training Center Weight Room Thanks to alumnus Mark R. Shenkman, the University of Connecticut has joined the ranks of major universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that is utilized by all the varsity sport teams and also by recreational services. The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the country. Featuring a 120-yard long state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area and state-of-the-art video capabilities, the indoor training center provides all the varsity teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment. The UConn lacrosse team has the use of two different weight rooms in Gampel Pavilion along with the Field House Weight Room. All of the facilities feature custom made multi-use racks with platforms, dumbbell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.
HEADStrong Foundation The Huskies were one of 15 teams to raise $42,000 in the 2nd Annual Nick Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic which took place at Hofstra University on September 25, 2010. The tournament helps bring awareness to the HEADStrong Foundation which is committed to finding a cure for all blood cancers and supporting those who are affected by the disease. The foundation is dedicated to its founder Nicholas Colleluori and was started in 2005, with the foundation’s primary color of lime green being used to represent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Friends Of Jaclyn UConn once again participated in a Friends of Jaclyn event, competing in the FOJ Playday that was held back in October. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that works to improve the life of children suffering from pediatric brain tumors and their families, while also helping raise funds for research.
Huskies In The Community Husky Reach The University of Connecticut lacrosse team strives to consistently make a positive impact off the field and outside of the classroom, contributing to several community organizations. Different community service initiatives that the Huskies participate in throughout the year include Nutmeg Big BrothersBig Sisters, teaching children around Connecticut about lacrosse, and volunteering for Husky Sport, a program to promote physical fitness and good nutrition. As part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee the lacrosse team also sponsors a variety of collection drives for food, toys and coats to support charities in the local area.

Katie Woods enters her fist season at the helm of the University of Connecticut lacrosse team, bringing with her a knowledge and love for the game that will help guide the Huskies to a successful 2011 campaign. Woods comes to UConn after serving in the same role for the past four years at American University. During her time at American, the Eagles collected 23 all-conference selections, five Patriot League Player of the Year honors and 72 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades. Following the 2008 season Woods was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 5-1 record in league play and a share of the regular season championship. In 2007, her first season as head coach at American, Woods led the Eagles to a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2003 and matched the record for most victories for a first-year head coach. Woods amassed 26 wins in four seasons as head coach at American including 12 in league play, and led her team to the championship game of the Patriot League tournament during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Before Woods joined the American coaching staff she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Brown University in 2005 and `06. At Brown she coached the offensive unit and assisted in coaching the goalkeepers. Woods oversaw the recruiting operations for all prospective student-athletes and served as the area recruiting coordinator for the New England region. During the 2004 season Woods was the first assistant at Cornell where she worked with the attack and aided in player development. With the Big Red she also planned team travel and was responsible for recruiting and film breakdown. Prior to her time at Cornell, Woods served as an assistant coach at Davidson for the 2003 season where she helped plan practices and organized recruiting efforts in addition to coaching during contests. Woods also spent a year at Ithaca College in 2002 as a graduate assistant coach for both women’s soccer and lacrosse. While at Ithaca, she earned her master’s in exercise and sports sciences. Woods was a two-sport athlete at Drew, where she played lacrosse and soccer. She was a four-time AllConference selection in lacrosse, also picking up two Regional All-American and one National All-America award. Woods also excelled in the classroom as a twotime Scholar Athlete award winner. She graduated with a degree in psychology in May 2001. Woods is a 1997 graduate of South Windsor High School where she played soccer, basketball and lacrosse.

Melynda Zwick is entering her third season as an assistant coach with the UConn lacrosse team and continues to guide the Huskies with her knowledge of the game as well as her knowledge of all BIG EAST opponents. Prior to joining the UConn coaching staff in 2008 Zwick was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. While at UMass, Zwick led her team to two Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances. During her senior year, she captained her team to the final game of the A10 tournament. Over her career, she tallied 100 total points on 60 goals and 40 assists compiling 11 multi-goal games, 17 multi-point games and five hat tricks. During her junior and senior years, she ranked second on the team in points as well as the third-leading scorer. Zwick has spent her summers throughout her collegiate and coaching careers working at a variety of lacrosse camps, most recently working at the Northwestern lacrosse camp and the 180 Lacrosse School in Amherst, Mass. She has also served as a first assistant to the camp director at the Nike Lacrosse Camp in Lawrenceville, N.J. where she planned activities and set up a daily schedule for all of the campers. In her home state of Pennsylvania, she has assisted at numerous high school camps as an assistant camp director for the last seven years, while providing guidance for participants aged eight to 17.

Julia Southard begins her first season as an assistant coach with the UConn lacrosse program after serving in the same role for the past five years, most recently at the University of California, Berkeley. While at UC-Berkeley, Southard focused on individual skill development while working primarily with the defensive unit and the goalkeepers. In her final year, she assisted the head coach with the midfield development as well. She played an active role in all aspects of game preparation, including scouting opponents and film breakdown. Off the field, Southard was the recruiting coordinator for the Golden Bears and was responsible for bringing in two of the top recruiting classes in program history. On the academic side, she was responsible for maintaining the academic progress of each team member. Throughout her time at Berkeley, she organized various community service projects and oversaw all aspects of team-community involvement. Southard was a four-year varsity letterwinner and a three-year starter for the Bears, earning All-Ivy League Second Team honors as a goalkeeper during her senior year.
Zwick graduated in 2008 from UMass with a bachelor of science degree in natural science of geology, earth track.

2011 Season Preview The University of Connecticut lacrosse team enters the 2011 season hoping to build off of last year’s success and feed off of first year head coach Katie Woods’ excitement for the upcoming year. With 22 letterwinners returning and seven talented freshmen, the Huskies are poised to make a jump in the BIG EAST standings this season. “This season, we are definitely looking to build off of last year’s success and turn it into a team game,” Woods said. “For us, the most exciting piece is that everything is new and we really are basing it around a team. We are going to use as many people as we can in our game plan and try to focus on the entire game, not just parts of it.”
ATTACK
The Huskies will have a deep offense to work with this season as four of UConn’s seven top scorers from last year return in M.E. Lapham, Kiersten Tupper, senior captain Lauren Sparks and Jordan Christopher. Also returning on the UConn attack for 2011 are Chelsea Hauswirth, senior captain Lauren Gunning, Stefanie Burra, Katie Parker and Shannon Kerr who add experience and knowledge to the Huskies’ offensive side. “We want every single person to be a threat on attack. Whether it’s a feeder, a shooter or any other part of our offense,” Woods said. “There are certain people that we will look to, but for the most part we are hoping that all of our attackers will be contributors so that we have a really balanced attack this season.” This veteran group, that posted 94 goals and 36 assists last year, will be joined by just one newcomer as Janet Tela joins the Huskies as an attacker for the upcoming season. Throughout the fall schedule and during the preseason tournaments, UConn has shown a chemistry among the attackers that will help the Huskies when it comes to the BIG EAST portion of the 2011 schedule. “All nine attackers that we have this season have the potential to do damage against any opponent,” Woods said. “Chelsea has really good vision when she is on the field which we will use a lot this year and Shannon is just a spitfire on the attack, giving us multiple options to run our offense with. M.E. and Kiersten are the main returners for us, but I am also excited about what Lauren Gunning and Stefanie will bring to the field. Gunning and Burra combined with Parker will bring experience to the offense, which will be a big advantage for the underclassmen going in to the year.”
MIDFIELD
The duo of Sparks and Christopher form the base of the UConn midfield as four others also return to the line-up this season. Those returnees include Catherine Gross, Mackenzie Rainone, Morgan O’Reilly and Liz Brown. The veteran midfielders, aside from Sparks and Christopher, notched 12 goals last season and will be crucial from both an offensive and defensive standpoint. “Lauren is our rock in the midfield and we will rely on her a lot to be a part of both sides of the game and really bring the midfield together. Jordan has a lot of playing experience and she will be a dominant force for us on the attack and in the midfield,” Woods said. “The other returners, like Morgan and Cat are the emotional leaders of the team. They are always getting everyone fired up and they are always communicating with their teammates, which will be a huge positive for us this season. Kenzie is a feisty middie who is also becoming a force on both sides of the ball.” Joining the Husky midfield for the 2011 season are freshmen Kacey Pippitt and Lauren Kahn. Both bring with them a knowledge and skill set that will help them make an immediate impact on the field for the Huskies. “These two freshmen are going to be phenomenal for this program,” Woods said. “Kahn is a fast player and knows how to put the ball away and is also figuring out how to work with the defense. Pippitt is coming off an injury from the fall, but she is definitely transitioning to the college game really well.”
DEFENSE
The Huskies welcome back eight members of a strong UConn defense from last season, including senior captain Jessica Mucci. Joining her on the defensive end of the field will be Megan Lally, Stephanie Norton, Dorian Gilmartin-Dzitko, Kelsi Tucci, Kaitlyn Aldrich, Kacie Lewis and Colleen DeRonda. Last season, the Husky defense held their opponents to just 11.0 goals per game, while recording 19 caused turnovers and 65 ground balls. “We have a ton of defenders to rely on this season, but Mucci will be the core of our defense,” Woods said. “Norton, Lally and Tucci will help her run the defense, as Lally is stepping up as a vocal leader for us and Tucci is a solid all around defender.” Three newcomers will join the Husky defense this season, with Maia Czarnecki, Karlyn Tupper and Siobhan Wilcox joining the line-up. With the graduation of veteran goalie Jenna Moulton, the Huskies will depend on sophomore Brittney Testa and freshman Kelsey Zinck to protect the goal this season, and both are ready to step up to the challenge. “For us, this season will be one game at a time,” Woods said. “Every game we play, we will be getting stronger as a team because we are practicing and playing with each other that much more. The season will be about support, accountability and connecting as a team. If we do that, I believe we can have a great season.”

2010 Season Review The 2010 Connecticut lacrosse team matched the program’s best start, rattling off six-straight wins following a 10-goal season-opening loss. Redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides concluded her career with an outstanding final season as the team leader with a career-best 47 points from 33 goals and 14 assists. She was acknowledged with not only a spot on the IWLCA North All-Star roster, but IWLCA All-Region Second Team Honors following her final season with the Huskies. Mitchelides was one of 128 Division I student-athletes honored by the IWLCA. Mitchelides had a strong supporting cast with a balanced offense that saw six players finish the season with 20 or more points, including a pair of attackers who followed up break out freshman campaigns with solid sophomore seasons. Sophomore M.E. Lapham and Kiersten Tupper were once again instrumental in the offensive success of the Huskies as each finished the 2010 year with 41 points. Lapham led all with 36 goals, including a trio of gamewinners. Tupper resumed her role as the team’s front runner with 21 assists. Redshirt junior Lauren Sparks returned to the lacrosse field after taking the 2009 season off and seamlessly inserted herself into the lineup. Much like many of her teammates, Sparks also had a career year in 2010 with 27 goals and eight assists. Her 35 points narrowly edged junior Jillian Cerar who made a marked improvement from a season ago, scoring 28 goals and adding six assists. Senior Katie Devaney earned a spot in the starting lineup as the season progressed, starting the final six games due in part to the loss of Lapham, and responded with a 12-goal and nine-assist effort in her final season in an UConn uniform. The remainder of the Husky offense came from a talented freshman class who will undoubtedly put their rookie lessons to use in the future. In total, seven freshmen scored throughout the season with classmates Jordan Christopher and Chelsea Hauswirth rounding out the team leaders in scoring with 10 and nine points, respectively. While the presence of a consistent and balanced offense led the Huskies to success, UConn relied upon senior netminder Jenna Moulton, who much like Mitchelides and Devaney used her experience to be an impact player for the 9-8 Huskies. Moulton was the deciding goalie in every game, playing over 1,000 minutes in the cage. She recorded a career-best 11.40 goals-against average and tied her personal best of nine wins. Moulton led the team with 40 ground balls and was one of two players to cause a team-best 11 turnovers. During the six game winning streak, Moulton and the Huskies’ defense held their opponents to fewer than 10 goals in five games. It all started with a 17-7 victory over Iona in UConn’s second game of the regular season and second of a season-long four-game homestand at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. Lapham, Mitchelides and Sparks all recorded hat tricks while it was Tupper who led the team in scoring; dishing a game-high four assists. She finished the game with six points while Lapham netted two of her goals on free-position opportunities. UConn opened the Canisius game with a 10-goal run and never looked back, holding the Golden Griffs to five goals – the fewest goals the Huskies allowed an opponent to score all season. Moulton notched the first of what would be five games with 10 or more saves against Canisius. Tupper started the run less than three minutes in and it did not end until the four-minute mark of the first half. Freshmen Morgan O’Reilly, Catherine Gross and Mackenzie Rainone all scored the first goals of their collegiate careers in the Feb. 28 game. Devaney came off the bench in the Quinnipiac game on March 3 and was instrumental in the convincing 16-8 victory over the intra-state rival. She was one of three UConn players to finish the game with four points, recording career-best three assists. Devaney added a goal while Cerar recorded a hat trick and had an assist. Lapham scored four goals off of five shots on goal. Lapham led UConn to a four-goal victory at Binghamton with a program-tying best seven goals, finishing the game with nine points. Her seventh goal of the March 7 affair spurred the Huskies to a final three-goal run that sealed the victory. Sparks and Mitchelides also scored to keep the Bearcats at bay. Moulton made 10 saves in that game as well and was one of five players to cause a Binghamton turnover. The second half in the Huskies’ return to Sherman Complex led them to avenge a 2009 one-goal loss to Marist. Lapham once again paced all with a six-point effort, recording two assists for the second-consecutive game while adding a team-best four goals. Connecticut outscored the Red Foxes 9-2 in the final 30 minutes of the 15-8 contest with goals from six different players and a hat trick from Cerar. Dominant play in both halves of a rainy contest in Fairfield, Conn. led the Huskies to a 14-7 victory over its second intra-state rival of the season. The freshmen played a large part in the win at Sacred Heart as four scored with Mackenzie Rainone and Chelsea Hauswirth each scoring twice. Rainone added an assist to lead the rookie class with four points over the Pioneers while it was Mitchelides who led all with six. She dished a career-best four assists in addition to a pair of goals. The UConn freshmen dominated the second half, scoring four of the five goals by the Huskies while Mitchelides scored nearly all of her team-best six points in the first half, adding her final point, an assist on the first goal of the second half. The March 19 return to Sherman Complex marked the end of the impressive run by UConn lacrosse, suffering a one-goal loss to St. Bonaventure. Despite a four-goal effort from Sparks, the Huskies were unable to halt a Bonnie scoring duo that scored eight of the team’s 10 goals. Connecticut held a 7-5 advantage at the break only to be outscored 6-3 in the second half. Sparks scored three of her four goals in the second half and was responsible for taking back the lead twice and tying the game with 4:19 on the clock. St. Bonaventure scored the gamewinner with just over a minute and half remaining in regulation and the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer to force overtime.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT 2011 University of Connecticut Lacrosse On the reverse side of things, UConn capitalized on the opportunity to end the non-conference portion of its schedule with a win, defeating Holy Cross by the same margin the Huskies fell to earlier in the week, 11-10. Sparks once again led the team in scoring and was one of three players to record a hat trick on the road. Mitchelides and Lapham were also part of the triple threat that contributed nine of the 11 goals scored by Connecticut. Norton’s four ground balls, accounting for 25-percent of the team’s ground balls, and one caused turnover against the Crusaders earned her BIG EAST Honor Roll recognition for the first time in her career. The Huskies opened the BIG EAST schedule on the road with games at Rutgers and at Georgetown and fell in both to return to Storrs with a 0-2 conference record. Testa saw her first playing time in BIG EAST action after Moulton vacated the cage, making four saves and picking up a team-best six ground balls in just over 45 minutes of work. Lapham and Sparks each recorded hat tricks for the secondconsecutive game as each scored a free-position goal in the 15-10 loss. Sparks was the catalyst and the finale of a five-goal run that tied the game at 5-5 at the break. Cerar and Lapham scored to start the second half for the Huskies, capturing a 7-6 lead before the Scarlet Knights ran away with a 10-7 advantage that UConn was unable to surmount. At Georgetown, Mitchelides was the leading effort behind the first single goal total by the Huskies since their season-opening loss. She scored four goals while Tupper hit the back of the net twice and added an assist to finish the game with three points. Three other players scored in the second-straight loss as the nationally-ranked Hoyas kept UConn at a distance throughout the game with seven and sixgoal runs in the first half. Georgetown outscored Connecticut 12-3 in the first half alone en route the 18-9 victory. The Huskies fell 11-2 in their first game against a top-10 opponent when they hosted Syracuse for the second-consecutive season. UConn was unable to put together much of an offensive threat to the Orange with Devaney and Lapham denying Syracuse a shutout. Moulton made eight saves in the game, having faced 20 or more shots in each of the last three games. Despite the goal differential, both teams scored well before their season averages in the Huskies’ tape-delay televised game on Cox. UConn bounced back in it’s first-ever conference meeting against Villanova on April 16. Freshman Jordan Christopher had a career-night with a hat trick and a pair of draw controls to lead the Huskies to a 10-8 victory over the visiting Wildcats. Under the lights of Sherman, Christopher scored three goals in the midst of a 7-1 scoring run by Connecticut between the two halves. Intermission proved to be a moot point for the Huskies as Christopher scored her second goal of the game with just over three minutes remaining in the half and her classmate Hauswirth reignited the UConn offense to a three-goal run to open the second half. The three-game homestand ended with a 13-9 loss at the hands of then-No. 13 Loyola (Md.) as the Huskies’ comeback bid ran short. UConn outscored the Greyhounds 6-2 in the final 20 minutes led by a pair of goals from Devaney and Mitchelides. Moulton made seven saves while picking up a pair of ground balls while it was Stephanie Norton who led all with five ground balls. With the advantage in the second half, the Huskies outscored a BIG EAST opponent for the first time in 2010. Cerar’s hat trick was a highlight on the road in Connecticut’s 15-8 loss at Louisville. She matched her career-high three goal effort for the fourth time during the season against the Cardinals while Mitchelides pitched in a pair of goals to help fuel the Husky offense. Mitchelides and Moulton both finished the game with four ground balls with Moulton adding eight saves to the day’s effort. In what was the 2009 turning point a year ago, the Huskies once again gave Cincinnati all that the team could handle, this time in Ohio. The Huskies defeated the Bearcats 11-9 for their first victory a season ago, and snapped a two-game skid with their first overtime victory of the 2010 campaign at Cincinnati. Hauswirth was responsible for the gamewinner in the 12-11 victory, finishing the game with two points. She was among six student-athletes who finished the game with two or more points led by a trio of three-point scorers. Cerar and Mitchelides each finished the game with hat tricks. Sparks scored twice in the second half en route to a three goal performance while Devaney scored once, assisting two others including the gamewinning goal. The road win gave the Huskies their second BIG EAST conference victory and a 9-7 overall record entering their final game of the regular season back in Storrs. Moulton’s effort against the Bearcats earned her a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll, turning away a combined 18 shots against Cincinnati and Louisville. Molly O’Brien certainly ended her career on a high note, scoring the final goal of UConn’s 16-9 loss to then-No. 14 Notre Dame. One of two seniors to get on the board in the final regular season game, O’Brien and the senior class found the Fighting Irish to be too much to handle. After opening the game with a three-goal lead, Notre Dame captured a commanding 9-4 advantage at the half. Sparks and Tupper co-led the team in scoring with matching two-goal and one-assist efforts against Notre Dame. Mitchelides also scored a pair of goals in the game while Moulton made 10 saves. A bitter end to the season did little to tarnish the accomplishments of a growing program and the valuable contributions of the freshman and sophomore classes. The Huskies will certainly increase their presence in the challenging BIG EAST where three teams made the NCAA Tournament, including the Orange who advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion, Maryland. Georgetown and Notre Dame also advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The 2010 Huskies took a huge step forward in rebuilding a program that will be successful in the near future as the youth of the team gains the experience necessary to compete successfully at the collegiate level. Lapham and Tupper each pulled in Offensive Player of the Week Awards in their second seasons with the team. Mitchelides made it three UConn players to receive the award as each helped to lay down the foundation for a successful future. 2011 UCONN LACROSSE

Dean’s List & Honor Roll Fourteen members of the 2010 Connecticut lacrosse squad were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team including four seniors from this season’s roster. In addition to the team’s individual academic accolades, the women’s lacrosse team has been honored seven times by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an IWLCA Academic Squad. To earn the distinction, the team must have earned greater than a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Kristen Haldeman concluded her Connecticut career in 2005 as the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior goalie graduated with a 3.92 GPA in biomedical engineering following her first season in the starting lineup to earn the honor. Twenty-four UConn lacrosse juniors and seniors have also been individually recognized by the IWLCA as Academic All-Americans since 2002, earning a GPA of 3.5 or better. The BIG EAST Conference The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year will mark the conference’s sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2009-10 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation’s top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women’s student-athlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women’s cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad reached the Final Four. On the men’s side, West Virginia’s basketball team became the BIG EAST’s 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the conference’s academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game. Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cincinnati’s Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men’s swimming. In track, Louisville’s D’Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville’s Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Cardinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men’s tennis singles. The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national championships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

Department of Sports Medicine
The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine team is spearheaded by UConn Director of Sports Medicine Jeffrey Anderson, MD, and UConn Team Physician Thomas Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine specialists for the team include Edward Collins, MD, in Willimantic and Michael Joyce, MD, of the Orthopaedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Barry Messinger, MD, of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester; and Robert Arciero, MD, and Kevin Shea, MD, of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the UConn sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 600 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut Strength & Conditioning plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through The strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues lacrosse student-athletes is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective. services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate sports. UConn lacrosse players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky players areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn student-athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training, and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. The staff supervises a strength and conditioning program for each Evan Feinglass Kim Gibbons Megan Hastillo individual athlete all year long. Specific testing is done to each Management player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning, and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each lacrosse player. The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past four years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaison to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet as well as reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library. Writing tutors are available each weeknight in the CPIA office. CPIA also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon request. A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn lacrosse program is Ingrid Hohmann. Hohmann monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree. The goal for each Husky student-athlete is to earn a degree so they can become a success in whatever field they choose.

Jeffrey Hathaway Jeffrey A. Hathaway has provided effective leadership for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics as he enters his eighth year in that position. At the same time, he has also become a leader for college athletics on both the national and conference level. He has played a vital role in the success story of UConn athletics for 19 of the past 21 years as he was the Executive Associate Director of Athletics at the school from 1990-2001.In his only two years away from the Storrs campus, Hathaway enjoyed a successful tenure as the Director of Athletics at Colorado State University from 2001-03. His first seven years as UConn’s Director of Athletics have arguably been the most successful in school history. The 2009-10 academic year was another successful campaign. The football team played in its third-straight bowl game and won its second consecutive while the women’s basketball team won the national championship with a perfect record for the second-straight year. In addition, the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball and baseball teams all qualified for postseason tournament play. UConn was also selected as one of 16 regional hosts for the NCAA baseball tournament. The women’s ice hockey team also spent most of the year ranked in the top 10 of the country. Hathaway also directed UConn to reach an agreement with IMG College, a division of IMG Worldwide, during the 2009-10 academic year. This 10-year athletics multi-media rights partnership is worth more than $80 million in guaranteed payments to the University. In 2007-08, UConn successfully completed the NCAA certification process. The institution was previously certified, once every 10 years as set forth by the NCAA, in 1998. Hathaway provided leadership for a comprehensive, year-long self study of the operations in the Division of Athletics, a site visit by a peer review team, a NCAA certification committee’s review of the self-study and a report by the peer review team. The Division also reached new long-term agreements with two of its media partners in recent years – Connecticut Public Television for women’s basketball and WTIC radio for football and
men’s and women’s basketball. UConn also completed a landmark ten-year, $46 million corporate partnership agreement with Nike, Inc. to exclusively provide footwear, apparel and equipment for Husky athletics. In addition to his leadership role at UConn, Hathaway is entering his fourth-year of a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee representing the BIG EAST Conference. As a member of the ten-person committee, Hathaway takes part in the selection and administration of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and the administration of the CBS television contract. Hathaway will serve as chairman of that committee in 2011-12. He is only the fourth individual in the history of the BIG EAST Conference to serve on the committee, joining Dave Gavitt, Jake Crouthamel and Mike Tranghese. Hathaway is a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Some significantly historic achievements have occurred during Hathaway’s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first school to win the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships in the same year (2004) and the football team was victorious in its first ever bowl game - the 2004 Motor City Bowl. Private fundraising for UConn athletics continues to provide exceptional academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. UConn secured a gift of $2.5 million from alumnus Mark Shenkman in 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, an intercollegiate and recreational services facility that serves the entire university community. Under Hathaway’s guidance, the Division of Athletics received the University’s Environmental Leadership Award for the construction of The Burton Family Football Complex and the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center. The two buildings are the University’s first projects certified as meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for “green” buildings. At its 13th annual awards ceremony in March of 2008, the Connecticut Real Estate Exchange presented UConn with the “Green Building Award” for these environmentally-friendly facilities.
In his role as Director, Hathaway also oversees UConn’s Recreational Services program. Serving the entire University community, approximately 580,000 individual uses were logged last year, reflecting the popularity of the diverse health and fitness offerings to students, faculty and staff. Hathaway leads a head coaching staff that is one of the most experienced in the country. UConn has 12 head coaches that have been in their current position 10 or more years as of the 2010-11 academic year, including women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma (26th year in 2010-11) and men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun (25th). The University recently completed a long term contract extension with Calhoun. UConn has the distinction of being the only school in the nation with two active Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coaches in Calhoun (Class of 2005 inductee) and Auriemma (Class of 2006 inductee). Hathaway was also a key factor in the opening of Rentschler Field in 2003 – the country’s newest and most modern BCS college football facility. During Hathaway’s career, he has always made the studentathlete the top priority. In the spring and fall semesters of the 2009 calendar year, UConn’s student-athletes excelled in the classroom as nearly 50% of the 650 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 “B-or better” semester grade point average. In addition, the Division of Athletics has consistently maintained a 99 percent retention rate among its studentathletes. “My focus is on the student-athlete,” says Hathaway. “That’s the most important part of our program. Our primary mission is the continued academic success of our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify people early in the process and assist them in charting a career path. In addition, we want to provide a quality experience in intercollegiate athletics for our student-athletes.” The University of Connecticut was saluted for its community service efforts by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) three times under Hathaway’s watch for its community service efforts. UConn was also honored by the NCAS in 2006 and ’07 for its efforts to assist former student-athletes in earning their college degree. In the 2006-07 academic year, Hathaway served on the University search committee to hire Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Barry Feldman and Executive Director of the Alumni Association Lisa Lewis. He is currently a member of the search committee for the University’s new president. Hathaway’s leadership has earned him respect and recognition both on the national and local levels. He was one of four finalists for the “Athletic Director of the Year” in the spring of 2008 at the inaugural Sports Business Awards by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal. In the summers of 2007 and ‘10, Hathaway was honored by NACDA as the AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year for Division I-A in the Northeast region (which includes the New England states and New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey). In 2004, The Sporting News named Hathaway to its “Power 100 List” - comprised of the 100 most powerful people in sports. He received the Joseph J. Fontana Distinguished Service Award from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in the spring of 2005. In the winter of 2006, Hathaway received the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation. During his tenure at both Colorado State and UConn, he was a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, as well as the Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee, which is responsible for issues involving postseason football competition and the certification of bowl games. On the conference level, Hathaway was the chair of the BIG EAST Athletic Directors Executive Committee through November of 2009. He is also past chairman of the BIG EAST Championship and Competition Committee as well as the league’s Finance Committee. Hathaway has served as a guest presenter at both the NACDA and NACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators) conventions in the past. In addition, he has also served as a lecturer at the IA Institute sponsored by the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association, held annually in Dallas. Hathaway originally came to Connecticut in November of 1990

as Senior Associate Athletic Director. In that role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics. He served internally as a program administrator for several sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer at UConn as the Huskies won four national championships in those sports during his tenure - two in women’s basketball (1995 and 2000) and one each in men’s basketball (1999) and men’s soccer (2000). Hathaway was also the program administrator for football. He played a critical role in the upgrade of the football program to Division I-A status as UConn became the first ever school to transition from the I-AA level to a BCS football conference. During Hathaway’s tenure at Colorado State, he oversaw a 15-sport program - nine women’s teams and six men’s. The Ram football team made a pair of bowl appearances while Hathaway was at CSU. The men’s basketball team won the Mountain West Conference tournament in March of ‘03 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years. The women’s basketball team advanced to postseason play twice, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2002 and the semifinals of the 2003 Women’s NIT. Hathaway was an extremely successful fundraiser during his time in Fort Collins. The school drew national attention for a $15.2 million gift from the Bohemian Foundation and president Pat Stryker for football stadium renovations and expansion. Prior to his first stint at UConn, Hathaway served in a number of capacities at his alma mater - the University of Maryland - from 1982-90, including Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions, Acting Assistant Athletics Director for Business Affairs, Athletics Business Manager and men’s basketball trainer. Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Maryland in 1981. He later received a Master’s Degree in General Administration (1991) from the University of Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. The women’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship with its second-consecutive undefeated season.
The UConn Division of Athletic sponsors 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won ten national championships since 1990 and has won 93 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships.
Kemba Walker was an All-BIG EAST Conference pick for the men’s basketball team. Melissa Gonzalez and the UConn field hockey team once again played in the NCAA Tournament after winning the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles.
Cristin Allen led the women’s ice hockey team to a top 10 ranking for most of the 2009-10 season. Mike Rutt of the men’s track and field team was the BIG EAST Indoor Track Performer of the Year and qualified for the outdoor NCAAs in the 800-meter run.
Toni Stahl helped lead the UConn men’s soccer team to a BIG EAST regular season championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Phylicia George of the women’s track and field team posted a number of school records and was the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner for her sport.
Diver Steve Ferriera became UConn’s first qualifier at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship.
Robert McClain and the Husky football team played in its third-consecutive bowl game and won its secondstraight.
Brittany Taylor and the women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Husky baseball team won a school-record 48 games and as UConn was one of 16 schools to host an NCAA Regional.

TRANsFORMATION A Campus for the 21st Century • UConn continues to renew, rebuild and enhance our campuses through an unprecedented $2.8 billion, 20-year investment in the University’s infrastructure. UCONN 2000 is the most ambitious publicly financed university building program in the country. • Now in its 16th year, UCONN 2000 has invigorated the University’s living and learning environments, helped advance faculty research, and stimulated public and private investment. This transformation revitalizes the state’s future by providing the means for the University to attract high-achieving students, prestigious faculty, and funding from public grants and private donors. Before the landmark program, Connecticut had one of the highest ratios of students attending college out-of-state. Today that trend has been dramatically reversed. • Applications continue to be on the rise with nearly 23,000 applicants competing for 3,200 seats at the main campus in Storrs and 1,200 seats at the regional campuses. • For the fifth consecutive year, more than half of the applicants are out-of-state students, comprising 33 percent of the incoming class.

Forthcoming projects made possible by UCONN 2000 include: • A $352 million expansion to the UConn Health Center that will include a stem cell research institute, renovations to large lecture halls, and renovations to the dental clinics. • New liberal arts facilities and life sciences buildings at the Storrs campus.
Storrs Center Creating a “Main Street” for Mansfield
Main Street is the heart and the soul of a community, a
place to meet friends for dinner before the game, to run daily errands, to enjoy the local music scene, or to buy a newspaper to read while sipping your morning coffee. Main Street is the magic that can transform a street into a neighborhood, buildings into a village, or a small town into a regional destination. In 2001, the Town of Mansfield teamed with UConn to form the Mansfield Downtown Partnership and set about creating its own “Main Street” area, Storrs Center. Storrs Center will be a mixed-use town center and main street corridor at the crossroads of the Town and the University. Located along Storrs Road/Route 195 adjacent to the University, the Town Hall, E.O. Smith High School, and the Mansfield Community Center, Storrs Center will include a town square, pedestrian-oriented streets, small lanes, and public spaces. There will be a variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, and residential options, which will attract all ages and interests and provide spaces for the community to gather. The Mansfield Downtown Partnership and master developer LeylandAlliance have worked diligently to make the vision of Storrs Center a reality. Some of their recent progress includes the signing of letters of intent from several local, regional, and national businesses; the preparation of final construction documents for improvements to Storrs Road and Dog Lane; and initiation of the selection of a designer for the parking garage and intermodal center. As progress continues, excitement about the project has steadily grown. The Partnership has garnered support from a variety of Mansfield residents, as evidenced by its 340 members. Another sign of the broad support
this project enjoys is the over $22.5 million in state and federal funding the Storrs Center project has received. Mansfield residents, local, state, and regional officials, and proponents of sustainable development, such as 1,000 Friends of Connecticut and CT Main Street Center, all recognize the value the new downtown will bring to the town, region, and state. With major approvals in hand, businesses signed on, and a significant amount of grant monies received, the Partnership and LeylandAlliance are continuing to prepare for the beginning of construction. Negotiations between LeylandAlliance and prospective tenants are on-going. In addition to leasing agreements, other prerequisites to construction include parking commitments for the first phase and financing commitments, both private and public.
