Head Coach Bob Goldberg

28th Season • Record: 360-133-3 (Men and Women Combined) Head coach Bob Goldberg has logged many miles walking the 50-meter pool decks of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. Entering his 28th season, the long-time coach of the Huskies is one of three head coaches in Storrs since 1937. Coach John Squires was the first full-time coach in the program, succeeded by Pete McDevitt. In 1988, coach Goldberg took over for the retired coach McDevitt and has held the reigns since. “It is an honor that I have never taken for granted to be in this position. I have always had a great deal of respect for coach Squires, who was a legend when I was a college student in the area, and coach McDevitt, who ran a high quality program that I watched from afar as I began my coaching career. To be the present coach continuing their past history has been something I am constantly proud of.” – comments Goldberg. A second milestone for the coach is seeing the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium enter its 25th season. “This pool has held up remarkably well throughout the years. Most people are shocked when they walk in the building only to find out the real age of the facility! There are so many great memories here from meets to practices and swimmers to coaches who have been here. To me, this building is full of the echoes of its history!” However, the time that has passed has not diminished coach Goldberg’s commitment to the program. The pursuit of excellence on a daily basis has never been stronger or worked towards with greater effort than it is now. Coach Goldberg says, “If I felt that I could not do the job with the energy I believe it deserves, I would walk away tomorrow. But every day I see the success of our past and current swimmers, and the potential success our future swimmers have in the three areas that I feel are important, and I am energized, impressed and motivated by their promise and accomplishments! They represent all the good thing I believe in that athletics does.” The first area the coach emphasizes is the academic side of the college experience. UConn Swimmers have had remarkable success in the classroom, being recognized by the CSCAA every year for the performances of women’s swimmers and most years for the men. “Ranked as the 19th-best public university nationally, UConn is a highly competitive institution. The consistent level of performance of our kids while in the classroom and then in their success in the working world with their UConn preparation is amazing!” The commitment to athletics comes second. UConn’s swimmers and divers train year-round to find their ultimate level of success. “Not everyone can be an Olympic champion, but everyone can train like they want to be an Olympic champion! When you have that level of commitment, kids can achieve so much, and it is so much fun to see them achieve that success and be part of the process.” The third and final piece of the process is the social development and maturation of each swimmer. “To see the changes our kids go through from the initial recruiting process while they are still in high school, through their college years and then well into adulthood is an amazing gift and something that I truly enjoy watching happen every year.” Success has consistently been a corner stone of the UConn program. New England, Big East, ECAC and American Athletic Conference individual champions have consistently been a regular part of the program. Four New England team championships, four ECAC team championships and consistent team finishes in the top half of all the conferences years is also the ‘norm’ for the Huskies.

Individually, there are numerous NCAA B cuts along with selected swimmers with NCAA qualifying swims. Internationally, there has also been success. National champions from Ireland, Israel, Bulgaria, Norway and Suriname have made their mark at UConn. Impressively, Olympians from Suriname and Saudi Arabia have also worn UConn caps. Finally, coach Goldberg’s overall dual meet record is an indication of his commitment to excellence. It stands at 360 wins, 133 losses and 3 ties heading into the 2015-16 season. Beyond school, swimming and social lives, the UConn swimmers do more as part of the coach’s philosophy. Swimmers participate in events such as the Swim Across America fund raiser for breast cancer research, volunteering as mentors to read to elementary school students from the area and helping Christmas charities are among some of the causes the team has participated in over the years. On campus, swimmers are always active in the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Council) that promotes many causes across campus and often can be seen volunteering for many events. Coach Goldberg is a 1969 graduate of Springfield College with a Masters in Biomechanics from Penn State. He began his college coaching career at Penn State where for 15 seasons he coached the divers to success, led by two-time Olympian Mary Ellen Clark. He was also a tenured assistant professor teaching in the Kinesiology Department. He spent three years as an administrator and faculty member at North Carolina State University, closely involved in the construction of their swimming facility. Returning to his roots in New England, coach Goldberg is the Director of Aquatics as well as the head coach at UConn. He is married to Alyce and they have three married children and six wonderful grandchildren. “I have been so fortunate to have spent my entire professional life working in a swimming pool surrounded by great young men and women pursuing their passion for sport. It would be an understatement to say that I have been blessed!”, Goldberg said.

Coach Goldberg led the women’s swimming team to a 5-1 record in dual meets last season.

Head Diving Coach John Bransfield 18th Season

University of Connecticut diving coach John Bransfield wrapped up his 17th season at UConn this past spring, leading the Huskies to a highly successful 2014-15 campaign. Both diving programs helped the Huskies finish with winning records during the dual meet season this past year, and multiple UConn divers earned conference honors along the way. Junior John Brice was tabbed the American Athletic Male Diver of the Week twice last season, while junior Taryn Urbanus and Alexandra Butera each grabbed Female Diver of the Week honors once throughout the dual meet portion of the year. Urbanus, a 2014 All-Conference selection, broke through this past season, as she became the first Husky diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Danielle Cecco in 2013. The Quincy, Mass. native competed in both the 1 and 3-meter events at the NCAA’s after finishing it the top-three in both at the Zone A Meet this past March. Urbanus was one of five Huskies in action at the Zone Meet, and Connecticut made program history at the event when four UConn divers reached the finals of the 3-meter. At the 2015 American Athletic Championships, both Urbanus and Brice earned a spot on the All-Conference Team. Brice finished second in the 1 and 3-meter events at the Conference Meet, while Urbanus placed second in the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter. She was tabbed UConn’s Outstanding Diver of the Year at the team banquet following the 2014-15 season, and Urbanus will enter her final season in Storrs with hopes of contending at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Developing champions is not something new to Bransfield, the 2012 Big East Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. In his 38 years of college coaching, he has had many conference champions and at least one conference champion at each and every school that he has worked at, including Army, Maine, Springfield and Northern Michigan. Bransfield has coached several national qualifiers, including a four-time NCAA Division II Champion. In 2003, Melissa Kull became the first Connecticut diver

to compete at the NCAA National Championships. Stephen Ferreira (`10) competed at the NCAAs, followed by All-American Danielle Cecco (‘13), who competed at the National Championships three straight years, in `11, `12 and `13. With a background which extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving, Bransfield enjoyed many years of success with U.S. Diving as a Junior Olympic coach. He was been recognized by the National Governing body twice in that phase of his career with stipends to work with two U.S Olympic Coaches. Bransfield has considerable experience in the sport away from the pool deck as well. Four times he served on the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee, and in the early 90’s he was appointed as a Regional Technical Director of United States Diving. While coaching at Army, he hosted numerous clinics for U.S Diving Coaches involving several U.S Olympic Team Coaches. In 1998, he served as the Competition Manager of the Goodwill Games in New York. Bransfield has taught numerous coaching clinics for Grass Roots fundamentals, Spotting Training and Safety Certification. In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’s Republic of China. The opportunity allowed him to closely observe the training programs at two Provincial sites and attend the Asian Junior Championships. Bransfield is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College. He earned a master’s at Northern Michigan and continued to study biomechanics while coaching at Springfield College. Bransfield and his wife, Ginny, have four sons, and presently reside in Storrs.

Coach Bransfield’s guidance helped senior Taryn Urbanus qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships last season.

Coach Bransfield expects a fun, gritty and exciting season with continued success. Coach Goldberg feels that even with the graduation of several great swimmers, the 2015-16 team may be the best balanced and most overall talented team UConn has had. “We have always been an underfunded men’s team full of overachievers and this year’s group is no exception. I am constantly amazed at the teamwork, spirit, accomplishments and goals of UConn men’s swimming and so proud of what they have accomplished!” - Goldberg UConn junior Chris Girg holds the school record in 500 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay events.

2015-16 UConn Swimming and Diving 5

Women’s Preview University of Connecticut

2015-16 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

Junior sprint freestyler Tara O’Prey set the school record in the 100 fly last season.

The UConn women are coming off a strong second-place finish at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships. While they clearly feel good about ending the year with a strong 5-1 record, setting several school records at the mid-season meet at Louisville, 15 All-Conference swimmers from the 2015 championships, several NCAA ‘B’ cuts and one diver advancing to the NCAA Zone Championships, they realize that this was just one chapter in UConn’s swimming books and the next chapter is yet to be written. With all but four women returning and a stellar class of six recruits, the swimmers, divers, coaches and entire program are excited to see what this season can bring. In that light, coach Goldberg has scheduled the most difficult slate of meets that the Huskies has ever faced. “Regardless of the outcome of our in-season meets, we will have been challenged by the best. When we show up at the conference meet in February, we will be battle tested. No one we will see in Houston in February will be better than the competition we will swim against all year. That was my goal in scheduling this year.” - Goldberg The team is led by six able seniors who have spent long hours with the program. Captain Caitlin Cole has spent the last year improving and will be an important part of the distance lane. Fellow captain Emily Boyko adds considerable strength to an already strong stroke lane with her fly. Tri-captain Kennedy Meier can fill many spots but has enormous potential to score in her 200 backstroke. “These three swimmers serve as incredibly strong role models to our younger women. They are team captains, study group leaders and mentors, outstanding students and topflight young women. We are fortunate to have them serve as our team leaders,” says Goldberg. However, senior class does not end there. Two of the consistently best swimmers at UConn are part of this group. Laura Hyland and Laura Ruttan may be from different continents, but they are joined together by being the two premiere breaststrokers. While they battle each other in the pool every day and in every set, they are roommates and best friends out of the pool. The final member of this group is Taryn Urbanus, an outstanding diver who is a conference champion as well as an NCAA qualifier. The junior class is enormous. It is difficult to try and describe this group but it is clear that their strength is in their number of very high quality swimmers. Margot Manning may be one of the key swimmers for the team heading into the season. She had an outstanding year in 2015 and has the experience to be a leader in the sprint freestyles. She will be needed to take the open spots left with the graduation of Chin Pigot. Christine Pedersen is another very important swimmer for the Huskies. Dominant in the water with several Norwegian national championships to her name and a great deal of success for the Huskies, Christine can also be a leader with her attitude towards excellence. “Christine not only talks about being the best, she walks the walk,” says coach. Another swimmer who ‘walks the walk’ is fast emerging flier Sophie Nothnagle. “Sophie came as a last minute walk-on to our program and we had no idea of what we had gotten,” Goldberg said. After a solid freshmen

6

2015-16 UConn Swimming and Diving

season, Nothnagle set the varsity record in the 200 fly as well as earning spots on several of UConn’s relays. There does not appear to be a limit to how far Sophie can go. Adding to the junior class wealth is backstroker Jaimie Lynn Brookover. She surprised everyone with her second-place finish in the 100 backstroke at the conference meet, earning her a spot on the record-setting medley relay. This was surprising because coach Goldberg feels that the 200 is clearly her best event and that opens up a world of expectations for this swimmer. Shelley Faykes is strong and healthy heading into the season and she along with coach Donovan can spend the year getting ready for the distance events at the conference meet. She has a second and third-place finisher in her mile and has sights set on the top step. Caroline Finkle joins Nothnagle as a butterflier with a great upside. “Caroline has not yet swum her best race and I feel she can easily be under the two minute mark this yea,” says Goldberg. Maddie Hoopes has been just on the edge of a breakthrough and this can be her year. She is a strong and powerful swimmer who has to be trained properly, and if so will swim very fast. Rachel Mulligan is a member of this group and looks to establish herself. Last year was filled with injuries and a slow start after transferring in to UConn but this season should be better. Nicole Ricci is another talented backstroker who is finding her niche. “We have to find a place for Nicole and with her we are a better team,” Goldberg mentioned. Also adding to the wealth if backstrokers is Sam Park. Darrah Jampo has ability in several events and can help the Huskies. The remaining three juniors are sprinters and are so vital to the success of this group. Tara O’Prey set the varsity record in the 100 fly and is a quality sprint freestyler. Jordan Drake can swim a number of sprint frees along with fly and breaststroke and is a valuable member of the group. Finally is Dede Parsons, someone who coach Goldberg feels has the ability to swim much faster if given the right tools. The sophomores are a solid class. Emilia Weihenig is maturing into a very good swimmer who can challenge for a spot in the competitive backstroke events. Sara Nestrowitz had some great distance swims last season and with a year’s worth of experience should become a factor in the conference. Sophie King had a very good season as a relative newcomer to the sport and will look to improve her fly this year. Christina Cirillo has skills in just about every stroke and could find an important spot in the IM events. Emily Caplis swam her best breaststroke times last year and looks to continue to improve. Emily Parillo has solid fly and IM times and hopes to move into the starting group. Finally, Sammi Bassman has the ability to become a star for the Huskies. She has room for continued improvement in her breaststroke events and will be important to the Huskies. Freshmen are always interesting to evaluate in a program, but this class for the Huskies has a great deal of promise. Jackie Van Lew brings a great résumé from New Jersey to the Huskies and has the potential to offset the loss of Kate Munzenmaier last season to graduation. Her freestyle is strong and impressive and she adds skill in most all events. Alex McPherson is a fast emerging distance swimmer who can certainly make an impact for the Huskies. She had a great senior season and looks to continue. Julie Hu has breaststroke times that are in the top-eight from the conference meet last year and will be an impact swimmer. Maddy Blair and Danielle Bordes are both high quality freestylers with times that scored at the conference meet and make the competition for UConn relays intense. Their continued improvement is a key for the Huskies. Finally, Annika Grewel comes to UConn with most impressive times and has the skills to challenge for a conference championships and NCAA berth. “While only six swimmers, this is a blue chip level class that will be heard from.” - Goldberg UConn’s diving program had a banner year last season, reaching high marks in several areas. The women’s divers were undefeated in the dual meet seasons, a program first. Every diver entered in the American Athletic Conference Championships made the finals on at least one board, and the same results were attained at the NCAA Zone Championships three weeks later. Taryn Urbanus qualified for the NCAA National Championships, bringing UConn diving back to the NCAA’s for the fifth time in six years. The 2015-16 campaign promises to build on those successes, as the diving program returns every member for last year’s squad. Led by senior captains Taryn Urbanus and John Brice, the team is in the trenches working hard to refine fundamentals in order to improve the dive lists for a competitive outing. While both seniors made the All-Conference Team last year, they are joined by a handful of juniors and sophomores that are pushing them, with the potential to win several events themselves. Monica Marcello and Dan Kinney, of Middletown, Conn. in particular are making tremendous strides in their capacity to take cues and put them in action. The chemistry of the team is very tight and competition between classes is welcome. The competitive schedule is as good as it has been in over 10 years, with the team looking to demonstrate the poise and desire to use these contests as worthy objectives to further their development. Coach Bransfield expects a fun, gritty and exciting season with continued success. “This is a large, talented, deep, academically strong and impressive group of young ladies in so many ways. I am motivated by their abilities every day and love to watch them develop into a powerful group. With strong leadership, dedicated efforts and hopefully staying healthy all year they can accomplish all of things they set out to do and write some history for the Huskies.” - Goldberg

Wolff-Zackin Natatorium University of Connecticut

2015-16 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

T

he Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. The 39,000-square foot natatorium provides one of the finest facilities on the East Coast. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are the only varsity programs housed in the facility. The Natatorium was built in part of the university’s $28 million Sports Center Complex, which also includes the 171,000-square foot Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, home to the UConn men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. It features several high-tech innovations making the pool one of the fastest in the region. The facility is a 50-meter “stretch pool” that includes two moveable bulkheads, allowing the pool to assume several different configurations. The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deepwater course in the Wolff-Zackin pool, featuring eight-foot wide lanes and a flow-through bulkhead. A second bulkhead provides an enclosed warm-up and warm-diving area, while also allowing for a separate diving area. The diving area includes two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards mounted on concrete. A dry board and trampoline with spotting rigs, and one and threemeter boards with rigs over the top makes for excellent training. Some of the other features of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium include a state-of-the-art Colorado Electronic Timing System V, men’s and women’s team record boards, a videotape replay system and an underwater viewing window. In addition, there are individual coaches’ offices, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms and visiting team locker rooms. The spectator area can accommodate 800 Husky fans. Adjacent to the Natatorium is Brundage Pool which is available to UConn coach Goldberg and his staff to enhance the Husky training program. Between the two pools, the Huskies have 18 lanes available to them for training purposes. The $14 million remodeling of Connecticut’s athletic facilities included complete renovation of Brundage Pool, extending and expanding the great

facilities UConn has to offer its swimming and diving programs. The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium houses a terrific training facility for divers on the UConn team. There are two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards on shorts stands, with a spotting rig above each level. On deck, there is a dry board and a trampoline, each with a spotting rig, along with two state-of-the-art camera/Tivo systems and flat screen televisions for each side. As part of the remodeled athletic complex project, UConn swimmers have the use of a new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room, featuring all of the latest in strength and conditioning equipment. The Huskies also have daily access to a spacious athletic training facility with the latest technology for rehabilitating athletic injuries.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

T

he strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Matt Balis. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn swimming and diving athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. Each program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This format provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each swimming and diving athlete.

COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES

E

stablished in 1986, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) provides comprehensive academic support to all UConn studentathletes. In her third year working with the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs is Lindsay Darcy. Darcy recently joined the UConn staff from Manhattan College. Darcy earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange field hockey team, and earned BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors and at the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Darcy monitors student-athlete academic performance, counsels individuals regarding major and career options, facilitates registration in courses that accommodate practice times while ensuring progress toward a degree, coordinator tutor support and assists student-athletes in the developing of learning and time management skills. The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team takes great pride in the academic and leadership accomplishments of its team members. The women’s team consistently has been recognized for academic excellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover (2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest award recognizing academic and athletic achievement and improvement, service, leadership, perseverance, and character). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last eight Kinsman Awards, with Craig Orski winning in 2003 and Bobby Folan in 2005 and Tristan Jones in 2007. Folan was also selected by the NCAA as the sole UConn representative to its 2005 Leadership Conference.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE

T

he Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care. The team is spearheaded by Robert Howard, MA, ATC, the Head Athletic Trainer. Walter Trisdale is in his second year of handling the dayto-day training needs of the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving team. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Giselle Aerni, the Director of Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Matt Hall. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

Community Service and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are highly-involved in the SAAC. The 2003-04 SAAC president was Kate Jelus from the women’s team. The 2006-07 vicepresident was free-styler Emily Karel. The Committee consists of representatives from each one of UConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to community service, it promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The SAAC also holds an annual Talent Show for freshman studentathletes and an ice cream social at the end of each semester during the study period for final exams.

CLOSE TO STORRS CLOSE TO

STORRS

In addition to all that the city of Hartford and the state of Connecticut has to offer, the region within two hours of Storrs is ripe with cultural and entertainment possibilities.

SPRINGFIELD (47 miles)

NEW YORK CITY (142 miles)

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the hall’s long list of inductees now includes UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. Once you finish your tour of the Hall of Fame, Springfield’s neighboring suburb of Agawam is the home of Six Flags New England, the region’s largest amusement park.

The largest city in the country and the “media capital of the world” is a UConn city. New York City is located approximately two hours from Storrs and when the Huskies are in town, they make their presence known. UConn took over Madison Square Garden in March 2014 when the Huskies won the NCAA East Regional on their way to the national championship. The UConn football team made their football debut in the Big Apple last November when it played at Yankee Stadium while the men’s ice hockey team plays this season in Brooklyn. From the glimmer of Times Square, to the vast expanse of Central Park, to the majestic skyline, New York City can be easily reached by the Metro-North train lines that run into southern Connecticut. The metro New York area also boasts 10 major professional sports franchises.

CLOSE TO STORRS

BOSTON (86 miles) The birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is a living history textbook, covering everything from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Meanwhile, the city blends its old world charm with a cosmopolitan new world attitude that is evidenced by some of the trendier shops and restaurants that line both historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Back Bay’s Newbury Street. One of the world’s foremost centers of education, Boston is home to over 50 colleges and universities; perhaps the entire world’s most concentrated collection of colleges. The greater Boston area also includes the summer beach resorts on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A hub of sporting activity, the 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox have called fabled Fenway Park home since 1912. The 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics and the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins also call Beantown home, while the 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2014 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots and MLS’ New England Revolution play outside of the city in Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium.

PROVIDENCE (51 miles) Rhode Island’s capital city shows that one of the nation’s smallest states also has plenty to offer its visitors. The multi-cultural capital city, which dates back to 1636, is the Ocean State’s centerpiece. The best known hamlet on the Rhode Island shore, the ocean town of Newport is world famous for its mansions and is a popular vacation destination for those seeking aquatic activities. Newport’s renowned music festival is also a well-attended annual event.

PRESIDENT

SUSAN HERBST

S

usan Herbst was appointed as the 15th President of the University of Connecticut by its Board of Trustees in December of 2010, and arrived on campus in June of 2011. She is the first female president of the University, which was founded in 1881. Since that time, she has led multiple initiatives to strengthen teaching, research and service at the University. Chief among them is her fouryear plan, approved by the University’s Board of Trustees in December 2011, to hire 300 new tenured or tenure-track faculty members at UConn – above and beyond filling vacancies – to significantly enhance course offerings and the University’s research capability. The initiative has resulted in new faculty hires across multiple disciplines, including both the sciences and humanities, building on existing faculty strengths as well as investing in emerging fields. President Herbst has also led the implementation of two recent major state investments in UConn: Next Generation Connecticut and Bioscience Connecticut, both of which were passed by the Connecticut state legislature and signed into law by Governor Dannel P. Malloy in 2013 and 2011, respectively. Next Generation Connecticut is a more than $1.5 billion endeavor that will expand educational opportunities, research, and innovation in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines at UConn over the next decade, as well as add new faculty in the humanities. The cornerstone of this effort is a major increase in the University’s enrollment, the

expansion of our faculty – in addition to UConn’s current faculty hiring initiative – and new and updated facilities to accommodate enhanced STEM research and teaching, as well as UConn’s growing population. It also will support the academic missions, and the expansion of critical programs, at UConn’s Hartford and Stamford campuses. Bioscience Connecticut is an $864 million initiative that is revitalizing the UConn Health enterprise, expanding enrollment in the medical and dental classes, building new business incubators, creating centers of excellence with neighboring institutions, and more. Expansion plans include building a new world-class patient tower, an outpatient ambulatory center, and parking garages. Existing facilities will undergo major renovation, making room for updated infrastructure, state-of-the-art research laboratories, and modern educational spaces. Through Bioscience Connecticut, business incubator space at the University will double. Additional prominent clinician-scientists will also be recruited to the faculty to contribute toward UConn Health’s academic, clinical, and research programs. Bioscience Connecticut was critical to attracting The Jackson Laboratory to create a new billion-dollar personalized medicine laboratory on the UConn Health campus in Farmington as part of a new partnership with the University. In addition, President Herbst announced in 2012 that UConn would relocate one of its regional campuses, currently located in suburban West Hartford, back to downtown Hartford, where it was initially located in 1939 before being moved out of the city in the 1970s. In June 2014, it was announced that the new campus would be located and constructed

at the site of the former Hartford T i m e s building on Prospect Street. The $115 million project will house 2,300 students and 250 employees, and be designed as a neighborhood campus anchored by a main building in the heart of downtown with other spaces located throughout the area. Classes are expected to begin in fall 2017. One of President Herbst’s other priorities is dramatically increasing the level of philanthropic giving to UConn through the UConn Foundation. Along with Joshua Newton, who began as president of the UConn Foundation in 2013, she has set the goal of eventually raising at least $100 million in new gifts per year, with a long-term goal of reaching an endowment value of $1 billion. Prior to her appointment at UConn, President Herbst served as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer of the University System of Georgia, where she led 15 university presidents and oversaw the academic missions for all 35 public universities in Georgia. Before arriving in Georgia, she was provost and executive vice president at the University at Albany (SUNY), and also served as officer in charge of the university from 2006 to 2007, upon the death of Kermit L. Hall. She previously served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University. Born in New York City and raised in Peekskill, N.Y., Herbst received her B.A. in Political Science from Duke University in 1984, and her Ph.D. in communication theory and research from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication in Los Angeles in 1989. Herbst spent 14 years at Northwestern University, joining the faculty in 1989 and serving until her departure to Temple in 2003. At Northwestern she held a variety of positions including professor of political science and chair of the department. She is a scholar of public opinion, media, and American politics, and is author of four books and many articles in these areas, most recently, Rude Democracy: Civility and Incivility in American Politics (2010). Along with Benjamin Page, Lawrence Jacobs, and Adam Berinsky, she edits the University of Chicago Press series in American Politics. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

WARDE MANUEL W

arde J. Manuel, who has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics, became the Director of Athletics at the University of Connecticut in March of 2012. UConn teams have won six NCAA national championships under Manuel’s watch - the most ever by Husky squads in a three-year period. In May of 2015, in recognition of Manuel’s leadership of the Huskies success academically and athletically, he was named a winner of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA). The UConn Division of Athletics has enjoyed outstanding performances in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) under Manuel’s watch. In 2015, UConn had 13 teams that posted a perfect single-season 1000 score. In 2014, UConn’s three national championship teams (field hockey and men’s and women’s basketball) posted a perfect 1000 singleyear score while field hockey also had a perfect 1000 four-year score. The men’s basketball team has had APR scores of 978, 947, 1000 and 1000 in the past four years as Manuel has helped develop a comprehensive academic plan for all UConn programs. In 2014-15, the UConn field hockey team won their second-straight NCAA and the women’s basketball team won a third-straight NCAA title. UConn teams won eight conference regular season and tournament championships. The women’s soccer team played in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the second round, while men’s track and field, women’s swimming and diving and women’s cross country sent individuals to NCAA events. In the 2013-14 academic year, UConn won three national championships for the first time in school history - men’s basketball, women’s basketball and field hockey. While the men’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. In addition, Husky teams won seven conference regular season and tournament championships. UConn was just one of four schools nationally that finished in the top ten of the Capital One Cup on both the men’s and women’s side. His first academic year of 2012-13 was a highly successful one for UConn teams, highlighted by the women’s basketball team winning the NCAA Championship. The Husky men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and baseball teams all took part in NCAA tournament play. UConn’s women’s diving and men’s and women’s track and field programs were all represented in NCAA individual championships. Within three months of his arrival, Manuel directed UConn’s acceptance into membership of Hockey East, the nation’s premier men’s ice hockey conference, as the Huskies begin play in the league in 2014-15.

Manuel oversaw a coaching transition in men’s basketball with the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun and the hiring of former Husky student-athlete, NBA player and UConn assistant coach Kevin Ollie. In December of 2013, Manuel hired former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco as UConn’s new football coach. During his tenure, Manuel also hired new head coaches for the UConn men’s ice hockey (Mike Cavanaugh), women’s ice hockey (Chris MacKenzie), volleyball (Kris Grunwald), women’s track and field (J.J. Clark), and softball program (Jen McIntyre). Manuel led the completion of the $40 million fundraising effort for the construction of the Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center, which opened in the fall of 2014 and provides the Husky men’s and women’s program with a training, practice and academic services home. The facility is the first privately-funded building on the UConn campus and is named for Peter and Pamela Werth, who donated a total of $7 million to the building. Manuel helped to secure an $8 million gift, the largest in UConn athletic history, from former Husky men’s soccer student-athlete Tony Rizza for the building of a new state-of-the-art soccer stadium on campus. Manuel has already become a key leader in the American Athletic Conference where he currently serves as the conference representative on the NCAA Division I Council, as a member of the CFO Competition Committee, serves on the Athletic Director Executive Committee, and served for three years as a member of the league’s Finance Committee. He was elected as a Trustee of the Women’s Sport Foundation in June 2015, elected the Chair of that group’s Finance Committee and serves on WSF Executive Committee. Manuel currently serves on the board of Hartford’s Camp Courant and as a member of the Men Make a Difference and Men Against Domestic Violence for Interval House. Prior to arriving in Storrs, Manuel led a 20-sport program at the University at Buffalo from August 2005 until his departure for UConn in March 2012. During his tenure the Bulls enjoyed an unparalleled period of success during his time there from an athletic, academic and community service perspective. Buffalo enjoyed great on-field success during Manuel’s time as the football team participated in the 2009 International Bowl (first bowl appearance in school history) and the men’s basketball team made postseason appearances in three of the his final seven years. Olympic sports also thrived under Manuel’s leadership with accomplishments such as threestraight Dad Vail Regatta titles by the rowing team, six wrestlers earning spots at the 2011 NCAA Championship and the women’s tennis team making an appearance in the 2008 NCAA tournament becoming the first team in UB history to accomplish that feat. Manuel was honored by Sports Business Journal as a 2008 national 40-Under-40 honoree after receiving the same honor from Business First of Buffalo in fall of 2007. Manuel has served on a number of national and conference committees and boards. In June of 2007, Manuel accepted the Opportunity Award by all-time tennis great Billie Jean King, as Buffalo was recognized by the Women’s Sports Foundation as one of four “standout” colleges and universities in the nation for outstanding achievement in providing equitable athletic opportunities for its female student-athletes. Prior to his time at Buffalo, he was the assistant and associate director of athletics for the University of Michigan, where he oversaw that school’s football and men’s basketball programs. In February 1998, he was named an assistant athletic director at Michigan with responsibilities for overseeing operational facets of the university’s athletic program. He was named an associate athletic director in September 2000. Born May 22, 1968, Manuel is a native of New Orleans, who was a high school All-American football player and played for the University of Michigan under its legendary coach, Bo Schembechler. Manuel earned multiple letters and started at defensive end in his sophomore year. His football career was cut short by a neck injury and he subsequently earned two letters on the Wolverines’ track and field team. After graduating from Michigan, Manuel was coordinator of the university’s Wade H. McCree, Jr., Incentive Scholars Program from June 1990 to August 1993. The program is a partnership with The President’s Council of State Universities and Detroit Public Schools that helps students prepare for higher education at public universities in Michigan. He subsequently worked briefly as an academic advisor with the Georgia Tech Athletic Association before being named assistant athletic director of academic affairs. In the course of working on a PhD in social work and psychology at Michigan, he earned a master’s degree in social work in 1993 and an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School of Business in April 2005. Manuel and his wife, Chrislan, have a daughter, Emma, and a son, Evan.
