Wolthausen was also on the staff of the Las Vegas Locomotives when it played the Hartford Colonials in the United Football League on Nov. 20, 2010. UConn offensive line coach Mike Foley is the lone holdover on the staff and is in his ninth season. HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLS UConn has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013), 1-4 (2014).

OFFENSE NOTES FOXX MAKING ALL THE PLAYS UConn senior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) has UConn’s longest reception, rush and punt return of the 2014 season. The long rush came on Saturday when he had a 68-yard TD against UCF (Nov. 1) early in the second quarter that tied the game at 7-7. Foxx had the rush running out the option as a quarterback. Foxx had an 88-yard TD pass reception from redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) vs. East Carolina on October 23. The play was the fourth-longest pass in school history and the longest since a 90-yarder from Dan Orlovsky to Jason Williams against Temple in 2004.

WHITMER AT STARTING QB Diaco announced on Monday, August 18 that redshirt sophomore Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) would be the starting quarterback for the Husky football team as the 2014 season begins. Redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was to serve as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. Cochran did start the opener vs. BYU and was 17 of 31 in the air for 171 yards and an interception. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards. Cochran has permanently discontinued playing football due to sustaining multiple concussions during his career Whitmer has now started the past eight games for the Huskies while sophomore Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) is second on the depth chart. Whitmer started the win over Stony Brook and was 12 of 27 in the air for 142 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Huskies leading rusher with 29 yards on 13 carries. As the starter vs. Boise, Whitmer was 16 of 29 for 209 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions. Whitmer was the only QB to play at USF and was 6-of-10 in the air for 88 yards and a touchdown. Whitmer was 18 of 30 for 303 yards vs. East Carolina on October 23 with two TDs passes, including a strike of 88-yards to Foxx, which was the fourth-longest pass play in school history. Against Army, he had 68 rushing yards on eight carries and one TD and was also 19 of 31 in the air for 170 yards and two TDs. His 68 rushing yards were easily as career high topping his 17 against Maryland on Sept. 15, 2012. Whitmer has now started 24 career games at UConn, with all 12 games in 2012, four in 2013 and eight this season. He has thrown for 5,031 career yards as a Husky and 25 touchdowns. In addition to Whitmer and Boyle, Diaco also used Foxx in the Temple, UCF and Army games at quarterback. Foxx completed his only pass attempt on the day for four yards and also carried the ball three times for 30 yards vs. Temple, including a 26-yard rush. He had a 68-yard TD run from the quarterback position on vs. UCF. WHITMER IN EXCLUSIVE COMPANY After throwing for 303 yards at East Carolina on Oct. 23, Whitmer became one of 11 quarterbacks in the FBS to eclipse 300 in a game in each of the past three seasons. The list is: Shane Carden, East Carolina Rakeem Cato, Marshall (four seasons) Cody Fajardo, Nevada (four seasons) Connor Halliday (four seasons with 400) Taylor Heinicke, Old Dominion (four seasons) Brett Hundley, UCLA Sean Mannion, Oregon State (four seasons) Marcus Mariota, Oregon Bo Wallace, Ole Miss Chandler Whitmer, UConn

Foxx had a 72-yard punt return against Stony Brook in the third quarter of the game to help lead the Huskies to a 16-13 win.

Cochran set the school single-game record for passing yards with 461 against Memphis in the season finale and also had 311 vs. Rutgers, which is 32nd. Whitmer started the first four games of the season and passed for 349 yards vs. Maryland, which is the 12th highest in school single-game history. Whitmer also passed for 333 yards against Western Michigan in 2012 – which is 20th in school history. Boyle passed for 310 yards in his first collegiate start vs. USF last season, which is 33rd. UConn never had a season with three 300-yard QBs and three seasons with two 300-yard QBs – 1990 (Cornelius Benton and Matt DeGennaro), 1991 (Benton and Tom DeSarno) and 1998 (Brian Hoffmann and Shane Stafford). WHITMER IN UCONN RECORD BOOKS Whitmer’s name started to appear in the UConn record books early in the 2013 season. Here’s a summary: fifth in career total offense with 4,567 yards; sixth in career plays with 835; fourth in career pass completions with 381; sixth in career passing attempts with 674; fifth in career passing yards with 4,861; and third in career yards per attempt with 7.21. His 361 pass attempts in 2012 were sixth in single-season history and his 208 completions were seventh while his 2,664 passing yards were fifth. DAVIS CLIMBING THE LADDER TOO UConn senior wide receiver Geremy Davis has 33 receptions for 431 yards this season with seven receptions for 96 yards vs. BYU and six receptions for 113 yards against Stony Brook. He had three receptions for 47 yards against Boise State with a 10-yard TD reception. Davis and Whitmer hooked up for a 32-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter of the USF game. Davis led UConn in receiving vs. Temple with eight receptions for 80 yards and also led the team vs. Tulane with eight receptions for 63 yards. Davis has made a reception in 33-straight games, dating back to the 2011 season, the 12th-longest such streak in the country. He is seventh in career receptions with 155 while Brian Kozlowski is sixth with 159 from 1989-92. Davis is seventh in career receiving yards with 2,207 while David Dunn (1985-97) is sixth with 2,285. Davis’ 71 receptions last year were fifth in single-season history while his 1,085 yards were sixth.

DEFENSE NOTES ALL THE PICKS Redshirt junior safety Andrew Adams tied a program record when he became the fifth Husky ever to record three interceptions in a game, doing so against UCF on Nov. 1. Adams was the first to accomplish the feat since Oct. 1, 2005, when current Indianapolis Colt Darius Butler recorded three picks against Army. UConn had two interceptions going into the UCF game, but recorded four in the contest to triple its previous season total. For his efforts, Adams earned a “Helmet Sticker” from ESPN’s Lou Holtz for the top defensive performance of the week.

Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted his 11 tackles after never previously notching more than five in a game in his career. Vann had a huge game at USF on Sept. 19, upping his careerhigh by recording 14 tackles, including nine solo stops. He also added 2.5 tackles for loss and leads the Huskies with 75 tackles in 2014. Vann has led the Huskies or tied for the team-high in tackles in four contests this year, and has at least eight tackles in eight of nine games. He also notched his third double-digit tackle game with 10 stops at East Carolina on Oct. 23. Stewart had the most at Tulane on Oct. 11, and set a new-career high with 12 to lead all players against UCF on Nov. 1. He leads UConn with 8.0 tackles for loss after picking up his second sack of the year against the Knights. Ashiru led UConn with 11 tackles at ECU, tying his season and career-high. He also notched his first career interception in the UCF game. SEASONED SECONDARY All four of UConn’s starters in the secondary started the first seven games this year, and likely would have continued to do so if not for a season-ending injury to redshirt-senior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) at ECU on Oct. 23. A four-year starter, Jones ends his UConn career after 43 starts with 223 tackles, 18 pass breakups and eight interceptions. The other members of the secondary that have started each game are redshirt-sophomore cornerback Jhavon Williams (Delray Beach, Fla.), redshirt-sophomore safety Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.) and redshirt-sophomore safety Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.). Melifonwu was a 2013 Athlon Sports Freshman All-American honorable mention, and is fourth on the Huskies this year with 59 tackles. Adams recorded a career-high 10 stops on Oct. 23 at East Carolina and is second on the squad with 70 tackles this year. True freshman Jamar Summers made his first career start at corner against UCF on Nov. 1. THE BIG FELLAS UP FRONT Redshirt junior Julian Campenni (West Pittston, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Mikal Myers (Newburgh, N.Y.) are splitting time at nose guard this season, and had a dominant performance against the Stony Brook front on Sept. 6. Campenni tied a career-high with six tackles, making 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Myers set a new career-high with four tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and his first career sack. Myers had another big performance at Tulane on Oct. 11, notching two more tackles for loss. Fellow interior lineman B.J. McBryde (Beaver Falls, Pa.) had a career-high six tackles at USF on Sept. 19, including his first career tackle for loss. Defensive end Kenton Adeyemi (Wethersfield, Conn.) recorded his first career sack on Sept. 27 vs. Temple and had a career-high nine stops on Oct. 23 at East Carolina.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES NEW FACES IN KICK GAME UConn has a pair of new faces in both the kicking and punting department this season with the graduation of PK Chad Christen and P Cole Wagner. Wagner is second in UConn career punting average with 40.7 yards. Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) is now the starting kicker this season after redshirting in 2013. He has converted nine of 11 field goals in his career, knocking down five straight to start this season. Puyol set a new career-high with a 44-yard boot against Tulane on Oct. 11 and is 16-for-18 on extra points this season. He also took over punting duties against Temple on Sept. 27, booting six times with a long of 41 yards and two punts downed inside the 20. Redshirt sophomore Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) is now the primary punter and the BYU contest was his first game action. Wain has 53 punts this season for an average of 39.4 yards per boot. Fourteen of his 49 punts have been inside the opponents 20-yard line – including six of his nine vs. Stony Brook on Sept. 6. Wain has also seen nearly half (24) of his punts go for fair catches and has launched five at least 50 yards. He was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for his performance vs. SBU and had a season-long 56-yard boot at USF on Sept. 19. Both Wain and Puyol were members of the 2013 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Freshman Chase Briley (Hartford, Conn.), who played at Capital Prep High School, will be the backup at both kicker and punter. THE RETURN GAME Senior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) provided a spark for the Huskies on Saturday, Sept. 6 when he returned a third-quarter punt 72-yards for a touchdown to give UConn a 19-10 lead with 9:22 left in the period against Stony Brook. This is Foxx’s first season returning punts and now has seven returns for 91 yards. He is second in the American Athletic Conference at 13.0 yards per punt return and is 14th nationally. Foxx was named the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after the Stony Brook game and the ECAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. Foxx’s punt return for a TD was the first for UConn since Nick Williams had an 80-yarder vs. Pittsburgh on Nov. 9, 2012 at Rentschler Field. Foxx has also been part of the rotation for kickoff returns for the Huskies and has three for 48 yards this year. Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) leads the Huskies in that category with 27 returns for 565 yards. His only return at Tulane on Oct. 11 was his longest of the season, a 47-yard burst to mark the best UConn kick return this year. Brian Lemelle (Harrisburg, Pa.) entered the kick return rotation at East Carolina on Oct. 23, returning four for 91 yards with a long of 28.

Nov. 22 vs. Cincinnati Game Notes STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES RENTSCHLER FIELD The Huskies moved into Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn entered its 12th season of play there on Friday. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites. UConn has an all-time record of 50-27 at Rentschler Field and a 27-13 mark in non-conference games. UConn has played to 92.1-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,798,896 fans, or an average of 36,829 per game. UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rentschler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - BYU junior quarterback Taysom Hill threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another two as the Cougars defeated the University of Connecticut football team in the 2014 opener for both teams. The game was played before a crowd of 35,150 at Rentschler Field and was the debut for new UConn head coach Bob Diaco. Hill completed 28 of 36 passes to nine receivers without an interception. He went 17 of 20 to lead the Cougars to a 28-7 halftime advantage, and was BYU’s leading rusher with 97 yards on 12 carries. “He was resilient and methodical and 28 points in the first half was ideal and that was something I was hoping to see,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. The Cougars put up 513 yards of offense, 329 of that before intermission. Husky sophomore Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) and senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) split quarterback duties and threw for a combined 284 yards. Cochran was 17 of 31 for 171 yards. He also threw an interception on the Huskies’ second drive deep in BYU territory. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards. “That’s the point you’re at right now,” Diaco said, who played 50 players combined on offense and defense. “For the players to get better, they have to play in games.” BYU got off to a quick start as Hill, who last year ran for more than 1,300 yards and passed for just under 3,000, capped the Cougars’ opening 15play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard run. He then found Mitch Mathews wide open over the middle from 26 yards out, after UConn fumbled on the Huskies’ first offensive play. Hill danced away from pressure late in the first half and found Terenn Houk open to his left for a 35-yard touchdown catch-and-run that made it 28-7 at the half. The quarterback capped the game with a 26-yard touchdown run to complete a 90-yard, fourth-quarter drive that sent the fans to the exits. Penalties slowed the game down as BYU committed 15 of them for 150 yards. UConn was flagged eight times for 90 yards. A fumble by BYU’s Mathews at midfield led to UConn’s only touchdown. Whitmer led the Huskies on a six-play drive that ended with freshman redshirt Josh Marriner (Chesapeake, Va.) scoring from a yard out in the second quarter. Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) made a 35yard field goal for UConn in the fourth quarter. The Huskies put together an 11-play drive to start the second half, but failed after faking a 40-yard field goal. UConn’s top receiver, senior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), finished with seven catches for 96 yards. He spent some time in the fourth quarter in the locker room, but returned before the end of the game.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) had a 72-yard punt return a touchdown in the third quarter to help lead the Husky football team to a 19-16 win over Stony Brook on Saturday at Rentschler Field before a crowd of 23,543. The win improves UConn to 1-1 on the season and gives Husky head coach Bob Diaco his first career college head coaching win. Stony Brook falls to 0-2 on the season. UConn redshirt senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) caught six passes for 113 yards and a 30-yard touchdown and moved into seventh place on the Huskies all-time receiving list with 1,980 career yards. “It took us 10 weeks last year just to get one win,” Davis said. “A win is a win. These guys fought hard -- defense, offense and special teams.” The Seawolves, from the powerful Colonial Athletic Association, led much of the first half and trailed just 12-10 at halftime. Foxx gave UConn a 19-10 lead in the third quarter when he grabbed a 61-yard Luke Allen punt that had bounced over his head, turned left, then reversed field and found a seam down the middle. “He definitely outkicked his coverage,” Foxx. “I got a lucky bounce and when I was turning around I noticed that I had a whole lot of field to work with, so I just did what I can do and I had great blockers.” Stony Brook, which outgained UConn 300 yards to 223, put together a 14play, 88-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Conor Bednarski to Will Tye. The Seawolves failed to recover an onside kick and could not move the ball after getting in back in the final minute deep in their own territory. UConn opened the game with a five-play, 40-yard drive that ended with a 42-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.), who added a 27-yarder in the second quarter. Stony Brook took a 7-3 first-quarter lead after a punt pinned UConn on its own one-yard line. Safety Max Martinez then stripped the ball and Naim Cheeseboro recovered in the end zone. The Seawolves added another field goal late in the quarter after a UConn fumble, giving Stony Brook the ball at the Husky 20-yard line The Huskies had just 63 yards of offense before putting together a 70-yard drive late in the second quarter that put UConn up to stay. Redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) found Davis in the right corner of the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked. Whitmer completed 12 of 27 passes for 142 yards. He also was the Huskies leading rusher with 52 yards on 13 carries. UConn was also helped by its kicking game. Puyol’s first field goal was the longest of his career and redshirt freshman punter Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) averaged 41.8 yards on nine punts. Stony Brook was forced to start six second-half drives inside its own 20-yard line. “The team today showed a lot of grit and grind,” said Diaco. “Our brotherhood shined through. Our culture shined through.”

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Boise State quarterback Grant Hedrick threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Matt Miller and caught one from the senior WR on a trick play as Boise State beat the University of Connecticut football team 38-21 on Saturday before a crowd of 30,098 at Rentschler Field. The Huskies drop to 1-2 on the season while Boise improves their record to 2-1. The Broncos, who put up 676 yards of offense a week ago against Colorado State, were limited to 292 yards by the Husky defense. Boise State took advantage of UConn offensive miscues by scoring 14 points on turnovers. The Broncos scored on a fumble recovery in the first quarter and an interception in the fourth. Boise held UConn to 48 yards rushing and sacked the Huskies quarterbacks eight times. Boise State, which ran 89 plays a week ago (60 in the first half alone) had just 56 this week. They did not have an offense snap for the first eight minutes of the game, but by that time the Broncos were up 7-3. UConn fumbled on its fifth play from scrimmage and Boise’s Tanner Vallejo picked the ball up in the backfield and ran untouched 31-yards for a touchdown. Hedrick found Miller for a 35-yard score in the second quarter, and Miller returned the favor on a trick play a few minutes later, hitting Hedrick for a seven-yard touchdown after getting the ball on an end-around. Boise led at the half 21-10. UConn closed the gap to 24-21 in the third quarter. Shane Williams-Rhodes muffed a punt return and UConn redshirt sophomore linebacker Jon Hicks (Palmyra, Pa.) recovered. UConn redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) then found redshirt senior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) for a 10-yard touchdown and hit freshman running back Arkeel Newsome for a two-point conversion (Ansonia, Conn.) to close it to 24-21 Boise. Boise’s Jonathan Moxey made a key fourth-quarter interception at the UConn 37-yard line. That led to a nine-yard touchdown pass from Hedrick to Miller in the back of the end zone that made it 31-21. Hedrick completed 19 of 27 passes for 233 yards and two scores. The Broncos got their second defensive score with four minutes left in the game when Donte Deayon ripped the ball and ran 50 yards down the right sideline for a score that made the final 38-21. Whitmer drove UConn 83 yards for its first touchdown, finding senior wide receiver Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) down the left sideline for a 48-yard reception and hitting freshman tight end Alex Bloom (Ligonier, Pa.) over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead. Foxx finished with 107 yards receiving on six catches. Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, who came in averaging 158 yards a game and nearly six yards a run, was held to just 39 yards on 18 carries.

Chris Dunkley sacked Husky redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.), forcing a fumble that the USF cornerback recovered at the Huskies 19 to set up Mack’s TD for a quick 7-0 lead. UConn pulled with three points on Whitmer’s 32-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) with 1:19 Tice Mack remaining. USF recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. It was another close game in a series USF leads 7-5. The last eight meetings have been decided by seven or fewer points, and neither team has scored more than 19 in the last five matchups. The Huskies managed just 41 yards and on 18 plays in the first half and finished with a season-low 145 yards overall - more than half coming on the drive that ended with Whitmer’s TD pass to Davis. UConn didn’t pick up its second first down of the night until freshman running back Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) broke a 16-yard run midway through the third quarter. Three plays later, Whitmer got his first completion.

Temple responded with quarterback P.J. Walker ultimately finding Jalen Fitzpatrick, who finished with 108 yards receiving, for a 42-yard pass play and a 14-3 lead.

UConn redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Williams 4-1-5 Ga.) was 17 of 24 for 141 yards and the Huskies took an early 3-0 Melifonwu 4-1-5 lead on a career-long 44-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.). Tulane gained 167 yards on the ground, led by Sherman Badie’s 77 yards on 14 carries. Montana completed 19 of 26 passes for 135 yards in his first start this season. Montana was Tulane’s starter a season ago as a junior, helping the Green Wave to a 7-6 record and its first bowl bid in more than a decade. He played with an injured throwing shoulder that season and in August, he lost his job to redshirt freshman Tanner Lee. Lee injured his shoulder vs. Rutgers two weeks ago. Montana hit his first four passes for 53 yards, including a 21-yarder over the middle, and his seven-yard scoring strike to Charles Jones to make it 7-3. Tulane took a 9-3 lead when defensive end Tyler Gilbert surged into the backfield and cut down UConn for a safety - a play set up by Peter Picerelli’s 38-yard punt to the UConn one-yard line. Green Wave freshman kicker Andrew DiRocco, who missed four of five field goal attempts entering the game, hit a career-long 38-yarder in the fourth quarter to make it 12-3. That field goal attempt was possible after Montana spun away from what looked like a certain third-down sack, rolled right and threw back across his body for a 10-yard, first-down completion to Justyn Shackleford.

Carden threw for a season-high 445 yards - his seventh career 400-yard performance - on 38-of-64 passing, and Breon Allen ran for two touchdowns. They helped the Pirates (6-1, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) sidestep a major upset bid by underdog UConn (1-6, 0-4) in East Carolina’s first prime-time, weeknight showcase game in its new league. Warren Harvey kicked the go-ahead 31-yard field goal with 6:15 left, Carden threw touchdown passes of 13 yards to Justin Hardy and 10 yards to Bryce Williams, and Allen scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards. “There are no moral victories,” first-year UConn coach Bob Diaco said. “We didn’t come here to play well. We came here to win a football game, and we didn’t.” Carden started the Pirates’ go-ahead drive with a 30-yard throw to Hardy one play before Allen’s 23-yard run to the 12. When that drive stalled, Harvey - who earlier missed from 33 yards - kicked his field goal to make it 24-21. East Carolina forced a three-and-out, got the ball back with 5:22 left and ran most of the clock before Allen iced it with his 9-yard scoring run with 1:25 remaining. Whitmer’s 32-yard TD to Noel Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.) made it a 14-all game. His 88-yard catch-and-run to Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) - after cornerback Josh Hawkins whiffed on the coverage - pulled UConn to 21-all with 3:43 left in the third. The first came when Hardy laid out in the end zone to catch his TD. Carden’s scoring pass to Williams made it 14-0 not even 10 minutes in. Whitmer countered with a short scoring plunge on fourth-and-goal from the East Carolina 1 on the next possession. Thomas had a career day with three receptions for 57 yards, while Foxx finished with 120 receiving yards for his fourth-career 100-yard day. Jefferson Ashiru (Powder Springs, Ga.) led UConn with 11 tackles, and Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) each made 10 stops.

to lead the University of Connecticut football team to a 37-29 Homecoming victory over UCF on Saturday before a soggy crowd of 28,751 at Rentschler Field. The win improves UConn’s record to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the American Athletic Association while the Knights fall to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the league. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for UConn and was the first conference loss for UCF, which had won 11 straight since the inception of the AAC last year. Sophomore running back William Stanback had a career-high 141 yards rushing and two touchdowns for UCF. Quarterback Justin Holman threw for 284 yards and two scores. but he also threw four interceptions, three of them to UConn redshirt junior safety Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.). Foxx, who normally plays wide receiver, ran the Huskies option package, carrying the ball 11 times, including a 68-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with 12:22 to go in the second quarter. UConn had not scored more than 21 points in a game this season. The win capped an emotional homecoming for UConn, which unveiled a memorial at halftime to Jasper Howard, a cornerback who tragically passed away in 2009. The Huskies went three-and-out on their first five drives and had been outgained 113 yards to 19 before Foxx’s first carry in the second quarter. He sprinted 68 yards down the left sideline to tie the game at seven and his 20-yard run in the fourth quarter helped the Huskies to a 37-21 lead. Thomas caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first half and had a 22-yard catch in the third quarter that gave UConn a 10-point lead. UCF’s Stanback had 73 yards in the first quarter and 108 yards by halftime. He scored on a three-yard run to make it 7-0, and a one-yard plunge that gave the Knights a 14-7 lead. The Huskies took their first lead at 17-14 when redshirt sophomore kicker Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a 38-yarder at the end of the first half. That was set up by an interception and 43-yard return by Adams. UCF took the lead back in the third quarter when J.J. Worton caught a pass from Holman in the middle of the field, cut back to his right and outran the UConn defense for a 73-yard touchdown. The Huskies responded with a 79-yard drive, scoring on a fourth-down run from freshman Ron Johnson (Naples, Fla.), the first of his two scores. His second was a two-yard run that put the Huskies up by 16 points after a missed extra point.

The Huskies fall to 2-7 on the season while Army is 3-6. UConn pulled to within 28-21 with 2:06 to go, recovered the onside kick, and marched all the way to the six-yard line before Carnegie picked off a pass of senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) at the one and ran it all the way back to clinch it. Whitmer had two touchdowns on 19-of-31 passing for 171 yards and added another score on the ground for the Huskies. Army quarterback Angel Santiago ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries to lead a balanced rushing attack. The Black Knights never trailed but almost faced overtime before Carnegie’s clutch pick-six. Joe Walker added two touchdowns on the ground for the Black Knights, who racked up 327 rushing yards to break a three-game losing streak. Whitmer didn’t get hot until late. Facing fourth-and-six with 12:54 left in the game, UConn stayed alive when Whitmer found redshirt junior tight end Sean McQuillan (Glastonbury, Conn.) over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown to pull to within 21-14. Army responded on third-and-goal with 4:22 remaining, when Santiago barely broke the goal line to go up 28-14. UConn cut it to 28-21 with 2:06 left on Whitmer’s one-yard completion to sophomore Noel Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.). Freshman Jamar Summers (East Orange, N.J.) recovered the onside kick for UConn when Army’s A.J. Schurr couldn’t secure it. Whitmer then broke loose for 26 yards on the opening play of the drive and picked up another first down two plays later with 1:20 to go. The nation’s No. 5 rushing offense, Army’s crafty triple option had no trouble against UConn’s 27th-best rushing defense. Some timely conversions and lengthy drives were a potent mix for Army, which pushed ahead by two touchdowns on the opening drive of the second half. Following its second fourth-down conversion from inside the six-yard line, Army went up 21-7 midway through the third on a pitch to Walker, who turned the corner for a twoyard touchdown. The Black Knights were back in UConn territory with 2:04 left in the first half when Santiago fumbled on a scramble. Redshirt freshman Junior Joseph (Sinking Spring, Pa.) recovered, giving the Huskies a crucial chance to get on the board before halftime. The Huskies didn’t waste the opportunity as Whitmer, back under center, found Thomas for a 26-yard pass to Army’s 32 before redshirt junior Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.), untouched through the middle, broke off a 26-yard run on his first carry.
