TOURNAMENT TIME: For the ninth consecutive season, UConn will participate in a November tournament --- this year, it is the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament will consist of four games for the Huskies, the first two at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs and the final two at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 2K Sports Classic, a 12-team tourney, has four main regional sites --Storrs, Chestnut Hill (Mass.), Bloomington (Ind.), and Seattle. Each of the regional host schools --- UConn, Boston College, Indiana, and Washington -- will entertain two opponents before moving on to Madison Square Garden. The eight remaining schools will also move on to play three more games at two sub-regional sites. The Huskies face Detroit on Nov. 14 (7 p.m.) and meet Boston University on Nov. 17 (noon), both at Gampel Pavilion. On Nov. 21, UConn will move into the championship round of the 2K Sports UCONN IN GAMPEL OPENERS: UConn is starting its 25th season at Gampel Pavilion on the campus at Storrs and has never lost its Gampel Pavilion opener. Since the building opened in 1990, the Huskies have won 24 consecutive games in their Gampel Pavilion season debut. UCONN OVERALL IN GAMPEL: UConn has an overall record of 149-23 (.866) at Gampel Pavilion since the building opened in 1990. The Huskies are 72-4 (.947) against non-league competition and 77-19 (.802) against BIG EAST opponents in Gampel. The four nonconference losses came against Detriot Mercy in the 2001 NIT, Jackson St. in the 1993 NIT, Florida St. in the 1992-93 season, and North Carolina St. in the 1990-91 season. Since the loss to Detroit Mercy, the Huskies have won 39 straight non-conference games in Gampel. UConn is 24-6 in Gampel over the last four

Napier’s previous triple double came during his sophomore season, on Nov. 20, 2011, when he had 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists against Coppin State. Napier owns two of the 10 triple doubles in UConn history. Also helping the Huskies defeat Yale was sophomore Omar Calhoun, who scored a game-high 18 points, senior Niels Giffey, who tallied 15 on 5-of-6 three-pointers, and junior Ryan Boatright, who poured in 14 points, as the Huskies went to 2-0 on the season.

UCONN HUSKIES IN THE NBA At the start of the 2013-14 NBA season, UConn ranked among the top seven college programs in the country in current number of NBA players. Kentucky tops the list with 21 players in the NBA, followed by North Carolina (16), Duke (15), Kansas (14), UCLA (13), and UConn and Florida with 12 each. The Huskies will tie UCLA should 14-year NBA veteran Richard Hamilton, a free agent, signs with a team as is expected. The 12 former Huskies are with eight different NBA franchises, and total a combined 88 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn dozen are led by Ray Allen (Heat), in his 18th NBA season, and Caron Butler (Bucks), in his 12th NBA season. The 10 other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Emeka Okafor (Suns) and Ben Gordon (Bobcats), each in the midst of his 10th year, Charlie Villanueva (Pistons), in his 9th year, Rudy Gay (Raptors), in his 8th season, Hasheem Thabeet (Thunder) and A.J. STATE OF THE ART: UConn’s 80-62 win over Yale on Nov. 11 was the 68th straight win for the Huskies over an opponent from Connecticut. UConn’s last loss to an in-state foe came against Hartford, 49-48, on Dec. 29, 1986. Since that game, the Huskies are 17-0 vs. Fairfield, 13-0 vs. Hartford, 13-0 vs. Yale, 10-0 vs. Quinnipiac, 9-0 vs. Central Connecticut, 5-0 vs. Sacred Heart, and 1-0 vs. Southern Connecticut. The Huskies do not play any other Connecticut opponents during this regular season. THRILLING START: UConn’s 2013-14 season got off to a thrilling start on Nov. 8 with a 7877 victory over Maryland before 12,687 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Huskies led from start to finish, but watched their 17-point lead melt to two before senior Tyler Olander canned a three-pointer with 1:58 left. Maryland came within one, but three straight defensive stops clinched the win for UConn. Senior Shabazz Napier led the Huskies in points (18), rebounds (7), and assists (7), while senior Niels Giffey had 13 points and sophomore Omar Calhoun added 10. The Huskies shot 51.7 percent for the game, handed out 16 assists and had 10 steals.

the Preseason Top 50 for the John R. Wooden Award. The Cousy Award watch list includes 45 of the top point guards in the nation. That list will be narrowed to 20 in early February and then to a final five by early March and the winner will be announced on Championship Monday in Dallas. UConn’s Kemba Walker won the Cousy Award in 2010-11. The Senior CLASS Award, which combines on and off the court achievements, will be narrowed to a list of 10 finalists. The winner will come from a vote by the public and will be announced during the Final Four. The Robertson Trophy, awarded to the Player of the Year, will be announced the week following the Final Four. CONTRACT EXTENSION: UConn head coach Kevin Ollie signed a contract extension on Dec. 29, 2012, that will run through the 2017-18 season. Ollie was named to succeed Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun on Sept. 13, 2012, and had signed a seven-month contract that was set to expire in March. Ollie’s new contract went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013. CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn junior Ryan Boatright owns the

longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 47 straight games. ALL-TIME LISTS: With 14 points against Yale, UConn senior Shabazz Napier now has 1,271 career points, and has moved up to No. 29 on the Huskies’ all-time scoring list. No. 28 on the list is Vin Yokabaskas 1,275 points. Napier also has 468 assists, No. 10 in that category. No. 9 is A.J. Price with 469. With 32 more assists, Napier will become only the fourth player in UConn history with 1,000 points and 500 assists (Doron Sheffer, Tate George, Taliek Brown). DOUBLE-DOUBLE DANIELS: UConn junior DeAndre Daniels recorded the Huskies’ only two double-doubles of the 201213 season, on Feb. 27 against Georgetown (25 points, 10 rebounds) and against USF on March 6 (23 points, 10 rebounds).

A Look At The Detroit Titans UConn and Detroit have met only once on the basketball court, but it was a significant game in UConn history. In the second round of the 2001 postseason NIT, Detroit (known then primarily as Detroit Mercy) defeated the Huskies, 67-61, at Gampel Pavilion, led by a combined 51 points from guards Rashad Phillips and Willie Green. It was only the fourth time the UConn had lost to a non-conference opponent at Gampel and it remains the last time the Huskies lost to a non-conference foe in their on-campus home. Since then, UConn has won 39 consecutive games against non-conference opponents in Gampel. The Titans, playing out of the Horizon League, have been rejuventated under six-year coach Ray McCallum Sr. Two years ago, they won a bid to the NCAA Tournament and last season they posted a 2013 overall record, 12-4 in the

conference, finishing second only to Valparaiso. Detroit went to the NIT, bowing to Arizona State in the first round. The Titans (1-1) have lost four starters from that team, but have built this season around returning starting forward Juwan Howard Jr., who leads the team in scoring (20.0 ppg) and rebounding (10.5 rpg), and is shooting 45.5 percent from 3-point range. Guards Anton Wilson and Jarod Williams, along with forward Evan Bruinsma, are each averaging 11.5 ppg, with guard Carlton Brundidge at 8.5 ppg. The fifth starter for Detroit is 6-10 senior center Njoku Ugochukwu, who is pulling down 9.0 rebounds per game. So far this season, Detroit lost its season opener at South Alabama, 74-58, then came home to romp over MichiganDearborn, an NAIA school, 106-51.

SEEING DOUBLE: In the final 2012-13 season statistics, UConn had four players averaging double figures. Shabazz Napier led the scoring parade at 17.1 points per game, followed by Ryan Boatright (15.4), DeAndre Daniels (12.1), and Omar Calhoun (11.1). CLOSER TO HOME: Last season, UConn piled up the frequent flyer miles early in the season by opening with a trip to Ramstein, Germany, to play Michigan State in the Armed Forces Classic, and following it one week later by flying to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to play in the Paradise Jam. ing the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regularseason championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. UConn coach Kevin Ollie accepts the Ben Jobe Award from Jobe, the former Southern University coach. 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas Eve,” said Ollie. “What a Christmas present that was.” Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach. Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be

all about, and when you say that, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy.
