Home of UConn Lacrosse George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex The University of Connecticut lacrosse program plays its home games at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, a $3.7 million athletic facility located adjacent to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the heart of UConn’s main campus in Storrs. The 2007 season marked the first year that the Huskies played all their games on the turf, after years of splitting time at the grass field in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. A financial gift of more than $650,000 to UConn’s Athletic Development Fund by Lottie K. Sherman of West Hartford helped provide the necessary funding for the project. The entire complex bears the name of Lottie K. Sherman’s husband, George J. Sherman. Opened during the 1995-96 academic year, the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex features a new Astroturf 12 field and watering system that was installed during the summer of 2008. The new surface gives UConn lacrosse and field hockey programs one of the finest on-campus collegiate facilities in the nation. The complex also includes an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track surface, as well as seating for 2,000 fans, full-field lighting to permit night games, a press box and a scoreboard with electronic message capabilities. Before the start of the 2010 season the lacrosse locker room in the Hugh S. Greer Field House was renovated, giving each student-athlete their own locker with enclosed storage spaces.

Mark R. Shenkman Training Center Thanks to alumnus Mark R. Shenkman, the University of Connecticut has joined the ranks of major universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that is utilized by all the varsity sport teams and also by recreational services. The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the country. Featuring a 120-yard long state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area and state-of-theart video capabilities, the indoor training center provides all the varsity teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment. The UConn lacrosse team has the use of the weight room in Shenkman. The facility features custom made multi-use racks with platforms, dumbbell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.

Goal Line Project

The UConn lacrosse team visited a group of East Hartford Middle School students in November, taking part in the Sports Safety Zone Clinic as part of the Goal Line Project. The Huskies talked with students about the importance of having an active and healthy lifestyle. They demonstrated proper exercise techniques, and taught the students how to maintain a healthy diet. The Goal Line program was made possible by the SBM Charitable Foundation, an organization created to benefit at-risk youth by connecting them with student-athlete mentors.

Huskies In The Community Husky Reach

This past September, several UConn lacrosse players participated in the annual Husky Reach BBQ Kickoff at Verplanck Elementary School in Machester, Conn.. The Huskies took time to get to know the students, and they played sports with them outside on the school’s field facility. Different community service initiatives that the Huskies participate in throughout the year include Nutmeg Big Brothers-Big Sisters, teaching children around Connecticut about lacrosse and volunteering for Husky Sport, a program to promote physical fitness and good nutrition. As part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the lacrosse team also sponsors a variety of collection drives for food, toys and coats to support charities in the local area.

The

UCONN LACROSSE Experience

“I chose UConn because it was the perfect balance between receiving a top-notch education and getting the opportunity to play for one of the best athletics programs in the country. I couldn’t have chose a better way to spend the past four years of me life.” - Marya Fratoni.

“I chose UConn because it provided me with an opportunity that would challenge my potential on the field and in the classroom” - Maggie Tripodi

“I chose UConn because it is a big school that has strong academics and athletics.” - Jessica Beer

“I came to UConn because of the close athletic community and because the athletes are accomodated so well here.” - Carly Palmucci

Katie Woods enters her fifth season at UConn in 2015 after leading the Huskies to a 10-7 overall record and a second straight appearance in the Big East Tournament in 2014. In four years as the coach of UConn lacrosse, Woods has compiled a 42-25 (.627) record, good for the highest winning percentage in program history. This January, Woods was inducted into the CT Lacrosse Hall of Fame along with six other honorees. The Connecticut native, who was a three-sport athlete in high school, was recognized in a ceremony on Jan. 30 in Milford, Conn. Connecticut won at least 10 games for the third straight season in 2014, and four players were named to the All-Big East First Team, including sophomore defender Lauren Kwasnowski, who earned her first All-Conference honors. Senior midfielder Lauren Kahn and sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Nee were again named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Northeast Region First Team after leading the Huskies to a third place finish in the Big East. Connecticut ended the year with a 5-2 record in conference play and won nine of its last 11 regular season games. The Huskies fell in the Big East Semifinals for the second straight year, as they lost to Georgetown, 16-8, in Washington D.C. In 2013, Woods helped the Huskies make history, as Connecticut finished the season 13-5 and clinched a berth in both the BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Kahn was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and was selected to the All-BIG EAST and IWLCA All-Region First Team. Nee was also selected to the IWLCA All-Region First Team, and Nee, senior attacker Morgan O’Reilly and junior attacker Kacey Pippitt were all named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Woods led Connecticut to a 10-6 mark in 2012, including a 3-5 record in the Big East Conference. Under her guidance, senior attack M.E. Lapham was named First Team All-Region and All-Big East First Team for the second straight year. Woods also coached sophomore midfielder Lauren Kahn to Second Team All-Region and All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. In her first year at the helm of UConn lacrosse in 2011, Woods guided the Huskies to a 9-7 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Under her tutelage, M.E. Lapham had a record-setting season, notching 55 goals to set the UConn season mark. Lapham also went on to earn All-Big East First Team honors and was later selected to the IWLCA All-Region First Team. Woods joined the University of Connecticut as the head women’s lacrosse coach in 2011 after serving in the same role for the previous four years at American University. During her time at American, the Eagles collected 23 all-conference selections, five Patriot League Player of the Year honors and 72 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades. Following the 2008 season Woods was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 5-1 record in league play and a share of the regular season championship. In 2007, her first season as head coach at American, Woods led the Eagles to a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2003 and matched the record for most victories for a first-year head coach. Woods amassed 26 wins in four seasons as head coach at American including 12 in league play, and led her team to the championship game of the Patriot League tournament during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Before Woods joined the American coaching staff she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Brown University in 2005 and `06. At Brown, she coached the offensive unit and assisted in coaching the goalkeepers. Woods oversaw the recruiting operations for all prospective student-athletes and served as the area recruiting coordinator for the New England region. During the 2004 season Woods was the first assistant at Cornell where she worked with the attack and aided in player development. With the Big Red she also planned team travel and was responsible for recruiting and film breakdown. Prior to her time at Cornell, Woods served as an assistant coach at Davidson for the 2003 season where she helped plan practices and organized recruiting efforts in addition to coaching during contests. Woods also spent a year at Ithaca College in 2002 as a graduate assistant coach for both women’s soccer and lacrosse. While at Ithaca, she earned her master’s in exercise and sports sciences. Woods was a two-sport athlete at Drew, where she played lacrosse and soccer. She was a four-time All-Conference selection in lacrosse, also picking up two Regional All-America and one National All-America award. Woods also excelled in the classroom as a two-time Scholar Athlete award winner. She graduated with a degree in psychology in May 2001. Lauren Gunning, who played lacrosse at Connecticut from 2008-11, enters her first year as an assistant coach for the Huskies after being hired in June of 2014. The Hunt Valley, Md. native returned to Storrs following a four-year coaching stint at the University of Cincinnati from 2011-2014. Gunning worked primarily with the Bearcats’ offensive unit and spent time developing Cincinnati’s goalkeepers. She also aided in the team’s recruiting and scouting efforts, helping the Bearcats tie a program record with seven wins in 2013. Prior to Cincinnati, Gunning was an assistant coach in the fall of 2011 at Iona, where she worked directly with the attack unit and assisted the head coach in running daily practices. She has participated in several camps throughout her coaching career, including Game On Lacrosse Camp at UConn, Duke Lacrosse Camp and the Triple Threat Lacrosse Camp. Gunning tallied 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) while playing for the Huskies and she was named to the Big East All-Academic Team in each of her four seasons at Connecticut. She recorded a career-high seven goals as a senior, leading the Huskies to a 9-7 overall record in Woods’ first year as head coach. Forrest Stillwell enters his first season with UConn after being hired this past fall. Stillwell comes to UConn after spending four years as an assistant coach at Bucknell University, where he helped the Bison earn their first Patriot League victory in 2013, and win a program-best two conference wins last year. He served as the goalie coach as well as the defensive coordinator and transition game coach throughout his time at Bucknell, and he also assisted in recruiting efforts. The Bison improved dramatically following Stillwell’s arrival, as they led the Patriot League in caused turnovers in 2013, and finished second in the statistical category last season. They were second in the league in draw controls from 2012-13 before finishing fifth last year with 167 draw controls. “I am really excited to welcome Forrest to UConn,” UConn women’s lacrosse coach Katie Woods said. “I think he has a strong passion for coaching and he has established himself as a great coach and recruiter. He’s going to be a great addition to our staff.” The former Bucknell assistant coach arrives in Storrs with a wealth of experience at the club level, and he has participated in a variety of camps throughout his coaching career. In 2012, he was involved with the Triple Threat, Duke Elite and PSU Camp, and last year he took part in the Syracuse Team Camp as well as a camp with the University of Florida, which recently became an associate member of Big East women’s lacrosse. Stillwell, a 2001 graduate of Auburn University, served as the head coach for the varsity girls’ lacrosse team at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta, Ga. from 2007-11. Dean’s List & Honor Roll The UConn women’s lacrosse team has been honored seven times by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an IWLCA Academic Squad. To earn the distinction, the team must have earned greater than a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Kristen Haldeman concluded her Connecticut career in 2005 as the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior goalie graduated with a 3.92 GPA in biomedical engineering following her first season in the starting lineup to earn the honor. Twenty-eight UConn lacrosse juniors and seniors have also been individually recognized by the IWLCA as Academic All-Americans since 2002, earning a GPA of 3.5 or better. Below is a list of Lacrosse student-athletes who have been named to the UConn Dean’s List or those that have earned a 3.0 GPA or better during the semester. Fall 2002

Alumni Reflections Lauren Kahn - 2014

“It is very hard to put into words what being a part of the UConn Women’s Lacrosse has meant to me. As a high school athlete trying to make the biggest decision of your life it can become very nerve wracking; but from the moment I stepped onto to campus I knew that this place was going to be my home. I will truly never be a part of another community quite like the one I had at the University of Connecticut. Being able to say I played lacrosse for this amazing school is one of the greatest honors I could ever have. When I put on that jersey I was playing for something bigger than myself and that is such a rewarding feeling. The memories I made will be something I will carry on with me for the rest of my life.

Liz Brown - 2013

“Throughout my four years of college, I had never felt more proud and humbled to be part of such an amazing school and community than when I put on my UConn lacrosse jersey. Being a part of a team is one of the most rewarding experiences one can have in life, and being on a team at UConn for me was an even greater honor. The friendships that I built during my four years and the relationships that I still have today with my teammates are ones that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Looking back on my career as a Husky makes me appreciate everything my team and I experienced - the good and bad, which we did all together.”

Ashley Mitchelides - 2010 “Attending UConn and being a member of the women’s lacrosse team was truly an opportunity that I will always be grateful for. I am thankful for all the experiences I had over the years and have met some truly amazing people. Reflecting on my time at UConn, it is a special and rewarding group to be a part of; one that has left an imprint on me as I move onto the next phase of life. Through thick and thin, my experience was one of constant growth and has prepared me for all to come. The perspective I have now, leaves me even more appreciative of those who supported, encouraged and believed in me at UConn. From teammates and coaches to classmates and friends, being a Husky is something I will always cherish!”

Leah Giffin - 2008 “My experience as an athlete at UConn gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of place in Storrs. You feel a sense of pride when you put on that blue and white jersey which represents so much more than yourself. Being a part of the UConn lacrosse family sculpted me into the person I am today. Although I had my ups and downs throughout my lacrosse career, I knew there were always 24 other people who understood me. They know what you have been through and they stand by your side. I now have the opportunity to coach and I strive to get my players to understand the true meaning of the word ‘team.’ I try and teach them what I have learned through my own experiences, that your jersey is much more than a shirt, that the people you play with are much more than teammates, that the hour long battles are much more than games.”

The semifinals will take place on Apr. 30 and the championship will be on May 2 at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex on the UConn campus. This spring will mark the first time UConn has ever hosted the conference’s postseason tournament, which will be broadcasted by the Big

The Huskies, who enter this season with at least 10 wins in each of the last three years, qualified for the Big East tournament for the first time in program history in 2013. After falling to Syracuse in the semifinals, Connecticut returned to the postseason tournament last year. They exited in the semifinal round once again, losing to host Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas have hosted the tournament four times, the most among current Big East schools.

The past two Big East champions, Syracuse (2013) and Louisville (2014), have both left the league, while Florida and Vanderbilt have joined the Big East as associate members. The Gators, who won 18 games and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2014, play UConn for the first time ever this spring on Apr. 18 in Storrs. Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes

The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past four years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaison to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet as well as reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library. Writing tutors are available each weeknight in the CPIA office. CPIA also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon request. A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn lacrosse program is Ingrid Hohmann. Hohmann monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree. The goal for each Husky student-athlete is to earn a degree so they can become a success in whatever field they choose.

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for each student-athlete. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the UConn sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 600 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

Anna Zamora Strength & Conditioning

The strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut lacrosse student-athletes is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Graduate Assistant Anna Zamora. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate sports. UConn lacrosse players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky players areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn student-athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training, and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. The staff supervises a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning, and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each lacrosse player.
