The Coaches connecticut head coach paul pasqualoni UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni made his Husky coaching debut a successful one on Sept. 3, 2011 as the Huskies topped Fordham of the FCS. The Cheshire, Conn. native was named the 28th head football coach in UConn history on January 14, 2011.

Pasqualoni is the all-time winningest coach in BIG EAST Conference league wins with 65 and overall wins with 113. He is just one of two league coaches in history to win four BIG EAST Championships. His overall college coaching record stands at 147-83-1 (34-17 at WCSU, 107-59-1 at Syracuse and 6-8 at UConn).

Pasqualoni has had a highly-successful career on all levels of football -- professional, college and high school. He was the head coach at Western Connecticut from 1982-86 and led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1985.

He had an extremely successful tenure as the head coach at Syracuse from 1991-2004. Pasqualoni led the Orange to 107 wins, four BIG EAST titles and a 6-3 postseason record. Among his bowl appearances at Syracuse were two Fiesta Bowls (1992 and ‘97) and an Orange Bowl (‘98).

For the previous five seasons, Pasqualoni has served on NFL staffs -- with Dallas in 2006-07 and ‘10 and with Miami in 2008-09.

His first coaching job was an assistant coach at Cheshire HS from 1972-75.

He is a 1972 Penn State graduate.

Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall Randy Edsall is in his second year as the head coach at Maryland and has a 4-10 record at the school. He was the head coach at Connecticut from 1999-2010 with a 74-70 record and set school records for most career games coached and victories.

Edsall oversaw Connecticut transition from NCAA Division I-AA to the FBS. He led Connecticut to a pair of BIG EAST Championships in 2007 and 2011 and to its firstever BCS Bowl Appearance following the 2011 season. He took Connecticut to a total of five bowl games.

Immediately prior to becoming UConn’s head coach in 1998, Edsall served as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 1998. Edsall began his coaching career at his alma mater, Syracuse, from 1980-1990. Edsall moved on to Boston College where he coached defensive backs under Tom Coughlin from 1991-93 before following Coughlin to the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, staying there through the 1997 season.

UConn football on home Saturday dates gets going early with “Breakfast At The Rent” with Ray Dunaway and Scott Gray beginning at 6:00 a.m. The UConn Tailgate Show will air from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with Kevin Nathan and Bob Joyce. The pregame show begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the game and then postgame “Husky Talk” with Kevin Nathan.

Other affiliates for UConn football on the UConn IMG Sports Network include WILI 1400-AM in Willimantic and WAVZ-1300 AM in New Haven.

The UConn vs. Maryland game will also be available on satellite radio on Ch. 132 on Sirius and 191 on XM. Series Notes UConn vs. Maryland History Saturday’s game marks just the second meeting in football between the two schools as Maryland defeated UConn by a 34-0 score in College Park to open the 1942 UConn season. The game was played in the original Byrd Stadium.

Neither the Yankee Conference nor the Atlantic Coast Conference had been formed at the time of the game. Among the UConn players were Walt Dropo, who later went on to baseball fame as the 1950 American League Rookie of the Year for the Boston Red Sox. He also played basketball and baseball at UConn.

Team Captains The following four Huskies were named team captains for the season in the week prior to the season opener vs. UMass – redshirt senior outside linebacker Jory Johnson (Mobile, Ala.), redshirt senior offensive tackle Adam Masters (Bethesda, Md.), senior wide receiver Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) and redshirt senior cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson (Edinboro, Pa.).

HUSKIES HAVE BEEN BOWL ELIGIBLE The UConn football team has been bowl eligible for four times in the past five years and in six of the past eight. The 2010 UConn football team won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to play in the school’s first-ever BCS game -- the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. UConn made the bowl eligible mark for the sixth time in the past eight seasons -- and the fourth consecutive.

UConn lost to Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and it defeated South Carolina by a 20-7 score in the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl. The Huskies also went to the International Bowl in 2009 and defeated Buffalo. In 2007, UConn was 9-3 in the regular season and went on to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. In 2004, the Huskies went 7-4 in the regular season and won the Motor City Bowl. In 2003, UConn was 9-3, but did not go to a bowl because of its independent status.

UConn In Season Openers With the August 30 win over Massachusetts, UConn is 9-2 in season openers since making the jump to then-Division I-A in 2002. UConn has won nine of its ten season openers at Rentschler Field (2003-Indiana, 2004-Murray State, 2005-Buffalo, 2006-Rhode Island, 2008-Hofstra, 2010-Texas Southern, 2011-Fordham, 2012-UMass) and also downed Duke, 45-14, in Durham, to open the 2007 season and Ohio University, 23-16 in Athens, to open 2009.

UConn’s two FBS era opening day losses were a 24-16 defeat at Boston College on Aug. 31, 2002 in UConn’s first game as an official member of the FBS, and a 30-10 loss to Michigan on Sept. 4, 2010. Overall, UConn is now 52-59-2 in season openers dating back to 1896.

HUSKIES ON WATCH LISTS, PRESEASON HONORS Four members of the University of Connecticut football team were named to seven major award watch lists over the course of the 2012 preseason.

Griffin was placed on both the Mackey Award and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists. The Mackey is awarded to the nation’s top tight end, while the Lombardi honors the nation’s top lineman or linebacker. Griffin was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011 and ranked third on UConn with 33 receptions, three for touchdowns, and 499 yards.

McCombs earned a spot on both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists. The Maxwell Award is given to the country’s top player in college football and the Doak Walker is awarded to the nation’s top running back.

Moore was honored with a spot on both the Lombardi Award and Butkus Award watch lists. The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker and recognizes 51 players on its watch list in the preseason to honor the jersey number of Dick Butkus.

Williams was named to three award watch lists. He landed on the Bednarik and Lombardi Award watch lists as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list. The Bednarik and Nagurski are each awarded to the nation’s best defensive player.

HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLS Connecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year.

The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMS The Oct. 8, 2011 game vs. West Virginia marked the 18th time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn’s only win in those 18 games came on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICS The UConn football program continues to be a leader in the BIG EAST Conference in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes.

UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among league schools.

In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the BIG EAST and within four points of the second place team and last week, the 2011 GSR came out and UConn was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second.

UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent.

The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universities that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate.

UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game.

In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943).

HUSKIES VS. THE BIG EAST UConn owns an all-time mark of 25-30 in BIG EAST Conference games since joining the league for football in 2004. The Huskies posted their best conference record with a 5-2 mark in 2007 and ‘10. UConn had a five-game BIG EAST Conference win streak to end the 2010 season – the longest in school history.

Huskies On The Road Since 2002 The Huskies have put together a 22-32 road record since 2002.

In non-conference road affairs over that same span, Connecticut has posted a mark of 17-11 and has won nine of its last 13 such games.

Huskies Vs. Non-Conference Foes Since 2002 Connecticut now boasts a 43-21 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002.

The Huskies have won 18 of their last 26 regular season nonleague games overall with the only blemishes coming via a onepoint loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11 and North Carolina State in ’12.

UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011) and 1-1 (2012).

HUSKIES and THE NFL As the NFL had its opening weekend, a total of 12 former Huskies are with NFL teams. UConn had 11 former players that were on active NFL rosters in 2009 (a school high) and that number was ten last season. The 2009 NFL Draft made history for the Huskies as four UConn players were selected in the first 63 selections. UConn is the only BIG EAST school to have four players picked that early since the league was reorganized in 2005. UConn had two players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft and four more in ’11 with one in 2012.

He was the 2009 CFL Special Teams Player of the Year. Taylor was part of the Montreal Grey Cup winning team in 2009 and ’10. * Julius Williams, who played at UConn through 2008, is in his second year with the Edmonton Eskimos. * Jordan Younger is in his ninth season -- all with Toronto.

HUSKIES ON THE REBOUND UConn is 31-17 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002.

In the opening game vs. UMass, the Huskies were coming off as they lost the 2011 season finale at Cincinnati.

BALL CONTROL IS THE KEY A telling sign of UConn’s strong performance on both sides of the ball during its tenure as a FBS program has been its ability to both record and prevent long drives.

Since the start of the 2002 season, UConn’s offense has strung together 83 scoring drives of at least 80 yards while the Husky defense has surrendered just 62 such marches.

UConn also holds a 20-8 advantage over its opponents in the number of 90-yard and over drives since becoming a I-A program.

September 15, 2012 • at Maryland HUSKIES DOMINATING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL Over the past 115 games, UConn has outgained its opponent 66 times. This stretch, like many UConn trends, dates back to a 2824 loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 26, 2002.

Offense Notes McCombs Ready For Year Two Redshirt sophomore running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a breakout season last year as he rushed for 1,151 yards and seven TDs on 275 carries. He was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and was a Second Team All-Conference pick. McCombs was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country and trailed the leader by only 0.46 yards.

McCombs rushing yardage was the ninth-highest in UConn single-season history while his carries were fourth. He was just the second UConn freshman (true or redshirt) to rush for 1,000 yards or more in a season.

McCombs rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries vs. UMass with one rushing TD and then had 60 yards on 20 carries with one TD vs. N.C. State. McCombs now has ninth career rushing TDs. He had a 43-yard reception in the fourth quarter vs. the Wolfpack that set up his five-yard TD rush on the next play.

Whitmer Gets The Start At Quarterback UConn redshirt sophomore Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was named the team’s starter by Paul Pasqualoni heading into preseason camp and made his first collegiate start vs. UMass on Aug. 30. Whitmer was 15 of 25 in the air for 219 yards with two interceptions and was 15 for 27 for 204 yards with three interceptions vs. N.C. State.

Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semester and participated in spring practice and has three years of eligibility. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-Kansas Junior College Conference first team honors and earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011.

Whitmer was named to The Champaign News-Gazette’s AllState team following his senior year of high school at Downers Grove (Ill.) South. He earned all state and all-area honors.

He was 18 of 27 in the air for 187 yards and two touchdowns in UConn’s Blue-White Spring Football game on April 21, 2012.

Receivers Have New Look The Huskies will get a boost at the wide receiver position with two players who did not play in 2011. Redshirt sophomore Skakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is a transfer from Boston College who sat out in ’11 due to NCAA rules. Phillips expects to play a major role in the UConn receiving rotation this year and had two receptions for 21 yards vs. UMass and had one for nine yards vs. N.C. State. He had one reception for nine yards at BC in his freshman year of 2010. Following his senior year in high school, he played in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Also back for 2012 is senior Michael Smith (Houston, Texas), who missed last year. From 2008-10, Smith had 73 receptions for the Huskies for 922 yards and a pair of TDs. Smith was the leading receiver on the 2010 BIG EAST Champion UConn team which went on to play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Smith

made three receptions for 30 yards vs. UMass and one vs. N.C. State for four years.

UConn’s leading receiver vs. UMass was redshirt sophomore Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Gal.) who had a careerhighs with five receptions for 79 yards and a long of 26 and then backed it up with two catches for 27 yards vs. the Wolfpack on Saturday. Davis had just six receptions in all of 2011 with 73 yards.

The most experienced UConn receiver is senior Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.), who was the fifth-leading receiver for the Huskies in 2011. He made one reception for 16 yards vs.

UMass and had a career-high three receptions vs. N.C. State for 59 yards.

Griffin Tough At Tight End Redshirt senior tight end Ryan Griffin (Londouderry, N.H.) was a second team All-BIG EAST selection last year and is moving up the career record book. Griffin is ranked fifth in UConn history for receptions by a tight end with 89 while No. 1 is former NFL standout Brian Kozlowski (1989-92) with 159. Griffin is fifth in receiving yards by a tight end with 1,054 while Kozlowski also holds that record with 1,788.

Griffin owns two of the top ten receiving seasons by a tight end in school history with 33 in 2011 (8th) and 31 in 2010 (tied for tenth).

DEFENSE NOTES Solid Experience Back As has become a yearly habit, the UConn defense returns a strong returning nucleus this season. UConn returns eight of 11 starters to this year’s unit. Senior defensive end Jesse Joseph (Laval, Que.) leads the way with 32 career starts, while senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) has 29, senior linebacker Sio Moore (Apex, N.C.) has 21 and senior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) has 19.

Gawdy Defensive Numbers To Start The Season The Connecticut defense led UConn to shutout vs. UMass on August 30 and limited the Minutemen to just three first downs, three yards of rushing and 59 total offensive yards. The shutout was the first by UConn since a 38-0 win over Maine on Sept. 8, 2007 and the first over a FCS team since a 38-0 win over Buffalo on Sept. 1, 2005.

The three first downs tied a school record for least allowed in a single game as UConn also gave up three vs. Navy in 2002.

The three yards of rushing was the seventh lowest allowed in school history.

The defense also stepped up on Saturday and limited N.C. State to seven points, 12 first downs and 54 yards of rushing.

The seven points given up by UConn after two games is the fewest since UConn began the 2005 season with shutouts vs.

Buffalo (38-0) and Liberty (Sept. 10).

Trevardo Gains Attention Senior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) has gained preseason notice for 2012 by being named to preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lombardi Award.

Williams earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors last year and had a tremendous second half of 2011. Of his 43 tackles in 2011, 20 of them were made in the final five games and of his 15 tackles for a loss, 10.5 were in the final five. He led the

September 15, 2012 • at Maryland BIG EAST and was ranked second in the country in sacks per game with 1.04 and was second in the BIG EAST and 32nd in the country in tackles for a loss.

Williams had three tackles vs. UMass and with 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. He had five tackles with three for a loss of 11 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of ten vs. N.C. State.

Williams is now tied for third in school history in career sacks with 22.5 while Mark Michaels is the career leader with 27 from 1982-85. The other leaders are: Cody Brown with 24 from 200508 and Uyi Osunde with 22.5 from 1999-2003.

Williams is also now in tenth place in UConn career history in tackles for a loss with 31.5. Osudne is the leader there with 49.

Smallwood Out To Quick Start Redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) lead UConn in tackles this season with 21 and also leads with 5.5 tackles for a loss. He was UConn’s leading tackler vs.

N.C. State as he had a career-high 14 stops with two tackles for a loss. Nine of Smallwood’s 14 tackles came in the first half.

Smallwood was also UConn’s leading tackler in the opener vs. UMass as he had seven tackles with 3.5 for a loss. For his efforts, he was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Smallwood started all 12 games last year for the Huskies and was the second-leading tackler on the team.

Gratz Returns For A Touchdown UConn redshirt senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) returned an interception for 37-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against UMass. UConn returned just one interception for a touchdown last year.

The “pick-six” was the second of Gratz’s career has he had a 46-yarder against Oklahoma in the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Gratz now has six career interceptions

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES Solid Start For Christen Redshirt junior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) connected on all three of his field goals attempts and all four extra points in his first collegiate game as a placekicker. Christen had handled kickoff duties only for the past two years and is replacing UConn’s all-time leading kicker Dave Teggart this year.

Christen connected on field goals of 36, 47 and 19 yards vs.

UMass and hit on two extra points. He connected on his one PAT attempt vs. N.C. State.

Wagner Already In The Books UConn redshirt junior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already established himself as a top performer in the UConn record books.

Wagner has been the Husky punter for the past two seasons and was a Second Team All-Conference pick last year.

He currently is in a statistical tie for first in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 41.1 average (joins Desi Cullen from 2006-09) and is eight in career number of punts (169) and sixth in career yardage (6,950).

September 15, 2012 • at Maryland STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES RENTSCHLER FIELD The Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.

FAN NO. 2,000,000 On Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, UConn welcomed the 2,000,000th fan to Renstchler Field in its history. That lucky fan was Shane Buzzell of Manchester, Conn.. The Huskies have sold out 29 of their first 58 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 95.7-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,220,124 fans, or an average of 38,278 per game.

RENTSCHLER FIELD PROVES FRIENDLY FOR HUSKIES The Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rentschler Field in 2011.

The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. Prior to the Iowa State loss, UConn had won nine consecutive games at Rentschler Field.

UConn stands at 44-16 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 24-7 mark in non-conference games.

Michigan, Tennessee Will Visit Rentschler Field Following UConn’s trip to Ann Arbor on Sept. 4, 2010, the Wolverines will come to Rentschler Field on Sept. 21, 2013 to take on the Huskies.

UConn will also play a home-and-home series with Tennessee beginning in 2015 with the Volunteers coming to Rentschler Field on Sept. 26 with a return trip to Knoxville on Sept. 3, 2016.

Other upcoming non-conference opponents coming to Rentschler Field include North Carolina State (2012), Maryland (2013) and Virginia (2016). UConn has now played host to non-conference opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 10, Big XII and Southeastern Conference at Rentschler Field.

NC State (1-1) 0 3 7 0 - 10 Connecticut (1-1) 0 0 0 7 - 7 EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - North Carolina State University redshirt senior quarterback Mike Glennon threw a 46-yard thirdquarter touchdown to receiver Bryan Underwood and the Wolfpack held on to beat the University of Connecticut 10-7 on Saturday before a crowd of 34,202 at Rentschler Field. UConn and NC State are both 1-1 on the season.

Glennon and UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) each threw for 204 yards. But Whitmer also had three passes intercepted as the Wolfpack forced four Huskies turnovers.

All-America cornerback David Amerson recorded his 14th career interception and knocked away a fourth-down pass on Connecticut’s final drive to secure the win.

Glennon completed 15 of his 30 passes but was sacked six times. NC State had just 258 yards of offense, but held the Huskies to 239.

UConn redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) rushed for 60 yards and caught a 43-yard swing pass that set up his five-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run to pull UConn to within three points with seven minutes left.

Glennon opened the next drive by hitting Tobias Palmer with two quick passes to move into UConn territory. But the Huskies defense stiffened at the 27, and the Wolfpack, heading into a stiff wind, decided to go for it on fourth-and-two. Glennon’s pass to Underwood fell incomplete, giving UConn one more drive with 3:17 remaining.

Whitmer moved the Huskies from their own 27 to the 46 before being sacked by linebacker Brian Slay on third down and having Amerson knock down the fourth-down pass.

A bizarre UConn turnover led to NC State’s touchdown.

Safety Earl Wolff tipped a Whitmer pass into the hands of Huskies redshirt senior tight end John Delahunt (Ottawa, Ont.), who then fumbled the ball back to Wolff. Three plays later, Underwood ran under a Glennon pass, catching it with his fingertips at the 18-yard line and running the rest of the way into the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

Amerson picked off Whitmer’s pass on the next UConn play, but Niklas Sade’s 44-yard field-goal attempt went wide right.

N.C. State’s three halfbacks - Mustafa Green, Tony Creecy and James Washington - combined for just 82 yards.

The first points didn’t come until late in the second quarter, when NC State put together the game’s first sustained drive of 15 plays. But after moving 61 yards, a sack by senior Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) forced the Wolfpack to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Sade with just under three minutes left in the first half.

Connecticut’s best scoring chance before halftime came when Nick Williams’ 30-yard catch set the Huskies up at the N.C. State 37. But after a penalty, Whitmer tripped and fell while dropping back, and an 18-yard catch by Williams set up a fourth-and-2.

UConn went for it rather than try a 47-yard field goal into a stiff wind, and Whitmer was sacked by linebacker Rickey Dowdy.

UConn won the early battle for field possession, but could not capitalize. The Huskies failed to get a first down after starting their first three drives on their own 39, 48 and the NC State 45. The Huskies didn’t have a first down until the end of the quarter when NC State’s T.Y. McGill was called for roughing Whitmer.
