Weist, a 25-year veteran of the coaching profession who most recently served as the wide receivers coach at Cincinnati, is the interim head coach at UConn for the rest of the 2013 season. Weist was elevated to that position on Sept. 30 -- four games into the 2013 season. Weist is in his first season at UConn and continues to serve as offensive coordinator and also has position responsibility with the wide receivers. He has led the Huskies to a 2-5 record, but has won his last two games – marking the first time since the end of 2012 that UConn won two-straight. During his time with the Bearcats, Cincinnati won a total of two BIG EAST Championships. Weist (pronounced WEEST) helped lead the Bearcats to a 10-3 record in 2012 and a 48-34 victory over Duke in the Belk Bowl. Weist served as Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator in the Belk Bowl as the Bearcats gained 554 yards of total offense on 53 plays and did not have a turnover. Cincinnati was 17 of 25 in passing for 332 yards. Weist joined the Bearcats after eight years at Western Kentucky mentoring the receivers. He also served as the team’s assistant head coach (2007-09) and offensive coordinator (2003-06). Weist came to WKU from Indiana, where he served as wide receivers coach from 1997-01. While at IU, he also carried special teams responsibilities with the return units and also served as the Hoosiers’ recruiting coordinator his first two years. Weist was also on the staffs at Tulsa (1996), Southern Illinois (1994-95), Michigan (1990-93) and Alabama (1988-89). A native of Bay City, Mich., Weist was a wide receiver at Alabama from 1985-87, taking part in three postseason bowl games, and earned a letter as a senior. Cochran made his first career start at Rentschler Field on Saturday and was impressive in UConn’s 28-17 win over Rutgers as he was 25 of 33 in the air for 311 yards and two TDs. He has a pair of TD passes to true freshmen on Saturday – an 18-yard to Dhameer Bradley (New Castle, Del.) and a three-yarder to Brian Lemelle (Harrisburg, Pa.). For his efforts, Cochran was named to the weekly American Honor Roll. In his first career win on Nov. 23 vs. Temple, he was eight of 18 in the air for 11 yards and an interception. He had both a passing and rushing touchdown with a 33-yard completion to junior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) on the first possession of the second half and a one-yard TD run with 7:24 left in the game that tied the contest at 21-21. December 7, 2013 • vs. Memphis cluding his career with a win in the Huskies’ first-ever bowl appearance – the 2004 Motor City Bowl. With Cochran taking over as the starter, Boyle will use his starting experience to now be a valuable backup quarterback. He is currently listed at number two on the depth chart. THREE FOR 300 UConn has had three starting quarterbacks this season and all three of them have had a game of 300 or more passing yards. Redshirt junior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) started the first four games of the season and passed for 349 yards vs. Maryland on September 14 – which is the 11th highest in school single-game history. Cochran’s 311 yards vs. Rutgers on Saturday is 31st in school history while Boyle’s 310 is 32nd. Whitmer also passed for 333 yards against Western Michigan in 2012 – which is 19th in school history. UConn has never had a season with three 300-yard QBs and three seasons with two 300-yard QBs – 1990 (Cornelius Benton and Matt DeGennaro), 1991 (Benton and Tom DeSarno) and 1998 (Brian Hoffmann and Shane Stafford). McCOMBS GETS CAREER HIGH VS. BULLS UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a careerhigh 164 yards of rushing on Oct. 12 vs. USF on 20 carries with a long of a 52-yard TD run. The mark topped his previous career-high of 152 yards vs. Syracuse in 2011. McCombs now has 11 100-yard rushing games in his career and one this season. His second 100-yard game came last Saturday with 103 yards on 17 carries vs. SMU. He owns two of the top six single-season rushing marks in school history. McCombs had 135 yards on 10 carries in the first half, which easily topped his season best for a total game – 76 yards on 17 carries vs. Towson in the opener. McCombs was named a preseason candidate list for the 2013 Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top college running back each year by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. December 7, 2013 • vs. Memphis for his career (123 vs. Western Michigan in ’12). Junior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) is now second on the team this season with 32 receptions for 397 yards. He had nine receptions for 117 yards vs. Rutgers on Saturday – both career highs. UConn redshirt junior Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is third with 28 receptions for 406 yards and three TDs this season despite missing three games with a hamstring injury, including Saturday vs. Rutgers. Phillips had ten receptions for 178 yards and one TD vs. Maryland on Sept. 14, which was a career-high in each category. The 178 yards of receiving was the most for a Husky in UConn’s FBS era (since 2002). It marked the first time a Husky receiver had more than 150 yards in one game since Marcus Easley had 157 against West Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009. It was the most receiving yards in a single-game for a Husky since Dak Newton had 222 vs. Villanova on Oct. 5, 1996.

DEFENSE NOTES GAWDY DEFENSIVE NUMBERS IN 2012 The UConn defense established itself as one of the top units in college football last season in 2012. UConn was ninth in total defense (309.92 yards per game), seventh in rushing defense (97.92 yards per game), 15th in tackles for loss (7.33 per game), 18th in sacks (2.75 per game), 36th in pass defense (212.00 yards per game) and 19th in scoring defense (19.83 points per game). UConn led the BIG EAST in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and sacks. UConn gave up just 36 points in the first quarter of games last year (field goal by WMU, TD vs. Buffalo, two FG by Rutgers, two FG by Syracuse. TD by USF, TD by Cincinnati) and gave up only 33 first quarter first downs. The Huskies have now given up just 78 points in the past 17 games in the first quarter, including the six games this season and 35 of those points coming in the last four games. SMALLWOOD A SEMIFINALIST FOR BUTKUS AWARD UConn junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) was named as one of 12 semifinalists for the 2013 Butkus Award, which honors the country’s top linebacker. Five finalists were announced on November 26 and Smallwood was not among them. Smallwood was the only semifinalist from a school in the American. The Huskies also played against Buffalo LB Khalil Mack, another Butkus semifinalist, who was named a finalist. Smallwood has led UConn in tackles in six of the Huskies 11 games with 16 against Towson, 14 against Maryland, 13 vs. Michigan, 12 vs. Buffalo, 10 vs. Louisville. He tied for the team lead with eight on Nov. 23 vs. Temple, earning American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of The Week honors, and also tied for a team-best with nine vs. Rutgers on Saturday. Smallwood provided the winning score for the Huskies vs. Temple when he returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown with 4:20 left in the game. It was the second interception of his career – as he also returned a 28-yarder for a TD vs. Buffalo in 2011. He also had a fumble return for a TD vs. Vanderbilt in ’11. He was second on the team in the USF game with nine and came back to lead the team with 13 against Cincinnati. He is ranked 17th in the country in tackles per game at 10.2 and fourth in The American. Smallwood was named to the American Weekly Honor roll for his performance vs. Michigan. He was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by CBSSports.com for his performance vs. the Wolverines.

6

Smallwood was named to virtually every defensive award preseason Watch List for the 2013 season, including the Butkus. He was also named to the lists for the: Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award -- both are given to the top defensive player in the country. Smallwood was a first team All-BIG EAST selection in 2012 and led the Huskies in tackles with 120 and was second in tackles for a loss with 15. He had four sacks and two forced fumbles. Smallwood was tied for 20th in the country in tackles per game (10.0) and was third in the BIG EAST. TWO INTERCEPTIONS FOR MACK, AMERICAN HONORS UConn senior cornerback Taylor Mack (Powder Springs, Ga.) had two interceptions on Saturday in the win over Rutgers, including one with 1:58 left in the game that sealed the win. It was the first multi-interception game for the Huskies since Jerome Junior had two vs. Buffalo on September 25, 2010. Mack now has three interceptions this season, which ties him with fellow corner Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) for most on the team, and four for his career. Following his big game, Mack earned The American Defensive Player of the week honors, giving UConn back-toback winners in the category after Smallwood last week.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES CHRISTEN FG STREAK BROKEN Redshirt senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) missed a 46yard field goal in the third quarter of the Michigan game, which broke a streak of ten-straight FG attempts dating back to last year. He made two against Buffalo (33 and 37 yards) before having a 48-yarder blocked in the third quarter. On October 12 vs. USF, he had a make (32), a miss (49) and one blocked (47). He made a 26-yarder and misses a 47-yarder vs. Cincinnati on October 19. He made a 40-yarder vs. UCF on October 26 and a 35-yarder vs. Lousville. Overall this season, he is 9-15 in field goals with the 40-yarder vs. UCF being the long. He is a perfect 8-8 from inside the 39-yard line, but 1-6 from 40 and longer. He has connected on three of his last five attempts. He connected on three field goals in the win over Louisville on Nov. 24, 2012, including the winning 30-yarder in the third overtime. His other field goals were 39 yards in the first quarter and a 37-yarder in the first overtime. Dating back to the Syracuse game on October 19, 2012 and including the Towson and Maryland games of this year, he had made ten-straight FG attempts. He missed the ’12 season finale vs. Cincinnati due to injury. WAGNER ALREADY IN THE BOOK UConn redshirt senior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already established himself as a top performer in the UConn record books. Wagner is in his third season as the regular UConn punter and he is now second in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 40.8 average, while the leader is Desi Cullen (2006-09) with 41.1. Wagner is first in career number of punts (303) and first in career yardage (12,377). This season, he has put 17 of his 66 punts inside the 20-yard line and 22 of his punts have been for a fair catch. Wagner was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, given to the top punter in the country. He is also UConn’s nominee for The Burlsworth Trophy, given to the top player in the country that began his career as a walk-on. Wagner was given a scholarship prior to his redshirt sophomore season of 2011.

The Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rentschler Field in 2011 and was 3-3 in ’12. The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. UConn stands at 46-20 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 25-10 mark in non-conference games.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES RENTSCHLER FIELD The Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn is marking the 10th Anniversary of the stadium in 2013 with a number of special events and promotions, including the 2013 game tickets, which features a great moment in Rentschler Field history on each one. The ticket for the USF game featured Scott Lutrus against USF in 2007, UConn’s first win over a ranked opponent. The ticket for the Michigan game featured D.J. Hernandez celebrating a successful two-point conversion in UConn’s doubleovertime win over Pittsburgh in 2006. The ticket for the Maryland game featured Alfred Fincher and UConn’s 22-20 win over Duke in 2004, the second year of stadium play. The ticket for the Towson game featured quarterback Dan Orlovsky and the Opening Day Game, a 34-10 win over Indiana on Aug. 30, 2003. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites. The Huskies have sold out 30 of their first 67 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 95.7-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,566,986 fans, or an average of 38,313 per game. UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rentschler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Buffalo quarterback Joe Licata was 10 for 19 in the air with three TD passes for 177 yards as the Bulls defeated the University of Connecticut football team by a 41-12 score before a crowd of 20,952 at UB Stadium. The win was the first for Buffalo over UConn since 2001 as the Bulls up their record to 2-2 and the Huskies are 0-4. UConn is 0-4 for the first time since 1991. UConn turned the ball over five times while Buffalo scored through the air, on the ground and on defense in building a 28-12 halftime lead. They blocked a field goal and scored 17 points off Connecticut turnovers. Licata passed for a career-high three touchdowns, connecting with different receivers on each score. Licata found tight end Mason Schreck for a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter, later adding a 22-yard touchdown to Alex Neutz and a 36-yard score to Fred Lee. The Bulls were aided by the return of starting running back Branden Oliver, who had 110 total yards including 90 yards rushing and a touchdown. UConn junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) turned the ball over four times, including a second-quarter interception that Najja Johnson returned 33-yards for a Bulls touchdown. UConn redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter as he was two-for-five in the air for 11 yards and an interception. Husky senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) connected on field goals of 33 and 37 yards, but had a 48-yard attempt blocked in the second quarter. Patrick Clarke hit field goals of 49 and 50 yards for Buffalo. UConn junior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was a bright spot for the Huskies, with five catches for 102 yards. The Huskies continue to have trouble on the ground as they entered the game 121st in rushing offense. They finished the game with 27 yards rushing on 39 attempts. The win was Buffalo’s first against a BCS school since Sept. 7, 2002, when they beat Rutgers.

UConn drops to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the American Athletic Conference while USF is 2-4 and 2-0. It was the Bulls second consecutive win without an offensive touchdown after beating Cincinnati last week. Kloss’ 44-yard field goal with just over four minutes left capped a more than seven minute fourth-quarter drive, and was the game winner. He has converted on nine consecutive attempts, including a 47-yarder in the first half. UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career-high 164 yards rushing and a touchdown for Connecticut, which has lost five straight games to open a season for the first time since 1977. The Bulls winning drive went 65 yards in 13 plays. USF just missed out on a touchdown when Steven Bravo-Brown got his hands on a 26-yard pass, but dropped the ball in the end zone. UConn, which was held scoreless in the second half, got the ball back twice more. They drove to midfield with six seconds left, but a Hail Mary on the game’s final play fell incomplete in the end zone. An interception by redshirt junior UConn cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) at the USF 29, set up a 32-yard field goal from redshirt senior Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) that opened the scoring. USF’s defense then got its third touchdown in three weeks. Ryne Giddins knocked the ball away from Boyle, and Lynch picked up the loose ball and rumbled 44-yards to make it 7-3 late in the first quarter. It took the Huskies just four plays to retake the lead as McCombs weaved his way for a 52-yard touchdown run, his longest run of the season and longest since 2011. The junior’s previous rushing high this season had been 76 yards. He had 135 in the first half of this one. Kloss, who hit four field goals last week, capped a six-play second quarter drive to score 10-10. The junior has five field goals of 47 yards or more on the year, a new school record. UConn had a chance to take the lead in the third quarter, but Julius Forte blocked a 47-yard field goal attempt, the second week in a row that USF has blocked a kick.

Defense UT-AT-TT TFL Sk Int Smallwood 4-6-10 Stevenson 5-1-6 1.0 EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The 20th-ranked University of Jones 4-2-6 0.5 Louisville team topped the University of Connecticut football team Ashiru 2-4-6 1.5 by a 31-10 score on Friday night before a crowd of 27,104 at Vann 2-3-5 0.5 Rentschler Field. Louisville improves to 8-1 on the season and Stephen 1-4-5 4-1 in American Atheltic Conference plays while UConn is 0-8 Mack 3-1-4 and 0-4 in the league. 1-3-4 1 Freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) threw three Adams 2-1-3 1.0 1.0 interceptions for Connecticut and was limited to just 113 yards of Joseph passing. Louisville had 369 yards in offense and held the Huskies to 237. Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater came into the game completing almost 74 percent of his passes. He might have been close to that Friday, but was victimized by numerous drops, as his receivers seemed to struggle catching a hard ball with the temperature hovering in the 30s. Bridgewater threw just his third interception of the season in the third quarter when UConn redshirt sophomore Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) stepped in front of a pass. UL cornerback Terell Floyd got that back on the next play, intercepting Boyle’s pass and taking the ball back 17 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. It was the first of two picks for Floyd. Cardinals cornerback Charles Gaines, who had an interception for a touchdown against USF, also scored. He blocked a punt after a muffed snap, scooped it up and ran 7 yards to open the scoring. The Cardinals have outscored opponents 75-6 in the opening 15 minutes of games this season. Gaines added a second-quarter interception. The Huskies lone TD came on a 14-yard pass from reshirt freshman QB Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) to junior wide reciever Kamal Abrams (Dover, Del.) with 35 seconds left in the game. UConn took the game’s opening drive inside the Louisville 10 before a fumble. The Huskies also had a 14-play first-half drive, which ended in a 35-yard field goal with 14:54 left in the first half. But the Cardinals held them to 58 yards rushing. Louisville running back Dominique Brown, who ran for 125 yards on just 18 carries in his first career start two weeks ago, had only 29 yards against UConn. Perry added 27 and Bridgewater had 21.

DALLAS - SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw four touchdown passes to help the Mustangs hold off the University of Connecticut football team 38-21 on Saturday before a crowd of 14,639 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. UConn falls to 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in the American Athletic Conference while SMU is 4-5 and 3-2. Gilbert, the national leader in total offense at 409.4 yards per game before Saturday, passed for 353 yards and ran for 23 against the Huskies. UConn stayed within a touchdown of SMU until 3:50 remained in the game. At that point, SMU’s Chase Hover kicked a 27-yard field goal, set up by Connecticut’s 14-yard punt. Gilbert passed for two touchdowns each to Jeremy Johnson and Keenan Holman. Johnson finished with 12 catches for 71 yards. Holman had 8 for 88 yards, and teammate Der’rikk Thompson caught 5 for 113. For UConn, Cochran passed for two scores and redshirt sophomore Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) ran for a touchdown. Redshirt junior Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Huskies with 103 rushing yards in 17 carries. SMU scored first with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter on Gilbert’s one-yard pass to Holman. He made a leaping catch at the back of the end zone and came down with one foot in bounds. On the previous play, Gilbert had appeared to score on a run from 24 yards out. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs leading 7-0. They extended the lead to 14-0 on Gilbert’s four-yard pass to Johnson. It capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive. The Huskies answered with a 75-yard drive that ended with DeLorenzo’s 2-yard touchdown run. Penalties on SMU for a horse collar tackle and pass interference in the end zone helped UConn move into position to score. In hurry-up mode, Gilbert drove the Mustangs 70 yards in 10 plays and 2:10. A five-yard TD pass to Johnson produced a 21-7 lead 18 seconds before halftime. UConn stopped the Mustangs on their first possession of the second half. Redshirt freshman Cochran then led a 62-yard drive. He threw a one-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to redshirt sophomore tight end Sean McQuillan (Glastonbury, Conn. UConn’s offense wasn’t bothered by the two-TD deficit. The Huskies scored on a 26-yard pass from Cochran to team receiving leader redshirt junior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.)

The Huskies won their first game of the season and now have a 1-9 record and a 1-5 mark in the American Athletic Conference while Temple is 1-10 and 0-7. UConn redshirt feshman quarterback Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) tied the game at 28-28 on a one-yard rush with 6:52 to play and junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) won it when he intercepted Temple quarterback P.J. Walker and returned the ball 59 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 4:20 remaining. The 21-0 deficit for the Huskies marked the largest comeback in the school’s FBS history, which dates back to 2002. The previous mark was 17 when UConn trailed Western Michigan 17-0 in the second quarter and wound up with a 41-27 win on Nov. 1, 2003. Smallwood tied for a team-high with eight tackles. The interception was his first of the season, and the first pick-six of Walker’s career. Walker attempted to tie the game on its final drive but his final heave to the end zone fell incomplete with 38 seconds remaining. Temple hopped out to an early lead and took a 21-0 advantage into the half, but allowed UConn to make it a one score game with two third-quarter touchdowns, on a 33-yard reception by redshirt junior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) from Cochran and a seven-yard by redshirt sophomore running back Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.). The Owls’ defense tried to keep UConn and Cochran from tying the game, but came up short on two key fourth-and-goals. Temple actually stopped UConn on a third-and-goal from the one-yard line but cornerback Anthony Robey was called for pass interference on fourth-and-goal, allowing UConn a fresh set of downs at the goal line. Temple then proceeded to stop three straight rushes at the one-yard line but could not stop Cochran on the Huskies second fourth down from the goal line. Two minutes and 32 seconds later, Walker couldn’t catch Smallwood on his touchdown return.

Conn. - University of Connecticut redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns and the Huskies beat Rutgers 28-17 on Saturday before a crowd of 22,163 at Rentschler Field. The Huskies won for the second time in two weeks and are now 2-9 on the season and 2-5 in the American Athletic Conference. Rutgers falls to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the league. UConn redshirt sophomore running back Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) rushed for two scores for the Huskies, who lost their first nine games this season. DeLorenzo’s second touchdown run, from a yard out, put the Huskies in front 21-17 in the fourth quarter. Cochran then led UConn on a 12-play, 56-yard drive on their next possession, sealing the win with a three-yard touchdown pass to freshman Brian Lemelle (Harrisburg, Pa.) Rutgers senior Chas Dodd, making his first start of the season for the Scarlet Knights threw for 286 yards and a touchdown. Dodd also threw two interceptions to UConn senior cornerback Taylor Mack (Powder Spring, Ga.), including one on the Husky 19-yard line with just two minutes left. Dodd, who got the start over team captain Gary Nova, helped put Rutgers back in front in the third quarter. He found Quron Pratt down the left sideline for an 84-yard completion, the longest play of the season for the Scarlet Knights. That set up a three-yard touchdown run from Justin Goodwin. UConn got a big play on its next possession -- a screen pass from Cochran to junior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) went for 41 yards, setting up DeLorenzo’s touchdown run. Foxx caught nine balls for 117 yards. Rutgers scored first as the Scarlet Knights took the opening drive to the UConn 10-yard line then faked a 27-yard field goal. Holder J.T Tartacoff threw the ball into the back of the end zone where tight end Tyler Croft wrestled it for a touchdown. UConn responded with an eight-play, 79-yard drive. Cochran hit five of six passes, including an 18-yard throw over the middle to freshman wide receiver Dhameer Bradley (New Castle, Del.), the first touchdown catch of Bradley’s college career. Rutgers Quron Pratt was stripped of the ball on the kickoff return, Rutgers’ 17th turnover of the season. UConn scored five plays later on a 12-yard run by DeLorenzo. Cochran, who was 25-33 for the game, had just one incomplete pass in the first quarter, hitting five different receivers.
