The Coaches UCONN HEAD COACH PAUL PASQUALONI UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni is in his third season in charge of the UConn program and the Cheshire, Conn. native was named the 28th head football coach in UConn history on January 14, 2011. Pasqualoni was the final all-time winningest coach in BIG EAST Conference league wins with 67 and overall wins with 115. He was just one of two league coaches in history to win four BIG EAST Championships. His overall college coaching record stands at 151-92-1 (34-17 at WCSU, 107-59-1 at Syracuse and 10-16 at UConn). Pasqualoni has had a highly-successful career on all levels of football -- professional, college and high school. He was the head coach at Western Connecticut from 1982-86 and led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1985. He had an extremely successful tenure as the head coach at Syracuse from 19912004. Pasqualoni led the Orange to 107 wins, four BIG EAST titles and a 6-3 postseason record. Among his bowl appearances at Syracuse were two Fiesta Bowls (1992 and ‘97) and an Orange Bowl (‘98). For the previous five seasons, Pasqualoni has served on NFL staffs -- with Dallas in 2006-07 and ‘10 and with Miami in 2008-09. His first coaching job was an assistant coach at Cheshire HS from 1972-75. He is a 1972 Penn State graduate.

Radio & TV Coverage TELEVISION COVERAGE Saturday’s game will be televised by ABC as one of two split national telecasts along with Texas vs. Kansas State. Sean McDonough is on play-by-play, Chris Spielman is on color and Shannon Spake will be on the sidelines. Bo Garrett is the producer while Mike Schwab directs. RADIO COVERAGE The UConn IMG Sports Network is the home of Husky football on the radio. WTIC Newstalk 1080 in Hartford serves as the flagship station and is the state’s only 50,000 watt signal and can be heard in 23 states and parts of Canada. The 2013-14 year marks the 22nd consecutive season that WTIC is the flagship for UConn sports. The 2013-14 football and men’s and women’s basketball season also marks the second year that the radio rights are held by IMG College, which is UConn’s multi-media rights partner. Veteran UConn announcers Joe D’Ambrosio (play-by-play) and Wayne Norman (color commentary) return to call the action with Kevin Nathan on the sidelines and Anthony “Rex” McCalla on production. THE GAME

UCONN VS. MICHIGAN HISTORY Saturday’s game is the second meeting between the two schools as the Wolverines posted a 30-10 win over the Huskies on Sept. 4, 2010 before a crowd of 113,090 at Ann Arbor, a game that served as the re-dedication of Michigan Stadium. The game was the season-opener for both teams as the Huskies wound up going to make their first-ever BCS appearance at the end of the year in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl vs. Oklahoma. Denard Robinson led the way for the Wolverines in his first career start with 29 carries for 197 yards on the ground and 186 yards of passing on a 19-for-22 day. Jordan Todman had 105 yards of rushing with a TD while quarterback Zach Frazer was 18-of-37 in the air for 205 yards. The Wolverines scored the first 21 points of the game, but the Huskies scored on a 32-yard FG by Dave Teggart and a two-yard TD run by Todman late in the Michigan half to close within 21-10. Michigan scored a FG on its first possession of the second half and the Huskies drove to the Michigan seven-yard line on its first 449.3 possession but lost the ball on a fumble and never threatened again. 195.0

UCONN-MICHIGAN CONNECTIONS UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel is a 1990 Michigan graduate and was a defensive end for the Wolverines during his playing career and also earned letters in track…Manuel also holds a master’s degree in social work and an MBA from Michigan…He also worked at the school as an Associate and Assistant Athletic Director from 1998-2005….UConn Senior Associate Director of Athletics Doug Gnodtke holds both an undergraduate and graduate degree from Michigan and was an assistant to the Athletic Director at the school… UConn Director of Football Alumni and Community Affairs Andy Baylock earned his master’s from Michigan in 1962…There are no Connecticut natives on the Michigan roster and there are no Michigan natives on the Huskies. HUSKIES VS. BIG TEN ALL-TIME Saturday’s game is the fourth time in school history that Connecticut has played against a Big Ten school. At UConn home games, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game. It takes place All-Time: 0-1 between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates...The offerings change each game, but activities typically include inflatable games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs.... The “Husky Walk” is a chance for fans to welcome the UConn team as they get off the team buses and head to the stadium. That takes place approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff between Gates A and B...Once again this season at the end of home games, the UConn team will sing the “UConn Husky” fight song in front of the student section at Rentschler Field.

SQUAD NOTES HUSKIES HAVE BEEN BOWL ELIGIBLE The UConn football team has been bowl eligible four times in the past six years and in six of the past ten. The 2010 UConn football team won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to play in the school’s first-ever BCS game -- the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. UConn lost to Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and it defeated South Carolina by a 20-7 score in the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl. The Huskies also went to the International Bowl in 2009 and defeated Buffalo. In 2007, UConn was 9-3 in the regular season and went on to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. In 2004, the Huskies went 7-4 in the regular season and won the Motor City Bowl. In 2003, UConn was 9-3, but did not go to a bowl because of its independent status. UCONN IN SEASON OPENERS UConn is now 9-3 in season openers with the loss to Towson since making the jump to then-Division I-A in 2002. With the loss to Maryland, UConn has started the season 0-2 for the first time since 2002. UConn has not started a season 0-3 since 2011. UConn has won nine of its 11 season openers at Rentschler Field (2003-Indiana, 2004-Murray State, 2005-Buffalo, 2006-Rhode Island, 2008-Hofstra, 2010Texas Southern, 2011-Fordham, 2012-UMass) and also downed Duke, 45-14, in Durham, to open the 2007 season and Ohio University, 23-16 in Athens, to open 2009. UConn’s three FBS era opening day losses were a 24-16 defeat at Boston College on Aug. 31, 2002 in UConn’s first game as an official member of the FBS, a 30-10 loss to Michigan on Sept. 4, 2010 and the Towson loss. Overall, UConn is 52-60-2 in season openers dating back to 1896. HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLS Connecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008. UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMS Saturday’s game vs. Michigan will mark the 21st time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn has a 2-18 record in those games with the two wins coming vs. No. 19 Louisville on November 24, 2012 by a 23-20 score in triple overtime and on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct. 5, 2002. UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICS The UConn football program continues to be a leader in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among Big East league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the Big East and within four points of the second place team in 2011, was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR

mark released in 2012 was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universities that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943). UConn’s 2013 APR score of 958 was 11 points higher than the national average of public institutions. HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002 Connecticut boasts a 45-24 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 20 of their last 31 regular season nonleague games overall with the only blemishes coming via a onepoint loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11, North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12 and Towson and Maryland in ’13. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-2 (2013). HUSKIES ON THE REBOUND UConn is 34-22 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002. The Huskies lost their 2012 season finale vs. Cincinnati and the record includes games over two seasons with the loss to Towson and also the loss to Maryland.

OFFENSE NOTES McCOMBS A DOAK WALKER CANDIDATE UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named to the preseason candidate list for the 2013 Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top college running back each year by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. He led UConn in rushing in the opening game vs. Towson with 76 yards on 17 carries. McCombs has led UConn in rushing the past two seasons with 1,151 yards in 2011 and was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick. He was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country in ‘11. Last year, he led the Huskies with 860 yards on 243 carries. He is currently the eighth-leading rusher in school history with 2,140 yards while Cornell Brockington is seventh with 2,198 from 2003-05 and Vinny Clements is sixth with 2,327 from 1968-70. McCombs is fourth in career carries at UConn with 554 and has two of the top six single-season marks in rushing carries. McCombs has nine 100-yard rushing games over the past two-plus seasons.

2013 University of Connecticut Football Game Notes

September 21, 2013 • vs. Michigan WHITMER BACK AT QB UConn junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) returns for his second year as the Husky starter. His 2,503 yards of total offense last year with eighth in school single-season history while his 208 completions was seventh. Whitmer’s 2,664 passing yards was fifth. He was 16 of 28 in the air for 206 yards, two TDs and one interception vs. Towson in the opener. Whitmer was 29 of 46 in the air for 349 yards, two INT and a TD vs. Maryland. The 349 yards was a career-high topping the previous mark of 333 he had against Western Michigan last season. Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semester and participated in spring practice. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-Kansas Junior College Conference first team honors and earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011. SHAK SETS RECEIVING YARDAGE MILESTONES UConn edshirt junior Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) leads UConn with 15 receptions for 225 yards and three TDs this season. His is 20th in the country, and fourth in the American, in receptions per game and is seventh in the country, and first in the American, in receiving yards per game. Philips had ten receptions for 178 yards and one TD vs. Maryland on Saturday, which was a career-high in each category. The 178 yards of receiving was the most for a Husky in UConn’s FBS era (since 2002). It marked the first time a Husky receiver had more than 150 yards in one game since Marcus Easley had 157 against West Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009. It was the most receiving yards in a single-game for a Husky since Dak Newton had 222 vs. Villanova on Oct. 5, 1996. Redshirt junior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is the second-leading receiver on the team with 10 receptions for 154 – having five receptions in each of the first two games.

DEFENSE NOTES GAWDY DEFENSIVE NUMBERS IN 2012 The UConn defense established itself as one of the top units in college football last season in 2012. UConn was ninth in total defense (309.92 yards per game), seventh in rushing defense (97.92 yards per game), 15th in tackles for loss (7.33 per game), 18th in sacks (2.75 per game), 36th in pass defense (212.00 yards per game) and 19th in scoring defense (19.83 points per game). UConn leads the BIG EAST in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and sacks. UConn gave up just 36 points in the first quarter of games last year (field goal by WMU, TD vs. Buffalo, two FG by Rutgers, two FG by Syracuse. TD by USF, TD by Cincinnati) and gave up only 33 first quarter first downs. The Huskies have now given up just 43 points in the past 13 games in the first quarter, including the Towson and Maryland games this year. SMALLWOOD NAMED TO WATCH LISTS UConn junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) was named to virtually every defensive award preseason Watch List for the 2013 season. He was named to the lists for the: Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award -- both are given to the top defensive player in the country – and also named to the lists for the Butkus Award that honors the nation’s best linebacker. Smallwood was a first team All-BIG EAST selection in 2012 and led the Huskies in tackles with 120 and was second in tackles for a loss with 15. He had four sacks and two forced fumbles. Smallwood was tied for 20th in the country in tackles per game (10.0) and was third in the BIG EAST. Smallwood has played in all 24 UConn games over the past two seasons and has 214 career tackles with 5.5 sacks and 17.5 TFLs.

CHRISTEN ON FG STREAK Redshirt senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) connected on three field goals in the win over Louisville on Nov. 24, 2012, including the winning 30-yarder in the third overtime. His other field goals were 39 yards in the first quarter and a 37-yarder in the first overtime. Dating back to the Syracuse game on October 19, 2012 and including the Towson and Maryland games, he has made ten-straight FG attempts. He missed the ’12 season finale vs. Cincinnati due to injury.

The ticket for the Towson game featured quarterback Dan Orlovsky and the Opening Day Game, a 34-10 win over Indiana on Aug. 30, 2003. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites. The Huskies have sold out 29 of their first 64 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 96.3-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,464,258 fans, or an average of 38,504 per game.

WAGNER ALREADY IN THE BOOK UConn redshirt senior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already established himself as a top performer in the UConn record books. Wagner is in his third season as the regular UConn punter and was a Second Team All-Big East selection in 2011. He is now second in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 40.8 average, while the leader is Desi Cullen (2006-09) with 41.1. Wagner is second in career number of punts (252) and second in career yardage (10,273).

FRIENDLY RENTSCHLER FIELD The Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rentschler Field in 2011 and was 3-3 in ’12. The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. UConn stands at 45-18 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 25-9 mark in non-conference games.
