UConn plays in the NCAA tournament for the third time in the past four years when it takes part in the Blacksburg Regional as the No. 4 seed. UConn earned its NCAA spot this year by winning the BIG EAST tournament last weekned in Clearwater, Fla. as the No. 8 seed. UConn’s performance in the BIG EAST tournament helped turn around a 2012 season that saw mixed results for the Huskies. The Huskies began the year with an 8-3 record, including wins against NCAA tournament teams Indiana, Troy and Sam Houston St. UConn also started the BIG EAST season out with an 8-4 record, but lost 11 of its last 12 conference games to finish 9-15 before winning the BIG EAST tournament. • UConn is making its third appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last four years and is just one of 38 programs to accomplish that. • UConn is making its 18 appearance in the NCAA tournament all-time and has an overall NCAA record of 29-35. The Huskies played in the College World Series in 1957, ‘59, ‘65, ‘72 and ‘79. • UConn made its first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2011 when it won the Clemson Regional and lost to eventual national champion South Carolina in the Super Regional.

• The Huskies appear in this year’s NCAA tournament through an automatic bid by winning the BIG EAST tournament -- the last-ever championship in About the Huskies... The Huskies won their third- the league in any sport. UConn was the No. 8 seed ever BIG EAST tournament -- joining the 1990 and in the event and defeated teams that it was a com‘94 UConn squads. UConn has posted its ninth bined 1-11 against in the regular season. 30-win season in school history and its fifth consecutive. Senior second baseman LJ Mazzilli has powered the UConn offense with a .364 average, 50 runs and 49 RBI to go with 28 steals on 32 attempts. UConn freshman third baseman Vinny Sienna is second on the team in hitting with a .302 average and 33 RBI. Redshirt-sophomore RHP Carson Cross enters the tournament with an 8-4 record and 2.50 earned run average with 83 strikeouts in 104.1 innings. Postseason Awards.. Prior to the BIG EAST tournament, LJ Mazzilli was named First Team AllConference for the second year in a row and now has been named All-BIG EAST three times in his career. Carson Cross was Second Team All-Conference pick. Follwing the BIG EAST tournament, CF Billy Ferriter was given the Jack Kaiser Award as the tournament’s most oustanding player while P Dave Mahoney, SS Todd Verdi and P Anthony Marzi were named All-Tournament.

Jim Penders, Head Coach

Jim Penders has worked with the University of Connecticut baseball program in 21 of the last 23 years, being associated with the Huskies as a student-athlete, an assistant coach and now head coach. He is in his 10th season at the helm of the program in 2013. Penders, a three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year (2011, 2010, 2006), has now led his squad to 30 or more wins in seven of his ten years at Connecticut, including 2013. He had led UConn to the NCAA Championship in three of the past four seasons, just one of 38 programs in the country to achieve that. Penders skippered the Huskies to the 2013 BIG EAST tournament championship as UConn became the first No. 8 seed to win the event. Penders also became the first person to win the BIG EAST Tournament as both a player (1994) and head coach (2013). In his first nine seasons as head coach for the Huskies, he has had a total of 30 players either drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. In 2010, Penders guided the Huskies to a program-best 48 wins. UConn earned a NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 1994 and hosted the Norwich Regional at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. The 2011 season saw Penders lead the Huskies to 45 wins and a trip to UConn’s first ever NCAA Super Regional, as UConn won the Clemson Regional. In July of 2003, Penders became just the fifth head coach in the program’s history since 1924 joining Sumner Dole (1924-35), J.O. Christian (1936-61), Larry Panciera (1962-79) and Andy Baylock (1980-2003). Penders was an assistant coach for the Huskies for seven years from 1997-2003 as UConn posted winning seasons in each of those campaigns. A standout on the baseball field for Connecticut during his undergraduate career, Penders was a four-year letterwinner as a Husky. He was co-captain of the 1994 UConn squad that won the BIG EAST Conference tournament, and the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Championship in both his junior and senior years. Penders graduated from UConn in 1994 with a degree in political science and added a master’s degree from UConn in 1998 from the School of Education. A native of Vernon, Conn., Penders and his wife, Brooke, reside in Old Wethersfield, Conn., and have three children – a daughter, Tess Avery (10), and sons, James Henry “Hank” (8), and Charles Edward “Charlie” (4).

Road Warriors... Connecticut played each of its first 24 games on the road; the longest such streak since playing 21 in a row away from home in 2005, which was also the last time UConn did not play a home game in the month of March. The Huskies are 18-14 in road games this season and were 7-9 at home. UConn is also 9-3 in netural site games -- including the four wins during the BIG EAST tournament. From the LF Bullpen... Senior RHP Dan Feehan has appeared in 94 career games all out of the bullpen, including two in the BIG EAST tournament where he pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. He passed David Erickson (2005-2009) for most all-time at Rutgers (May 3). Through 128.2 innings of career relief, Feehan is 7-8 with a 3.43 ERA and 97 strikeouts. Since suffering a loss to Boston College (Apr. 2), he has pitched 15.0 innings in 15 appearances, while allowing just three runs and striking out 11. Hit Parade... Mazzilli and Ferriter have traded back-and-forth between second and third for career hits at UConn, but it is likely that Mazzilli will finish second. Mazzilli (293) is currently in second, while Ferriter (284) is third. Mazzilli has 90 this season, while Ferriter has 71. Mike Nemeth (2008-2011) is UConn’s all-time leader at 331. Mazzilli is first in the country among active players in career hits while Ferriter is sixth. Starting Cross... Cross’ first 16 career appearances in 2012 were out of the bullpen,

but each of his last 17 have been starts. When starting games, he is 9-4 with a 1.45 ERA and 98 K’s in 122.1 innings. The Huskies are 12-5 in his starts. Nationally, Cross owns the 25th lowest career ERA among active players with at least 75 innings pitched at 2.17. Cross had a gritty nondecision in UConn’s opening win in the BIG EAST tournament against Louisville when he started and pitched into the 10th inning -- a total of 119 pitches. He gave up seven hits and two runs with no walks and three Ks as the Huskies eventually won in 12 innings by a 3-2 score. Bullpen Bagels... The Husky bullpen has tossed 131 scoreless innings of the 167.2 whole innings pitched -- including nine of the 9.2 innings it pitched in the BIG EAST tournament. As a unit, the bullpen owns a 3.48 ERA, compared to a 4.13 ERA by opposing relievers. Five UConn relievers have pitched at least 15 innings out of the pen and own an ERA below 3.00, led by redshirt-senior RHP Will Jolin at 2.21. In extra-inning games, the bullpen has thrown 27.0 innings, given up 23 hits and allowed five runs for a 1.66 ERA. Senior Swing... From April 6 to May 5, Ferriter hit .402 (33-for-82). Over that stretch, he had 12 multi-hit games in 19 played as well as three three-hit games. Ferriter also doubled nine times and driven in 10 runs. Mazzilli has hit .440 (51-for-116) since dropping to .298 on April 10. In the last 30 games, he has knocked in 24 runs and hit 12 doubles.

On the Bases... Connecticut has remained dedicated to its aggressive game plan as the Huskies have attempted 154 stolen bases to the opponents 109. UConn has totaled 115 steals, a .746 success rate, while the Huskies have thrown out 20 opposing runners on the bases. Mazzilli and Ferriter lead UConn with 28 and 25, respectively. The Huskies 115 steals are good enough for 13th in the country and 15th in steals per game, 3.02.

features 19 players from the “Nutmeg State”. All UConn players from the state of Connecticut are identifiable by a decal on the back of their hats and helmets in the outline of the state. Seven of 10 starters on opening day are from Connecticut, including starting pitcher Anthony Marzi. All Huskies have a green ribbon sticker on their batting helmets to honor the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December.

Honor Roll LF-Eric Yavarone (2/25) UConn’s Man of Steal... Ferriter tied 2B-LJ Mazzilli (3/4) LHP-Anthony Marzi (4/15) the program mark for career steals with the 80th of his career at Central Connecticut (Mar. 13). He took the all-time lead with his 81st coming at Presbyterian (Mar. 16) and added one Penders more to his total in the same game. Milestone Wins Ferriter’s career total now stands at 101. He tied his career-high with three 1st Win - 3/8/04, 8-3 vs. steals at Hartford (Mar. 26).

Lineups... Through 60 games, the Huskies have used 27 different lineups. Connecticut’s two most common lineups feature a catching platoon with sophomore Connor David and freshman Max McDowell. UConn used 32 different lineups in 2012.

Mazzilli Receives Preseason Accolades... Mazzilli was named the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. One of the top hitters in the league in 2012, Mazzilli was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2012. He was also named a Louisville Slugger Preseason First Team All-America pick by Collegiate Baseball News. For the second straight season, Mazzilli was tabbed as an All-America First Team selection by Perfect Game USA. He was also named to the Baseball America Preseason All-America Third Team.

23 Ways to Reach First... All season, UConn has shown great patience at the plate and finding ways to get on. Five regulars in the Husky lineup maintain on-base percentages above .366, including sophomore Jon Testani, who is batting just .206. As a team, the Huskies own a .368 OBP to .339 for their opponents. 2011 Title... Connecticut claimed its first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a series win and doubleheader split with Louisville at J.O. Christian Field. George Springer became UConn’s all-time leader in home runs with the 45th of his career in a 7-5 win in game one of the doubleheader on May 14. Homegrown Huskies, Helmet Decals... An Eye on the Books... Mazzilli and Ferriter sit in the top-20 of 10 major offensive categories in the UConn record book. Mazzilli (293) and Ferriter (282) have both passed George Springer (242) for second and third in career hits. Ferriter (185) also passed Nemeth (172) for second in runs against UMass (Apr. 23). March to Victory... Connecticut posted a record of 12-6 in the month of March, besting last season’s mark of 11-8. The 12 wins are the most for the Huskies in the month since registering a 13-7 record in 2008.

Seven in a Row... The Huskies’ seven-game win streak ended with a 6-4 walk-off loss to SHSU on March 9. UConn shutout the Bearkats in the first game of the day, 8-0, behind 7.1scoreless innings from Cross. The win matched Connecticut’s longest winning streak from 2012. Testani went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs in the win. Nine Isn’t Enough... UConn defeated Texas Tech, 1-0, in 11 innings on February 24. It was the second extrainning win of the season and sixth in a row. In the top of the 11th, redshirt-senior center fielder Billy Ferriter lifted a fly ball to left and scored sophomore right fielder Jon Testani from third on a sacrifice-fly for the go-ahead run. Redshirt-sophomore right-hander Jordan Tabakman came on in relief and nailed down his first career save. Let’s Play 15!... Freshman Bryan Daniello made his collegiate debut as a pinch-runner against Indiana (Feb. 16) and soon advanced to third on one wild pitch and then scored the go-ahead run on another. Senior righty Dan Feehan, who came on in the 14th with two on and one out, finished the game to earn the win, 4-3, in 15 innings. It was the longest game for Connecticut since a 2-2, 16-inning tie against Holy Cross on March 22, 2011. Junior shortstop Tom Verdi stole a career-high three bases and scored a pair of runs. BIG EAST Draft Picks... Since Penders took over as head coach in 2004, UConn has had 30 players selected in the MLB Draft; the fourth most amongst BIG EAST teams. In that time frame, Notre Dame leads the league with 35. Springer became the highest drafted player out of the league with the 11th overall pick in 2011. Mike Olt was one of 17 players from BIG EAST teams to play in the MLB in 2012.

Connecticut Baseball 2013 Game Notes UConn Athletic Communications 300-Win Milestone... Jim Penders picked up his 300th career win in an 11-6 decision over Hartford (3/27) at J.O. Christian Field. He passed Larry Panciera (297) for second most wins all-time following a three-game sweep at WVU. Penders’ all-time record is 326-214-4, all at Connecticut. He won his first game on March 8, 2004 against Butler. Current assistant coach Josh MacDonald was the winning pitcher. Penders trails his predecessor Andy Baylock (556) for most wins in the UConn dugout. Two-Time Captain... At the end of fall ball fifth-year senior Billy Ferriter was selected as UConn’s captain for the second straight season. MLB Draft... LJ Mazzilli, Scott Oberg and David Fischer were chosen in the 2012 MLB Draft. Mazzilli went in the ninth round to the Minnesota Twins, while Oberg was also taken on day two of the draft by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th. He played for the Grand Junction Rockies in rookie ball, while Fischer, an 18th round pick of the Washington Nationals, played short-season Single-A with the Auburn Doubledays.

Phone: 860-486-3531 Feeling the Heat... UConn combined to go 6-14 in its four Southern trips plus a threegame series at South Florida and the BIG EAST Tournament in 2012. This year, Connecticut went 6-3 in three consecutive trips to Florida. In the Polls... Connecticut received votes in the NCBWA Top-30 three times over a four-week period this season. Prior to the week of March 4, the Huskies last received votes in the 2012 USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Preseason Poll. UConn was last ranked at the conclusion of 2011 in all four polls, ranking as high as No. 11 in Baseball America. In the latest college baseball polls since the BIG EAST Tournament, UConn received votes in both the USA Today/ ESPN poll and the National College Baseball Writers Association poll.

All-UConn Coaching Staff... The current Husky coaching staff, comprised of all UConn alums, will man the dugout together for the second straight season. Penders (‘94) captained the Huskies to a NCAA Tournament appearance and BIG EAST Tournament Championship in 1994, while assistant coach and teammate Chris Podeszwa (‘93) played on two NCAA Tournament teams in 1990 and 1993. Josh MacDonald (‘06) pitched for UConn for four seasons and was the winning pitcher in Penders’ first win as head coach in 2004. Jeff Hourigan (‘05) transferred to Storrs from Clemson and pitched and played first base in his two seasons with the Huskies. Stadium Enhancement... In January 2012, the Division of Athletics announced that funds for stadium enhancement/construction have been established for baseball, soccer and softball. Plans for a major upgrade to J.O. Christian Field were revealed at the 2012 Baseball Preseason Dinner. Big League Transaction... On January 24, former UConn shortstop Nick Ahmed was involved in a trade from the Atlanta Braves to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two-time MLB All-Star Justin Upton. Ahmed was drafted in the second round by the Braves in 2011 and was a Carolina League (AAdv.) All-Star in 2012. He was also named the organization’s top defensive infielder by Baseball America.

Courant.com Jim Penders May Donate Part Of Liver To Help Ex-Teammate By DOM AMORE, damore@courant.com The Hartford Courant 8:20 PM EDT, May 28, 2013 STORRS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Nearly every day, before the UConn baseball team practices, coach Jim Penders can be seen running through the back roads surrounding the campus.

It's a feeling one of Penders' closest friends, Mike Galati, has not had in a long while. "I told Jim, it's like I'm walking uphill into a 30 mile an hour wind," Galati says. Penders and Galati were UConn teammates, catcher and pitcher, in 1994, the last time the Huskies won the Big East championship. As Penders enjoys the 2013 championship, at the apex of a college coach's career, he is readying himself to help Galati live a long, healthy life. Penders missed practice Tuesday, as his team prepared for the NCAA Tournament, which begins at Virginia Tech on Friday. He was in Yale-New Haven with Galati, where continued tests were run to see if Penders is a match to donate part of his liver. They hope to find out sometime next week if it's a go, but as of Tuesday it looked good. "Just the fact that someone is willing to donate is humbling," Galati says, "but Jim is excited about it. He was happy, excited when he found out he could be a match. It tells you all you need to know about what kind of person Jim is, what kind of family he comes from." Galati, 37, who was an All-State player at Southington High, has primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a disease that causes inflammation of the bile ducts inside and outside the liver. He began having problems with his liver, he said, when he was a freshman in high school, but overcame it to pitch. After turning 30, PSC was diagnosed. It's a slow moving disease, Galati says, but it has progressed to the point where doctors have told him he was unlikely to get a cadaver's liver in time; he needed to find a live donor to survive. Penders helped put the word out through UConn's website during this past season, and former teammates from the Cape Cod League did the same. Soon there was a sizable pool of willing candidates.

Penders and his wife, Brooke, the parents of three young children, both filled out questionaires to begin the process of determining if they were viable matches. "When your wife fills out the questionnaire before you do," Penders said, "and when she finds out she's not a match, tells them to keep her name on the list in case she's a match for someone else, you know you picked right." Jim, however, eventually learned that he could be a match, and as his team flew to Clearwater, Fla., on May 21 for the Big East tournament, he stayed back a day to begin blood tests, CT scans and MRIs. "I never miss a practice," Penders said, "but when one of your teammates needs you, you better be there for him. I preach that to my players all the time, so I better live up to it myself." If Penders is a match, he will have 40 percent of his liver removed, but his liver will regenerate. He will be in intensive care for a couple of days, and in the hospital four to seven days. The recovery process is three to four months. "This is all about Mike," Penders said, "for him to go on and live a long, healthy life. It's no sacrifice on my part. My motivation is, I believe one of my teammates would do it for me." Teammate are teammates, though. When they walked out of the meeting with surgeons on Tuesday, Penders turned to Galati and joked, "I wouldn't be doing this if you didn't win us a championship." The biggest obstacle is the anatomy of the liver. Galati, 6 feet 4, and Penders, 6-1, are similar in size, and the size and shapes of their liver seem to match up. "And Jim is in great shape, healthy as an ox, eats right," Galati said. Galati was a "freshman pheenom" for UConn, Penders recalls. He threw a great, sinking fastball for the Huskies and, during the 1994 Big East tournament in Bristol, he took the ball on short rest and shut out Seton Hall, a team that had hit him hard during the season, to get UConn to the final. This Sunday, Galati watched as his former batterymate became the first to win a Big East baseball title as a player and a coach. "I was excited," Galati said. "It brought me back to that feeling we had 19 years ago, like we were on top of the world. We were the last team to get in, and we had nothing to lose. Jim was a leader, a leader by example. He was always calm, in control. You knew then he had what it takes to be a great coach. You see coaches leave schools for more money, leave at midnight without saying goodbye to their players, schools leaving conferences for a money grab. Jim is what's right with college athletics, all about his program and his players, and loyal to his school." The Huskies practiced without their head coach, at J.O. Christian Field on Tuesday. They will fly together Wednesday to Blacksburg, Va., where they will play Virginia Tech on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Galati, who works as a medical devices sales rep for Johnson & Johnson, is rooting for Penders and the Huskies to go on to the College World Series later this month, even though that could delay the liver transplant process. Once the surgeries and recoveries are done, Galati and Penders want to develop programs to raise awareness of organ donor programs. Maybe, soon, they will be able to go out for a run. "I want to be able to go for a run and not feel winded, and feel that runner's high and say to myself, 'This is what normal feels like.'"
