THE GAME UCONN VS. TEMPLE HISTORY Saturday’s game will be the 14th time Temple and UConn have met. The series began in 1963 and currently has Temple holding a 9-4 all-time edge over the Huskies, but Connecticut has won three of the most five recent meetings with wins at Rentschler Field over the Owls in 2004 and 2007 and an overtime win at Lincoln Financial Field in 2008. Temple defeated Connecticut by a 30-16 score at Lincoln Financial Field on Sept. 18, 2010 and topped UConn by a 1714 overtime score at Rentschler Field on October 13, 2012. In that last meeting, the Huskies scored 14 points in the first quarter on a pair of touchdowns passes by Chandler Whitmer, but was shutout the rest of the way. Montel Harris scored on a 24-yard TD run in the second quarter to make it 14-7 UConn at the half and Temple tied the game with 19 seconds left to go in regulation on a 14-yard TD pass from Chris Coyer to Jalen Fitzpatrick. Brandon McManus hit a 29-yard FG in the first overtime for the Temple win. Whitmer passed for 293 yards in the game while Max DeLorenzo had 91 rushing yards on 23 carries. Shakim Philips had seven receptions for 100 yards. Harris rushed for 142 yards for Temple. In 2011, Jordan Todman rushed for 195 yards for UConn and Dave Teggart had three field goals in the Husky loss. Temple led 7-6 at the half and a 59-yard TD run by Todman made it 13-7 early in the third quarter. The score was 16-14 UConn after three quarters, but the Owls scored all 16 fourth quarter points for the win – including a 24-yard fumble recovery for a TD by Adrian Robinson with 8:28 to play to give Temple the lead for good. The 2008 game was played in hurricane conditions as the Huskies prevailed in OT by a 12-9 score. UConn trailed 6-0 at halftime, but Tony Ciaravino had a pair of fourth quarter FGs to move the game into overtime. After Temple kicked another FG, Donald Brown had three-straight rushes and scored on a seven-yarder to win the game. Brown had 214 yards of rushing on the day. UConn’s schedule is the toughest in the American. Purdue is ranked No. 1 this week, followed by Tennessee, Utah, Georgia and Mississippi State. UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICS The UConn football program continues to be a leader in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among Big East league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the Big East and within four points of the second place team in 2011, was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark released in 2012 was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universities that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943). UConn’s 2013 APR score of 958 was 11 points higher than the national average of public institutions. HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002 Connecticut boasts a 45-26 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 20 of their last 32 regular season nonleague games overall with the only blemishes coming via a onepoint loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11, North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12 and Towson, Maryland, Michigan and Buffalo in ’13. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013). HUSKIES ON THE REBOUND UConn is 34-28 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002. The Huskies lost their 2012 season finale vs. Cincinnati and the record includes games over two seasons with the nine losses this season.

OFFENSE NOTES COCHRAN GETS FIRST CAREER START University of Connecticut redshirt freshman Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) made his first career start on Saturday against SMU and was 25 of 42 in the air for 227 yards and two TDs and interceptions. Cochran had played in four games this season in a reserve role before making the start and had thrown for 183 yards (17 for 28) with two touchdowns and an interception over those four games. Cochran made his collegiate debut against Buffalo (Sept. 28) when he threw two completions for 11 yards and also had two completions for 11 yards vs. Cincinnati (Oct. 19). He had seven completions for 95 yards and his first career TD vs. UCF on Oct. 26 and then had six completions for 66 yards and a TD vs. Louisville on November 8. Cochran played his final two years of high school football at Masuk High School and was Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut for two seasons. He was named to the Connecticut High School Coaches’ Association All-Star Football Team and the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-Connecticut Team after his senior year. He graduated from Masuk with the Connecticut high school career records for passing yards and completions. Masuk won the Connecticut Class L title in 2010 and he started his scholastic career at New London HS and led the team to the state class SS title in 2008. Cochran was named to the 2012 BIG EAST All-Academic team. He enrolled at UConn for the spring 2012 semester and participated in spring practice. He redshirted in 2012 and passed for 46 yards on four completions in ‘12 Blue-White Spring Game. BOYLE AT BACKUP UConn freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) made his first career start and got his first career playing time on Oct. 12 against USF. Boyle was 15 of 43 in the air for 149 yards without a touchdown or an interception. He also ran the ball nine times for 12 yards. Against Cincinnati, he was 22 of 39 for 310 yards and three interceptions. The 310 yards tied as the 30th highest mark in UConn single-game history. He was seven of 21 for 47 yards and two interceptions vs. UCF and was 14-for-29 for 113 yards vs. Louisville. Boyle became the first true freshman to start a game for UConn at quarterback since Shelton native Dan Orlovsky did on October 6, 2001 – a 19-0 win over Eastern Michigan. Orlovsky started 43 consecutive games over three-plus seasons, concluding his career with a win in the Huskies’ first-ever bowl appearance – the 2004 Motor City Bowl. With Cochran taking over as the starter, Boyle will use his starting experience to now be a valuable backup quarterback. He is currently listed at number two on the depth chart. McCOMBS GETS CAREER HIGH VS. BULLS UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career-high 164 yards of rushing on Oct. 12 vs. USF on 20 carries with a long of a 52-yard TD run. His second 100-yard game came last Saturday with 103 yards on 17 carries vs. SMU. He owns two of the top six single-season rushing marks in school history. DEFENSE NOTES GAWDY DEFENSIVE NUMBERS IN 2012 The UConn defense established itself as one of the top units in college football last season in 2012. UConn was ninth in total defense (309.92 yards per game), seventh in rushing defense (97.92 yards per game), 15th in tackles for loss (7.33 per game), 18th in sacks (2.75 per game), 36th in pass defense (212.00 yards per game) and 19th in scoring defense (19.83 points per game). UConn led the BIG EAST in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and sacks. UConn gave up just 36 points in the first quarter of games last year (field goal by WMU, TD vs. Buffalo, two FG by Rutgers, two FG by Syracuse. TD by USF, TD by Cincinnati) and gave up only 33 first quarter first downs. The Huskies have now given up just 78 points in the past 17 games in the first quarter, including the six games this season and 35 of those points coming in the last four games.

November 23, 2013 • at Temple SMALLWOOD A SEMIFINALIST FOR BUTKUS AWARD UConn junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) was named as one of 12 semifinalists for the 2013 Butkus Award, which honors the country’s top linebacker. Finalists are announced on November 26 and the winner on December 10. Smallwood was the only semifinalist from a school in the American. The Huskies also played against Buffalo LB Khalikl Mack, another Butkus semifinalist. Smallwood has led UConn in tackles in six of the Huskies nine games with 16 against Towson, 14 against Maryland, 13 vs. Michigan, 12 vs. Buffalo and 10 vs. Louisville. He was second on the team in the USF game with nine and came back to lead the team with 13 against Cincinnati. He is ranked 12th in the country in tackles per game at 10.4 and is third in The American. Smallwood was named to the American Weekly Honor roll for his performance vs. Michigan. He was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by CBSSports.com for his performance vs. the Wolverines. Smallwood was named to virtually every defensive award preseason Watch List for the 2013 season, including the Butkus. He was also named to the lists for the: Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award -- both are given to the top defensive player in the country. Smallwood was a first team All-BIG EAST selection in 2012 and led the Huskies in tackles with 120 and was second in tackles for a loss with 15. He had four sacks and two forced fumbles. Smallwood was tied for 20th in the country in tackles per game (10.0) and was third in the BIG EAST. Entering 2013, Smallwood had played in all 24 UConn games over the past two seasons and with 214 career tackles with 5.5 sacks and 17.5 TFLs.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES CHRISTEN FG STREAK BROKEN Redshirt senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) missed a 46yard field goal in the third quarter of the Michigan game, which broke a streak of ten-straight FG attempts dating back to last year. He made two against Buffalo (33 and 37 yards) before having a 48-yarder blocked in the third quarter. On October 12 vs. USF, he had a make (32), a miss (49) and one blocked (47). He made a 26-yarder and misses a 47-yarder vs. Cincinnati on October 19. He made a 40-yarder vs. UCF on October 26 and a 35-yarder vs. Lousville Overall this season, he is 9-15 in field goals with the 40-yarder vs. UCF being the long. He is a perfect 8-8 from inside the 39-yard line, but 1-6 from 40 and longer. He has connected on three of his last five attempts. He connected on three field goals in the win over Louisville on Nov. 24, 2012, including the winning 30-yarder in the third overtime. His other field goals were 39 yards in the first quarter and a 37-yarder in the first overtime. Dating back to the Syracuse game on October 19, 2012 and including the Towson and Maryland games of this year, he had made ten-straight FG attempts. He missed the ’12 season finale vs. Cincinnati due to injury. WAGNER ALREADY IN THE BOOK UConn redshirt senior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already established himself as a top performer in the UConn record books. Wagner is in his third season as the regular UConn punter and he is now second in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 40.9 average, while the leader is Desi Cullen

6

(2006-09) with 41.1. Wagner is first in career number of punts (293) and first in career yardage (11,986). This season, he has put 13 of his 56 punts inside the 20-yard line and 19 of his punts have been for a fair catch. Wagner was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, given to the top punter in the country. He is also UConn’s nominee for The Burlsworth Trophy, given to the top player in the country that began his career as a walk-on. Wagner was given a scholarship prior to his redshirt sophomore season of 2011. He owns three of the top ten single-season punting averages in school history, including his 41.3 average from his sophomore year of 2010, which is third. Consecutive Years of Returning a Kickoff/Punt for a Touchdown (Entering 2013) 1.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES RENTSCHLER FIELD The Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn is marking the 10th Anniversary of the stadium in 2013 with a number of special events and promotions, including the 2013 game tickets, which features a great moment in Rentschler Field history on each one. The ticket for the USF game featured Scott Lutrus against USF in 2007, UConn’s first win over a ranked opponent. The ticket for the Michigan game featured D.J. Hernandez celebrating a successful two-point conversion in UConn’s doubleovertime win over Pittsburgh in 2006. The ticket for the Maryland game featured Alfred Fincher and UConn’s 22-20 win over Duke in 2004, the second year of stadium play. The ticket for the Towson game featured quarterback Dan Orlovsky and the Opening Day Game, a 34-10 win over Indiana on Aug. 30, 2003. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites. The Huskies have sold out 30 of their first 66 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 96.4-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,544,823 fans, or an average of 38,557 per game. UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rentschler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

Licata found tight end Mason Schreck for a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter, later adding a 22-yard touchdown to Alex Neutz and a 36-yard score to Fred Lee. The Bulls were aided by the return of starting running back Branden Oliver, who had 110 total yards including 90 yards rushing and a touchdown. UConn junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) turned the ball over four times, including a second-quarter interception that Najja Johnson returned 33-yards for a Bulls touchdown. UConn redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter as he was two-for-five in the air for 11 yards and an interception. Husky senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) connected on field goals of 33 and 37 yards, but had a 48-yard attempt blocked in the second quarter. Patrick Clarke hit field goals of 49 and 50 yards for Buffalo. UConn junior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was a bright spot for the Huskies, with five catches for 102 yards. The Huskies continue to have trouble on the ground as they entered the game 121st in rushing offense. They finished the game with 27 yards rushing on 39 attempts. The win was Buffalo’s first against a BCS school since Sept. 7, 2002, when they beat Rutgers.

UConn drops to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the American Athletic Conference while USF is 2-4 and 2-0. It was the Bulls second consecutive win without an offensive touchdown after beating Cincinnati last week. Kloss’ 44-yard field goal with just over four minutes left capped a more than seven minute fourth-quarter drive, and was the game winner. He has converted on nine consecutive attempts, including a 47-yarder in the first half. UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career-high 164 yards rushing and a touchdown for Connecticut, which has lost five straight games to open a season for the first time since 1977. The Bulls winning drive went 65 yards in 13 plays. USF just missed out on a touchdown when Steven Bravo-Brown got his hands on a 26-yard pass, but dropped the ball in the end zone. UConn, which was held scoreless in the second half, got the ball back twice more. They drove to midfield with six seconds left, but a Hail Mary on the game’s final play fell incomplete in the end zone. An interception by redshirt junior UConn cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) at the USF 29, set up a 32-yard field goal from redshirt senior Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) that opened the scoring. USF’s defense then got its third touchdown in three weeks. Ryne Giddins knocked the ball away from Boyle, and Lynch picked up the loose ball and rumbled 44-yards to make it 7-3 late in the first quarter. It took the Huskies just four plays to retake the lead as McCombs weaved his way for a 52-yard touchdown run, his longest run of the season and longest since 2011. The junior’s previous rushing high this season had been 76 yards. He had 135 in the first half of this one. Kloss, who hit four field goals last week, capped a six-play second quarter drive to score 10-10. The junior has five field goals of 47 yards or more on the year, a new school record. UConn had a chance to take the lead in the third quarter, but Julius Forte blocked a 47-yard field goal attempt, the second week in a row that USF has blocked a kick.

Defense UT-AT-TT TFL Sk Int Smallwood 4-6-10 Stevenson 5-1-6 1.0 EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The 20th-ranked University of Jones 4-2-6 0.5 Louisville team topped the University of Connecticut football team Ashiru 2-4-6 1.5 by a 31-10 score on Friday night before a crowd of 27,104 at Vann 2-3-5 0.5 Rentschler Field. Louisville improves to 8-1 on the season and Stephen 1-4-5 4-1 in American Atheltic Conference plays while UConn is 0-8 Mack 3-1-4 and 0-4 in the league. 1-3-4 1 Freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) threw three Adams 2-1-3 1.0 1.0 interceptions for Connecticut and was limited to just 113 yards of Joseph passing. Louisville had 369 yards in offense and held the Huskies to 237. Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater came into the game completing almost 74 percent of his passes. He might have been close to that Friday, but was victimized by numerous drops, as his receivers seemed to struggle catching a hard ball with the temperature hovering in the 30s. Bridgewater threw just his third interception of the season in the third quarter when UConn redshirt sophomore Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) stepped in front of a pass. UL cornerback Terell Floyd got that back on the next play, intercepting Boyle’s pass and taking the ball back 17 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. It was the first of two picks for Floyd. Cardinals cornerback Charles Gaines, who had an interception for a touchdown against USF, also scored. He blocked a punt after a muffed snap, scooped it up and ran 7 yards to open the scoring. The Cardinals have outscored opponents 75-6 in the opening 15 minutes of games this season. Gaines added a second-quarter interception. The Huskies lone TD came on a 14-yard pass from reshirt freshman QB Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) to junior wide reciever Kamal Abrams (Dover, Del.) with 35 seconds left in the game. UConn took the game’s opening drive inside the Louisville 10 before a fumble. The Huskies also had a 14-play first-half drive, which ended in a 35-yard field goal with 14:54 left in the first half. But the Cardinals held them to 58 yards rushing. Louisville running back Dominique Brown, who ran for 125 yards on just 18 carries in his first career start two weeks ago, had only 29 yards against UConn. Perry added 27 and Bridgewater had 21.

DALLAS - SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw four touchdown passes to help the Mustangs hold off the University of Connecticut football team 38-21 on Saturday before a crowd of 14,639 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. UConn falls to 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in the American Athletic Conference while SMU is 4-5 and 3-2. Gilbert, the national leader in total offense at 409.4 yards per game before Saturday, passed for 353 yards and ran for 23 against the Huskies. UConn stayed within a touchdown of SMU until 3:50 remained in the game. At that point, SMU’s Chase Hover kicked a 27-yard field goal, set up by Connecticut’s 14-yard punt. Gilbert passed for two touchdowns each to Jeremy Johnson and Keenan Holman. Johnson finished with 12 catches for 71 yards. Holman had 8 for 88 yards, and teammate Der’rikk Thompson caught 5 for 113. For UConn, Cochran passed for two scores and redshirt sophomore Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) ran for a touchdown. Redshirt junior Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Huskies with 103 rushing yards in 17 carries. SMU scored first with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter on Gilbert’s one-yard pass to Holman. He made a leaping catch at the back of the end zone and came down with one foot in bounds. On the previous play, Gilbert had appeared to score on a run from 24 yards out. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs leading 7-0. They extended the lead to 14-0 on Gilbert’s four-yard pass to Johnson. It capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive. The Huskies answered with a 75-yard drive that ended with DeLorenzo’s 2-yard touchdown run. Penalties on SMU for a horse collar tackle and pass interference in the end zone helped UConn move into position to score. In hurry-up mode, Gilbert drove the Mustangs 70 yards in 10 plays and 2:10. A five-yard TD pass to Johnson produced a 21-7 lead 18 seconds before halftime. UConn stopped the Mustangs on their first possession of the second half. Redshirt freshman Cochran then led a 62-yard drive. He threw a one-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to redshirt sophomore tight end Sean McQuillan (Glastonbury, Conn. UConn’s offense wasn’t bothered by the two-TD deficit. The Huskies scored on a 26-yard pass from Cochran to team receiving leader redshirt junior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.)
