THE COACHES CONNECTICUT HEAD COACH RANDY EDSALL UConn Randy Edsall became the all-time winningest coach in UConn football history on Saturday with his 67th career win at the school. He tackled the challenge of bringing a former NCAA Division I-AA team up to par with the BIG EAST in an 11-year span head on, guiding the Huskies to the 2007 BIG EAST Championship, three bowl games in the past five years with two bowl wins. He is in his 12th season at UConn and has led the Huskies to wins in 56 of the UConn’s last 92 games dating back to the ninth game of the 2002 season. He has a 58-42 (.580) mark through the first 100 games of UConn’s tenure at the FBS level. His overall career mark at UConn stands at 67-66. Saturday’s game against Temple will be the 134th of his UConn career -the most of any coach in UConn history. He topped the mark of 121 set by J.O. Christian (1934-49). His 67 career coaching wins at UConn is the most of any coach in school history as he passed J.O. Christian who had 66. Immediately prior to becoming UConn’s head coach in 1998, Edsall served as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 1998 under George O’Leary. Edsall began his coaching career at his alma mater, Syracuse, from 1980-1990, working under Frank Maloney and Dick MacPherson in a variety of capacities. Edsall moved on to Boston College where he coached defensive backs under Tom Coughlin from 1991-93 before following Coughlin to the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, staying on the First Coast through the 1997 season. Edsall is a native of Glen Rock, Pa., and graduated from Susquehannock High School. He was inducted into the York Area Sports Hall of Fame. TEMPLE COACH AL GOLDEN Al Golden is in his fifth season in charge of the Temple program and last season led Temple to its fist winning season since 1990 and its first bowl appearance in 30 years. He led Temple to a 9-4 record in 2009 a share of the Mid-American Conference East Division Championship with a 7-1 mark. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year. The Owls played UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl in Washington, D.C., as Temple fell 30-21. Golden has had assistant coaching stops at Virginia, Penn State and Boston College.
