THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team opens play in the 2014 NCAA Championship East Regional with a Thursday, March 20 (6:55 P.M., TBS), contest against Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Saint Joseph’s at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y. The Huskies are the No. 7 seed in the regional, while Saint Joseph’s is a No. 10 seed. The winner will advance to the third round to meet the winner of No. 2 seed Villanova against No. 15 seed Milwaukee. UConn stands 26-8 on the season. The Huskies finished 12-6 in the American Athletic Conference, tied with SMU and Memphis for third place, and won two games in The American Championship before bowing to Louisville in the championship game. Saint Joseph’s, out of Philadelphia, is 24-9. The Hawks tied for third place in the A-10 at 11-5, then swept Dayton, St. Bonaventure, and VCU to win the tournament championship. HUSKY NOTABLES Kevin Ollie is in his second season as the 18th head coach of the UConn men’s basketball program after posting a 20-10 record last year. He is the only head coach in UConn history to post a 20-victory season in his first year and reach 45 wins in his first two years.
UConn is making its 32nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 1950-51 season. The Huskies have an all-time record of 52-29 (.642) in NCAA games with national championships in 1999, 2004, and 2011.
