The UConn men’s basketball team plays its final road game of the regular season, challenging nationally-ranked (#24) SMU at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. The Huskies (20-9 overall, 10-6 American Athletic Conference) are coming off a 75-68 home loss to Houston at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday. UConn is led by four double-figure scorers --- forward Shonn Miller (13.0), guard Rodney Purvis (12.9), guard Sterling Gibbs (11.8) and swingman Daniel Hamilton (11.6). Hamilton is also the Huskies’ leading in rebounding (8.9) and assists (5.0), while junior Amida Brimah is tops in blocked shots (2.5). SMU (24-4, 12-4), which has won three straight and four of its last five, is coming off a 74-53 home triumph over Tulane. The Mustangs also have four players averaging double figures -- guard Nic Moore (16.1), forward Ben Moore (12.0), forward Jordan Tolbert (11.6) and guard Shake Milton (10.9). Tolbert is the team’s top rebounder (8.4) and Nic Moore leads in assists (5.2). UConn defeated SMU, 68-62, on Feb. 18 in Hartford. HUSKY BITES Kevin Ollie is in his fourth season as the 18th head coach of the UConn men’s basketball
program, with a career record of 92-42. He reached 50 victories in just two years and he is already sixth on the all-time list of UConn coaching victories. His .687 winning percentage ranks fourth among UConn coaches who have coached more than 20 games and he and Jim Calhoun are the only UConn coaches to win the NCAA championship.
UConn is playing its 289th game on ESPN/ESPN2 since 1986-87, the start of the Jim
Calhoun era. The Huskies have a record of 172-116 (.597) in those games. Today’s game is the last of 12 regular-season UConn games on ESPN/ESPN2 this season. The Huskies are 5-6 on ESPN/ESPN2 so far this season.
