SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Trailing by as many as 10 points against 10th-seeded St. Joseph’s, UConn fought back in the second half to finally take a lead, 54-53, with 9:14 remaining and set up a nip-and-tuck battle the rest of the way in Thursday’s second-round game which ended with an 89-81 overtime victory for UConn. The Huskies trailed by 66-62 with 4:01 to go and were still behind, 70-67, with 0:42 left when Shabazz Napier drove the lane and missed, but freshman Amida Brimah grabbed the offensive rebound, scored on the putback and added a free throw to tie the game. UConn had a chance to win at the buzzer, as Napier got open on a give and go play, but his 21-footer rimmed out. Two free throws by Brimah put the Huskies ahead for good in the overtime, 75-73. A brilliant 15-of-16 performance from the foul line in the overtime clinched the win for UConn. The Huskies were 18-of-20 overall from the stripe. Napier led four double-figure scorers with 24 points, along with 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, while DeAndre Daniels had 18, Ryan Boatright had 17 and Niels Giffey added 10.

The two teams have met four previous times on a neutral court, all at Madison Square Garden during Big East Tournaments, and they have split the four games. UConn won the last two, on 3/7/02 and 3/12/04. This season, Villanova has crashed the Top 25 and remained there, currently ranked No. 6 in AP and No. 7 in USA Today, with a 29-4 record. The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight games and use a balanced scoring attack that features three 14-point scorers -- James Bell, Darrun Hilliard, and JayVaughn Pinkston, outside sharpshooter Ryan Arcidiacono, and big man Daniel Ochefu. SHUFFLE OFF TO BUFFALO: This is UConn’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in the city of Buffalo. In 1954, the Huskies lost a first-round game to Navy, 85-80, in the city. UConn’s next NCAA trip to Buffalo and the then-named HSBC Arena in 2004 was much more productive, as the Huskies defeated Vermont, 70-53, and DePaul, 72-55, in the first two rounds on their way to the 2004 National Championship. UConn has played four games at the University of Buffalo, winning three of them, including the latest visit on Dec. 4, 2008. The Huskies have also played one game at Niagara, losing, 112-79, on Dec. 16, 1959, and one at Canisius, losing an 84-56 decision on Dec. 21, 1963. A DOZEN WITH 27: The 2013-14 season is the 12th season in UConn history in which the Huskies have won 27 or more games.
2014 UConn NCAA Championship Media Notes March 20 and 22, 2014, Second and Third Rounds First Niagara Center, Buffalo, N.Y.
The last time it happened was during the 2010-11 championship season, when the Huskies recorded a 32-9 mark. UConn has extended its streak of seasons with 20 wins or more to four straight, six of the last seven years, and 15 of the last 17 seasons. It is the 13th season in which UConn won at least 25 games, the previous 12 under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun. Overall, UConn has produced 30 seasons of 20 wins or more, 20 under Calhoun and two under current coach Kevin Ollie. UConn also extended its streak of winning seasons to 27 in a row. VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Using the AP Top 25 as the standard, Villanova will be the sixth nationally-ranked team that UConn has faced in its last eight games. The Huskies are 3-2 vs. the previous five. Overall this season, the Huskies are 6-4 vs. ranked opponents, this season after defeating (#15/13) Florida on December 2, (#17/17) Memphis on Jan. 16, (#20/22) Memphis again on Feb. 15, (#11/12) Cincinnati on March 1, (#19/19) Memphis for a third time on March 13 and (#13/12) Cincinnati on March 14, while bowing to (#18/14) Louisville on Jan. 18, (#7/7) Cincinnati on Feb. 6, (#11/9) Louisville on March 8, and (#5/5) Louisville on March 15. (Indiana was #22 on the USA Today poll, but unranked by AP when it lost to UConn on November 22). UConn is 132-166 all-time against ranked opponents, dating back to the 1950-51 season. Since 1989-90, UConn is 123-96 (.562) against ranked opponents and since the first NCAA championship season of 1998-99, the Huskies are 90-61 (.596) against ranked opponents. In the last 10 years, plus this year, UConn is 61-44 (.581) against ranked opponents. TOP 25: UConn is back in the top 25 rankings in both the AP and USA Today Top 25 for the week of March 17. The Huskies are No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 18 in the USA Today poll. Starting with the preseason poll, the Huskies spent nine consecutive weeks ranked in the polls and have been in the AP Top 25 in 15 of the season’s 20 weeks. Six of UConn’s 2013-14 opponents also appeared in the AP Top 25 or ‘Others receiving votes.’ The longest consecutive streak for UConn to be ranked in the Top 25 is 77 weeks, a span from Nov. 1997-Jan. 2001.

PERCENTAGE LEADER: With 47 wins in his first 65 games as head coach, UConn coach Kevin Ollie’s .723 winning percentage is the highest of any UConn coach who coached more than 20 games. Ollie is the only UConn coach to win 20 games in his first season and 47 games in his first two years. 20 OFF THE BENCH: With 20 points against UCF on January 11, freshman Amida Brimah became the first UConn player under Coach Kevin Ollie to come off the bench and score 20 points. The last UConn player to accomplish that feat was Ryan Boatright, who came off the bench to score 23 against Arkansas on December 3, 2011, under former Coach Jim Calhoun. Boatright was the 14th player to come off the bench in Calhoun’s 26 seasons at UConn to reach the 20-point mark in a game. The other players in this group were Rashad Anderson (11 times), Brian Fair (9 times) , Ben Gordon (5 times), Ray Allen (4 times), Johnnie Selvie (4 times), Phil Gamble (3 times), Doug Wiggins (3 times), Kemba Walker (2 times), Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (2 times), John Gwynn (2 times), Tony Robertson (1 time), Charlie Villanueva (1 time) and Rashamel Jones (1 time). RECORD WATCH: Through 35 games, the Huskies are making a run at a few UConn season records. The record for highest 3-point shooting percentage is 40.8 percent in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 39.0 percent. The UConn record for highest foul shooting percentage is 78.2 percent in 1980-81, which was also No. 1 in the
country. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 76.4 percent from the foul line. The highest per game average of three-point attempts stands at 17.3 in 2010-11. UConn’s average so far this season is 18.5. The highest per game average of three-pointers made is 7.4 in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are averaging 7.2 three-pointers per game. GRAND MASTERS: With his first point against Memphis on Feb. 15, in the 79th game of his college career, junior Ryan Boatright became the 48th member of UConn’s 1,000point club. Boatright joins senior Shabazz Napier as 1,000-point scorers on the same team. The last time the Huskies had more than one 1,000-point scorer on the same team was in 2008-09, when that UConn team had four -- Jeff Adrien, A.J. Price, Jerome Dyson, and Hasheem Thabeet. CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn sophomore Phillip Nolan owns the longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 44 consecutive games. Senior Shabazz Napier has the current record for consecutive starts with 36. MR. CLUTCH ... AGAIN: Senior Shabazz Napier added another chapter to a career filled with clutch performances with a buzzerbeating 15-foot jumper that lifted UConn over #15/13 Florida, 65-64, before a sellout crowd (10,167) at Gampel Pavilion on Dec. 2. With Florida leading, 64-63, and the clock winding down, Napier, who had 26 points (5 three-pointers), 4 rebounds, and 3 steals in the game, took an off-balance shot that missed, but teammate DeAndre Daniels tipped the rebound back to Napier, who caught and shot the ball in one motion, just beating the final horn. NEW HUSKIES: Two outstanding young players, Sam Cassell, Jr., and Daniel Hamilton, have signed agreements to attend UConn beginning with the 2014-15 academic year. Cassell, a 6-4, 195-pound guard out of Baltimore, is the son of 15-year NBA player Sam Cassell, who is currently an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards. The elder Cassell was teammates with UConn head coach Kevin Ollie on the 2002-03 Milwaukee Bucks. Hamilton, a 6-7 guard/forward from Los Angeles, also has family ties to the NBA with older brother Jordan currently playing for the Denver Nuggets. Cassell is attending Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. Hamilton, ranked among the nation’s top 25 players, is a senior at St. John Bosco High in Los Angeles.

Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a Communications degree. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not

“Kevin Ollie, he was a game-changer for us. He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. And we all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. And then everybody who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.” ~ KEVIN DURANT

give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and roster cuts. Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery
