Tip-Off in San Juan on Nov. 20-23. The Huskies open the tournament against the College of Charleston on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 12:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be televised on ESPNU.

THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team opens the 2014-15 season against Bryant University at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by SNY. UConn, out of the American Athletic Conference, begins the season nationally-ranked (AP-#17/USA Today-#15) after coming off a 32-8 season and the program’s fourth NCAA Championship. It was UConn’s ninth 30-win season in the last 25 years and its 30th season of 20 wins or more. The Huskies are led by co-captains, senior guard Ryan Boatright and sophomore center Amida Brimah.

Bryant, out of Smithfield, R.I., and the Northeast Conference, is coming off an 18-14 season, 10-6 in the league. The Bulldogs are led by senior guards Dyami Starks and Joe O’Shea and junior guard Shane McLaughlin.

SEASON OPENERS: UConn is 82-29 (.739) in 111 season openers, dating back to a 1712 victory over Windham High in the 1900-01 season. The Huskies have won 57 of their last 69 openers (.826). They are 2-0 in season openers under Kevin Ollie with wins over Michigan State (2012) and Maryland (2013).

UConn’s last defeat in a season opener occurred on Nov. 11, 1999, a 70-68 loss to Iowa in the Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic at Madison Square Garden. Since then, UConn has won 14 consecutive season openers.

UCONN IN GAMPEL OPENERS: UConn is starting its 26th season at Gampel Pavilion on the Storrs campus and has never lost its Gampel Pavilion opener. Since the building opened in January, 1990, the Huskies have won 25 consecutive Gampel Pavilion season debuts.

Last year, UConn defeated the University of Detroit, 101-55, in its Gampel Pavilion opener as part of the 2K Sports Classic.

UCONN OVERALL IN GAMPEL: UConn has an overall record of 156-25 (.862) at Gampel Pavilion since the building opened in 1990. The Huskies are 77-4 (.951) against non-league competition and was 76-19 (.800) against Big East opponents and is 3-2 against American Athletic Conference opponents in Gampel.

The four non-conference losses came against Detroit Mercy in the 2001 NIT, Jackson St. in the 1993 NIT, Florida St. in the 1992-93 season, and North Carolina St. in the 1990-91 season.

Since the loss to Detroit Mercy, the Huskies have won 43 straight non-conference games in Gampel. UConn is 31-8 in Gampel over the last five seasons. In 2013-14, the Huskies went 7-2 at Gampel.

GETTING STARTED: UConn finished its two-game exhibition season on Nov. 9 with a 68-59 victory over Division II Assumption College at the XL Center in Hartford. Redshirt sophomore Sam Cassell Jr. came off the bench to lead the UConn win with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Senior Ryan Boatright added 17 points, while freshman Daniel Hamilton filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocked shots.

That win followed a hard-fought 70-62 victory over Division II Southern Connecticut State University at Gampel Pavillion on Nov. 4. Southern, ranked No. 2 in the Division II preseason polls, was tied with the Huskies with 11:00 remaining, but a 16-6 UConn run gave the Huskies the lead for good.

Boatright led the winners with 19 points, while Cassell added 17 and sophomore Amida Brimah contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and added 3 blocked shots.

UConn is 49-6 in exhibition games over the last 28 years and has won 42 exhibition games in a row since losing to Marathon Oil on Nov. 21, 1993, at Gampel Pavilion.

ANOTHER 30-, 20-WIN SEASON: Last season’s 32-8 record marked the ninth 30win season in UConn history, all within the last 25 years. It also extended UConn’s streak of seasons of 20 wins or more to four straight, six of the last seven years, and 15 of the last 17 seasons. Overall, UConn has produced 30 seasons of 20 wins or more, 20 under former coach Jim Calhoun and two under current coach Kevin Ollie. UConn also extended its streak of winning seasons to 27 in a row. UConn last had a sub-.500 season (9-19) in 1986-87, Calhoun’s first season as head coach. Calhoun then guided the Huskies to 25 consecutive winning seasons and Kevin Ollie now has two.

PRESEASON TOP 25: UConn is ranked among the Top 25 in both the Associated Press and the ESPN-USA Today preseason polls. The Huskies are No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 15 in the ESPN-USA Today poll. It is the fourth consecutive poll to include the Huskies, counting the last three weeks of polls last season. UConn was among the AP Top 25 in 15 of the 20 weekly polls last year. This is also the fourth consecutive season that UConn has been ranked in the AP Preseason Top 25, the sixth time in the last seven years, the 11th time in the last 12 years, and the 20th time in the last 24 years. The longest consecutive streak for UConn to be ranked in the Top 25 is 77 straight weeks, a span from November, 1997-January, 2001. Five of UConn’s 2014-15

UCONN HUSKIES IN THE NBA As of the start of the 2014-15 NBA season, nine former UConn players were on NBA rosters, with a few others possibly waiting in the wings.

The nine former Huskies are on eight different NBA rosters, and total a combined 60 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn nine are led by Caron Butler (Pistons), in his 13th NBA season. The eight other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Ben Gordon (Magic), in his 11th year, Charlie Villanueva (Mavericks), in his 10th year, Rudy Gay (Kings), in his 9th season, A.J. Price (Pacers), in his 6th year, Kemba Walker (Bobcats), in his 4th NBA season, Jeremy Lamb (Thunder) and Andre Drummond (Pistons), each in his 3rd year, and Shabazz Napier (Heat) in his rookie season.

Former Huskies Ray Allen, Emeka Okafor, and Jeff Adrien are free agents who have been mentioned as possible early- or mid-season signees by NBA teams.

A Look At Bryant UConn and Bryant have met only once before in the regular season, an 88-58 UConn win on Nov. 29, 2008, at the XL Center in Hartford, Bryant’s first season as a Division I program.

The Bulldogs are coming off an 18-14 season, but lost seven games by 5 points or less.

They return three starters from that team, including the team’s top scorer, senior guard Dyami Starks (18.9), the Bulldogs’ No. 1 threepoint threat, along with senior guard Joe O’Shea, and junior guard Shane McLaughlin. That trio figures to return to the starting lineup, likely joined by 6-6 sophomore Dan Garvin and 6-8 freshman Angus Riley. Junior Curtis Oakley and sophomore Ellis Williams are returning players who should have expanded roles as forwards this season.

Among newcomers, BU transfer junior guard Zach Chionuma and freshman guard Hunter Ware should make immediate scoring contributions.

Kevin OLLIE It took Kevin Ollie just 70 games as a collegiate head basketball coach to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA championship.

In just his second season as the head basketball coach at the University of Connecticut and only his fourth year in coaching since retiring from the NBA, Ollie firmly established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA title, defeating Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

With a sparkling 52-18 coaching record, Ollie’s .743 winning percentage is the highest of any coach in UConn history who coached more than 20 games. The 32-victory season is the ninth 30-win season for the Huskies.

Ollie, 41, accepted a huge responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.

With only two seasons of coaching experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportunity to lead the storied UConn program.

Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, Ollie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

The Huskies also posted a 10-8 mark in the difficult Big East Conference. At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach

Ollie raised eyebrows with the season’s very first game, upsetting 14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also included victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syracuse, and five wins in overtime, a school record.

Less than a dozen games into his first season as head coach, Ollie was awarded a fiveyear contract. Following his second season in 2013-14, he spurned interest from several NBA teams to sign another new contract with UConn that runs through May, 2019.

“It’s a humbling experience to be around the UConn fans and the UConn family and to know that I am their basketball coach for the foreseeable future,” Ollie said. “I’m very proud of that. UConn is a place that I love and, as I’ve told everyone throughout the season and through all the recent speculation, this is where my heart is. This is where I want to be.”

UConn President Susan Herbst voiced the support Ollie has earned from the university community.

“Kevin has done a remarkable job as our head coach over the past two years and also during his time as a UConn student-athlete and assistant coach,” she said. “He is a person of utmost character and leadership and embodies everything we stand for here at the University of Connecticut.”

Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Calhoun, Chuck Daly, Don Nelson, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard.

“He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.”

The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie.

“This is my dream job. I was made for this job,” Ollie said on the day he was hired.

“UConn is a special place and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but right here.”

Ollie made that same decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles.

Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total

But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ollie had been brought to Cleveland to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional and Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin

Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches.

It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach.

“Kevin Ollie was a game-changer for us,” Durant, the 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Player, said when asked about the Thunder’s philosophy. “He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. We all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. Everybody who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.”

Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. This past season, Ollie clearly enhanced his reputation as a teacher, molding point guard Shabazz Napier into a consensus first team All-American and the leader of the NCAA national champions.

“Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be all about. When you say that about somebody, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy.

Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.”

Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).

He was able to practice with the Huskies, and he did so until undergoing left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in mid-December. He was able to participate in team activities and sit on the bench during home games. Resumed on-court activities in the spring of 2014. He enters the 2014-15 season with three years of eligibility remaining. Summer, 2013: Invited to tryouts for USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team.

As a Freshman at N.C. State in 2012-13: Appeared in 35 games as a freshman for the Wolfpack, starting 23 and averaged 25.5 minutes, 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds per game, shooting 44.2 percent overall and 38.5 percent from three-point range.
