The UConn men’s basketball team (8-3), which has won three straight and four of its last five games, continues its non-conference schedule with its first “true” road game of the season, meeting the University of Texas (8-3) at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. The game is scheduled to tip off at 9 p.m. (EST) and will be televised by ESPN2. The Huskies are coming off a 99-52 victory over Central Connecticut last Wednesday at Gampel Pavilion. UConn is led in scoring by junior guard Rodney Purvis (15.2), while sophomore Daniel Hamilton (13.0), and grad students Shonn Miller (13.0) and Sterling Gibbs (11.5) also average in double figures. Hamilton tops the Huskies in rebounding (8.7) and also leads in assists (5.9). Texas, which has won six in a row, is coming off a 75-73 road victory at Stanford. Junior guard Isaiah Taylor is the leading scorer (14.7) for the Longhorns and also tops the team in assists (5.1), while senior center Cameron Ridley is the leading rebounder (10.0). HUSKY BITES Kevin Ollie is in his fourth season as the 18th head coach of the UConn men’s basketball
program, with a career record of 80-36. He reached 50 victories in just two years and he is already sixth on the all-time list of UConn coaching victories. His .690 winning percentage ranks fourth among UConn coaches who have coached more than 20 games and he and Jim Calhoun are the only UConn coaches to win the NCAA championship.
UConn is playing its 281st game on ESPN/ESPN2 since 1986-87, the start of the Jim
Calhoun era. The Huskies have a record of 167-113 (.596) in those games. Today’s game is the fourth of 13 regular-season UConn games on ESPN/ESPN2 this season. The Huskies are 0-3 on ESPN/ESPN2 so far this season.
