 UP NEXT: After a nine-day break for exams, UConn

will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 14, meeting Coppin St. at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The game will begin at 4 p.m. and be televised by SNY.

THE GAME: The UConn men’s basketball team continues its non-conference schedule by entertaining in-state rival Yale at Gampel Pavilion. It will be the 67th meeting between the schools in a series that dates back to 1914-15.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised by SNY. UConn (3-2) is coming off a 55-54 heartbreaking loss to No. 7 Texas on Sunday. The Huskies are led by senior Ryan Boatright, who is averaging 20.8 points, 6.2 rebounds. and 4.0 assists per game. Freshman Daniel Hamilton is also in double figures at 13.2 points per game, while sophomore Kentan Facey is the top rebounder at 7.2 per game.

Yale (7-2) is coming off a 67-60 win at Bryant on Wednesday and has won seven of its last eight. Javier Duran is the Elis’ top scorer at 14.1 ppg.

IN-STATE STREAK: UConn has won 68 consecutive games against in-state opponents in the last 28 seasons. The last time an opponent from Connecticut defeated the Huskies was the University of Hartford, 4948, on Dec. 29, 1986, at the Hartford Civic Center in Jim Calhoun’s first season at UConn. Since that game, the breakdown against in-state opponents is as follows: vs. Central Connecticut 9-0; vs. Fairfield 17-0; vs. Hartford 13-0; vs. Quinnipiac 10-0; vs. Sacred Heart 5-0; vs. Southern Connecticut 1-0; vs.

Yale 13-0. Current UConn coach Kevin Ollie is 2-0 against in-state opponents, with wins over Quinnipiac on Nov. 18, 2012, and Yale on Nov. 11, 2013.

OVERALL IN GAMPEL: UConn has an overall record of 157-26 (.858) at Gampel Pavilion since the building opened in 1990. The Huskies are 78-5 (.940) against non-league competition, was 76-19 (.800) against Big East opponents and are 3-2 against American Athletic Conference opponents in Gampel.

The five non-conference losses came against Detriot Mercy in the 2001 NIT, Jackson St. in the 1993 NIT, Florida St. in the 1992-93 season, North Carolina St. in the 1990-91 season, and Texas on Nov. 30, 2014. The 5554 loss to Texas broke a streak of 44 straight non-conference wins in Gampel. UConn is 32-9 in Gampel over the last five seasons, plus this year (1-1). In 2013-14, the Huskies went 7-2 at Gampel.

TEXAS THRILLER: UConn went down to the wire with No. 7 Texas before bowing, 55-54, on a three-pointer from the corner by Texas’ Jonathan Holmes with 2.2 seconds remaining on Nov. 30 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies trailed for much of the game, but a stirring run led by senior Ryan Boatright turned a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead wth 6:00 to go. But Texas clawed back and chopped UConn’s lead to 54-52 and called time with possession with 0:04.4 left. The inbounds pass found Holmes, who hit the shot to give the Longhorns the victory. Boatright scored a game-high 24 points and added 7 rebounds, while freshman Daniel Hamilton was also in double figures with 13.

PUERTO RICO TIP-OFF: UConn returned from San Juan with a second-place finish in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, posting wins over College of Charleston and Dayton before bowing to West Virginia in Sunday’s championship game.

It was the 10th straight season in a November tournament for UConn, in which the Huskies have a combined 27-5 (.844) record. UConn has five tournament championships and four runner-up positions in those tournaments. The five titles came in the

2005 Maui Invitational, the 2006 Hispanic College Fund Classic, the 2008 Paradise Jam, the 2010 Maui Invitational, and last year in the 2013 2K Sports Classic.

UConn senior Ryan Boatright was named to the Tip-Off All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in the three games.

UConn rebounded from a sub-par shooting performance in the first half to shoot 63.2 percent in the second half on its way to a 6557 win over a stubborn College of Charleston team in the first round. Charleston closed to within four points twice in the second half, but UConn’s Ryan Boatright (19 points), Daniel Hamilton (15) and Amida Brimah (14) kept the Huskies in front.

In the semifinals, UConn and Dayton battled through seven ties and eight lead changes before the Huskies took charge defensively in the second half for the 7564 victory. Boatright had 20 points, Rodney Purvis had 19 and Hamilton scored 14 to lead the Huskies, while Brimah’s five blocked shots were key.

In the championship game, West Virginia harassed UConn into 19 turnovers as the Huskies suffered their first loss of the season, 78-68. The Huskies outrebounded the Mountaineers and closed to within six twice in the second half, but could get no closer.

Boatright led the way with 17 points, while Hamilton added 15 points and 9 rebounds.

TOURNAMENT FUTURE: UConn will be in good company as it continues its pattern of participation in outstanding November tournaments. In November, 2015, the Huskies will be playing for the second time in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. UConn, which finished third in the first-ever Battle 4 Atlantis in 2011, will be joined in 2015 by Syracuse, Michigan, Texas, Gonzaga, Texas A&M, Washington, and Charlotte. In November, 2016, UConn will make its fourth trip to the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The Huskies played in the 2000 Maui Invitational, finishing fifth, then won the event in both 2005 and 2010. In 2016, the Huskies will be part of a field that includes Georgetown, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and the host team, Chaminade.

GOOD START: UConn won its 15th straight season opener and extended its perfect record to 26-0 in Gampel Pavilion openers with a 66-53 victory over Bryant on Nov. 14. Senior Ryan Boatright led a secondhalf comeback that saw the Huskies rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half for the win. Boatright scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, handed out 5 assists, and had 4 steals in an outstanding all-around performance. Sophomore center Amida Brimah added 12 points and

AAC HONORS: UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 24, following his performance in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, in which he averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in three games. It is the first Player of the Week honor for Boatright, who was named to the league’s weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 17, and again on Dec. 1. The AAC Preseason Player of the Year, Boatright curretly leads the conferece in scoring at 20.8 points per game.

UConn freshman Daniel Hamilton was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Nov. 24 after he averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 59.3 percent overall and 66.7 percent from three-point range in the three games in Puerto Rico.

AMONG THE AAC LEADERS: Through games of Dec. 3, UConn senior Ryan Boatright is the leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference at 20.8 points per game, while freshman Daniel Hamilton is 11th at 13.2 ppg. Sophomore Kentan Facey is fourth in rebounding at 7.2 per game, while Hamilton is also ninth in that category at 6.6 per game. Facey is also fifth in offensive rebounds (3.0). Sophomore Amida Brimah leads the league in blocked shots at 3.2 per game. Boatright ranks fourth in the league in assists (4.0), eighth in free throw percentage (.825), second in defensive rebounds (5.8), seventh in steals (1.6) and second in minutes played (36.4). Hamilton is first in 3-point shooting percentage (.500), first in defensive rebounds (6.2), sixth in 3-pointers made (2.0), and fifth in minutes played (33.8).

TOP 25: UConn is ranked No. 23 in the ESPN-USA Today Top 25 of Dec. 1 and is among ‘Others receiving votes’ in the AP Top 25 of Dec. 1. UCONN HUSKIES IN THE NBA As of the start of the 2014-15 NBA season, nine former UConn players were on NBA rosters, with a few others possibly waiting in the wings.

The nine former Huskies are on eight different NBA rosters, and total a combined 60 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn nine are led by Caron Butler (Pistons), in his 13th NBA season. The eight other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Ben Gordon (Magic), in his 11th year, Charlie Villanueva (Mavericks), in his 10th year, Rudy Gay (Kings), in his 9th season, A.J. THE AAC PRESEASON LISTS: UConn was picked to finish No. 1 in the conference, UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was named the Preseason Player of the Year and freshman guard/forward Daniel Hamilton was selected the Preseason Rookie of the Year by a vote of the league’s coaches. Boatright was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Conference First Team, while sophomore center Amida Brimah was voted to the AllConference Second Team. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or players.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: UConn has produced two of the last four winners of the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award in Kemba Walker in 2011 and Shabazz Napier in 2014. The Huskies are in the running for another in 2015 as senior Ryan Boatright has been named to the watch list of 35 players for the 2015 Cousy Award. The list will be narrowed to 20 in early February and then the final 5 by early March. The winner will be presented the award on Championship Monday in Indianapolis. Boatright has also been named to the Top 50 watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, presented to the top collegiate player at season’s end. Boatright was also honored as ESPN named him No. 10 on their list of the Top 100 College Players in America.

Four, UConn has now played before three of the four largest crowds in the history of Division I Men’s Basketball. The record of 79,444 fans was set in the 2014 national semifinals at AT&T Stadium in North Texas on April 5, 2014, as the Huskies met Florida.

The second-largest crowd of 79,238 came two days later on April 7 as UConn played Kentucky at AT&T Stadium in the national championship game. The fourth-largest crowd of 75,421 watched UConn play Kentucky on April 2, 2011, in the national semifinals at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

TOPS IN TOURNEY: Speaking of last year’s NCAA Tournament, UConn’s 6-0 record in the 2014 tourney gives the Huskies the best winning percentage in the NCAA tourney since the field expanded to 64 (now 68) in 1985. Since 1985, UConn is 54-15 in the NCAA tourney, a winning percentage of .783 (Without UConn’s 2-1 record in 1996, an appearance voided by the NCAA, the Huskies are 52-14, a winning percentage of .788).

HUSKIES INK TWO: The UConn men’s basketball program has received signed Letters of Intent from two incoming student-athletes, guard Jalen Adams and forward Steve Enoch. Adams is a 6-2 guard from Roxbury, Mass., who currently attends Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., while Enoch is a 6-10 forward from Norwalk, Conn., who currently attends St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Conn.

“We’re very excited to have both these young men coming into our program,” UConn Coach Kevin Ollie said. “Not only are they quality basketball players, but quality people and outstanding studentathletes. I know they will be great additions to our UConn family.”

Adams is a 170-pound combination guard who is consistently rated among the top 25 players in his class nationwide by most recruiting services. He is equally adept at getting to the rim and finishing, shooting the three-pointer, or as a playmaker at the point. He is at Brewster Academy for a prep year after graduating

Enoch, a 220-pound forward, blossomed this summer while playing AAU ball to jump into the top 75 on most recruiting service lists. The fast-improving big man is a solid rebounder, who shows strength around the rim and has developed a consistent short jump shot. He transferred to St. Thomas More this year after three years at Norwalk High School. As a junior, Enoch averaged 14.4 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.4 blocks at Norwalk.

Adams and Enoch will enroll at UConn in the fall of 2015.

A LOOK AT YALE: UConn’s basketball history against Yale dates back 100 years, to the 1914-15 season and includes 66 games, with UConn holding a 44-22 edge. UConn has won the last 13 games and 20 of the last 21 games between the schools, with the lone Yale victory in that stretch coming on Dec. 2, 1986 --- a 77-75 overtime win at Payne Whitney Gym in New Haven. UConn is 3-0 vs. Yale at Gampel Pavilion. The teams had not played in 10 years before last season’s game at the XL Center in Hartford, an 80-62 UConn win.

This season, the Elis have high expectations with all five starters and seven of their top eight scorers returning from last year’s 19-14 team, which reached the title game of the CIT tourney.

Yale (7-2), which has won seven of its last eight games, has been led by senior guard Javier Duren, averaging 14.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, and junior forward Justin Sears, averaging 13.8 ppg and 8.8 rebounds. The remaining probable starters are three-point threat Jack Montague, senior guard Armani Cotton, and senior forward Matt Townsend.

Yale is plus-12.1 in scoring over its opponents and plus-8.2 in rebounding.

Kevin OLLIE It took Kevin Ollie just 70 games as a collegiate head basketball coach to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA championship.

In just his second season as the head basketball coach at the University of Connecticut and only his fourth year in coaching since retiring from the NBA, Ollie firmly established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA title, defeating Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

With a sparkling 52-18 coaching record, Ollie’s .743 winning percentage is the highest of any coach in UConn history who coached more than 20 games. The 32-victory season is the ninth 30-win season for the Huskies.

Ollie, 41, accepted a huge responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.

With only two seasons of coaching experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportunity to lead the storied UConn program.

Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, Ollie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

The Huskies also posted a 10-8 mark in the difficult Big East Conference. At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach

Ollie raised eyebrows with the season’s very first game, upsetting 14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also included victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syracuse, and five wins in overtime, a school record.

Less than a dozen games into his first season as head coach, Ollie was awarded a fiveyear contract. Following his second season in 2013-14, he spurned interest from several NBA teams to sign another new contract with UConn that runs through May, 2019.

“It’s a humbling experience to be around the UConn fans and the UConn family and to know that I am their basketball coach for the foreseeable future,” Ollie said. “I’m very proud of that. UConn is a place that I love and, as I’ve told everyone throughout the season and through all the recent speculation, this is where my heart is. This is where I want to be.”

UConn President Susan Herbst voiced the support Ollie has earned from the university community.

“Kevin has done a remarkable job as our head coach over the past two years and also during his time as a UConn student-athlete and assistant coach,” she said. “He is a person of utmost character and leadership and embodies everything we stand for here at the University of Connecticut.”

Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Calhoun, Chuck Daly, Don Nelson, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard.

“He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.”

The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie.

“This is my dream job. I was made for this job,” Ollie said on the day he was hired.

“UConn is a special place and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but right here.”

Ollie made that same decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles.

Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total

But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ollie had been brought to Cleveland to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional and Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin

Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches.

It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach.

“Kevin Ollie was a game-changer for us,” Durant, the 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Player, said when asked about the Thunder’s philosophy. “He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. We all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. Everybody who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.”

Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. This past season, Ollie clearly enhanced his reputation as a teacher, molding point guard Shabazz Napier into a consensus first team All-American and the leader of the NCAA national champions.

“Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be all about. When you say that about somebody, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy.

Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.”

Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
