The Coaches connecticut head coach paul pasqualoni UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni made his Husky coaching debut a successful one on Sept. 3, 2011 as the Huskies topped Fordham of the FCS. The Cheshire, Conn. native was named the 28th head football coach in UConn history on January 14, 2011.

Pasqualoni is the all-time winningest coach in BIG EAST Conference league wins with 65 and overall wins with 113. He is just one of two league coaches in history to win four BIG EAST Championships. His overall college coaching record stands at 149-88-1 (34-17 at WCSU, 107-59-1 at Syracuse and 8-12 at UConn).

Pasqualoni has had a highly-successful career on all levels of football -- professional, college and high school. He was the head coach at Western Connecticut from 1982-86 and led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1985.

He had an extremely successful tenure as the head coach at Syracuse from 1991-2004. Pasqualoni led the Orange to 107 wins, four BIG EAST titles and a 6-3 postseason record. Among his bowl appearances at Syracuse were two Fiesta Bowls (1992 and ‘97) and an Orange Bowl (‘98).

For the previous five seasons, Pasqualoni has served on NFL staffs -- with Dallas in 2006-07 and ‘10 and with Miami in 2008-09.

His first coaching job was an assistant coach at Cheshire HS from 1972-75.

He is a 1972 Penn State graduate.

USF Head Coach Skip Holtz Skip Holtz is in his third year as the head coach at USF and in 2010 he led the Bulls to an 8-5 record and defeated Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Prior to the USF position, he was the head coach at East Carolina for five seasons as the Pirates won back-to-back Conference USA Championships in his last two years there. Holtz led ECU to appearances in the Liberty Bowl after the 2008 and ‘09 seasons and the Hawaii Bowl following the 2007 campaign.

Holtz was also the head coach here at UConn from 1994-1998 and led the Huskies to a 10-3 mark in 1998 and earned a trip to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs -- the school’s first-ever postseason appearance.

From 1999-2003, he was on the coaching staff at South Carolina and from 1990-93 was an assistant at Notre Dame. He also coached at Colorado State (1989) and Florida State (1987-88). He is a 1986 Notre Dame graduate..

WTIC is the state’s only 50,000 watt signal and can be heard in 23 states and parts of Canada. The 2012-13 year marks the 21st consecutive season that WTIC is the flagship for UConn sports. The 2012-13 football and men’s and women’s basketball season also marks the first year that the radio rights are held by IMG College, which is UConn’s multi-media rights partner.

UConn football on home Saturday dates gets going early with “Breakfast At The Rent” with Ray Dunaway and Scott Gray beginning at 6:00 a.m. For the Temple game, the UConn Tailgate Show will air from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with Kevin Nathan and Bob Joyce. The pregame show begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the game and then postgame “Husky Talk” with Kevin Nathan.

Other affiliates for UConn football on the UConn IMG Sports Network include WILI 1400-AM in Willimantic and WAVZ-1300 AM in New Haven.

UConn and SNY SNY is the “the official television home of the UConn Huskies football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs”. In conjunction with UConn, SNY is entering its third year of a comprehensive, multi-year partnership that made SNY the official regional television home of UConn men’s basketball and football. The excitement continues as SNY will now be the home of UConn women’s basketball starting in 2012-13, which will lead to unique cross promotional opportunities with all three programs on the same outlet.

Series Notes UConn vs. USF History Saturday’s game is the tenth meeting between UConn and South Florida and the Huskies lead 5-4. UConn has won five of seven BIG EAST meetings -- with the home team winning the first five before UConn broke through at USF in 2010.

Last season, UConn topped USF by a 16-10 score at Rentschler Field on October 15. Lyle McCombs rushed for 130 yards in that game and Dave Teggart hit on three field goals. The Huskies did not have an offensive TD in the game. Cornerback Byron Jones returned a fumble 10-yards for a third quarter touchdown for UConn.

B.J. Daniels had 64 yards of rushing and 164 yards of passing in the game for the Bulls.

Teggart was the dramatic hero in both the 2009 and ’10 games with the Bulls for the Huskies. On Dec. 4, 2010 at Raymond James Stadium, Teggart kicked a then career-long 52-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to play to lift UConn to a 19- 16 win and clinch the Huskies first-ever appearance in a BCS game.

UConn led at the half 10-3 in 2010, scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 55-yard interception return by Lawrence Wilson. The Huskies led

At UConn home games, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game. It takes place between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates...The offerings change each game, but activities typically include inflatable games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs....The “Husky Walk” is a chance for fans to welcome the UConn team as they get off the team buses and head to the stadium. HUSKIES HAVE BEEN BOWL ELIGIBLE The UConn football team has been bowl eligible for four times in the past five years and in sixth of the past nine. The 2010 UConn football team won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to play in the school’s first-ever BCS game -- the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. UConn made the bowl eligible mark for the sixth time in the past eight seasons -- and the fourth consecutive.

UConn lost to Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and its defeated South Carolina by a 20-7 score in the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl. The Huskies also went to the International Bowl in 2009 and defeated Buffalo. In 2007, UConn was 9-3 in the regular season and went on to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. In 2004, the Huskies went 7-4 in the regular season and won the Motor City Bowl. In 2003, UConn was 9-3, but did not go to a bowl because of its independent status.

With his five wins in 2011 and three this season, Pasqualoni is also first in league history in overall wins with 115 to top the mark of Beamer with 108.

Griffin was placed on both the Mackey Award and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists. The Mackey is awarded to the nation’s top tight end, while the Lombardi honors the nation’s top lineman or linebacker. Griffin was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011 and ranked third on UConn with 33 receptions, three for touchdowns, and 499 yards.

McCombs earned a spot on both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists. The Maxwell Award is given to the country’s top player in college football and the Doak Walker is awarded to the nation’s top running back.

Moore was honored with a spot on both the Lombardi Award and Butkus Award watch lists. The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker and recognizes 51 players on its watch list in the preseason to honor the jersey number of Dick Butkus.

Williams was named to three award watch lists. He landed on the Bednarik and Lombardi Award watch lists as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list. The Bednarik and Nagurski are each awarded to the nation’s best defensive player.

HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLS Connecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year.

The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMS The game vs. Rutgers on Oct. 13 marked the 19th time in school history that the Huskies faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. UConn’s only win in those 19 games came on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct. 5, 2002.

UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICS The UConn football program continues to be a leader in the BIG EAST Conference in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes.

UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the BIG EAST and within four points of the second place team and this fall, the 2011 GSR came out and UConn was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universities that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate.

UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game.

In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943).

HUSKIES VS. THE BIG EAST UConn owns an all-time mark of 25-33 in BIG EAST Conference games since joining the league for football in 2004. The Huskies posted their best conference record with a 5-2 mark in 2007 and ‘10. UConn had a five-game BIG EAST Conference win streak to end the 2010 season – the longest in school history.

Huskies On The Road Since 2002 The Huskies have put together a 23-35 road record since 2002.

In non-conference road affairs over that same span, Connecticut has posted a mark of 18-12 and has won ten of its last 15 such games.

Huskies Vs. Non-Conference Foes Since 2002 Connecticut now boasts a 45-22 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002.

The Huskies have won 20 of their last 29 regular season non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11 and North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12.

UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011) and 3-2 (2012).

HUSKIES and THE NFL As the NFL continues it season, a total of 13 former Huskies are with NFL teams. UConn had 11 former players that were on active NFL rosters in 2009 (a school high) and that number was ten last season. The 2009 NFL Draft made history for the Huskies as four UConn players were selected in the first 63 selections.

UConn is the only BIG EAST school to have four players picked that early since the league was reorganized in 2005. UConn had two players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft and four more in ’11 with one in 2012.

UConn and THE CFL In addition to the NFL players, there are five former Huskies in the Canadian Football League this year. * Martin Bedard (Montreal Alouettes) is in his fourth year and was part of two Grey Cup championship teams in his first two years in the league. * Danny Desriveaux is in his seventh year in the league and is now with Toronto. * Larry Taylor is in his fifth year in the league and is now with Calgary after spending the first three with Montreal. He was the 2009 CFL Special Teams Player of the Year. Taylor was part of the Montreal Grey Cup winning team in 2009 and ’10. * Julius Williams, who played at UConn through 2008, is in his second year with the Edmonton Eskimos. * Jordan Younger is in his ninth season -- all with Toronto.

HUSKIES ON THE REBOUND UConn is 33-19 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002.

In the opening game vs. UMass, the Huskies were coming off as they lost the 2011 season finale at Cincinnati and the Maryland win was coming off a loss to N.C. State while the Buffalo win was coming off a loss to Western Michigan. The Temple loss was coming off a loss to Rutgers and the Syracuse loss was coming off the Temple loss.

BALL CONTROL IS THE KEY A telling sign of UConn’s strong performance on both sides of the ball during its tenure as a FBS program has been its ability to both record and prevent long drives.

Since the start of the 2002 season, UConn’s offense has strung together 86 scoring drives of at least 80 yards while the Husky defense has surrendered just 66 such marches.

UConn also holds a 22-9 advantage over its opponents in the number of 90-yard and over drives since becoming a I-A program.

November 3, 2012 • at USF HUSKIES DOMINATING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL Over the past 121 games, UConn has outgained its opponent 69 times. This stretch, like many UConn trends, dates back to a 2824 loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 26, 2002.

Offense Notes DeLorenzo Makes First Career Start UConn redshirt freshman tailback Max DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) made his first career start on Saturday vs. Temple. He had a solid day with 23 carries for 91 yards with a long of 20.

He became the first Connecticut native to start at tailback for the Huskies since Matt Lawrence (Bloomfield) in 2004. He did not have any carries vs. Syracuse on Oct. 19.

McCombs Hits The 100-Yard Mark Redshirt sophomore running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a breakout season last year as he rushed for 1,151 yards and seven TDs on 275 carries. He was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and was a Second Team All-Conference pick. McCombs was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country and trailed the leader by only 0.46 yards.

McCombs rushing yardage was the ninth-highest in UConn single-season history while his carries were fourth. He was just the second UConn freshman (true or redshirt) to rush for 1,000 yards or more in a season.

McCombs carried the ball 23 times for 119 yards on Sept. 22 vs. Western Michigan – marking the first time he has gone over 100 yards this season. It marks the seventh time in his career that he hit the 100-yard mark and he has 11 career rushing TDs.

McCombs rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries vs. UMass with one rushing TD and then had 60 yards on 20 carries with one TD vs. N.C. State. He had a 43-yard reception in the fourth quarter vs. the Wolfpack that set up his five-yard TD rush on the next play. McCombs rushed for 94 yards on 27 carries with one TD in the win over Maryland and had 29 carries for 97 yards vs. Buffalo. He had 12 carries for 32 yards vs. Rutgers and missed the Temple game with an injury. He returned vs. Syracuse and had 16 yards on 12 carries.

Whitmer Hits Career Highs Vs. WMU UConn redshirt sophomore Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was named the team’s starter by Paul Pasqualoni heading into preseason camp and made his first collegiate start vs. UMass on Aug. 30. Whitmer was 15 of 25 in the air for 219 yards with two interceptions and was 15 for 27 for 204 yards with three interceptions vs. N.C. State. He was 10 of 16 in the air for 68 yards with no interceptions in the win over Maryland. Against Western Michigan, he had career highs with 28 completions, 44 pass attempts, three TD passes and 333 yards. He was 15 of 22 for 227 yards and one TD vs. Buffalo and was 14 of 32 for 191 yards and four interceptions vs. Rutgers.

Whitmer was 22 of 39 in the air for 293 yards and two TDs in the loss to Temple (Oct. 13). In the first quarter of the game, he was eight of 10 for 159s yard and two TDs. His 42-yard TD pass in the first quarter to TE Ryan Griffin was the longest of his collegiate career.

He was 23 of 41 for 296 yards with an interception and a TD vs. Syracuse on Oct. 19. In the last two games (Temple and Syracuse), he has thrown for 589 yards and three TD with just one interception.

Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semes-

ter and participated in spring practice and has three years of eligibility. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-Kansas Junior College Conference first team honors and earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011.

Whitmer was named to The Champaign News-Gazette’s All-State team following his senior year of high school at Downers Grove (Ill.) South. He earned all state and all-area honors.

He was 18 of 27 in the air for 187 yards and two touchdowns in UConn’s Blue-White Spring Football game on April 21, 2012.

McCummings At “The Wildcat” Redshirt sophomore Scott McCummings (Natick, Mass.) has been playing all season at quarterback in the “Wildcat” spot and had his best game of the season on Sept. 15 vs. Maryland. McCummings had eight carries in the game for 44 yards with one rushing. He scored on a three-yard run with 12:35 left to go in the second quarter to give UConn a 14-0 lead. McCummings also had a key role in UConn’s final TD drive of the game as he had a pass for two yards and three rushes for 30 yards, including a 21-yarder that moved the ball to the Maryland 19.

McCummings has a total of 76 rushing yards on the season on 29 carries.

Davis Leads The Receivers UConn’s leading receiver this year is redshirt sophomore Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who has 25 receptions for 370 yards and a touchdown. Davis had just six receptions in all of 2011 with 73 yards. He had a career-high nine catches and 123 yards vs. Western Michigan and also his first TD reception.

Davis had five receptions for 79 yards and a long of 26 and then backed it up with two catches for 27 yards vs. N.C. State and one reception for seven yards vs. Maryland. He had two receptions for 32 yards vs. Buffalo.

The Huskies got a boost at the wide receiver position with two players who did not play in 2011. Redshirt sophomore Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is a transfer from Boston College who sat out in ’11 due to NCAA rules. Phillips had his best day as a collegiate player on Saturday against Temple with seven receptions for 100 yards. He had one reception for nine yards at BC in his freshman year of 2010. Following his senior year in high school, he played in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Also back for 2012 is senior Michael Smith (Houston, Texas), who missed last year. From 2008-10, Smith had 73 receptions for the Huskies for 922 yards and a pair of TDs. Smith was the leading receiver on the 2010 BIG EAST Champion UConn team which went on to play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Smith made three receptions for 30 yards vs. UMass, one vs.

N.C. State for four yards, three for 35 yards vs. WMU and two for 26 yards vs. Buffalo. He had three receptions for 52 yards vs.

Rutgers and against Temple, he had five receptions for 54 yards with his first TD reception since 2010. He had four receptions for 61 yards against Syracuse.

The most experienced UConn receiver is senior Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.), who was the fifth-leading receiver for the Huskies in 2011, and third this year with 16. He made one reception for 16 yards vs. UMass and had a career-high three receptions vs. N.C. State for 59 yards. He then had four recep-

Hyppolite Makes An Impact Redshirt junior running back Martin Hyppolite (Wakefield, Mass.) had a career-high six carries for 60 yards vs. Buffalo (Sept. 29), including a 50-yard TD rush in the second quarter to give UConn a 17-7 lead. Hyppolite entered the game with just five rushing yards this year and ten for his career. Hyppolite played as a backup TB in his true freshman year of 2010 but then missed all of last year with a knee injury. He carried the ball five times vs. Rutgers for -2 yards in his first career start and twice vs.

Temple for four yards. He did not carry the ball vs. Syracuse.

Tight Ends Are Tough Redshirt senior tight end Ryan Griffin (Londouderry, N.H.) was a second team All-BIG EAST selection last year and is moving up the career record book. Griffin is second in UConn history for receptions by a tight end with 105 while No. 1 is former NFL standout Brian Kozlowski (1989-92) with 159.. Griffin is third in receiving yards by a tight end with 1,302 while Kozlowski also holds that record with 1,788.

Griffin has had a touchdown reception in each of the past two games, with a 42-yarder vs. Temple and a 32-yarder vs.

Syracuse. He also had a 36-yard TD reception vs. Buffalo earlier in the season andnow had six career TD receptions, which makes him fifth in Husky TE history.

Griffin owns two of the top ten receiving seasons by a tight end in school history with 33 in 2011 (8th) and 31 in 2010 (tied for tenth).

Redshirt senior tight end John Delahunt (Ottawa, Ont.) is also having an outstanding year as he is tied as the sixth-leading receiver on the team with 12 receptions for 154 yards and a TD. He entered the 2012 season with just 11 career receptions for 118 yards.

DEFENSE NOTES Solid Experience Back As has become a yearly habit, the UConn defense returned a strong returning nucleus this season. UConn returns eight of 11 starters to this year’s unit. Senior defensive end Jesse Joseph (Laval, Que.) led the way with 32 career starts, while senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) had 29, senior linebacker Sio Moore (Apex, N.C.) had 21 and senior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) has 19. Joseph tore his left Achilles tendon at Maryland (Sept. 15) and is out for the remainder of the season.

Gawdy Defensive Numbers THis Season The Connecticut defense has established itself as one of the top units in college football this season. UConn is 10th in total defense (291.13 yards per game), 22nd in rushing defense (118.38 yards per game), 20th in tackles for loss (7.25 per game), 23rd in sacks (2.63 per game), 13th in pass defense (172.75 yards per game) and 21st in scoring defense (19.25 points per game).

UConn leads the BIG EAST in total defense and pass defense.

UConn has only given up 22 points in the first quarter of games this year (field goal by WMU, TD vs. Buffalo, two FG by

The Husky defense led to a shutout vs. UMass on August 30 and limited the Minutemen to just three first downs, three yards of rushing and 59 total offensive yards. The shutout was the first by UConn since a 38-0 win over Maine on Sept. 8, 2007 and the first over a FCS team since a 38-0 win over Buffalo on Sept. 1, 2005.

The three first downs tied a school record for least allowed in a single game as UConn also gave up three vs. Navy in 2002.

The three yards of rushing was the seventh lowest allowed in school history.

The defense also stepped up vs. N.C. State (Sept. 8) and limited the Wolfpack to seven points, 12 first downs and 54 yards of rushing.

The seven points given up by UConn after two games this season was the fewest since UConn began the 2005 season with shutouts vs. Buffalo (38-0) and Liberty (Sept. 10).

Trevardo Nears Career Sack Record Senior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) is one of three Huskies ranked among the top 78 in sacks per game. Williams is tied for 15th in the country and is first in the BIG EAST at 0.94 per game. He is the sixth-leading total tackler on the Husky team this year.

Williams is now second in school history in career sacks with 26.5 while Mark Michaels is the career leader with 27 from 198285. Williams is sixth in UConn career history in tackles for a loss with 36.0. Uyi Osunde (1999-03) is the leader there with 49.

Williams gained preseason notice for 2012 by being named to preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lombardi Award.

Williams earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors last year and had a tremendous second half of 2011. Of his 43 tackles in 2011, 20 of them were made in the final five games and of his 15 tackles for a loss, 10.5 were in the final five. He led the BIG EAST and was ranked second in the country in sacks per game with 1.04 and was second in the BIG EAST and 32nd in the country in tackles for a loss.

Williams had three tackles vs. UMass and with 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. He had five tackles with three for a loss of 11 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of ten vs. N.C. State. Against Maryland, he had four tackles with a sack and one for a loss and had a sack for a loss of six yards vs. WMU. Williams had one sacks for a loss of one yard vs. Buffalo and one sack for a loss of two yards vs. Temple.

Smallwood 9th In The Country In TFL Redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) leads UConn in tackles this season with 85 and is ninth in the country (and leads BIG EAST) in tackles per game at 10.62.

He is also tied for 16th in the country in tackles for a loss with 1.63 per game – which leads the BIG EAST.

Smallwood has been honored twice this season as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. He was honored after the Sept. 15 win over Maryland when he had a game-high 14 tackles — five more than any other player in the game — to go with 2.5 sacks, 3.5 TFLs and a forced fumble.

Smallwood was also UConn’s leading tackler in the opener vs. UMass as he had seven tackles with 3.5 for a loss. For his efforts, he was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.

Smallwood started all 12 games last year for the Huskies and was the second-leading tackler on the team.

Gratz Returns For A Touchdown UConn redshirt senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) returned an interception for 37-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against UMass. UConn returned just one interception for a touchdown last year.

The “pick-six” was the second of Gratz’s career as he had a 46-yarder against Oklahoma in the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Gratz, who also had an interception on Maryland’s first play from scrimmage on September 15, now has seven career interceptions.

Double-Digit Tackles for Johnson Redshirt senior linebacker Jory Johnson (Mobile, Ala.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for the second consecutive week following the Rutgers (Oct. 6) game. He followed up a career-high 14 tackles against Buffalo (Sept. 29) with a gamehigh 10 tackles at Rutgers. Johnson recorded double-digit tackles in a third-straight game with 12 against Temple (Oct. 13).

Stephen Returns To Lineup UConn redshirt junior Shamar Stephen (Brookville, N.Y.) returned to the Husky lineup on Sept. 15 vs. Maryland and has now started both the WMU and Buffalo games after missing the first two games of ’12 with a knee injury suffered in preseason camp.

Stephen had begun camp as a projected starter on the defensive line as played in 24 of 25 games over the past two seasons. He had three tackles vs. WMU, one against Maryland and Buffalo and five with half a tackle for a loss vs. Rutgers. He had three tackles vs. Temple and two vs. Syracuse.

Against Rutgers, Stephen made a season-high five tackles and blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt. The blocked kick was the first blocked field goal by Connecticut since James Hargrave against Murray State (Sep. 4, 2004).

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES Solid Start, But Tough Day, For Christen Redshirt junior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) had connected on seven of his first ten collegiate field goal attempts and all 14 of his extra point attempts in his first year as the team’s placekicker entering Saturday’s game vs. Temple. Christen had handled kickoff duties only for the past two years and is replacing UConn’s all-time leading kicker Dave Teggart this year.

While Chrsiten made both his PAT attempts vs. the Owls, he missed four field goals in the game – tries of 36, 42, 44 (blocked) and 28 (OT) yards.

Christen was the first player to appear in the interview after the game, which prompted Jeff Jacobs of The Hartford Courant to write: “And then you remember this is a 22-year-old college kid, and he was hurting inside. No, Christen didn’t do his job as a kicker on this day. He did do his job as a stand-up young man. He was the first player in the interview room. He answered the questions with a forthrightness that should be the envy of some professional athletes 10 years his senior. And when he was finished, he shook hands with reporters.”

Christen connected on field goals of 36, 47 and 19 yards vs.

UMass and hit on two extra points. He connected on his one PAT attempt vs. N.C. State. He missed a 49-yard field goal against Maryland, but came back to make a 34-yarder. He also had three PAT vs. the Terps. He missed a 51-yarder against WMU, but later made a 32-yarder and hit on all three of his PATs. He had a

He came back against Syracuse and connected on a 23yard FG in the first quarter.

UConn stands at 45-17 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 25-7 mark in non-conference games.

Wagner Already In The Books UConn redshirt junior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already established himself as a top performer in the UConn record books.

Wagner has been the Husky punter for the past two seasons and was a Second Team All-Conference pick last year.

This season, 20 of his 51 punts have been downed inside the 20 yard line, including three of five punts on Oct. 6 vs. Rutgers.

He is now second in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 40.9 average, while the leader is Desi Cullen (2006-09) with 41.1 Wagner is fourth in career number of punts (210) and second in career yardage (8,584).

Michigan, Tennessee Will Visit Rentschler Field Following UConn’s trip to Ann Arbor on Sept. 4, 2010, the Wolverines will come to Rentschler Field on Sept. 21, 2013 to take on the Huskies.

UConn will also play a home-and-home series with Tennessee beginning in 2015 with the Volunteers coming to Rentschler Field on Sept. 26 with a return trip to Knoxville on Sept. 3, 2016.

Other upcoming non-conference opponents coming to Rentschler Field include Maryland (2013) and Virginia (2106).

UConn has now played host to non-conference opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 10, Big XII and Southeastern Conference at Rentschler Field.

Nick Williams Joins Elite Company UConn senior Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown on Sept. 15 for the opening score of the Maryland game. Williams becomes just the fifth UConn player in history, and only second in the “FBS Era”, to have both a kick-off and punt return for a TD during a career. He joins Larry Taylor (2004-07), Jordan Younger (1996-99), Nick Giaquinto (1975-76) and Rich Hedgepeth (1974-76).

Williams was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week following his game vs. Maryland.

Williams has two KO returns for a touchdown – both coming in the 2010 season when he led the country in kickoff return average at 35.29 yards per return.

He is second in school history in number of kickoff returns with 69 while Tory Taylor had 89 from 1995-98. He is first in net yards with 1,874. He is tied for first in KOR for touchdowns with two and is the career leader in kickoff return average at 27.2.

Williams is sixth in UConn history in punt return average at 8.5.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES Rentschler Field The Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.

Fan No. 2,000,000 On Friday, Sept. 16, UConn welcomed the 2,000,000th fan to Renstchler Field in its history. That lucky fan was Shane Buzzell of Manchester, Conn.. The Huskies have sold out 29 of their first 61 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 95.2-pct. Of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,361,541 fans, or an average of 38,089 per game.

Rentschler Field Proves Friendly For Huskies The Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rentschler Field in 2011.

The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. Prior to the Iowa

shirt senior quarterback Mike Glennon threw a 46-yard third-quarter touchdown to receiver Bryan Underwood and the Wolfpack held on to beat the University of Connecticut 10-7 on Saturday before a crowd of 34,202 at Rentschler Field. UConn and NC State are both 1-1 on the season.

Glennon and UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer each threw for 204 yards. But Whitmer also had three passes intercepted as the Wolfpack forced four Huskies turnovers.

All-America cornerback David Amerson recorded his 14th career interception and knocked away a fourth-down pass on Connecticut’s final drive to secure the win.

Glennon completed 15 of his 30 passes but was sacked six times.

NC State had just 258 yards of offense, but held the Huskies to 239.

UConn redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs rushed for 60 yards and caught a 43-yard swing pass that set up his five-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run to pull UConn to within three points with seven minutes left.

Glennon opened the next drive by hitting Tobias Palmer with two quick passes to move into UConn territory. But the Huskies defense stiffened at the 27, and the Wolfpack, heading into a stiff wind, decided to go for it on fourth-and-two. Glennon’s pass to Underwood fell incomplete, giving UConn one more drive with 3:17 remaining.

Whitmer moved the Huskies from their own 27 to the 46 before being sacked by linebacker Brian Slay on third down and having Amerson knock down the fourth-down pass.

A bizarre UConn turnover led to NC State’s touchdown. Safety Earl Wolff tipped a Whitmer pass into the hands of Huskies redshirt senior tight end John Delahunt, who then fumbled the ball back to Wolff.

Three plays later, Underwood ran under a Glennon pass, catching it with his fingertips at the 18-yard line and running the rest of the way into the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

Amerson picked off Whitmer’s pass on the next UConn play, but Niklas Sade’s 44-yard FG attempt went wide right.

N.C. State’s three halfbacks - Mustafa Green, Tony Creecy and James Washington - combined for just 82 yards.

The first points didn’t come until late in the second quarter, when NC State put together the game’s first sustained drive of 15 plays. But after moving 61 yards, a sack by senior Trevardo Williams forced the Wolfpack to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Sade with just under three minutes left in the first half.

Connecticut’s best scoring chance before halftime came when Nick Williams’ 30-yard catch set the Huskies up at the N.C. State 37.

But after a penalty, Whitmer tripped and fell while dropping back, and an 18-yard catch by Williams set up a fourth-and-2. UConn went for it rather than try a 47-yard field goal into a stiff wind, and Whitmer was sacked by linebacker Rickey Dowdy.

UConn won the early battle for field possession, but could not capitalize. The Huskies failed to get a first down after starting their first three drives on their own 39, 48 and the NC State 45. The Huskies didn’t have a first down until the end of the quarter when NC State’s T.Y. McGill was called for roughing Whitmer.

McCombs rushed for 94 yards and his fourth-quarter touchdown.

McCummings, who also came in at quarterback occasionally, ran for a three-yard score that gave the Huskies a 14-0 first-half lead. That came after Williams scored the game’s first touchdown on a 58-yard punt return.

Connecticut started quickly in going against their former coach, Randy Edsall, who left after 2010 to come to Maryland (2-1).

The Huskies outgained Maryland 148-80 in total yardage in the first half and controlled the ball for 18 minutes, 40 seconds. They also came up with timely plays, converting four of nine third-down situations to keep the Maryland offense off the field.

Connecticut opened the scoring on Williams’ 58-yard punt return, and redshirt junior Chad Christen’s extra point gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 7:05 left in the first quarter.

They took advantage of a short field to score their second touchdown, gaining possession at the Maryland 36 after the Terrapins were forced to punt from their four. McCummings’ three-yard run seven plays later made it 14-0 with 12:35 left in the half.

Maryland’s offense finally awakened on the next possession. A key play came on fourth-and-four from the Connecticut 37, when quarterback Perry Hills completed an 18-yard pass to Stefon Diggs. One play later, Wes Brown ran for a 19-yard touchdown, and Brad Craddock’s extra point cut the lead to 14-7 with 10:24 remaining in the half.

Connecticut redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood sacked Hills and forced a third-quarter fumble that redshirt sophomore Angelo Pruitt recovered for the Huskies at the Maryland 23. UConn couldn’t pick up a first down, but Christen kicked a 34-yard field goal with 3:29 left in the quarter for a 17-7 lead.

Smallwood caused problems for the Terrapins throughout the game, with four of his 14 tackles going for losses, including three sacks.

After a 75-yard drive, Maryland made it 17-14 on the second play of the fourth quarter when Hills threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs on third-and-te. The Terrapins’ Marcus Leak tipped the pass and Diggs grabbed it for a touchdown to make it 17-14.

The Huskies answered on their next possession, driving 76 yards to take a 24-14 lead on McCombs’ 11-yard touchdown run.

Hills ran for a 10-yard touchdown that cut the Connecticut lead to 24-21 with 4:39 left.

After getting the ball back following a Huskies punt, Maryland reached the Connecticut 39 before its drive stalled with 17 seconds left.

Both teams are now 2-2 on the season.

Carder completed 18 of 34 passes before leaving the game late in the third quarter after hitting his throwing hand on a helmet. Josh Schaffer caught six of Carder’s passes for 104 yards, including a 30yard touchdown early in the third quarter that put Western Michigan ahead 24-7.

UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer was 28 of 44 for 333 yards passing and three touchdowns for Connecticut. Redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs rushed for 119 yards while redshirt sophomore Geremy Davis caught nine passes for 123 yards for the Huskies.

Connecticut pulled within 24-17 on a two-yard pass from Whitmer to John Delahunt and a 32-yard field goal from Chad Christen midway through the fourth quarter. But on the Huskies’ next drive, Desmond Bozeman returned a Whitmer fumble 53 yards for a touchdown. It was the Broncos’ first fumble recovery for a touchdown in three years. The score also pushed Western Michigan past the 10,000-point total in team history.

Whitmer added a seven-yard TD pass to Davis with 54 seconds to play, but the Broncos recovered the onside kick.

Antoin Scriven scored from one yard out early in the second quarter to cap an 88-yard drive and give Western Michigan a 10-0 lead. It marked his ninth career touchdown, all on one-yard runs.

The Broncos followed that with a 36-yard drive capped by Dareyon Chance’s nine-yard run for a 17-point lead. Chance led Western Michigan with 66 yards rushing.

The Huskies finally got on the scoreboard with 2:36 left in the first half on Whitmer’s 9-yard pass to redshirt senior tight end Ryan Griffin.

Donald Celiscar’s interception at the three-yard line stopped a UConn drive midway in the first quarter.

UConn had a 425-330 advantage in total yards. This marked the first appearance at Western Michigan for a BIG EAST opponent.

The start of the game was delayed by a half-hour because of lightning storms in the area.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer, who completed passes to eight different receivers, threw for 227 yards and another score as UConn opened up a 24-7 lead in the third quarter and held on to win.

Buffalo, which was playing without injured running back Branden Oliver, had the ball with a chance to tie late in the game, but failed to convert on fourth down at its own 39 yard line. Quarterback Alex Zordich threw for 220 yards and ran for 76 to lead the Bulls.

UConn improved to 2-1 this season against the Mid-American conference. The Huskies beat Massachusetts in their season opener, but lost last week at Western Michigan.

McCombs, UConn’s 166-pound tailback was the Huskies workhorse, carrying the ball 29 times for 97 yards. His two-yard fourth-down touchdown run gave the Huskies a 24-7 lead with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

But Buffalo went into its bag of tricks to pull within 24-14. Zordich completed a four-yard pass to Alex Neutz in the right flat, who then pitched the ball to running back Brandon Murie. He raced down the right sideline, breaking a Byron Jones’ tackle on the way to a 50-yard touchdown.

The Bulls got within a touchdown on a 44-yard field goal by Patrick Clarke with 2:23 left after a 43 yard pass from Zordich to Neutz.

UConn redshirt sophomore wide receiver Geremy Davis recovered the onside kick, but UConn punted it away three plays later giving Buffalo one more chance to tie.

The Bulls took the ball at their own 20 and managed one first down. But Zordich was stuffed by redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood after a two-yard gain on a fourth-and-four from the 39, and the Huskies ran out the clock.

Connecticut had big plays on back-to-back drives in the first half to take a 17-7 lead. Tight end Ryan Griffin’s 36-yard catch and run over the middle on the first play of the second quarter capped a 10-play 92-yard drive that gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead.

The Huskies then went 75 yards in five plays the next time they had the ball. Hyppolite, who had just four carries coming into the game, took a pitchout on his fifth and went 50 yards off the right side for the Huskies second touchdown.

Connecticut moved the ball well from the opening kickoff. A 24-yard pass from Whitmer to senior wide receiver Nick Williams set up a 29-yard field goal by redshirt senior Chad Christen that gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Buffalo responded with a 10 play, 75-yard drive that included a 30yard screen pass to Devin Campbell on a fourth down that set up Murie’s 4-yard touchdown run. The Bulls special teams then stepped up, executing a successful onside kick, before the offense stalled.

UConn came in ranked fifth in the nation against the rush, allowing just 51 yards per game, but gave up 141 to the Bulls. Buffalo came into the game giving up 34 points a game.

The focus has been to improve the running game, but it was tougher early on when Whitmer and his teammates began the game without top running back Lyle McCombs, who sat for the first quarter for breaking team rules earlier in the week. Playing against a Rutgers team that leads the nation in rush defense, UConn wound up with 53 yards on 28 attempts, led by McCombs with 32 yards on 12 attempts. He came in averaging 90.4 yards per game.

Despite all its offensive woes, which included five turnovers, the Huskies might have pulled off the upset if it had taken advantage of its opportunities.

Shamar Stephen blocked a Rutgers field goal attempt in the second quarter, which led to the Huskies only points, a 19-yard field goal by Chad Christen. It was the first blocked field goal by UConn since 2004.

The Scarlet Knights (5-0, 2-0 Big East) are off to their best start since 2006, and they avenged a bitter loss to the Huskies that ended last regular season and kept Rutgers from sharing the conference title.

Jawan Jamison ran it 28 times and recorded his sixth straight 100yard game and Gary Nova hooked up with Mark Harrison on a 14-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter.

Warren put it away with 3:44 left in the fourth when he grabbed a pass down the middle from Chandler Whitmer, and then darted through would-be-tacklers toward the end zone.

Warren pushed across the goal line with some help from his teammates.

UConn benched McCombs for the first quarter. He finished with 32 yards on 12 carries and the Huskies (3-3, 0-1) were held to their worst scoring output since getting shut out by Louisville in the middle of the 2010 season.

Rutgers has won six of the last eight meetings, but lost last year’s game 40-22.

Linebackers Khaseem Greene and Steve Beauharnais were all over UConn’s runners, and the Huskies couldn’t keep Rutgers blitzes from forcing Whitmer to hurry his throws. Greene also had an interception late in the fourth quarter.

Rutgers chipped away offensively with Jamison running tough against a defense that had only been allowing 74 yards per game on the ground. Nova rarely went downfield but finished 18 for 27 for 157 yards.

The Scarlet Knights’ first drive of the second half was the best of the game for either team, an 84-yarder on nine plays, highlighted by Jamison’s 28-yard run and capped when Harrison slipped a couple of tacklers and reached into the end zone with 9:09 left to make it 13-3.

Rutgers turned two first-quarter turnovers by UConn into two field goals by Kyle Federico in a span of 3:15.

UConn put together one solid drive in the first half, going 43 yards on 10 plays behind the running of McCombs and backup quarterback Scott McCummings. The drive stalled inside the 5 and Chad Christen kicked a 19-yard field goal to make it 6-3.

football team by a 17-14 score before a Homecoming crowd of 37,279 at Rentschler Field.

Temple senior running back Montel Harris, a transfer from Boston College, ran 30 times for 142 yards and a touchdown for the Owls, who improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. UConn is 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST and was held to just two first-quarter touchdowns.

UConn redshirt junior kicker Chad Christen missed four field goal attempts, including a 28-yarder on UConn’s overtime possession.

Husky redshirt sophomore Chandler Whitmer threw for 293 yards and both of UConn’s scores and redshirt freshman running back Max DeLorenzo had 91 yards rushing for the Huskies in his first career start.

Temple trailed until sophomore Jalen Fitzpatrick caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Chris Coyer with 19 seconds in regulation. The Owls have won two consecutive BIG EAST games for the first time in the program’s history.

The touchdown was set up by a 33-yard catch on the left sideline by junior Deon Miller on a third-and-13 from the UConn 47, which followed a 13-yard catch by Harris on a fourth down that moved the ball into UConn territory. Temple had failed on fourth down on two other fourth-quarter drives.

Christen had a chance to secure the win for UConn, but his 45-yard field-goal attempt with just under three minutes to play was blocked. He had missed earlier from 38 and 42 yards.

Whitmer completed 10 of his first 12 passes, including a 15-yard strike over the middle to Mike Smith for a touchdown that gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead. On his next drive, he found redshirt senior tight end Ryan Griffin over the middle for a 42-yard score.

Whitmer completed 22 of 39 passes for 293 yards and no interceptions. He had thrown four interceptions at Rutgers and came in with 10 on the season and just four touchdown passes.

Coyer, who threw for just 132 yards, also ran for 51 for the Owls.

The Huskies kept Temple pinned in its own territory for most of the first half. The Owls managed just eight yards and one first down on their first four possessions. But they had 113 on their next two.

Harris broke a 37-yard run and a 24-yarder for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7. The Owls were driving again before Harris was stripped of the ball by linebacker redshirt sophomore Yawin Smallwood at Connecticut’s 26-yard line.

Both teams played without their top running backs. Temple’s Matt Brown, suffered an ankle injury last week, and UConn redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs sprained his wrist. Without McCombs, the Huskies managed just 88 rushing yards. Harris ran for 133 yards in the Owls’ win last week over South Florida.

The win gave Temple coach Steve Addazio a victory over his mentor. UConn’s Paul Pasqualoni was the head coach at Western Connecticut and hired Addazio to his first assistant coaching job there in 1985. The win gave Temple its first road win of the season. The Huskies came in ranked sixth in the nation in total defense, giving up just over 82 yards per game on the ground.

Syracuse’s Jerome Smith finished with a career-high 133 yards rushing on 19 carries, SU quarterback Ryan Nassib was 14 of 20 for 251 yards passing and Ross Krautman kicked four field goals for the Orange.

The Orange focused during practice this week on creating turnovers and the hard work paid off in the second quarter.

Orange free safety Durell Eskridge blitzed, forcing a fumble by Team Statistics Whitmer, and Cameron Lynch recovered for the Orange near midfield.
