Gift Milestones Here at the University of Central Oklahoma Foundation we believe every gift, no matter the amount, makes a sincere difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff. That is why it was so difficult to select gift milestones over the

last decade. Because we know that all gifts are given with purpose, and it has been an honor to help bring your philanthropic vision to life.

Troy Smith In 2007, UCO received the largest single unrestricted cash gift in its history from Sonic Restaurant founder Troy Smith and his wife Dollie. The Smiths gave shares of Sonic Corporation stock. These funds have been used to help support the Academy of Contemporary Music, the College of Fine Arts and Design, Old North Renovation and the College of Business.

C. Hubert Gragg UCO received a generous gift from C. Hubert Gragg of Newcastle, Oklahoma, owner of CH Gragg Investments and close friend of the university. Half of Gragg’s gift established the C. Hubert Gragg Endowed Scholarship, and the remaining went toward the development and construction of the CHK|Central Boathouse on the Oklahoma River. Since 2011 his endowed scholarship has awarded 24 students $2,500 each. The C. Hubert Gragg Boat Bay is also named in his honor at the new CHK|Central Boathouse on the Oklahoma River.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation From the CHK|Central Boathouse to the Chesapeake Energy Scholars, our partners at Chesapeake Energy Corporation were a valuable player in the growth and trajectory of this university over the last 10 years. Their gifts not only helped create the CHK|Central Boathouse on the Oklahoma River, but also awarded $1,000 scholarships to 160 students in the College of Business and Liberal Arts.

Raphael (Ray) and Ann Beresford UCO received the largest endowed gift in school history from Raphael (Ray) and Ann Beresford in honor of their late son, John Taylor Beresford. The largest portion of the funds was used to establish the John Taylor Beresford Endowed Scholarships in Computer Science. The scholarships are awarded annually to eight undergraduate students and two graduate students studying Computer Science. The other portion of the funds was used to establish two endowed chairs: The John Taylor Beresford Endowed Chair in Computer Science and The John Taylor Beresford Endowed Chair in Mathematics and Statistics.

2011

Don and Shigeko Burget UCO’s Athletic Department received a donation from the widow of former Central athletic standout Don Burget, who died in 2011. The gift was used to establish the Don and Shigeko Burget Athletic Scholarship Fund, which helps support studentathletes at Central. Since its establishment in 2012, 12 student-athletes have benefitted from their generosity.

2012

Chickasaw Nation Under the visionary leadership of Governor Bill Anoatubby, the Chickasaws awarded in 2013 a generous gift to create the Old North outdoor amphitheater. The space is used as an outdoor classroom and a space for gatherings.

2013

MidFirst Bank MidFirst Bank became a valuable university partner in 2013 with their generous donation benefitting the CHK|Central Boathouse, Old North and the creation of an endowed chair for the university.

2014

George and Donna Nigh George and Donna Nigh were instrumental in the creation of the Presidential Partners Program during Governor Nigh’s tenure on campus. This giving society at $1,000 or more has generated much-needed annual support for the university since its creation in 1993. Their legacy of giving continues with the recent establishment of the Donna Nigh Scholarship for Special Education Majors and the Donna Nigh Award for Special Education Faculty.

Chad Richison In 2015, UCO alumnus and former student-athlete Chad Richison, founder and CEO of Oklahoma Citybased Paycom Software Inc., pledged a record amount to UCO Athletics as part of its “Complete the Dream” campaign. Richison’s is the singlelargest gift in university history and among the largest ever received by an NCAA Division II institution. Funds from the gift have been earmarked for athletics facility upgrades that will benefit all of Central’s student-athletes and include an academic center, new weight rooms, locker rooms, athletic training facilities and more.

Life-Saving Research At the University of Central Oklahoma, hands-on research is a top priority. Your scholarship dollars help students spend their time in labs learning alongside awardwinning professors like College of Mathematics and Science Dean Wei Chen, Ph.D., instead of struggling to work and balance the load of a full-time student. Aamr Hasanjee is just one example of a student who used his gift of time to discover a passion for fighting cancer. Hasanjee, a junior biomedical engineering major, was among the 25 undergraduate students invited to share their work with Oklahoma lawmakers during the 21st annual Research Day at the Capitol, an event that informs the legislature and the public about high-quality research being conducted at Oklahoma colleges and universities. A native of the Oklahoma City metro, Hasanjee has been studying under Chen since 2013. Hasanjee was selected by UCO faculty to present his research on laser immunotherapy, a cancer treatment method that uses lasers and immune system-boosting agents to treat aggressive cancer. Hasanjee noted that the method has been used successfully to treat patients whose cancer has reached the level of “almost completely non-treatable.” A summer spent in Central’s Biophotonics Research Laboratory with Chen was all it took to pique Hasanjee’s interest on the approach to cancer treatment. “It wasn’t too long before I got hooked on the idea of treating ‘no-option’ patients and playing a role in saving their lives. Specifically, I have been working with Dr. Chen and several other students, staff and faculty to improve laser immunotherapy by using nanotechnology to boost its anti-cancer effects,” Hasanjee said. “Through the work I and dozens of others have put in, I am confident that laser immunotherapy will be a treatment option available for patients in the clinic in the near future.” Research Day at the Capitol is presented by the Oklahoma Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the National Science Foundation. University of Central Oklahoma junior biomedical engineering student Aamr Hasanjee talks about his research on laser immunotherapy, a method of cancer treatment, during Research Day at the Capitol held at the Oklahoma State Capitol. A Trip of a Lifetime Our UCO students, alumni and donors had the opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip to historic Cuba just months after the country opened its shores to educational groups. From the home of Earnest Hemingway to the manufacturing and local tobacco farms, our students saw a country in the beginning stages of tourism and trade. The experience was made possible for many through scholarship dollars, and it is certainly a trip they won’t soon forget – especially senior Chris Duran, who had the opportunity to meet extended family for the first time.

Penciling in Chris Duran heard about his family in Cuba through his father and he knew he needed to find them. He was able to make a connection with a relative through Facebook. “I have never been more grateful to live in a world where technology and communication have developed so quickly,” said Duran. “It has made connecting with people so much easier.” Duran’s relative, who lives in Mexico, was able to make a connection with her parents in Cuba, Manuel Queipo Betancourt and his wife Iliana Crespo Arias. After a few failed attempts, Duran finally had the moment he had been waiting for on Friday night of the trip. “It was truly a surreal feeling to meet a member of your family on an island that you have never visited in your entire life,” Duran said. “I noticed that I have more family in Cuba than I ever realized.” Duran met his father’s first cousin at the hotel and hopped on the back of a motorcycle, heading off to the family’s home not knowing what to expect. Up until this point, Duran’s time in Cuba had been spent in nicer areas of the island. “We were going into the Cuba that I thought I would see,” Duran said, who described the neighborhood as washed out and falling apart. Betancourt’s house was different than most houses in the neighborhood. The 8

When I first decided to go on a trip to Cuba, I knew very little about the country itself other than what I had learned in various history classes. I knew about the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I knew that the United States had placed an embargo on the country in the 1960’s during the Cold War, and that Cuba was still known to be communist. I also knew that Cuba had famous cigars and rum. But mostly, I knew that I was fascinated by a country that has been “forbidden” to Americans until a little over a year ago, which is why I chose to go on this trip. The first response from most people when I told them that I was preparing to travel to Cuba was either “why would you do that?” or “I’ve heard the cars there are awesome.” I really did not know what to expect other than a city that has supposedly been frozen in time for more than 15 years and under the rule of a communist government. I was excited to learn and attempt to understand this culture, and mostly I was ready to break down prejudices that had been formed about Cuba and its people for many years.

house was small and included a flat screen television and a new rice cooker. “I was surprised to see that it was a modern house,” Duran said. “They said their situation is kind of unique to their neighborhood.” Duran assumed the amenities had been sent from family outside the country. His family also shared what appeared to be a common challenge for others across Cuba – food rationing. “They kept saying there was not enough food,” said Duran. While there, Betancourt shared an old family scrapbook and started pulling out pictures of Duran’s family, even having a picture of his father. He then penciled in Duran and his sister’s name onto the family tree. After dinner, it was hard for Duran as he visited his great aunt and her daughter, who were both in poor health. However, after the visit he returned to Betancourt’s house and spoke about family history, including the house where his father was born during the Cold War. Duran never asked his family if they wanted to move out of Cuba, but he felt through conversation that moving was not something they would do. “Their goal is not to move anywhere, but to live in a better Cuba,” Duran said. – Eriech Tapia Sophomore, Journalism U NIV ER S ITY

Just five years ago, we began asking faculty and staff to invest back into the university. The Always Central Faculty and Staff Campaign kickoff was held on a beautiful day in September 2011 in Plunkett Park on the UCO campus. Since that moment, our faculty and staff have been giving generously to the areas they hold dear. We asked a few why they choose to invest in UCO? 14

UCO Faculty and Staff Campaign “This is a very simple equation for me. I give back because UCO provides me with opportunities to learn, practice, grow and transform. I believe in where UCO is heading.” Habib Tabatabai Senior Director of the Max Chambers Library

“I give back to the university because I truly support our academic programs. I know how hard our students work and how much these scholarships and programs mean to them. I also know I am giving back to something tangible – a person’s education. Giving back supports the study of something I highly value and gives someone else a chance to have the eye opening experiences I had while in college. Gender studies changed my entire worldview and I think it is exciting to support someone else’s journey.” Lindsey Churchill, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, History and Geography U NIV ER S ITY

“President Betz has two quotes he uses when he has the need to call attention to the responsibility of doing good work. The first is from the Ethics of the Fathers, ‘It is not incumbent upon you to complete the work, but neither are you at liberty to desist from it.’ The second, attributed to Adrian Rogers: ‘Leave the woodpile higher than you found it.’” When I retired from UCO a couple of things were apparent to me. One was that I could not finish all the initiatives begun in the 38 years I served and the other that I needed to give back to the place that provided my livelihood, my academic refuge and my inspiration for nearly four decades.” So, when Chris and I created a living trust we remembered what possibilities UCO brought to our lives and to our children’s lives by including planned giving in our trust.” Perhaps the gift will allow others to finish the work. I doubt that we can ever leave the woodpile higher than we found it, but perhaps we can leave enough to make a difference to those who follow.”

A Year to Remember What happens when you arrive at just the perfect moment? That moment when you realize the stars align and you complete the largest comprehensive campaign in UCO’s history with more than $40 million raised, finally see the beginning construction on a building that has laid dormant for nearly 15 years and celebrate 125 years as an institution of higher learning. That moment happened last year and we are incredibly honored you came along for the journey.

The Conclusion of the Always Central Campaign UCO completed the $40 million Always Central campaign in June 2015 with just under $42 million raised. Nearly 8,000 alumni and friends of the university contributed to the campaign with 65 percent of donations coming from first-time donors. Donations supported the five pillars of the campaign: students, teaching, facilities, programs and planned giving. Included in the facilities pillar were efforts to raise the necessary funds to complete the interior renovation of the university’s iconic Old North.

UCO@125 Celebrations UCO celebrated a milestone in its fundraising efforts Nov. 3, 2015 with “Night with the Presidents,” an evening featuring three men who have led the university through a tremendous era of growth. UCO’s Presidential Partners joined former UCO President and Gov. George Nigh, former UCO President W. Roger Webb and current UCO President Don Betz for a lively conversation moderated by KOSU host Gerry Bonds commemorating both the successful completion of the $40 million “Always Central” campaign and the university’s 125th anniversary at the CHK|Central Boathouse on the Oklahoma River.

President Don Betz also honored Always Central campaign co-chairs and UCO alumni Lee and Sherry Beasley and Martha Burger with inductions into the Order of the Clocktower, the university’s highest award, for their successful leadership of the campaign. The award is named for Old North, the university’s oldest building, and honors exceptional individuals who have made lasting contributions to higher education and to Central.

UCO hosted a conversation with Barbara Bush and Jenna Hager, daughters of former President George W. Bush. Hager and Bush discussed some of their favorite White House moments and charities they hold dear.

UCO hosted Bruce Katz, vice president for the Brookings Institution and founding director of its Metropolitan Policy Program. Katz co-authored the 2013 book “The Metropolitan Revolution, which argues that cities and metro areas are the drivers of national economies and the front lines for economic policy innovation. His visit to UCO created a new partnership between his program and the Oklahoma City Metro area.

The Distinguished Speaker Series continued with threetime Pulitzer Prize-winning author and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. U NIV ER S ITY
