FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS UC is famous for its student club culture. We currently have over 130 clubs, with many thousands of members! Those sort of number don’t lie. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, get academic support, find likeminded folk, play a sport, as well as get involved with all sorts of activities on and off campus. Basically, if you want to make the most of your UC experience, we highly recommend joining a club. Or several!

What does being in a club involve?

Your club experience generally depends on the kind of club(s) you join, and how much you personally want to be involved. Some clubs meet every week – but other clubs may only meet a few times a year. Some people may wish to be heavily involved with running their club - others may just enjoying attending the odd club event. Have a chat to the club before you sign up. After that, it’s really up to you!

The best way to get an idea of all the different types of clubs at UC, and the people involved, is to head along to one of the UCSA’s Clubs Days. These are held on campus at the beginning of each semester. The first Clubs Days will be held on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th February in the UCSA car park. Head on down! Failing that, you can always search the full database of clubs (and their contact details) on our website: ucsa.org.nz And, of course, there’s this handy little Clubs Guide you’re reading.

Can clubs get money from the UCSA?

Why would I want to join a club?

How can I get in touch with a club I’m interested in?

Once a club has been affiliated for 12 months it is eligible to apply to the USCA Club Grants scheme. Grants are processed throughout the year – but there are rules for what can be funded, and deadlines for submitting - so get in touch with the UCSA for further details.

If you’re interested in starting your own club, the first thing to do is have a chat with the UCSA. You can find us in the Ground Floor of Puaka-James Hight. You can visit us online at usca.org.nz, or call us on (03) 364 2652

Can I start my own club? 3

Elegance Trip: A classy event that attracts lecturers and students alike. We also have a number of exciting new events which will be sure to get our members excited. FROM A MEMBER:

“Coming to my first clubs day a naïve fresher I was trapped by the common misconception that Rocksoc was just for geology students. However, after some mates talked me into joining this year I now realize that it is not just a club for rock people. In fact, Rocksoc is by far the best club I have been a member of during my uni career. The events are cheap, ridiculously fun and don’t have such limited entry that they end up alienating the majority of their members like some of the other clubs.” 12

FROM A MEMBER:

Looking for an internship/job? The careers expo will give you a number of opportunities to get your foot in the door.

“You may have heard rumours that speech therapy is a full-on degree. But do not fret, for there is Speechsoc – a social club (or support group even) that understand the demands of the programme. Speechsoc’s therapy strategies include quiz nights, party buses and their legendary wine and cheese night, all of which provide opportunity to let your hair down from the hectic life of a budding young clinician and have a few drinks before deciding that it is the perfect time to practice tests of cerebellar function on each other. Heck, they even organise study groups to help you get started on that assignment that may seem insurmountable at first. Yep, Speechsoc is to speechies what Friday is to Rebecca Black.” CONTACT:

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT:

First years need LAWSOC in their lives! The premier social events on campus; academic/welfare support; camps, comps; sport and chat. Like Suits but more glamorous, almost. While LAWSOC exists to advocate for Law Students, our social events are famous campus-wide. We’re definitely NOT a club just for law students.

KEY EVENTS:

Buddy Night (3rd March): A night of meeting, greeting, drinking and grooving. A $4,000 bar tab and sultry sweet tunes welcome our first years to Law School. A night not to be missed. Open to all, not just law students. Law Camp (27th-29th March): The (in)famous Law Camp is a law school institution; a rite of passage for all law students. A great way to meet people; a Law Camp friend is a friend for life. Plus there’s kegs, so many kegs. Law Stein (30th May): A chance to blow off some steam after a raft of term 2 essays and tests. Cheap drinks and dope beats to keep you entertained. This event’s the new kid on the block and we will be making it BIG. Law Ball (25th July): A premier event on LAWSOC’s social calendar. Routinely recognised as one of, if not the, best events on campus. A gourmet three course meal, premium drinks, live entertainment and more. Dust off your suit or ball gown, LAWSOC’s going to show you a good time.

FROM A MEMBER:

“I’ve loved being part of LAWSOC this year! I met so many friends at Buddy Night in first year. Law Ball was the real highlight, the glitz and glamour of it all was so amazing. The tutorials are a real help if you’re screwed for a test. I love LAWSOC!”

Law Revue (12th-14th August): This singing, dancing, terribly offensive stage show extravaganza is put on by a cast of (extremely) amateur law students. Whether you’re a cast or audience member this’ll have you in stitches. Academic/Wellness (all year): Academic tutorials for mid and end of year exams, coffee and muffin catch-ups, wellness-week and advocacy support. LAWSOC’s providing you with the support to get through the grind of Law School. We’ve got your back.

The CUTC is one of the largest sports clubs at UC. It was formed for the pursuit of tramping and climbing. Weekly club nights and multiple trips going away to the mountains each weekend. Social events throughout the year. Meet like-minded students and explore the great outdoors of New Zealand. KEY EVENTS:

Bushcraft: The Bushcraft course is the perfect introduction to tramping skills, for those new(ish) to tramping and camping. On this course you will learn which way north is, which way to hold a map, which way to pitch your tent, and even which way to pee if it’s windy! TWALK: A twenty-four hour orienteering event. It is split in to five legs, each around 15-20 kilometres long. Each leg has around 10 - 20 controls, which will be hidden on features marked on the map and described by a cryptic clue. Bush Ball: A ball in the bush! This is an epic traditional event that is not to be missed! There will be music, drinks and general craziness! So dust off those ball gowns and iron those shirts! Snowcraft: These courses are by far one of biggest events on the CUTC instruction calendar. A basic knowledge of snow skills allows you to get into that silly sport called mountaineering and significantly improves your tramping opportunities.
